I’ve always loved airplanes. I can’t remember a time that I didn’t. When I was 3 we were on a night flight from Caracas to Miami on a PanAm 707. Somehow my dad knew the Captain and had told him about my love for planes. Maybe an hour or so after takeoff a stewardess came and took me to the cockpit. The Captain asked me, “do you want to fly the plane?” He then proceeded to set me on his lap. And as I sat there holding on the control yoke, looking at all the lit instruments in the otherwise darkened cockpit I knew right there and then...”This is what I want to do”. I remember all that like it was yesterday. Today I’m a Captain with United Airlines flying the 777. And Coincidentally my favorite time to fly is at night. I just wish I could bring every little boy and girl that shows an interest up front and allow them the same experience. For little did that Captain know, he set on the course for the rest of my life.

When I was a little boy we lived in the Panama Canal Zone. My earliest memory of flying was maybe age 3-4 or 5 flying to STL with my parents to visit my family on leave. My strongest memories are of being so excited that I ran up the wrong tailcone stairs of planes lined up to take on passengers. Of looking out the window at the field of blue taxiway lights -a sea of blue as far as the eye could see. (To this day I must have a window seat) Of walking on the tarmac under the wing of the biggest fastest loudest thing I’d ever seen. Of asking my mom over and over “are we ‘up’ yet?” (Cruising altitude). Of the stewardess inadvertently waking up my mom coming thru the cabin with her cart. Of stopping in Florida on the way. Of landing in STL greeted by grandpa wearing his best suit and hat who kneeled down and asked me if I knew who he was. I did. I thought it seemed a silly question haha. To this day in spite of all the drudgery of flying I try to keep that same child like excitement of actual flight itself even these 50 years later.

Sometime about 1977 or 1978, Jimmy Carter arrived in Providence on one of the original 707 AF-1 aircraft. I think the longest runway was a little short of 7000' back then. Of course, on departure, it wasn't going to take off with a full passenger and fuel load.
I can smell the kerosene from here.
You can tell the guy shooting the video is a true aviation fan: who else could spend over 6.5mn focusing exclusively on a close-up shot of the engines at take-off, not once filming anything else (landscape, the sky, buildings... you name it?)... The 707 needed nearly 50% thrust to get moving when fully loaded but after the initial break away the thrust was reduced. This video takes me back to great times in airline flying.
My first time flying in a 707 was in 1964 and I remember reading on the flight safety card a description of what sounds to expect hearing from various systems like the hydraulics and landing gear. The 707 was a reliable plane back in the day when you dressed in suits to travel long before the cattle call flights of today.
Now imagine 8 of these instead of 4. Here comes the mighty B 52🛫

I remember flying on 707s as kid in the late 60s and early 70s. The plane wold taxi to the end of the runway. With the brakes locked, the pilot would rev the engines up. The whole plane would be shaking. Then they would release the brakes and the plane shot forward, then down the runway and into the sky. It was GREAT fun.
Every time it roars "Is it gonna take off now?"
There is nothing like the sound of those four Pratt turbojets spooling up to that in-cabin whine that reverberates throughout the plane. Thanks for posting this wonderful piece of nostalgia.
IMHO, the Boeing 707 is the most beautiful airplane ever built. The 4 JT3Ds at idle created such a sweet sound! When I was an air traffic controller decades ago, I had the pleasure to both fly in cockpit, and work with these fine aircraft. If I close my eyes and concentrate, I can still hear those TWA 707s on the tarmac....
I wish airlines had the resources to offer legacy flights.

There is nothing like the classic, powerful, noisy, smoky 707 on takeoff. That was a real treat to see that on film.
Now that's what a Boeing 707 should sound like. Love the buzz of that fan.
I know newer engines are quieter, more powerful, and more efficient, but I've always liked the look of the older turbofans a lot more. These just look so much more like what I think of when I hear "jet engine."
When jets sounded like jets!
I am lucky enough to have flown internationally on the 707 in 1970. A good solid feeling plane that gave confidence over the deep ocean, yet small enough and sufficiently exposed to the sound of those jet engines to give a wonderful sense of flight. Modern airliners might be relatively quiet and stable but they insulate you from the feeling of being on a wing and a prayer. They are like overgrown buses whereas the 707 was an aircraft that inspired the imagination. Love those engines.
I like that harmonic which all 4 of the engines together give off, almost like a cool metalized triangle wave on a synthesizer.
The brave 707.
This was Brazil's presidential plane for decades, retired in 2013. It was purchased by the Brazilian Air Force in 1987 from a local airline, which originally acquired it, brand new, in 1968. It justly received the nickname "Sucatão" from the population, something that translates as a huge piece of scrap metal or junk, due to the decades of service and various mechanical problems.
The "Junk" FAB 2401 was dismantled in 2014.

The first plane I few on was a 707. My father, mother and 5 kids were on the line to step up on the access stairs on the tarmac, when my father's friend who worked on the airline came walking up to him and told him that he was able to upgrade his seat, so he moved us from the last stair on the back to the one on the front. That was first class. I was 13 and my brothers were younger. We were super excited about the whole thing and stayed awake for the whole 7 hour flight. We ate so many tings I was wondering how all the food that they were rolling in on carts got there. Back in the days when passengers were treated as customers.
And the customers/passengers knew how to act, as well.
I love the sound of the engines roaring when I'm in a plane I always sit by the wing side.

I remember when I was a 7-year old flying from New Orleans to Baltimore on a 707 to visit my aunt for the summer of 1974. I was a smart kid who knew all airplane types. I remember my view of the wing and engines was exactly like seen here in this video. Brings back incredible memories.

I remember traveling in the 707's out of Dallas in 1963 when I was 23. I remember one time we had a tail wind and flying west we arrived "before we took off" because of the time zone difference. I took my first flight in 1947 in a Piper. I still get emotional with every lift off. I am taking my grand daughter to Europe on a 747 for Christmas before they disappear from the skies. This will be my 51st Atlantic crossing and it still gives me a thrill .

I can go to sleep with this "noise", I can wake up to this "noise"! to an aviation nuts' ears, like me, this noise is orgasmic!
I recall those as a child and remember going right to sleep once we were in the air, they placed me in a trance, I loved that sound..

I flew a 707 once, Rio de Janeiro to Porto Alegre on Varig, 1987 I think. The view and angle you see here is exactly what I saw, was the whole time hypnotized by the wing + engines. Good times.

I flew on one 707 in the Canadian Air Force, Such a privilege. Thank you for posting this beautiful video. I don't know about anybody else, but those engines just say safety. The raw power of each one of those engines times 4 you would feel like you would never have an issue.

Those engines are awesome.
In the 80's, flying TWA, sometimes I'd be on 707's (mid 80's). TWA's had French/English language printed on things. I loved the spacious feel when i got up to move around and the engine sounds. I could see and feel why the Boeing 707 had become THE most popular long distance airliner of the '60's and '70's. For '80's jets, the L1011 was mine and many people's favorite.
At full thrust I can almost hear Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner " song!

The sweetest sound known to man.
Some 5+ decades ago my dad was stationed on Okinawa and he got to see and hear the near simultaneous take-off of 2 B-52s and a KC-135 (based on the 707) with water injection systems for the engines. That is 20 turbojets screaming at full power.
Just like the 2-stroke motorcycles sounded better than today's 4-strokes, the 707 sounded better than anything except the Concorde!
That sound takes me back to when I was a child ,love it !
Up till the early 80s watching planes take off at open air viewing terraces was an ear splitting affair. You could feel the air tremble, and the jets really screamed on their takeoff run. In the cabin, I love the part when the high pitched whine becomes a buzz as the airplane takes off.
That's an awesome comment thanks for wachting. I guess the vibration inside the cockpit just gives a diffrent kind of feeling thats makes it really special. I also miss the good old plane spotting times, when I fell in love with the aviation industry.

I used to LOVE the 707. It was my favorite plane of those times, by farr. It was soo much fun watching people scared to fly when they were on 707s. You see that type of aircraft had a wing design that allowed it to flap, sway, and flex quite a bit, feet going up and down but I forget the exact specs
The engine mounts too would allow for a ton of movement as well. This was so disliked by passengers that this was the last airliner with a wing designed like that although it was actually MUCH stronger than the wings that are more rigid like is common today.
It would make for really fun flights especially flying through rough turbulence and or storms--yes they used to fly right through storms but don't today either. The wings would be flapping like some huge bird with the engines moving from side to side up and down, many times in differentt directions than each other, it was GREAT!!! But oh my the white knucklers would freak!
Just loved the old 707!! Wish it was still in service today, i would fly it in a second if given a choice.
Back in '68 one Sunday morning, my Dad was helping me with paper route and just after filling the trunk at the paper shack, we turned to a westward heading and in the sky was a 707 or DC-8 one thousand feet high, pitched about 45 degrees with 4 streams of black coal pouring from the engines 2 miles in front of us. I know both of our mouths dropped because it was leaving a small regional airport.
The pilot landed there by mistake the night before. They off-loaded the people and stripped the seats installed two pilots and we saw them ...'hunt for heaven'. Never forget it.

Hi u2mister1... that wasn't by ANY chance Columbus Ohio was it? Because when I was kid, the exact same thing happened here in Columbus! Some numbskull pilot landed at Don Scott OSU airport in a jet plane, instead of Port Columbus.. caused a huge raucous at the time and we watched it from our backyard, that's how close we lived to Don Scott at the time!

Simply music to my ears! Spent the last four years of my USAF career in the 965th AWACS. I love the rolling takeoff here. This crew is not messing around, they shoved the throttles forward and that heavy old bird is "gittin it on!'

First flight ever was in a 707 JFK-SNN in a nor'easter. Incredible high pitch spool up full thrust takeoff with loud sync engine vibe.Updrafts and downdrafts like a roller coaster. The wing flex was incredible. I was looking for the exit...nothing like a first terror flight! Once above storm the 707 cruised like a dream...I was hooked!

First ever time on an airplane flying in a 707 from Columbus to LA for the 1969 Rose Bowl to watch Ohio State play USC. That sound brings back memories.
