  • 🌱We know that adding heat to sunflower microgreens accelerates germination, but we didn't know if it also works with trays that are commercially stacked...
    ➡️In this video we test this by having two different groups, one that was on a seedling heat mat and the other was not on a heat mat. Both groups were stacked 4-trays high, to see if the heat could rise through the stacked trays evenly!

    Adding 1/4" pink rigid insulation underneath the heat mats will provide greater energy efficiency. Also, I think the temperature controller is important as these mats seem to get too warm without one and can damage the seed. Another great vid, thanks!

  • @petercorrigan1518
    @petercorrigan1518 4 роки тому +1

    Our sunflower grow so much healthier without heat.
    Not only does the heat instigate mold, but stacking trays created too much contact with the heat pad and bottom tray causing the seed to not germinate. Only until we removed the heat days later did the seeds start to finally show life. This might be due to the fact that we didn’t use the temp controller so our pads were max heat all the time.
    The heat also created an enormous amount of moisture in the trays which turned the coco coir into sludge. When lifting stacked trays, the coco coir completely ripped apart and seeds and crops got egregiously dirty!
    We’ve completely moved away from the heat pads as they have given us such large inconsistencies across all our crops.

    14:19 "This is probably the most important tray"??? No. The bottom tray is the LEAST important. You already ran the experiment previously on the bottom tray heat mat vs no heat mat. This experiment was about whether the heat mat made a difference on trays above the bottom one.
    The experiment result that was most interesting was trays 3 and 4 which show a substantial increase in germination up through tray 3 but not in the top tray (4).
    I have a hypothesis on why #3 was the last tray to show an increase: It was the highest tray that still had an insulating layer of a full additional tray above it. Reasoning? The top tray still had water vapor on its lid so you know the heat was still rising substantially at that point. But the lower increase in germination might have been because that lid on #4 had the fan blowing across it rather than keeping the heat in through an additional layer of fan-insulating trays above it.
    Proposed test:
    I would guess that another layer of insulation by having a 5th tray would have meant that tray 4 would have also had better germination on it than the non-heat-mat tray 4. If you had the room on your shelves to re-run this experiment, I would find it interesting to run it through maybe 8 trays. If you then had a substantial difference through 7 trays, then you might even look to try higher than that.
    If you did an 8-tray stack and the improvement in germination was not noticeable by tray 6, that would give you a huge bit of information as to how many trays of improved germination you could get off of a single heat mat. The next question would be what you could put over the top tray's cover to provide insulation from heat loss caused by the fan.
    Anyways, nice test there and very interesting results.

    Fascinating. The whole "heat rises" thing is only true within fluids like air. Heat transfers at a constant rate in all directions within solids. I bet you're still getting a lot of heat transfer upwards because of the fact that the grow mediums are pretty permeable, and there's a lot of water vapor at play. You might get a lot more consistent performance in the stacks of 4 if you placed the heat source between the 1st and 2nd mat in the stack. I would almost say to put it in the dead center of the stack, but the heat is clearly rising, so there is fluid heat transfer at play. Just a theory.
    I've watched like 30 of yall's videos because of all this isolation business. Super interesting stuff. My girlfriend has been talking about hydroponics for a while, and I finally decided to get a microgreen starter kit from True Leaf Market to pass the time in quarantine. Unfortunately, their shipping time is extended because of extremely high order volume (good!). Can't wait to harvest that sweet, sweet spicy salad mix and expand from there.

    Nice video. The heat mat detector should be plugged into coco, so it will get the medium heated to the temperature you want. Otherwise it's simply showing the temperature of the air. The temperatures on the thermostat shows between current soil temperature (you need to put that little thing into the soil) and target temperature. It's not showing the temperature of the heat mat. The heat mat produce more or less heat depending on how much difference there is to reach the target temperature.

    When running heat mats I tape the probe to the under side of the mat & then adjust the mat temp to get the desired temp above the mat as registered on a second temp probe. Once I get it calibrated I ditch the second probe.
    The reason I do this is it keeps the probe out of the way making cleaning easier and no wires in my way.

    Great video. I’ve enjoyed your channel and how both of you are able to present information clearly and succinctly. You both are great on camera.
    One metric that I would have been interested in, was the height of each tray above the other. On the last day, each level on the heated vs the cold/control group were up by a significant amount. The heated trays looked like the base was higher than the lip of the tray below them. That would probably give some quantifiable measurement to how different each tray’s growth is when compared to each level within its group, and it’s counterpart within the different temperature group.

    Next test I would like to see is carrots. Especially because of how SLOW they germinate. If heat mats (stacked trays) could make a big difference on germination rates for carrots, this would give a lot more information on just what percent the increase rate is. And might make a difference of several days rather than just one day on fast-germinating sunflowers.

    In darkness of the germination process seeds work like animals in terms of cellular respiration, so they are converting Glucose and Oxygen into ATP and they are "breathing out" water and carbon dioxide. So perhaps the higher presence of water on the "lid" is evidence of faster growth.

    What are the benefits of both?

    • @OnTheGrow

      Great question! We love the mesh because we feel they are more versitile. They are best for hydroponic mats, but they also work well with soil if you keep the soil moist. If the soil is dry, it will fall through the mesh and get really messy. The slotted work well overall, but restrict the roots a little when using hydroponic mats. They are really great for soil. We use about 125grams per tray and mold is pretty normal. Most growers sanitize thier seeds when soaking. They will use a little bit of bleach or white vinegar. Personally, we just try to keep the seeds moist but not too wet and keep them from getting too hot. If we get mold, we will spray it with food-grade hydrogen-peroxide to stop it. Rinse your seeds before planting too... Hope that helps!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому +1

      Correct! What we’ve learned is that every single batch of sunflowers is completely different. The batch we pH balanced needed it to germinate well, but now we have sunflowers that actually don’t need a soak or anything at all. They germinate stronger without any kind of soaking. So now when we get sunflowers, we test them with several techniques such as soaking for different times and no soaking to see what germinates best. Then we use that going forward with that batch! Hope that helps! 🤗🌱🌱
