    757 pilot here: nicely done even though you didn’t mention my airline ;) Good overview of the 757’s story. Small piece of trivia: the 757’s nose section was originally going to be like the 727’s. It was changed to its current shape to be able to accommodate the 767 flight deck.

    The trio of striped demo livery aircraft: the 757, 767 , 777 really represented the golden age of Boeing. Marvels of engineering in their own respects , all with overpowered engines (excluding the 764) and very responsive controls. Greatest modern aircrafts to ever fly. I'm going to miss all 3 of them since they are on the way out , and of course the 747 too.

    Glad to know the 757 is still flying. It was my favorite plane during the second phase of my frequent-flyer years. I loved the growl of the RR engines during take-off heard from first class. It was surprisingly versatile and AA never failed to amaze me with their choice of 757 routes. When viewed head-on its sleek fuselage and tall landing gear and up-angled wings with 2 huge engines tucked underneath gave the 757 an unmistakable and instantly recognizable profile.

      It was basically a modernized replacement for both the 707 and 727. While the 707 was largely replaced in most contexts with planes such as the 747 and 767, the 757 could be used, for example, on transatlantic flights. It was a more direct replacement in terms of capacity and range for the 707 but ended up mostly replacing the 727 operationally.
      The fact that the only engine available was the RB211 probably limited sales of the 757. Reliable and powerful engines, but also noisy as hell. As someone who flew transatlantic more times than I can count on L1011s and 757s, as well as on 767s with GE and P&W engines, the RB211 definitely took passenger comfort down a notch from the noise.
      The 737 MAX was intended as a replacement for both older versions of the 737 and also the 757. A lot of the problems stem from the fact they made the configuration options too broad, trying to do the duty of two different aircraft classes. That, and board members salivating at the idea of replacing two production lines with one.
      A modernized 757 would have made more sense than excessively stretching the 737 and shoehorning bigger engines onto a low slung airframe, but hindsight is always 20/20.
      A 757-200 was the first commercial aircraft I ever worked on.

    Enjoyable little docu. The 757 is my favourite of all the airliners.
    MY first one was with Monarch Airlines. They were sending their 757s across the Atlantic to Florida from several UK airports years before any other airline did. And it was with them I flew GLA - BGR - MCO in 1994. My first proper vacation that didn't involve a car journey to see family and maybe a theme park. As a result, the 757 hold a special place in my heart.
    My last ride on one was with Thomas Cook in 2008 I think. Fully loaded with passengers and bags, it rocketed out of that short Zakynthos runway with little effort. A job it was born to do.
    The A321XLR doesn't have that raw power.

      I mostly flew the Delta CVG-LGW route but my flight back to the US when we moved back was an American Airlines flight from LHR to IAD on a 757. I also flew their BHX-ORD route a few times, where they used the 767 because the 757 didn't have the range.

      @@fjp3305 For single engine operation. Since the 757 has pretty powerful engines, you need a large vertical stabilizer and rudder to keep the aircraft under control with one failed engine.Especially during slow flight, such as take-off and single engine go around maneuvers. That´s when the rudder and stabilizer has the lowest efficiency. On multi engine airplanes that usually defines the size of the vertical stabilizer and rudder.

    The first of several 757s joined our America West fleet in ‘87 and was immediately put into near continuous utilization on a series of longer routes to new markets including BOS, BWI, EWR, JFK, and ORD. It also ushered in our inaugural first-class service with 190 seats in a two-class configuration. We loved the 757 - there wasn’t anything it couldn’t do. And despite the fact they were ex-Eastern birds, they were by far the most reliable, bullet-proof fleet type - even better than the brand-new Airbus A320s we bought three years later - all of them built for but undelivered to the defunct Braniff III. To this day I carry two PlaneTags as key rings - each of them cut from the fuselage of retired America West 757s I worked 30 years ago.

    As a tool and production manufacturing engineer on the 757 in the 90's I have to confess this airplane was a very difficult and inefficient airplane to build. But through time and advanced technology it got much better, but alas came too late. And with the dip in sales during one of the regular boom and bust cycles, it didn't stand a chance of surviving. Doubly unfortunately, the real replacement, the 797, may not come to fruition in my remaining lifetime thanks to Covid and the 737 Max tragedy. Thanks for the video, it brought back memories.

    I worked for an airline that, apart from a few A320s, the Fleet was 757. Many low cost/charter airlines in the UK and Europe placed the 757 at the centre of their operations. Even with 235 passengers on board a flight from the UK to the USA was possible and was operarated regularly by most UK holiday airlines (Orlando and Caribbean). The airline that I worked for commenced operations using 757s from the recently defunct Eastern Airlines.

    Ending the 757 program was the biggest mistake Boeing ever made.
    They should have ended the 737 after the NG series instead of 757.
    A new, modernized 757X or 757 Max with new engines would dominate the narrow body market.

    • @TheOnlyNoIan
      @TheOnlyNoIan  15 днів тому +4

      I totally agree, I assume the 797 will look a lot like a 757 sized 787 to dominate that market

    • @bmused55
      @bmused55 14 днів тому +7

      No, it wasn't a big mistake. It actually made very sound business sense.
      No one was buying the 757 at the time. The order books were empty. Keeping a production line open with nothing coming through it is just not good business. And the Max was not even thought of yet, it would be about 10 years before Boeing was pushed into that with the arrival of the A320NEO.
      Also, in the early 2000s, there were no new engines being developed that could power an updated 757 model.
      So at the time, with updating it out of the question, no new orders in the pipeline and some airlines actually starting to park their 757s, Boeing rightly pulled the plug.
      (OF course, if they had been able to wait 3 or 4 years, the sudden surge in point to point services between the US and Europe saw every available 757 getting snatched up and put into service. But Boeing could not have known that, and it would also have meant the 757 line sitting empty for up to 5 years, costing hundreds of millions.)

    • @jocelynharris-fx8ho
      @jocelynharris-fx8ho 11 днів тому +3

      The order books were empty back then but in recent years, airlines had been pleading with Boeing to bring the 757 back. When the 757 was inaugurated, they deliberately called the first batch , the series 200, instead of starting off calling it the series 100. When asked why, they said that in the future, if there was a need for a smaller version, they would want to keep that option open. Instead of trying to stretch the 737, they should have made a " baby" 757. Boeing did that with the 747, when they "shrunk it down" to make the 747 SP ( special performance). If they did it once, why couldn't they do it again? 🤔

    • @gonenguldal5782
      @gonenguldal5782 10 днів тому +1

      @@jocelynharris-fx8ho “The order book was empty” is NOT an excuse
      The last 757 was delivered in 2005 and Airbus launched the A320 Neo program in 2010. So it’s not like there are decades between the two, only 5 years which is a short time in aviation.
      Boeing should have foreseen what is coming, that is larger and more fuel efficient engines will have to be used soon.
      When Boeing ended the 757 project, both CFM Int’l LEAP and Pratt&Whitney PW1000G engines were being developed.
      Heck, you dont have to foresee anything, just talk to the engine manufacturers and learn what the new norm will be in aircraft engines.
      If boeing did that, they would know that Boeing 737 will not be suitable for new and bigger engines, then decide to launch the 757X program.
      Boeing kept making the 737-800 until 2019.
      And by 2019, if produced, the 757X would be selling in record numbers. And the B737 program would end with the -800 varient which is what should have had happened.
      The 737 Max should never have been produced.
      Period.

      @@gonenguldal5782no man, you guys are not understanding how the 757 is too heavy and outdated. The 757 simply cannot compete with the A320/321, no matter how much more efficient the engines are.
      It’s pretty simply. To operate the A321 cost $7000 per hour to operate. The 757 cost $12000 per hour. Even with the most fuel efficient engines, you will never cut it down by $5000 per hour.

    • @Lurch-Bot
      @Lurch-Bot 10 днів тому

      RB211s are noisy engines. I flew across the pond in L-1011s a lot during the '90s and I'll never forget that sound. Definitely takes a bite out of passenger comfort, compared to contemporary GE and P&W engines.
      Boeing sold 80% more 727s (the plane the 757 replaced in service) than 757s and I can pretty much guarantee it is because the only available engine was the RB211. In addition to the noise, they also had worse fuel efficiency. The additional 800-1000 sales the 757 should have gotten went to orders for the Airbus A310.
      The Concorde was a deathtrap and a gross waste of fuel and generator of 10x the pollution of a typical subsonic airliner. A completely socially irresponsible aircraft in good company with the Tesla Cybertruck.

      Yes, I fully agree with what you said. Obviously, while Boeing was closing the production line of the 757 way back in 2004, they probably were not anticipating the demand for a similar airplane to the 757 to be as high as it is now. The 737 NG program was very new and also very popular at the time, so as production ceased on the 757 program, they opted to keep the newer 737’s in production. It is very hard to reopen a production line once it is closed, therefore leading Boeing to re-engine the 737 rather than the 757.

      “Who knows why?” Your rhetorical question is demonstrates your understanding of the airline industry. Boeing doesn’t build planes because they’re “cool” - that would have been the Sonic Cruiser (RIP). They build planes to SELL to airlines and the 737 was what they wanted! AA, SWA, Ryan Air - didn’t want a 757 replacement - they wanted a plane that didn’t require crews to be retained and fit their network requirements. Did Boeing screw up with the Max? Hell yes, but we know why the Max happened and why the 757 was discontinued - market forces. If you’d bother to read any number of articles or watch videos about the development of the Max you’d know the answer to “who knows why”.

The 757, an airplane that it’s over 40 years old, and still kicking in some markets. Boeing shot themselves on the foot, by prioritizing the MAX, instead of modernizing the 757 then, and it would have kept on production, and not being the money loser the Max series have become its questionable safety features, and trying to snow ball the airlines when it came for training and type rating. This tired old story.
      The 757 line was closed almost a decade before Boeing panicked over the A320NEO and launched the 737 Max. There was no other decision to be made. The 757 was gone. The 737 was the only way to go, short term. But then Boeing’s new CEO at the time ridiculously gave the 757 replacement market to Airbus when he announced Boeing would not be developing an all new narrow body until beyond 2030.
      Boeing’s decision to close the 757 line was sound at the time. They hadn't received any new orders for several years and the outstanding orders were soon to be completed. No one was buying it as those that needed them already had them. Boeing is in the business to make money after all and having a production line sitting empty wastes a lot of money.

    So many people having comments about how Boeing should’ve kept the 757 line open or re-open the line now. These are all opinions without acknowledging that the 757 is simply too heavy and too expensive to operate.
    I love the 757. But you have to acknowledge that some designs can’t be modernized enough to make it relevant in today’s market.
    So what’s the real story? Well, the 757 cost $11,000 to $12,000 per hour to operate. The B737 Max or the A321 cost $6500 to $7500 per hour.
    So on a 10 hour trip, it cost almost $50,000 more, carrying the same amount of passengers.
    You will never ever bring that down to the same levels, no matter how much weight you save or how efficient your engines are.
    Then we have the people who say that the 757 out performs the XLR. But it doesn’t. Only if you compare both at their maximum takeoff off weight. But when you do that, the XLR can fly almost 1000 miles further. So a true comparison is if you fuel the XLR for the same range as the 757. Now the XLR will be well below its maximum take off weight and it will out perform the 757.

    If it's anything like the flight simulator it's an awesome aircraft and it handles very well at low speeds. There'll never be another.

    Back when Boeing was run by Aircraft experts and amazing engineers! Boeing has lost all of that today, run by Harvard type MBA’s who have no love or expertise in aerospace 😢

    The 757 was and still is an amazing aircraft. I sincerely wish Boeing would have done modifications to it rather than the 737.
    While there's no arguing the success of the 737 let's put some things in perspective: The design phase first 737 was just as far away from the dawning of powered flight (approx 60 years) as we are from the design phase of the 737 in 2025. Instead of true innovation, as was done with the 747, 757, 767, 777 and 787 programs, the 737, originally intended to be a smaller aircraft to serve regional and short-haul destinations, has been endlessly re-tooled, re-fitted, stretched and modified to the point where it cannot even board passengers without the use of a tail stand to keep it from tipping back. The 737 itself is a derivative design having an almost identical fuselage profile when compared to the 707 and 727, designs far older. We're at the point now where Boeing has done everything in their power to get the 737 to the maximum allowable changes before it's mandated to be a new aircraft type -- which is why it's called the "MAX." This aircraft is not designed for comfort, it's designed for profitability. It's designed to reduce the expense of training flight crew on new aircraft types and to haul as many passengers as possible using the least amount of fuel per passenger as possible. Fuel economy is admirable but not at the expense of shoddy workmanship, and short-term thinking. Now Boeing has no choice but to sell these aircraft but I wonder where it ends? How and when do we punish the poor decision making of executives when historically they continue to survive with impunity? If the people calling the shots don't fear consequences of their actions, of course they're going to pump and dump to please shareholders. It's okay, the taxpayers will bail the business out in the end and none of the personal funds of these individuals are ever touched.
