Forgetting the trinity of Batman , Superman , and Wonder Woman---
This made for tv pilot instead forgets the best and settles for the rest.
Focusing on D list team members like Fire , Ice , and The Atom and putting them alongside B listers in Martian Manhunter , Green Lantern , and The Flash.

I think that pilot's big problem is wanting to do something you can do rather than doing what you want. They couldn't use the trinity and they didn't have the budget so they ended up doing this strange, unmemorable thing. I think the Lois & Clark show suffered from a similar problem but they knew how to deal with it better.

You have to understand this was trying to be an adaptation of the Bwahaha JLI era of the Justice League, which was basically a sitcom in comic form.
Although it's not even a good adaptation of that imo
The Giffen and Matteis era is very adored by old fans who saw it at the time but I think it's the last thing you want to see when it comes to seeing the JL in live action.

I actually rented this one at the local video store as a vhs.
I thought it was a fever dream or knockoff movie for years and never realized it was a discarded pilot until I was an adult

I actually wouldn't mind a more "B-listers" Justice League show centered on comedy. Just switch Flash and Atom to Booster Gold and Blue Beetle.
Just make "Supper Buddies formerly knows as Justice League" show. Booster, Beetle, Fire, Ice and let's Guy Gardner. Make it a superhero sitcom mockumentary, but make it work well.

NBC tried to do that years ago, but with normal humans in Metropolis. It was a show with Danny Pudi and Vanessa Hudgens called "Powerless." It was canonically set in the DCEU/Synderverse. You've probably never heard of it.
It was supposed to be Guy Gardner and Ice, who has a relationship in the comics.

The Legends of the Superheros from 79 was a lot better than this "Justice League" mess.
Every time that pilot is mentioned I remember the same story and it is the fact that I started watching this movie a few minutes after the beginning. So for a long time I was wondering who the hell this Green Lantern was and basically my candidates were Jordan or Ryner. I almost fell out of my chair when I heard someone say "Guy"...
The Legends of the Superheroes was arguably worse than THIS JLA.
I've actually seen this in two separate edits. The first on a bootleg tape that I got off my old comic shop. That version did not have the Office-esque cutaways.
A few years later, a friend in England recorded the Channel Five broadcast and sent it two me, which I had converted from PAL to NTSC. That version had the cutaways. I wonder if the cutaways were even in the version the US network saw and rejected, but were instead included in the version sold for broadcast overseas to pad out the running time for a TV-movie length running time.
Unfortunately, I trashed my VHS's of this many years ago so I can't compare running times.
The copy I have is 1:12:50. It has the cutaways.
Oh my god, it's been years since I saw this as a kid and I always thought it was either some commercial my imagination made into movie or just fever dream
I gotta admit that the roster looked pretty cool. A Blue Lantern? The Flash? Atom? Martian Manhunter? Then they were burned to the down.
It was green lantern not blue. They made him look bluer due to the lack of green screen. I like the roster and costumes for the most part. Not atom.

Like, Guy's mask is the only greenish thing about him in this and even that's a blue-leaning teal; heck, even his casual outfit is blue-coded. I'm not trying to start anything or whatever, just wanted to point that out

One thing you can say about this pilot, though: at least you can see it. Compare it to the Generation X pilot, which was way too dark. Granted, dark show hide a low budget (poorly dressed sets, bad costumes, bad makeup), but it's still something to say.
Also, is this truly worse than that other bad Justice League live action outing, Legends of the Super Heroes? I know the latter wasn't called "Justice League", but that's what it was (just like how Super Friends is a Justice League show). Granted, Legends actually has Batman (Adam West at that), but it's nowhere near the quality of the 1960s series it was clearly trying to ride the coattails of. But I guess we're bound to get a video which at least mentions the two in the same breath.

I saw this in the 90s. The comic shop owner had a copy of this and the Fantastic Four. So, when people say The Flash sucks. They haven't seen these movies.
Btw that is Davd Krumholtz; also known to play Bernard in the Santa Clause movies 1 and 2 along with having a cameo in the Santa Clauses tv show on Disney Plus.
I think the guy who has a crush on Fire is 18, since that seems to make the most sense logically from what's implied

i feel your pain. i reviewed this pilot for my own show a few years ago, precisely to get people to AVOID it. to not suffer as we have.
What could have worked is if the Martian Manhunter and the Flash were survivors of the first iteration of the team, which did consist of Superman and company, and that what we were watching was the MM rebuilding the team to the point where we, as the audience, could find out what had happened, and that the first iteration of the team were still around, but required measures to rescue them from a "big bad", like Starro or Despero. That search for the missing JLA could be done during season 2 of the series, before we get to season 3, featuring the original JLA, along with the new team. And, yes, you can have a rotation of Superman, Batman, WW, etc. depending upon the mission, where you don't have to worry about conflicting IPs.
It looks like they hired all the production crew from Black Scorpion and asked DC what characters they could apply this treatment to.

The idea of an office style show of the dc universe is a perfect idea.

oh god, they brought Miguel Ferrer into this mess. Credit to him for being a working actor, but he was already leagues above this. I wish he had a more prominent villain role in the DCAU, though he at least got to be Deathstroke in one of the later movies.
The cartoon, Avengers United They Stand, had the same problems, too. Including no Avengers holy trinity on the roster on a permanent basis.
Yep. I forgot about this movie. Just as an FYI this was the era of the JLA/JLI series...which were actually best sellers at DC but were major comedy comics. Martian Manhunter was addicted to Oreos...Fire and Ice were the sex pots. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle were the cooky friends who were always getting in trouble. Strange times to be a Justice League fan
Two things I found most annoying about this film.
1. The Green Lantern here is called Guy Garderner while looking like Kyle Rainer.
2. Green Lantern's costume not being green.

They were trying to get another Superman movie made, Batman was still in cinemas and I think they might have had plans for Wonder Woman...so..B-Team it is.... they probably should've skipped this

I remember watching this while my ship was in port in Chinghe Korea. At a Laundromat on a freezing cold day. It was weird made more so watching this.
I actually HAVE seen this movie... it was campy carbage but still had a way better plot than the new Justice League movie. They managed to actually have developed characters thanks in large part to the weird choice to film the entire movie like they were on a reality show. Unlike the higher budget Justice League movie that doesn't really have characters.
It made the CW look like the MCU of it was somehow 10x greater than it… and if you’ve seen the end of flash or some of the other ones… dang

Boy are you right. I actually watched it twice to be sure I wasn't mistaken. The costumes were a joke and who thought that Maj. Winchester from MASH was a good choice for The Martian Manhunter. He should be put in an asylum. This was not only the worst JLA movie but one of the worst movies ever. It's even worse then Roger Command Fantastic Four movie.
I think it was better for Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman to not show up in this movie, I don't even wanna know how they could've look like in this "thing".

I would have been just getting into comic books around this time; not brand new, but only regularly buying them for a year (or less!), and I stuck to Marvel back then. So I think of the team based on the lineup they had during the Death of Superman crossover, which I only read because my uncle had purchased the TPB for it, and let me read it. That contained Justice League #69, and the team lineup was Bloodwynd, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Fire, Guy Gardner, Ice, and Maxima. If Superman was still a regular member at the time, it read more like he was a former member and it was a crossover.
*Think **_that's weird?_* I didn't even remember the above _clearly._ Not only did I only really recall Guy Gardner, Fire and Ice *but* it turns my memory copy/pasted them over members of Justice League Europe, because _Justice League Europe_ #37 was my first Justice League(ish) comic! I dunno if that was the only comic book that looked remotely interested on some random shopping trip, or random issue grab bag (that were a semi-common sight back then). So I _should_ have remembered Aquaman, Crimson Fox (Vivian d'Aramis), Doctor Light (Kimiyo Hoshi), Elongated Man, Flash (Wally West), and Power Girl. Batman also was in that issue, but they made it clear it he wasn't a regular for the team. Since I remembered the lineup totally wrong, I was only able to identify the correct comic because I remember the shtick of Deconstructo (that issue's villain).
*You read this far?* I'll mention that, with my mixed up memories, based on what Vee showed in the video everyone felt _wrong._ I can't be sure kid me would have either noticed it or cared, but adult me is like "No thanks!" Sure, I've had a _little_ more exposure to the characters over the years, but not _that_ much.
This pilot was based on Justice League International, which is one of my favorite comic series. Needless to say, yeah, this thing was pretty terrible for butchering it.
I feel like you can go pretty far with a Justice League show shot like the Office. It would just take you through the everyday work of the Justice League fighting villains, but being very low-stakes and more focused on the comedy and the way characters bounce off of each other.
I saw this just after it was made. Almost said 'released', but 'escaped' would be more apt. I was a huge fan of DC and Marvel and had been since the 60's, as a small boy.
Having seen several sub par Marvel movies, and the 1966 Batman series, which falls into the 'so bad it's good' box, I didn't have high expectations of this effort.
Even so, I was disappointed. One expects minor changes - we already knew life on Mars was absent or extinct, so changing J'onn Jonzz's planet of origin would have been OK with me, I think.
That was not the kind of change we saw, though.
Ersatz Hal Jordan was not a test pilot, but a white collar worker. Barry Allen was not a forensic scientist, but a slacker with clear mental issues (ring any bells with a later depiction?).
Ray Palmer was bumbling, overweight and a clown.

Ugh. Do yourself a favor and read the Giffen/DeMattais version of the Justice League. AKA Justice League International or JLI. That is the tone and vibe (and many of the characters) they were going for here, with more of a comedic take, as opposed to constant superhero action.
That run was actually one of the more popular eras of the comics, despite not often having a list heroes on the team. Now granted this version went more for a super-powered "friends" approach, but that was the style of the time. I think it could have worked.
My only issue is this Green Lantern looks and acts more like Kyle, but they named him Guy. Give him a bowl cut, make him 100 times more obnoxious, and give him the romantic subplot wit in Ice instead of Atom, and we'd be on the right track. Throw in Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and maybe even Elongated Man, and it'd be perfection!
I think the Marvel equivalent would be the POWER PACK pilot episode.
So that was what the Cryptkeeper was doing while he was alive.

Parks and Recreation is a mockumentary...I think it just did some different things with it but the way the entire thing was shot was still "documentary" like.
I'd say The Atom wasn't exactly disliked or forgettable at the time.
I know CW made him more popular thanks to Brandon Routh's portrayal, but even before that the cartoons made extensive use of the character.
At least the "Legends of the Superheoes" [1979] had the saving grace of being a COMEDY.
It was this bad, but it intended to be, and the costumes and effects were comparable to this movie.

That was definitely the worst version ever, since it was like watching a bad adaptation of a Walker, Texas Ranger mixed with a Friends episode that definitely missed the mark on so many levels.
