The thought of hundreds of thousands of pounds of steel, aluminium, plastic and fuel flying 7 to 8 miles high at a speed of 600 mph with hundreds of lives on board never ceases to amaze me. Seriously, think about that. My great granny was born in 1879. As a kid, she traveled west at about 20 miles a day on a good day. It took the family an entire summer and nearly everything they owned to travel across the country. When she passed in 1978, humans could buy a ticket for a few hundred dollars, just a few days worth of work, and travel 600 miles in one hour. Sit back, eat a questionable meal, eat a bag of peanuts and have a Diet Coke while you are hurling through the sky at a rate of 6 miles a minute. My father climbed the ladder of commercial aviation history like none could today. He trained on an open cockpit biplane. He began his airline career in 1942 at age 21 as 1st officer on a DC-3 with Pennsylvania Central Airlines. Within two years he was DC-3 captain. Pennsylvania Central eventually became Capital Airlines in 1948 where he captained the DC-4, DC-6, L-049 Constellation, and Vickers Viscount (the first turbo-prop airliner). In 1961 Capital Airlines merged with United Airlines where he went on to captain the Boeing 720, the DC-8, the Stretch DC-8, the DC-10, and finally the B-747 which flew from 1972 until his mandatory retirement at age 60 1981. He experienced the full evolution of commercial flight, airline pilot for 39 years and Captain for 37 years. No airline pilot over the last 50 years could experience the revolution and massive change of commercial flight like my father did. He just recently passed away in 2019 at age 97. He was one of the last of the old school breed of pilots.

jpg36c: Me too. All the excitement starts at the airport with huge planes outside waiting to take you away to far away lands where you never been before.
its the technicality of it all that's so easily organized and motioned by people that have an equivalent level of education as a doctor. Watching It makes one life less manic in return.
yeah now imagine that you're driving, can't see anything, being totally dependent on some dude in front of a screen telling you where to go. Hundreds of lives depending on the perfect running of radar/radio technology 100% of the time so you don't hit a mountain or another plane.
Take a minute and think about this Its 2020 and we still use this setup. The sheer amount of buttons, switches and toggles, not to mention instrument clusters is astounding. These pilots have to memorize every one and it takes using each and every one of them at some point to make this plan do its job correctly. Such an amazing machine and marvel of technology that's taken for granted
I agree it is an amazing machine and marvel of technology. It took thousands of people to develop what we have today. As far as being a pilot, you just have to memorize the sequence to perfection. Most importantly know, if your machine has any malfunction, what to do and how to do it or you're dead.. and everyone else with you. That is a huge responsibility.
The buttons are not the challenge, the procedures and FAA rules are. Planes are (relatively) easy to learn but the rules of the game are massive and ever changing.
10:56 Captain, protects the throttle, Incase the FO knocks it, class display of attention to detail. Love the testing of the control stalk during push back. These guys triple check before they take you in the air. Reassuring
Thrust lever is not something which need protection at that altitude in fair weather. F/o cannot just “knock off” a thrust lever on a Boeing. For Boeing even if it moves a little here and there, it will comeback. For Airbus if it moves, it will cause a ECAM and need crew intervention. But nothing significant. But yes, sometimes we do this as a reflex action though it is not required. 😊

@@2o4II112II26o2 umm, I'm pretty sure it doesn't do jackshit to a behemoth like a 747 (or in any aircraft in general) haven't heard of any aircraft accidents over a plane running over the runway lights or planes being damaged cause of it, I have seen alot of in-cockpit recordings and its safe to say you're just being a smartass
I always say thank you to the crew and pilots when the plane lands. I have a great deal of respect for them b/c my heart skips a beat every time I’m on a plane😂
Real professional pilots there was no change in their voices which tells me they were confident in the aircraft and in their own skills. A great video, thank you.
It’s strange that when you watch a plane takeoff from the cockpit POV it looks as though it’s going really slow while you watch it from a passengers POV you’re hauling butt down that runway.
Its easy..because the velocity which we experience is the relative velocity....Now as for passengers, we mainly see sideways....so that we see the buildings, towers and other aircrafts....hence there are lot of things comming in our vision which are stationary....hence we feel the speed. But for pilot...he sees mainly in front....and the front is clear...with only runway in front. Hence there are very few stationary objects in the vision....hence relative speed experienced by pilot will be less...
I dont know why this showed up on my feed today, but this was fascinating and i have a new found respect for pilots. Flying looks very complicated! Nice job, pilots!
The A380 is an overly expensive eyesore. Not too mention 40 years to late, the A380 was a bust from the start, AirBus hasn't even gotten anywhere near breaking even on it and never will.
Queen of the skies! The 747 will be around a long time due to being able to load through the nose, for cargo. The 380 with that middle deck (which can't be removed) ruins it for cargo.
@@truckerhershey7042 Aye tell me about it. I remember learning to weld on a old 'N reg' Volvo estate. The floor had fell out of the drivers foot well and we couldn't afford to get it fixed, thus the welding lesson from the old man. The Volvo would be considered a write off these days.

Impressive on the complexity of flight and the pilots who continually transport us all in the safe manner they do. I can't imagine knowing what it feels like to have the safety of so many in your care on a daily occurence, not to mention times of distress or malfunctions.
justforever96: Nope, not even in the same league. If the bus stalls or anything else unexpected happens, you just stop it and call for assistance. On a plane, there is no such thing as a "time out." Besides, the bus is not moving at 600 mph at 30,000 feet in the dark!

@Austrian279 Hi there - most runways as 50m wide - 2 foot to one side is as good as in the centre as it makes no difference. Ego is dangerous in the cockpit as it suggests reduced self-criticism and that prevents continual learning, so, again in the long run could become dangerous.
@Austrian279 He was being filmed and I don't think any pilot would deliberately shake-up his instruments by running over the centrelights for no other benefit. Perhaps I'm thinking about it too much but my chief flying instructor once said ( when doing a pre-flight, where you had to check the strength of things )..he said...no, don't touch that x,y,z ( thing ) to see if it is securely fastened.....because if every pilot does that every walk-round then eventually it won't (be)... so his point was - don't induce mechanical stress that you don't really need to. Unlike for example a heavy steel ship built for the ocean...an aircraft is equisitely engineered to be 'just' strong enough ( with safety-factors, of course, but fundamentally )..so it has to be treated with a lot more care and carefulness...treated like fine china, when you have the chance.... Sooner or later something will break / shake-loose, fall-off, stop working...and why bring that date forward...that was my sort of point; but thankyou for your replies also and best wishes :-)
@Austrian279 Hi there - you might be right on the first point, we'll never know for sure. They say, on your second point, that "there are old pilots, and bold pilots, but no "old, bold" pilots! "
Even today it's been 25 yrs ihv been traveling in plane. The take off & the climb still gives me goosebumps for my life. It's like those engines defying gravity & taking us up there
I commend the bravery, guts, discipline, and responsibility undertaken by these guys. some weather conditions are just so challenging. i took off in a chipmunk in Wales when I was a cadet once. it was so windy, the plane was -just rising after take-off without moving forward, the wind was calm above the clouds and then we flew. i thought that was the end that day. the pilot was calm, and i was just thinking 'this guy is nuts!'
I have the utmost respect for these pilots and those in the tower ! Always in contact with each other. So many buttons and dials to keep track of and engage or disengage! Absolutely amazing knowledge and skill!!!
As someone who is terrified of flying, when those engines revved up, my heart started racing and I’m breaking out in a sweat. Takeoff is worse than landing. Twenty plus years and I cannot get over the fear. But much respect to pilots.
Why are people disliking this video? It’s just reality. There are no politics or polarizing opinions - it’s just two commercial pilots doing their jobs and flying almost a million pounds through the stratosphere. What’s to dislike?
Okay if evolution does exist, and you see everything in this universe has very complex designs, especially humans who have millions of working components, do you really believe an explosion caused that??? That’s like saying that a new species is created everytime a bomb is exploded and if you say the explosion is not big enough, I’m sure if we exploded the sun it would not create a creature or a new species of human. It’s like a tourist asking a New Yorker , “who designed the Empire State Building?” And the native tells the tourist “ no one, it was created by an explosion and it suddenly appeared” the tourist might as well think the native is a junkie.
Rickie Sanchez I don’t know by the fact we’re literally are designed and have body parts that have designated jobs, because last time I check people don’t have an eye on their ass, I’m pretty sure that would be the case if we came from an explosion 😂
Very exciting! Almost a 40 second roll-out, than all that thrust lifting about a 900,000 lb bird off of the runway! I love hearing those engines' pitch go up when he pushes the throttle forward. What it must be like to pull the yoke back and bring that aircraft into the air! Gear up, wipers off, and away they go. Thrilling! +K Butler commercial airliners always had computers (ever since they were put in application), of the old generation type, which were in fact more risky! ... Computers nowdays are much more advanced, even in error detecting and correcting processes, and usually (if I am not mistaken) those planes have at least two extra back-up systems ... etc.
It seems the flight is so much smoother in the cockpit than the rest of the plane. I am a very fearful flyer and don’t fly without an Rx. Wish I had their confidence and calmness. Total respect for pilots.
My dad was an aeronautical engineer at Boeing. He also owned a Cessna. My father in law was also retired air force and a manager for the FAA. Flying is in our blood.
I was thinking the same thing when it be easier if they just had a drive position reverse position in the steering wheel and then it would just be able to take off and land. all these little buttons pushed here and there and clicking here and push it over there and click and click clickety click click click
As many times I’ve traveled, when I hear those engines ramp up for take off. Goosebumps!!! Then the feeling when landing gear lifts off the runway. Smiles. The experience of flying to my destination, sometimes, is the most enjoyable part of my travels.
The engines are amazing. Under full power and stress at take off, you very rarely hear of them failing. Goes to show how well engineered they are and maintained. The stress the engine parts are under at full power dragging that lump into the air must be immense. You'd think something would give now and then. Yet it's almost unheard of.

Amazing career ur Dad had..My Dad was similar..Capt.DC3,6,9,10,727,& 747-200 w/UPS..He was old TTA turned TX Intl.turned Continental(he striked)747's w/Evergreen..straight into UPS..43yrs.total flying..Definitely old school guy..Still alive & kickin@82❤❤

Sometimes I get nervous driving my car in the rain at night. Pilots are amazing.
yeah now imagine that you're driving, can't see anything, being totally dependent on some dude in front of a screen telling you where to go. Hundreds of lives depending on the perfect running of radar/radio technology 100% of the time so you don't hit a mountain or another plane.
@Skipbo000 pilots have instruments to make sure they can fly without even looking out the window if neccesary, cars do not
Take a minute and think about this
Its 2020 and we still use this setup.
Take for granted? What does that even mean? What should we do?
A lot of those buttons are for emergencies like if an engine fails you can use the power of the other engines to relight it. Stuff like that.
Becoming a pilot is only for the smart. Hats off!
I've never been so captivated watching other people work. Totally amazing.
10:56 Captain, protects the throttle, Incase the FO knocks it, class display of attention to detail.
Love the testing of the control stalk during push back. These guys triple check before they take you in the air. Reassuring
Gavin Dunne
Noticed that too.
This is a cargo plane. They were the only ones on the plane.
Damn, you 2 are buzzkills!! I'm sure the cargo even appreciated their triple-checking...
Nuck Chorris hey did you know that this is a cargo plane? No passengers except the two pilots .. just cargo 😂😂😂😂
SOOO much respect for the pilots. I can barely run my smart phone. Looking at that panel is mind-boggling.
He's running over the runway centre-lights with the front gear; bad practice I would say as why subject the avionics to unnecessary high-frequency juddering and jarring and shaking; quite surprising how little mechanical empathy some people have. Or worse - did his ego make him steer straight just to prove that he could...even if the only evidence was the running over of the runway centre-lights. A few feet to either side and there'd have been no juddering at all - surely that would be much better for the long-term fatigue life of all the electrical connections, sensitive avionics and instruments in the cockpit.
@@2o4II112II26o2 its not a bad practice, nothing will happen to the aircraft
@@2o4II112II26o2 umm, I'm pretty sure it doesn't do jackshit to a behemoth like a 747 (or in any aircraft in general) haven't heard of any aircraft accidents over a plane running over the runway lights or planes being damaged cause of it, I have seen alot of in-cockpit recordings and its safe to say you're just being a smartass

Thank you. Great video.
I always say thank you to the crew and pilots when the plane lands. I have a great deal of respect for them b/c my heart skips a beat every time I’m on a plane😂

I thought merging onto the interstate at 6AM in the rain in the dark was difficult. Huge respect for the men and women who fly these huge planes.
Seriously 🥺
hes not competing with anyone else, to the side or behind.
@Rockwell Rhodes they’re called traffic lights buddy
That’s a really poor comparison tbh
Real professional pilots there was no change in their voices which tells me they were confident in the aircraft and in their own skills.
A great video, thank you.
It’s strange that when you watch a plane takeoff from the cockpit POV it looks as though it’s going really slow while you watch it from a passengers POV you’re hauling butt down that runway.
No different from looking out of the side windows of a car rather than the windscreen. Smaller field of view means it looks faster.
Yes!!

Flying...one if not the most beautiful thing in the world.
I dont know why this showed up on my feed today, but this was fascinating and i have a new found respect for pilots. Flying looks very complicated! Nice job, pilots!
I don't care what people say about the A380 and how great it is. The 747 is the best plane that will ever exist. What an icon she is.
The A380 is an overly expensive eyesore. Not too mention 40 years to late, the A380 was a bust from the start, AirBus hasn't even gotten anywhere near breaking even on it and never will.
Love the 747 and 777 but ive never got to fly on either haha but i will say the oldschool 737s have always got me home safe probably 30 flights
Queen of the skies! The 747 will be around a long time due to being able to load through the nose, for cargo. The 380 with that middle deck (which can't be removed) ruins it for cargo.
@@donanders2110 Yeah. That middle deck is literally the plane's backbone.
It must be boring driving a car, when this is your daily.
Cars are becoming like that. All electronic with lots of bells and whistles. Pretty soon they'll be driving themselves, just like airplane autopilot.

My best wishes to all the Pilots. You really do a great job and do it so professionally. I admire your skills. May God bless you and may you have happy landings. A job so well done. Just brilliant !
I used to fly these in world war 6 back when i was a teenager -- best times of my life !
Impressive on the complexity of flight and the pilots who continually transport us all in the safe manner they do. I can't imagine knowing what it feels like to have the safety of so many in your care on a daily occurence, not to mention times of distress or malfunctions.
About the same as a train engineer, bus driver or ship's captain feels.
justforever96: Nope, not even in the same league. If the bus stalls or anything else unexpected happens, you just stop it and call for assistance. On a plane, there is no such thing as a "time out." Besides, the bus is not moving at 600 mph at 30,000 feet in the dark!
@Хелло тхере Why do you feel that way?
being a commercial or military pilot is a big challenge
There's nothing quite like the way your heart pounds as you begin to build speed down the runway just before liftoff ~~~
Cee Note I feel that way when im about to take a eartha kitt.
Cee Note I agree but once your in the air it's pretty cool...
Cee Note omg I was thinking the same ! When he said let's go and the engines became louder my heart started pounding as if I were in the plane!

Cee Note your life belongs to the pilot from that moment on 😀😀
pilots are so professional In general. amazing

Shot out to all the Great Pilots worldwide for the such amazing job and professionalism....
If I just pressed the right buttons could I do this?
@Biyonzo mess up the take off and no autopilot will be able to save you
@Payness Honourchign You'll respawn at the most recent checkpoint
Yes. The difficulty is knowing what buttons to press in different situations.
Maybe....if you could have Charlton Heston telling you what to do.

@8:52. Best Feeling applying full throttle and hearing all four engines start up...must feel like being on a rocket.
Amazing !!!!! Nothing like the Wright Brothers first flight.
I'm not afraid to fly, just afraid to need the puke bag in front of others. Motion sickness keeps me on the ground. 😥
go experience dude ! life is short
I love the sound of the turbofans when they are just leaving the ground. Power.
Why are people disliking this video? It’s just reality. There are no politics or polarizing opinions - it’s just two commercial pilots doing their jobs and flying almost a million pounds through the stratosphere. What’s to dislike?
I have respect for all pilots, when flying they have our souls in their hands.
patp these guys are flying cargo, not humans
One of the most incredible feats of human evolution..
I beg to differ.. More like God-given ingenuity. 😁😁
Jerry Perry I never said it couldn’t
Ferus SF then what makes you think we’re so special to have been created by an omnipotent being?
Rickie Sanchez I don’t know by the fact we’re literally are designed and have body parts that have designated jobs, because last time I check people don’t have an eye on their ass, I’m pretty sure that would be the case if we came from an explosion 😂
FINALLY a video where they show the cockpit crew engaging in activity while in actual liftoff. Took me too long to find one, thanks. Very nice video.
Take bow to all responsible pilots in the world 🙏
Absolute respect for what these pilots do. Man.
Thrilling! I'm a GA pilot and have been up in the flight deck to see it in a 747-400 but I'll never get to feel it. Thank you for posting, we love your channel.

It's not that bad! ...
It use to not be that way! I felt far far safer before planes became flying computers and computer components!
+Grifo BR very well said!!
