To me brothership is like dream team. Slow to start but a great Mario jrpg adventure. I think its important to note that I don’t think we can compare the first 3 games to dream team and now brothership. The first 3 mario games are much shorter jrpgs that can be much easily replayed where a DT and Brothership are going for a more grand jrpg experience. Eitherway brothership is absolutely worthy as a successor and revival of the mario and luigi franchise.
@ Definitely. But tbh I enjoy the gameplay enough (to play through 6 other games) so it’s not too bad but definitely something that needs to be rectified in later games.
The games should both definitely have better pacing. I mean, I can replay TTYD, OG Paper Mario, along with the first 3 MaL games any day because of their pacing. They all were also so engaging too with great stories.
@ Linear as it is, It doesn’t feel linear atleast to me. Same with Superstar Saga. Unlike Partners in time and to a lesser extent BIS. Thought I think what makes the he difference is BIS and PIT (love them both) feel much more barren then SS or brothership
What would you identify as strengths? It looks nice but the gameplay is super repetitive and the story/characters are weak compared to superstar saga and bis
@@plooper14 the story and characters are ABSOLUTELY much better than the mentioned games, both of these have like 2 good original characters each, Brothership has much more
I agree, and I feel the exact same way about Dream Team (the latter of which is my favourite game in the franchise as a whole). I beat BrSh (Brothership) today, and I really like it. Sure, it has some issues, like the pacing, but it's quite fun overall. A bit too long for my liking (at least in a 100% run), but I still enjoyed it. I definitely want to replay it some time in the near future. I can understand why people might not like it, but I feel like it's best to go into the game with no expectations and to try not to compare it to other games.
@@plooper14 I second this. On its own I love the combat but from my 46-hour playthrough it was way more repetitive compared to the past games. The bosses were very evidently the best designed of the series, but there are HALF the number of bosses in Brothership than there are in BIS, in a game that is DOUBLE the length of BIS. Overall, I enjoyed this game a lot, but sadly I don't think even its best aspects could've made the game's abysmal and repetitive pacing better for me. Also, something that hurt the game way more than I expected was the music, not having bangers from Shimomura playing all the time was really messing with me during my playthrough.
The reason menuing for Luigi was switched to the A button was because you can now adjust battle plugs during battles, which is a whole different styled menu and would be more confusing to confirm with B when you have Luigi. At first, I didn't like it because it seemed like a change made for no reason, but because of this, I am more accepting of it. However, I know this sounds stupid, but if the game was developed for a 3DS-like console with two screens, this could have been a touch screen system. I think Paper Jam might have had something like that. That's what I am reminded of at least.
I love Brothership, and I agree with almost everything you had to say. But I don’t completely agree with your points about Luigi. The point was never that you could play AS Luigi. It was that you were controlling both brothers at the same time. People like to say that the platforming was “annoying” in the older games, but I always felt that trying to clear jumps with both brothers was what made it unique. The Mario franchise already has 2 other examples of turn-based RPGS, both with similar styles of platforming. Controlling both bros. at the same time set it apart, and highlighted that the focus of this series was these two working together to overcome obstacles. So it was disappointing (and quite ironic) that the game all about connecting and working together was the one that really pared that back, and made it feel like you’re only controlling one character, with a little helper who ran off and did stuff on his own.
honestly, I wanted to like this game more. I’m happy so many people are enjoying it, and I did overall have a good time playing it. It’s stronger than the 3ds games, and it excels in areas like the bosses and end game. But my main issue was that Brothership was WAY TOO LONG! With how little bros attacks, enemy variety, and boss fights there are. It starts to where out its welcome by hour 30, and then it goes on for another 20 hours.
Nah man, you‘ve no perseverance for virtual adventures. It should’ve been WAY LONGER, by giving it the additional two islands for each of the last two oceans, like EVERY OTHER ocean in _Concordia_ has! It’s one of my MAIN critic points, that it already gives ya an „it’s-about-to-end-soon-now“-vibe already just after you finished the SECOND island of Gulshrock Sea (Wayaway), while ALL PREVIOUS oceans had constantly FOUR solid island adventures to go. No one forced you to rush through a great adventure within a week, the best game would be that, which accompanies ya for MONTHS! 🎮
@@SkywalkerSam64I feel like they cut content where there should be and added content where there shouldn’t be. I agree the fourth sea was just so confusing, there was only two islands (the backtracking that takes like 15 mins doesn’t count) and the lighthouse was basically fake?? I get that putting two dungeons back-to-back is probably exhausting but what if we put an island or two for a breather? That’s what the second sea did, between Lottacoins which was basically a dungeon with how long it was and the boss at the end, and the lighthouse they had Allsand to fill the gap… And then to fill the shortage of content in the fourth sea you visit the final area and get kicked out not once, but TWICE… and there’s a bunch of filler between those visits, especially between the second and third time, the Bonds fetch quest was easily my least favorite part of the game, it felt so forced and I wish we got to explore some new islands in that time instead or something… Anyway I loved the game besides that just the final act had really bad pacing issues
I think if the game was too short, then I feel like people would've complained about it not being worth $60. It's unfortunate, but we do live in a world where a game needs to be lengthy enough to justify a full price tag. Brothership is definitely a long game, but I personally think the aspects and scale of its story carried it so well, that it didn't bother me. The story really starts to pick up after the third Great Lighthouse Island, and I feel it only got better from there. Dream Team, on the other hand, definitely feels it overstays its welcome in certain parts. Especially the Dream World sections in the later half of the game. Love the game, but man I think they should've trimmed the fat a little. It seemed it was really trying to be like Bowser's Inside Story, except they forgot why certain sections in that game were balanced and worked so well. Plus...when you really think about it...every game in the Mario & Luigi series has bad pacing. Even Superstar Saga with hunting the Beanstar pieces. It didn't help that the Beanstar itself didn't even do anything in the story either.

I still think the remakes were treated too harshly. Especially BIS. The fact that the most recent entry in the series had been the painfully sanitized Paper Jam, and Mario RPGs outside Dream Team were generally always sanitized in the 2010s, made the fact that the two best games in the series were getting remade insanely hype, even if they got a small degree of sanitization in the less important NPCs. I still don't get why everyone else was like "ehhh who cares if good Mario RPGs are back, it's on 3DS therefore glass half empty, pass" They are flawed but i was so happy to see my two favorite entries in the modern visual style at the time. Suddenly Dream Team wasn't the only modern Mario RPG i cared about. So as far as I'm concerned the only 3DS M&L that deserved to be unpopular was Paper Jam. The M&L remakes could have been the renaissance of Mario RPGs but instead we stuck our noses up at them and made it so that renaissance had to wait until 2023.
Good game, took too long to get good, sidequests are not worth the reward, being unable to recharge plugs without emptying them completely sucks and discourages use when you have to save them for later. No real purpose to 100% the game. no post game means the game just ends when it ends. why were all the lighthouse bosses just pill shaped blobs with eyes inside their mouth? (not a serious criticism but aint it weird?) battles hard carry this game, but again it takes until your first plug before it even gets interesting. I think the story ends up being very good (if tropey lol) once you are making headway through the game, but one criticism I see that I absolutely agree with is that the actual stakes take far too long to feel tangible. It absolutely sucks to not see a single glimpse of any real antagonist until way into the first sea, which coupled with the slow gameplay pacing makes things feel incredibly aimless early on.

I did feel like I lost track of the story but keep in mind I personally did a full 100% meaning all side quests, all challenges, visiting every island, and yeah there are some days I took off cause I had stuff going on in my life but while I do like the world building I do feel like there are a tiny bit too many side quests. comparing this game to the Paper Mario series is completely not fair Mario and Luigi series is a completely different series from Paper Mario. My review for this games is as follows. The game is good but not great. It's very repetitive, especially with the jump and / or hammer attacks. You either do A/B/A or B/A/B. After doing that about 2000 literally. It's gets too repetitive. Same with the Bros attacks. Even though the animations at first were super cool. After seeing it hundreds of times, it just gets boring. I wish they had included the advance move set that after achieving 100 times the excellent rating, luigi thinks, and you get the advance move set. Something like that would keep it interesting. I also hated Connie. Her world literally collapsed, and she always runs ahead when about to fight the boss of the lighthouses. Also, the games always forces you play it in a linear way. I would say too linear. To the point were Snoutlet doesn't even let you find reefs unless you do what Snoutlet says first. The story was good and got better towards the end but progression is really slow paced. Battle plugs were good also but needed more variety. The art style is good, reminds me a lot of the original superstar saga. Mario right now is level 55 and im about to fight the final boss. Luigi is the same at 55 and I can get 1 bro move to give 3000 attack. Overall this is a good game but not a great one. This one won't be remembered like superstar saga or Bowers inside story. I give it a 7.5/10. Hope there is DLC down the line that at least give us the advanced move set to keep things interesting.
My brother in Christ, the advanced bros. attacks were only in Superstar Saga and no games afterwards, and the linearity? my guy, it's an RPG, of COURSE it's gonna be linear, and in my opinion, Brothership is arguably the LEAST linear game in the series, and if you stand by those statements then that's fine, i'm just pointing out some minor flaws I'm seeing in this comment, no hate intended (and you probably know this already, but FYI, you are WAY too overlevelled)
@IamRETEP_IamEVIL96 what is they were only in superstar saga. Does that mean it can never come back just cause you say it? I played this game to 100% and plan on grinding until they're level 100. It's not that hard. And if you dont think it's linear, then my guy, you and I didn't play the same game. Have you even finished it?
@@ccolin113 again, no hate intended, i'm just kindly disagreeing with your point of view, if you think the game is too linear, by all means, go ahead, I genuinely don't care, i'm just saying that in my personal opinion I don't agree with your views, the advanced bros. attacks in Superstar Saga made sense because the bros were thinking of new strategies and ways to approach the same attack, while in Brothership, the attacks are all item based, there's no feasible way to "advance" those bros. attacks, and with Max-Mix Vortex and Conductor Connecter already being the most powerful bros. attacks in the game, advancing those moves would just feel redundant, and I didn't say the game WASN'T linear, it is VERY linear, i'm just saying it's the least linear of all the games by COMPARISON, i'm not trying to disprove your opinions by any means (and FYI, yes, I did beat the game, I beat it twice and am currently halfway through my third playthrough, if you don't believe me that's fine, I really don't care)
I have returned! I promise next video won't take another year to come out.

Short anwser: No. Long anwser: absolutely 100% certain zero doubt NO.
No for what that the game is good or bad.
