I can't tell you how awesome this was for kids born in 1984. We all raced home, had our blank VHS' and VCR's ready, and were glued to the TV. The time slot relied on dull adults to move it forward though. The marketing was phenomenal.. on arcades, posters, the comic shop, commercials.... and then they stick in a late night evening slot 1 time. It's actually not that bad for a comic book movies from the 90's.
It was a British production marketed towards a young American audience. In fact it had to be edited to be shown here in the states. I think a remastering and a little polishing up wouldn't be such a bad idea. there is a fandom for this movie that would buy it up in a heartbeat.
Even IF It's Snippits From THIS Telefilm; I Just Wanna See It As Being Cannon in SOME WAY! Though I Highly DOUBT That ANY Of These Cast Members Would EVER Reprise THEY'RE Roles!!
Wait, is one of that villain the same actor who plays the time traveller from TNG, the one who claims to be from the future but is just a conman from the past who found the machine?
I remember seeing it when it came out, I think it was on Fox, or wb? It was like plucking characters from The New Mutants, X-Force, X-factor, X-men, and made up some characters for the show, I was heavy into comics at the time, so seeing the commercials for this had me hype! It’s not great by any measure, but this was way before the x-men and spider-man movies, so I know its hard for people to understand how things were before the internet but when this came out, the internet was in its infancy, and what we had were books, TV, and magazines, so seeing finally some superheroes getting their own movie was exciting for us comic readers.
Bumper Robinson, who plays Mondo (the one who was Polynesian) was in Family Matters and recently playing additional voices in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and played Deadshot in the SSKTJL game. He has been busy.
I can understand them eliminating Chamber and Husk due to the budget, but still don't understand getting rid of Synch. Sure, his power in the comics has a psychedelic aspect to the way it looks, but that wouldn't be hard to pull off, and anyways, they don't need to put in the visual aspect. At a basic level, his power is to copy the power of other mutants around him, which should be quite easy due to the fact that he'd only be using effects they already had in their budget. Especially if they only had him mimic Mondo, Buff, or Emma, since none of them in the movie really had powers that required VFX. Penance being gone is the most understandable, though. Would have been a nightmare under their budget to try to figure out. Sadly, no Artie or Leech, either--those two are the best duo Marvel has ever come up with, and nobody can change my mind on that (and Franklin Richards was a good addition to the dynamic as well).
#TylerLabine Actually Portrayed A Version Of Chamber in The Arcade; As He Warns Jubillie About Mr.Playmore. Same Thing with Xavier's Son; Legion (Curtis). There ARE MANY #EasterEggs!
The villain Matt Frewer was in a lot of good movies in the 90s.. honey I shrunk the kids and national lampoons senior trip are 2 of my favorites with him in it
Rather confusing how someone like Skin made it in but not Husk. Even taking the budget into account. Skin doesn't stretch like Mr. Fantastic (as seen in the dubious 90s CGI). He's basically got several extra feet worth of skin he can manipulate (or at least, at the time this movie was created/aired). In fact, for a while he was drawn looking more like a shriveled old man than a teen. *What does this have to do with Husk?* At a glance, her powers sound _really_ special effects intensive; she's basically a shapeshifter with a gimmick of ripping off her outer layer of tissue (husking herself) in order to do it. Except it is pretty easy to shoot around, due to that aspect. You don't need a careful, expensive CGI transition from Husk's current form to whatever she's shifting into. Sound effects and implying some/all of it happened off screen would do... and probably look better than Angelo did in the film.
How did husk remove layers of skin while wearing clothes?i did enjoy the teasing banter between banshee and emma.costumes, writers dont have heroes wear armour under their street clothes anymore but i wonder if they ever tried wearing two sets of clothes.very bulky, very uncomfortable .
I remember this movie because I had the comics. Back then, I thought it wasn’t bad at all. I was in my early twenties…Guess I should rewatch it (or not!).🤔💭
Oh, 11-year-old me recorded this when it played on Fox, and I showed all my friends. I loved it at the time. Movies always changed comics when adapting them, so I didn't take offense.
Im old enough to have watched this when it aired on Fox back in the mid 90s. My whole fam sat down and watched it with because i was so geeked out, they wanted to know what all the hype was about. I honestly believe it only aired once and was never brought up again.
This was bad, but back in the 90s we were starved for anything X-Men based. Its biggest shortcomings is its budget, choice of characters, and a lot of the story.
It was on Fox, it’s a product of its time. So it has that tv goosebumps filter coupled with its virtua fighter 2 arcade love, like that x files episodes around then with jack black in it and opens with playing virtua fighter 2 in an arcade. Kids nowadays don’t get how big fox was back then.
I watched it on release. Thought it was fine. Again, you have to judge on the curve of the 90's and TV. This is a more entertaining movie that "Steel" for instance.
4:48 Bro Frank Castle as *Kingpin* .. the roster of mutants they picked sucked Skin got too be 1 of the worst mutants , they could have picked someone kooler like "Sunspot and Boom Boom"
The characters are mostly based on an X-Men comics spinoff series in the 90's. The first year or two of issues was a good read and adds a lot of context to what this movie is trying to emulate. The cast really tried, but this movie is definitely limited by its budget and the sfx technology available at the time. As for the cursing, adult content, etc. There was a big push in the 90's to market comic books to adults like the Watchmen, Dark Knight, and a few others managed to do in the late 80's. The problem is that most of the time, it wasn't done with mature storytelling or complex social commentary. Usually, the artists just drew very sexually explicit panels, and the writers cussed a lot. That's how we got the Snyderverse 👎👎👎 Those cameos are priceless tho 🔥🔥🔥
I didn’t know Jubilee was Asian at the time, seeing she just looked like a white girl with black hair in the cartoon to me. (When she actually looked Chinese in the last season I was confused) The X-Men game in the background reminded me of the Double Dragon game in the movie.
A little known fact is chinese we're considered white until the passed off some racist. Basically the same racist paper that smeared black people also smeared Asians. BUT get this... it was never the original authors intent. It was just a theory put up for peer review by a German doctor. The work would be stolen are reframed by a white supremist euginisist. The paper has been disproven a thousand times by now but still the incorrect version is taught in schools. There's no such things as five races. Also... this paper was picked up by... Hitler during a trip to America post WWI. So half of that war coulda been avoided. Furthermore the entire eugenics thing was shut down by top white supremist who felt that was too negative even for them. History is weird!
Generation x , nick fury, justice leage all had tv movies and weren't that bad its just become popular to knock them and people forget that they were tv pilots
Yeah, back when people weren't offended by every little thing and could take a diss without crying to the cops and people would just watch a movie and either like it or not and move on.
They DID end up working this into something completely new. It was called Mutant X, and was actually quite good, and got three seasons. It was still produced by Marvel, but had no connection to the X-Men or the Marvel universe, because 20th century Fox had exclusive filming rights to X-Men at that time.
@6:30 Altough i haved previously seen it as a child air on a foreign channel, i would instantly 'recognize' him, and really appreciate him in another role as Taggard from the tvshow Eureka
Every point you made is spot on , but Vee IMO you should have at least made the point , that since Fox made this pilot trying to hopefully catch onto some of the X-Men 90’s animated series fans , while working on the major motion picture & deciding not to use any of the mainstream heroes or villains that were planned for that first trilogy of X-Men movies …🖖🏾
I completely forgot about this movie until now and had no idea it was a failed pilot for a TV show. I remember watching this as a 12yo kid and thinking this must be the first live action X-men adaptation and was so excited but ended up being somewhat disappointed by the end. I still appreciated the effort though cos back then the only superhero live action stuff we got was mainly Batman and Superman. It wasn't until the late 90s and early 2000s that Marvel began making their own superhero movies so you kinda had to just appreciate what you got even if it was terrible lol. Nowadays we are swamped with superhero content which is crazy in comparison to how it used to be.

That's just a slice of his filmography, the guy has been in *at least* one thing you've seen.

Holy moly! I didn't know that anyone else even remembered this existed! That's awesome! This was actually my first interaction with the characters of Emma Frost and Banshee. You could go so far as to say that it inspires me to really go deeper into the comics. I still have it from where i recorded it on VHS from when it aired on Television.
No joke, I used to watch this movie every month when I was a kid, it used to play on TV in the afternoon at least once a month, I loved this movie, it was the pinacle of superhero movie when I was a kid, now I realize how bad it was, but it still has a special place in my heart.
Hey, we all did a lot of things when we were young that we now regret. Heck, I was a big fan of "Knight Rider 2000"!!
This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. I watched it as a teenager when it aired and it wasn’t perfect but I was still grateful we had an X Men movie, sort of lol I was a fan of the Generation X comics
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew EXACTLY what movie you were gonna talk about.
Matt was Trash Can Man in the first TV adaptation of The Stand
And he played it to perfection.
The thing that stands out to me about the film more than anything is that Mondo is played by Bumper Robinson. Yes, Bumper "The Voice of Falcon, Deadshot, Cyborg, Bumblebee, Rook, War Machine, Black Lightning,..." Robinson. So at least his Comic Adaptation pedigree wasn't tarnished by this, though I think the only time he's specifically returned to the X-Men franchise was voice Bolivar Trask in the Origins: Wolverine Game.
I KNEW it! He sounded EXACTLY the same as Falcon from TSHSS
@@henrygarcia39 That was a different guy, Alimi Ballard, Bumper voiced him in Avengers assemble onward.
@@AussieDragoon Well shit
Vee at that time what Emma Frost was wearing in this show , was far more conservative then anything she wore in the comics , in or out of her costume 🖖🏾

6:36 He was also great as Rat Man in The Stand (1994). Talking about chewing scenery.
Wait, is one of that villain the same actor who plays the time traveller from TNG, the one who claims to be from the future but is just a conman from the past who found the machine?
Yup. He was also in honey i shrunk the kids and the voice of the new pink panther cartoon
Matt Frewer, I also fondly always remember him as the conman in TNG 😅
When Jubilee is your most well known X-Men in the show you're in big trouble.
You get it's based on a different team right?
I remember seeing it when it came out, I think it was on Fox, or wb? It was like plucking characters from The New Mutants, X-Force, X-factor, X-men, and made up some characters for the show, I was heavy into comics at the time, so seeing the commercials for this had me hype! It’s not great by any measure, but this was way before the x-men and spider-man movies, so I know its hard for people to understand how things were before the internet but when this came out, the internet was in its infancy, and what we had were books, TV, and magazines, so seeing finally some superheroes getting their own movie was exciting for us comic readers.
So mad at how they did M in the movie. Shes amazing in the comics same with Skin and emma
This kinda reminded me of The Gifted, you know, that OTHER X-Men show that came out around the time of Legion
Ah yes, the 90s camera tilt, the twin brother of the 90s fish-eye camera lens.
Bumper Robinson, who plays Mondo (the one who was Polynesian) was in Family Matters and recently playing additional voices in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and played Deadshot in the SSKTJL game. He has been busy.
You went to X-men school too?
Not only are you mistaken that I’ve never seen it. I watched it when it came on TV for the first time.
Shame they cheaped out on Husk because with the right practical effects, her molting powers would be AMAZING in the MCU

*What does this have to do with Husk?*
At a glance, her powers sound _really_ special effects intensive; she's basically a shapeshifter with a gimmick of ripping off her outer layer of tissue (husking herself) in order to do it.
They were all the same mansion??? That bizarrely feels so mindblowing to me! 😂
I was 18 almost 19 years old when this aired on FOX back in 1996 and the only thing this pilot accomplished, for me as a fan, was to piss me off!
I remember them talking about Emma being flat and how good the "special effects" made her look ... ample. 😅
I remember this movie because I had the comics. Back then, I thought it wasn’t bad at all. I was in my early twenties…Guess I should rewatch it (or not!).🤔💭
Jim Carrey stole his whole act from, "That man."
😂
I watched that when it aired originally and guess what that’s the best we thought we would get
...I like X-Men Origins: Wolverine...
The animated film Hulk vs Wolverine goes into Wolverine’s origins better than that terrible movie.
@@biguy617 and that's your opinion. Personally, I like X-Men Origins because of the sentimental value of it to me.
@@troyjackson836 are you saying you like Deadpool with his sown shut and bad CG claws on Wolverine? That is what is in the movie.

That print ad really activates my nostalgia. I remember nothing about the actual movie itself.
Oh, 11-year-old me recorded this when it played on Fox, and I showed all my friends. I loved it at the time. Movies always changed comics when adapting them, so I didn't take offense.
I saw this on TV as kid. For the longest time I thought this was just a literal fever dream.
Me too. But I was a teenager. Lol it was so lame. I don’t know how or why I watched it from beginning to end?
Im old enough to have watched this when it aired on Fox back in the mid 90s. My whole fam sat down and watched it with because i was so geeked out, they wanted to know what all the hype was about. I honestly believe it only aired once and was never brought up again.
😅
Some say that Jim Carrey stole his shtick from Matt Frewer
Matt Frewer was also in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Lawnmower Man 2, and The Stand!
Thank you for posting this! I watched this on Fox 2 the night it premiered. I wasn't even in the double digits yet so I loved it. Haha
I remember watching this on Fox 2 in Detroit
I just remember it being just kinda of weird .
To be honest I didn't hate it
This was bad, but back in the 90s we were starved for anything X-Men based.
Its biggest shortcomings is its budget, choice of characters, and a lot of the story.
Don't forget the first live action Danger Room!
Question: Which movie is worse, Generation X (Marvel) or the Justice League of America (failed DC Comics TV pilot from 1997)?
It was on Fox, it’s a product of its time. So it has that tv goosebumps filter coupled with its virtua fighter 2 arcade love, like that x files episodes around then with jack black in it and opens with playing virtua fighter 2 in an arcade. Kids nowadays don’t get how big fox was back then.
I watched it on release.
Thought it was fine.
Again, you have to judge on the curve of the 90's and TV. This is a more entertaining movie that "Steel" for instance.
is it the only Xmen film that utilizes Jubalee and not just have her cameo? is it really THAT BAD, apart from the fart scene?
That's how we got the Snyderverse 👎👎👎
Those cameos are priceless tho 🔥🔥🔥

For years I was unable to convince anybody this was real. They all thought I was nuts or making it up.
@Vee Infuso Please do a video on X-Men Evolution, aka the Teen Titans precursor.
I didn’t know Jubilee was Asian at the time, seeing she just looked like a white girl with black hair in the cartoon to me. (When she actually looked Chinese in the last season I was confused)
The X-Men game in the background reminded me of the Double Dragon game in the movie.
Max Headroom! I believe that he was the Mask in the animated series as well.
Nope that is RobPaulson original red turtle then later purple turtle. Yakko. And alot of other characters. The animated mask included
Generation x , nick fury, justice leage all had tv movies and weren't that bad its just become popular to knock them and people forget that they were tv pilots
Still a better Emma Frost than January Jones
The chick from Origins Wolverine was a way better Emma too.
14:24 I'd react like Stewie if I saw this movie for the first time too.😂
VR Troopers was Waaay Better than this. That's for sure. 😎👍💯

Heather McComb is lovely and underrated. She was a guest star on Party of Five.
Yeah, back when people weren't offended by every little thing and could take a diss without crying to the cops and people would just watch a movie and either like it or not and move on.
Actually, watching Matt Frewer in this video, I can't help but think that he would've made a great Joker.
Matt Frewer also from the Dabney Coleman movie Short Time
They DID end up working this into something completely new. It was called Mutant X, and was actually quite good, and got three seasons. It was still produced by Marvel, but had no connection to the X-Men or the Marvel universe, because 20th century Fox had exclusive filming rights to X-Men at that time.

This video made me really want to watch this movie.
Matt Frewer can actually act. His brief turn in the Dawn Of The Dead remake is proof of that. Too bad he only got to mug for the cameras in this turd.

LOL. Thanks for the video. As a big time X-Men, I remember watching this when it first came out. It was bad, but still good to see it. Born in 1970, I did not get into X-Men until the early 80's. Been a comic fan since 1975, mostly funny animal comics for me back then.

I remember images of this thing at the end of some Marvel comics and the Wizard but I've never seen it.
I remember trying to watch this movie. It was so very bad that I never finished watching it. I do remember getting into a argument with someone about it being an X-Men movie. Not many people I talked to about it didn't believe it was was an X-Men movie. They all thought it was a cheap rip off. When I showed the article about it being based on the X-Men, everyone said that obviously the people who made it never read a comic book in their life.
