A couple years back I had the pleasure of meeting two soon-to-be retired United pilots. They flew the 747 from Chicago to SF, and then SF onto Hong Kong. Hands down they had the greatest pleasure flying the 747. They talked about the 747 as if it wasn't just a job, but a thrill to fly. You could see the enjoyment they got out of flying it. They weren't too impressed by the newer planes though. Even with all the new technology, they said the 747 handled better, and they could really feel flying the aircraft. I asked them about flying into Kai Tak (HK's old airport), and you could see by their expression how challenging it was to land there. They said it was both scary and a thrill. One of the best conversations I have ever had. I am going to miss the old bird. Beautiful to look at, and a pleasure to fly in. I hope airlines order the 747-8I, and keep the 747 in the skies.
Wonderful to hear of your conversation with these pilots. While I doubt we will see an airplane of this likeness again, any airplane that helps us travel, see the world better and bring us closer to the people involved is special to me. I am saddened by the retirement of the 747 but I cherish the memories and the relationships that I have formed because of it.
it was a fascinating conversation. If you ever find yourself near a pilot, grab their arm, and let them regale you of their adventures. Of course an interest in planes, airports and flying helps. I am not the flyer you are, in fact I hate flying, but I love planes, and airports. There is a certain energy that is unique to an airport, and O'Hare is one of the best. I find airports to be a microcosm of their respective city. I asked the pilots specifically of the 777. Like I mentioned, they said it was good, but no 747. Perhaps they thought there was too much technology. But hopefully the 747-8 can have a place in the skies. Lufthansa is probably the test case, as they have both the -8 and the A380. Interesting itsn't it how one would not think a plane led to the memories and relationships you have formed. A plane has led to that. Now I think of the same thing. You could, and I am being serious here, you could let Boeing know about that, because I have never thought about it until you mentioned it. I think it would make a fantastic tribute to the plane. The places, people and memories seen and created, because of the 747.
@@justathought5984 Thank you for your words, as a young man I will not likely have many opportunities to fly on the 747, so I appreciate stories like yours. Long live the Queen of the Skies!
@@tylerjordan1479 I don't know what city you are in, but if you're in a major, major city, you can catch glimpses of the bird with international airlines (assuming you are in the US). Pictures just don't do it justice. There is nothing like seeing 2 big lights in the sky, and then seeing 4 engines approach. And if you are able to be under the flight path there is nothing like hearing a 747 take off or approach for landing, except for the Concord/e, another great bird that has flown the coop.

Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD Most definitely. I really miss flying with the Queen. Been 10 long years, last flown on KLM to O'Hare (Coincidence, :P) Oh, Do you mind checking out couple of my vids when you have time? +Groyd COOOOOOOO737OOOOL! I have flown on both a SWA 737 and a Delta 737-900 each a few times but I'll sometime have to check out the United product and see how it is.
Groyd it wasn't all that bad actually... I too had low expectations but ... then again... I don't make a good travel writer or reviewer because I am flexible, very un-picky, and not very demanding when it comes to travel like this. I rarely complain about anything unless it is really uncomfortable or the like. There was adequate legroom for me to stretch my legs out and put a size-able backpack under my seat. There was free drinks (soda, juice, water) and even though I didn't sample the food available for purchase, the selections didn't look to bad. A tad pricey but if you were hungry you'd enjoy it I think.
Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD oh, ok. Cool that you aren't very picky when it comes to flying, that's a good quality to have I guess! Ive heard really BAD things about UA 739 and that it is a flying trashcan. The -800 is nicer but I wont fly that and the -700, dunno, guess ill find out. I hope they serve peanuts and sprite...
20K for Jay!!!!!!!!!!! Seems like just yesterday that I was saying 10K for Jay......actually I don't know when that was, but I did say it to you. ;) Seriously though, big congrats to you, Jay. One doesn't get 20,000 subs on an aviation channel by accident.......and you deserve every one of them for the work that you do. Keep up the great work whenever you can, man. :) P.S. San Fran to Chitown on a 747......I'll take THAT. Great vid.
+turbofanlover YOU da MAN, Mr. Turbofan! Yes, I remember it .... seems like it was quite recently I remember ;) Thanks for enjoying being along for the journey with me! Great fun uploading these memories of mine and letting others enjoy them as well.
Its amazing the Research and Development that went into airplane wings that make them work. They're had to have been a lot of studying how birds and insects fly. Modern fighter planes seem to be designed around the common house fly when you see they're shape.
+Flightline COOL!!! I hope you enjoy my hometown and former city of residence. Check in with me then if you'd like some advice on good spotting areas in Chicago.
+Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD I heard about your new position in MSP. That sounds so awesome and you're super lucky to be able to fly more with an awesome job to boot! I'm almost tempted to take a mini day trip within my trip to MSP as well now haha. I'm long overdue for a crazy spotting adventure.
can't remember if they used it or not.... the sound quality is not great. Sorry about that. This is a plenty long runway so the pilots may have decided it wasn't needed.
Wow, that is unusual Jay! United using a 747-400 jumbo jet for a relatively short San Francisco to Chicago O'Hare trip. You could easily do that in a Boeing 737, or Airbus 319/320 jet. Perhaps they were re-positioning the 747 for a longer flight later on that day? This happened to me once when I took a trip from Dallas DFW to Chicago O'Hare back in the early 1990's aboard an American Airlines 767 jumbo jet. I don't believe they were required that day to top off the fuel tanks! In 1994 I flew another American Airlines 767 jumbo jet non-stop from Chicago O'Hare to Frankfurt, Main Intl in Germany. I laughed at your food selection aboard your trip. Flying on coach on any domestic airline nowadays guarantees you nothing as far as elegant cuisine food service, lol! You have to fork over thousands of dollars to fly in first class to receive a "real meal"! Great vid as usual, Jay!
+jeffman61 haha! thanks for watching, jeffman61! There are a few regular scheduled heavies for Delta, United and American daily due to volume and mostly they are going between hubs. They do have sandwich selections for purchase but sadly no free meal in the back like in the old days.... I did like the Stroopwafel snacks though.
I almost forgot that United had 747's!! Awesome in flight footage buddy :) really nice shots of SFO! Were the skies as friendly as they advertise? Hahaha
+Canadian Plane Spotter Yep! Delta still has them as well. I'll try to fly one of those internationally soon here but it was easier to get the United domestic for now.
Why didn't you fly on Delta to Chicago? Didn't they have anything on the day you flew? And I thought you worked with Delta is flying on a competitor kinda risky to do?
+briansivley2001 There is no direct flights to O-Hare from SFO on Delta. That would mean he would have to make a layover somewhere in Salt Lake City, which would be cool, or LAX.
+briansivley2001 it can be risky, yes. You may not be able to get on in certain circumstances but I actually can fly on other airlines as well given my employment status :) the reason I chose this one? I wanted to fly a United Airlines Boeing 747. Simple as that ;)
+Bryguy10201 I used to watch videos from folks here on UA-cam who would fly all the time and always wished I could as well.... Getting to fly as often as I do is a privilege for sure... I've worked long and hard to get where I am now and I have no doubt you too will someday be able to fly often and work for an airline if you dedicate yourself and are willing to give it the effort it takes. Wishing you nothing but the best, my friend.
Lee Zinke there’s no reason that airlines would opt for a 747 anymore. It’s the end of an era, and now a days airlines, especially the U.S. ones, would have a hard time trying to fill up the 400+ seats available on the aircraft. They would need their airplanes basically full every flight just to be profitable, whereas using a smaller capacity, more efficient aircraft such as the Airbus A350 or Boeing 787 don’t need to be full to be profitable, and can fly the lower demand longer routes that wouldn’t need the size of the 747. Plus, they are much cheaper in terms of operating costs, maintenance, and normal day-to-day expenses.
Hey Jay have you ever flown business class on southwest? It would be my first time and possibly not my last because when cheap flights sell out people will do anything to get on the flight they want even if it means paying extra. So altogether I had cost me like $456 to fly to Cleveland Thursday to Monday. Anyways I imagine the expressway line by security is way to the left or way to the right. The regular lines are in the middle. I am excited to be one of the first to board I will be 15th or less to board since is the first 15. I think I will be one of the first. I am usually towards the back of the A list like 32nd or so. Last year flying back I was probably 32nd but when the people were not standing under the correct post some of the guy passengers were telling me the beginning of the line is under the one block and they were putting me at the beginning of the line. I wanted to find my correct spot but the first passengers to board were letting me go in front of them. Although when I got on the plane there was about 8 people on there already In fact I filmed boarding the plane. But I never knew that sometimes people don't stand in front of the correct post they just form a line under the post that's the closest. And they had let me cut in line. Some nice fellows they were probably the last of the business class folks.
yeah I knew that business class is not the same as first class:) I might go to the back again. Might sit up by the front by the engine, I realized I don't have to film the engine the whole time. Would be cool to see the smoke come out of it when backing up. Well see. It would be a new experience by the engine. On the way home I will most likely grab the back. I went a good view of the Chicago skyline. I want to film it the best I can.
THey will be good videos because when i watch my videos i learn what to do and not do. I know the flight path so coming home will be even better. I went past two islands and i don't know why i didn't film them i only took a picture of them so i will film them next time. And some of it i will cut out next time i kept thinking we would land soon when we really had like 20 minutes left or so. And when i see the skyline i wont keep zooming in on it. When i video taped the take off that was excellent and it was only my first time to do that flight path from Chicago to Cleveland. So that one will be almost identical. Although i didn't tape the ground accept for clouds since it was a cloudy day at 35,000 feet. Maybe this time will be a clear day so that i can see some ground. I am excited to get in the short security line. I will spot the spanking long line like last year and i will have to find my way to the short line. I am sure i will find it fast even if i have to ask one of the workers. Check in baggage is on the main floor and security over there is on the lower level after you get off the escalator. And its on the right. I am learning it all by heart now that i have flown 3 times.
Very nice video and especially fun to see you land in Chicago. The weather has been nice over here but hazy so that everything further out is foggy. I can see the skyline from the 5th floor of the hospital and most of the time you can see the skyline very clearly but sometimes its hazy or foggy. Lately its been hazy and i know by looking at the skyline from work. But very nice weather here though. Anyways i buy my southwest tickets tonight flying from Chicago to Cleveland over memorial day. Its going to cost about $350 including early bird and tax and that's expensive for the 1 hour flights but i don't have a wide selection since i am going just the 4 days. I'll have to keep peeking over the next month to see if the flight sells out since i am going at a busy time. IF it sells out i will be sitting next to someone. Last year the middle seat of my flights was empty. And the people who sat in the isle were nice. So far i am always by nice people who don't mind me video taping. They never say anything about it. Coming home from San Diego last year a girl around 11 years old sat next to me and her mother was in the isle seat. I could tell they were coming back from vacation too with the rest of there family in near by seats.
I am not fully looking forwards to the balloon ride but family members have raved about how neat it is up there. Last year i surprisingly wasn't not a spec afraid and when they cancelled it i was so disappointed. This year i wont be that afraid either. I'll probably get a little scared on the way up hoping we don't get too high.
yeah that looks hard to film from that seat. I am always running to the back of the plane the easiest angle to film. I think about sitting in front of the engine but i am afraid that i would be half bent just to get it in the video and i wouldn't want the guy next to me to think i am crazy. Well see maybe its not hard to get a different view.
Many airlines have at least one flight between some of their hubs that is a heavy... it's mostly just for capacity... lots of people trying to make connections all at once. I've flown AA787-8, AA777-300ER, AA777-200ER, AA A330-300, UA 747-400, 767-300, 777-200, 787-8, Delta 747-400, A330, 777-200LR, 767-300 and 767-300W all between hubs before.
+Sheri-myvideos I have to agree ;) One of the challenges of flying on the wing of a jet this large is the window is small enough and the wing is big enough that sometimes getting enough views of the landscape of the earth below can be difficult. Thankfully, I think it turned out OK.
Hi Jay...I have a update...I changed my flight the other day from leaving Friday to leaving Thursday, the boss had gave me an extra day off without even knowing that I had wished I left Thursday to go to the Balloon glow that evening. So I changed it to Thursday that I would be leaving. The interesting thing is that the Wanna get away fare was sold out and at first I was going to do the super early morning leave at 5:50am flight and get $41 credit but she said the Business class fare was open and that I could add the $41 to it and add on $70 bucks. So in the end I paid a lot $356 plus an added $70. Heck it was worth it because I didn't want that morning flight!!! I am not a morning person. I am excited I get to be the first 15 to board and I get to go through the express lane when I go to the security line. Last year the regular line was real long and I had to find my way to the end of the line which was going all the way out into another hallways. So I will hold my head high flying business class. lol On the way home I am the regular wanna get away fare plus early bird. OH and then the next day the regular wanna get way fare opened back up as if someone cancelled. I fly out Thursday from Midway at 12:45 and get there at 1:50 since they are an hour ahead. I come back home on memorial day. I will have to delete some of those old text in a while.
I am excited about not having to wait in a long long long security line. I will just look for the fast line. Last year I traveled on a Thursday at the same time same day and the security line went all the way out of the security area and into the hallway and up into another hallway and and actually through a doorway. The line moved pretty fast for being that long probably 15 minutes. But this time I get to go to the fast lane with my head held high. And I will eat breakfast I liked the breakfast sandwhich I ate last year.
KLM will resume flights to Miami from Sunday October 30 2016. The Airline will fly thrice weekly A330 services there. Expect KLM to start 787 flights to Miami soon. They'll fly their 787-9s to Colombo. airlineroute.net/2016/05/01/kl-miacmb-w16/
Boo... I got to fly on a United DC-10 from SFO to Ohare in the mid 90's. It was great, best flight I've ever been on, the plane sailed through the sky like glass.
+kdubb 81 this video was actually filmed quite recently.. April 19th, 2016 actually. Time to get back in touch with the industry, my friend! No, we don't have meals in the sky these days in economy but there are still very nice heavy aircraft like this one on many domestic routes. You just have to know what to look for :)
I didn't know that. I only see 737's and 757's flying those kind of routes. Whenever I fly across the country, I will look for a 747. I do know alot of airlines stopped flying them because they burn too much fuel. I have only seen them fly 1/2 way around the world.
+Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD The 747 seems like a bit of an anachronism now, with so many other choices, like the 777. It is pretty amazing, if you think about it, that United and Delta still have theirs, and sad that they probably won't replace them.
mrtodd3620 as much as I love the 747 because I am an airplane fan... I have to see the business side of it and I do note how much money is spent each year burning more fuel than is now currently needed for these sorts of trips.... when you think about it, it's amazing the 747 has lasted this long as it is. Gotta fly them while we can. We will always remember them.
+Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD I flew an Air China 747-SP in the 90s LAX to Beijing via Shanghai and maybe SFO. I went with a group and our seats were assigned randomly, and I sat in business class. On the way back, a lot of people would stretch out on the floor in the space in front of the exits. I don't think that would be permitted now. We landed at LAX and ground service was provided by Pan Am.
Just purchased a Southwest ticket from Chicago to Cleveland for $356.96 which includes the early bird. That's exactly half my paycheck though. Bittersweet.

+Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD Nice! What did you think of those aircraft? I don't have very high expectations for UA Economy! :)
+Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD Nice! What did you think of those aircraft? I don't have very high expectations for UA Economy! :)
Great video liked and subscribed! :)
+phelsuma Thanks for stopping by!
You're lucky!
Well, Milwaukee is getting UA (not Express, actual United), with routes to Chicago and Denver. Maybe there'll be SFO service with 747s.
THNX for watching!
Very excellent work my friend. I hope to see more!
I cannot imagine in this day of narrow body, jam and cram em, to take the mighty 47 on a domestic. RIGHT FREAKIN ON!!!!!
Was a special experience for sure and one I will always remember. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video mate! Huge like :)
+ViennaSpotting THNX 4 watching!
Wonderful!
Margaret Roselle Thanks for watching!
Just found this video again. Not exactly sure why the winglets aren't painted, maybe some repairs were made to them?
it's possible.
What do you do exactly?
+Corey Riola I'm an aircraft dispatcher.
+Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD neat. I work at the airport too
Nice one! I'm going to be flying that to Chicago at the end of May! I'll be in chi-town for a whole week and hope to spot some at ORD :)
Flightline we do have a great spotting venue here... let me know if you do stop by and I'll try to make it out to see you.
man look at that beautiful triple 7!i can't get enough of those bad boys!
+Nat Turner It's kinda cool we pulled in right next to one there in Chicago and you can see just how much higher the 777 wing is compared to the 747.
No reverse?
can't remember if they used it or not.... the sound quality is not great.
+jeffman61 actually back in the day, that flight would go onto Hong Kong I believe.
Spectacular video! Posting some inflight southwest videos soon!
+KTMVT2 Very cool! When I can't go flying in real life I like to do it on UA-cam....
amazing video
must have been an amazing experience
liked!!
+Keyshawn Sure was! savored every bit of it.
We're did you go on your flight
Sorry actually it was united
But I've been on continental
but why they use 747 for such a short flight ?
Sometimes the volume of demand for travel at a certain time dictates a big plane :)
Good thanks
Thanks for watching :)
Awesome Video, big like. I have a question though. While you were in SF did you record any planespotting videos and when will those come out?
+italianpizzadude 20 Didn't get the chance to this time but I do plan to return to many cities in the near future for extended planspotting videos...
ME GUSTO MUCHO EL VIDEO Y VER COMO SE VA VIENDO EL ALA
+Jorge Acevedo GRACIAS!!
Simple as that ;)
Que coisa linda😍😍✈ Mecânica de Aeronaves apaixonada pelo gigante 747.
Parabéns pelo vídeo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
747-400 has very good acceleration
Thanks for watching :)
It’s so satisfying to see how fucking far those flaps extend
Super nice!!!!!!
+Central PA Spotter Glad I could share this experience with you, man!
Very cool! Wish I had the luxury to fly.. ✈️
I wish United and Delta order some B747-8s.
Great job... video and sound audio...and all of flight ✈️ crew

You are the wind beneath my wings
Thanks 4 watch!ng
+Sheri-myvideos I have flown in the first row on a SWA 737 before :) the seats are kinda the same for the most part through-out the airplane though...
yeah I knew that business class is not the same as first class:) I might go to the back again.
***** Sweet! you know I'll watch when you get it uploaded.
Aww thanks for coming back to Chi-Town! Tell me- how long are you here?
+grahamboaviation Was there for a day and now back in Minneapolis planning my next trip :)
+Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD ah alright, I might go to see ANA Star Wars today!
+Sheri-myvideos wishing you enjoyable and safe travels, Sheri! glad to hear of your adventures.
8:38 - Did I just hear a cat meow?
lol.
I got an ad of pet food when i clicked on the time stamp. Coincidence, I THINK NOT.
Starting at 2:23 very cool!!
+Sheri-myvideos getting that Delta 767 on the roll was very exciting for me.... filming an airplane on departure from that angle is pretty hard to do.
yeah that looks hard to film from that seat. I am always running to the back of the plane the easiest angle to film. I think about sitting in front of the engine but i am afraid that i would be half bent just to get it in the video and i wouldn't want the guy next to me to think i am crazy. Well see maybe its not hard to get a different view.
I can't believe the snow in the Sierra Nevadas.
Amazing
Gazabbbbb👌👌👌👌
Thanks for watching :)👌👌👌👌
So weird, to use a 747 for a domestic route I flew American from Chicago to SFO in a 737!
Equipment allocation is down by computer to minimize loss and maximize revenue.
Starting at 5:05 very cool
+Sheri-myvideos I have to agree ;) One of the challenges of flying on the wing of a jet this large is the window is small enough and the wing is big enough that sometimes getting enough views of the landscape of the earth below can be difficult. Thankfully, I think it turned out OK.
I was just at SFO on 4/4/16 and 4/7/16!(mm/dd/yy)
+Brennan's Flight Factor Imagine that ( : great world travelers fly through the same great airports. ;)
+Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD I guess so!😀✈️
Hi Jay...I have a update...I changed my flight the other day from leaving Friday to leaving Thursday, the boss had gave me an extra day off without even knowing that I had wished I left Thursday to go to the Balloon glow that evening.
+Sheri-myvideos COOOL!!! happy travels.
I always wanted to fly on the 747 but it hasn’t yet.
same, a little bit tired of 738/320 =)
thought they stopped flying those crusty old planes? We got the dreamliners from SYD-LAX now which are much better then those old clunkers.
This has to be kind of an old video, you never see airlines flying 747's that short a distance.
+kdubb 81 United does it for a short period of time every year. They are about to end the service in the next few days,.
There was a time when domestic widebodies were the norm.
+mrtodd3620 I remember those days...
Hmm a 747 doing a domestic flight very interesting.
Used to happen all the time but now becoming quite rare.....
The longest flight I've been on was Bangor Me to panama
COOL! that's an interesting city pair... which airline?
I think i took continental
My grandfather was a pilot
wow! so that was several years ago..
I subscribed
maybe we could get somebody to wash the flaps? they were filthy !
I second that.
Just purchased a Southwest ticket from Chicago to Cleveland for $356.96 which includes the early bird. That's exactly half my paycheck though. Bittersweet.
When you flying? I'll be there to watch your landing!
end of May
***** what day and time frame? I can take pictures or video of your plane if I can know that.
are you saying if you knew what time my plane took off you would film it?
Do you live by Cleveland?
