To me this song is simply a masterpiece. It has it all. Killer bass line, awesome guitar riff and solo, powerful drums, driving vocals, quiet reflection, driving rock. You name it!
Ronnie James Dio was never a guitarist, though he did indeed compose on guitar. He was, however, originally a bassist, and a very good one. On the eponymous debut album of his first hard rock band Elf, released in 1972, Ronnie was both a singer and a bassist. After that the band was augmented with a young jazz virtuoso named Craig Gruber (RIP) on bass, who later followed Ronnie to Rainbow and was even a contender to replace Geezer Butler in Black Sabbath in 1979, when Geezer very nearly retired permanently from the band. Ronnie's very first instrument as a child, however, was the trumpet, which would explain his amazing lung capacity! Jimi Jamison (RIP) of Survivor fame had the same background, and also lost very little of his vocal capacity before his untimely passing in 2014. Dio is killing it? That's all Dio does, everytime. Dio is the greatest for a reason, And geezer Butler's bass work is always good, one the best bassists out there.
Dio is definitely top 3. Dio, Halford, and Dickinson are the top 3, arguing what order they are in is pointless because there is no second or third place only a distant 4th.
@@collinnicholasns ironically those are also mine haha for heavy metal at least for alternative hard rock Maynard James Keenan all the way for progressive Rock/Metal that’s a hard one
"Dio's killing it" made me burst into laughter. I mean, pretty much the greatest heavy metal singer of all time. Yes, he's most certainly killing it :D
I think that Geezer stands out more when playing with Dio. Dio's voice allows Iommi to go harder with solos and play more dynamically, which gives Geezer more room at the bottom of the sound to show off. 'Master of Insanity' off of Dehumanizer really stands out as a Geezer showpiece.
When Ronnie Join their Black Sabbath the first song he wrote with them was "Children of the sea" same album, but watch the '83 live version.....its's Epic!
Dio is credited for all lyrics on the Heaven and He'll album as well as music with iommi, butler and ward. In fact Dio was playing bass at one point due to issues Geezer was having trouble. Although the whole band is credited for the music Iommi has long admitted that some songs were completely him and Dio.
@@hank35682 All 4 members got writing credits during the 1st 8 albums with Ozzy. In reality Tony wrote the music, Geezer wrote almost all the lyrics with Ozzy just changing certain words or phrases . He also did the melody lines. .
Another great song off this album is "Neon Knights". It's a nice and fast jam. Tony Iommi mentioned in an interview (not that long ago) that his favorite solo to play is from "Neon Knights". And Dio is in top form as well. Great vid as usual, guys!
Neon Knights kicks bloody arse mate! Though I'm partial to Ozzy's vocals on the title track Never Say Die. Another Kicker but from an earlier time: 1978! Cheers!
"Neon Knights" absolutely fucking rules. As does the rest of the album, tbh. "Children of the Sea" and "Die Young" are every bit as epic as "Heaven And Hell," IMO. It's a great album.
You guys DEFINITELY need to check out "Mob Rules" next by these guys. Ronnie sang on this album as well and this song is so badass and has an amazing catchy riff. You guys will love it!! PLEASE listen and react to it!! Thanks!
x2 BUT..... ya gotta listen/start with the track just before Mob Rules, titled E5150. It's an intro to Mob Rules itself (they run together) & really sets the stage for the song.
Ozzy returned to Sabbath for their last album and tour. But had the occasional tour before then. Dio was there relatively briefly but made a great contribution to the legacy of Sabbath in that time.
In 1980 Sabbath did a world tour called "The Black and Blue" world Tour promoting the Heaven and Hell album. It was Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult touring together....wanna talk about EPIC!
Saw the Black Sabbath farewell tour in 2017. It was their third to last show ever. It was fire. The drummer didn't make it but Iommi, Geezer and Ozzy together was one of the best live moments for me.
I saw them on the same tour. Couldn't understand a thing Ozzy said when he was speaking, but as soon as the band started playing and Ozzy sang, it was like he was young again. Amazing show.
Don't recall the year. I saw them on the Reunion Tour at The Palace of Auburn Hill with Pantera opening. WHAT A SHOW!! Think it was '99 or thereabouts...
Man i actually saw them with Ronnie James Dio at Wacken 2009 when I was 16 years old. Couple months later he died. Was an amazing show, and incredible what a powerful voice came out of this small old man
Saw Dio 3 times. 1st in 84, 86 and his last tour. Saw Sabbath 3 times but with Ozzy. Would have loved to have seen Sabbath with Dio!!! DIO brought it hard and heavy every time!!! Always have his all!!!
I'm going to tell you what a great guy Zakk Wylde is: my BIL who was the guitarist in an Ozz tribute band had terminal cancer and Zakk would text him to keep up his spirits and even sent him a guitar!
My first Black Sabbath concert was in 1975. My neighbor slept overnight at the ticket office and scored front row seats for $6.50 each and took me with him. I saw them a few more times including 1978 with Sammy Hagar, Van Halen (the day when Eddie met Sammy), and Boston, the 1980 Black & Blue Tour (co-headlining with Blue Oyster Cult) when Ronnie James Dio was the singer, and the last time I saw them was on their Farewell Tour.
1981 - Hammersmith Odeon, London. Several mates cried off "It's not Ozzy". They sure wish they'd gone with me now. Lonely Is The Word is the best track on the album for me - an exceptional closer.
I actually saw the Heaven And Hell tour when I was in high school. Was my 4th time seeing RJD. I saw him with Rainbow first, then 2x as as a soloist(one being the Holy Diver tour) & then of course with Black Sabbath. I have seen Ozzy 3x(in his prime)as well but as a soloist. Randy Rhodes was phenomenal
Boris Karloff starred in some Frankenstein movies in the 1930s, and also narrated/ was the voice of the Grinch in the animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas 😊
Back in 1976 saw Sabbath in Seattle show was so rowdy a large number of “Hells Angels” were there to see the show then in 81 Black and Blue tour “”Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult” Sabbath opened for Boc in Seattle but in Chicago BOC opened for Sabbath maybe my favorite concert ever
Respect to Geezer for being one of the greatest bassists ever. Wish the guys would have talked more about the bass and the drums during the recap. Still a great video as usual.
Actually DIO reunited with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinnie Appice, under the name “Heaven and Hell” before he passed away…they recorded 1 album and did a world tour…
Dio came back to Black Sabbath under the band name Heaven & Hell (different name for legal issues) in 2007 through 2009 before Dio passed in 2010. Check out their song "Bible Black", great song from a bunch of 60 year olds. That's going to be the closest you get to a reunion with Dio and the Black Sabbath. The 2009 Wacken concert has some great footage of the song "Bible Black", "I", "Falling Off The Edge Of The World", "Die Young", "Children of the Sea" and "Sign of the Southern Cross".
Dio was reunited with Black Sabbath for some years before he passed! But they did it under the name "Heaven & Hell". They released a compilation album, "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years" and a studio album, "The Devil You Know" with a really heavy sound. Later same year (2009) Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and less than a year later he passed. I was devestated when it happened, I love Dio! And yeah, Ozzy's been reunited with Black Sabbath after Dio's passing
So about that acoustic/classical guitar at the end. Even though I prefer CD’s (due to many reasons but this is not the place for that discussion) this is one instance where the Vinyl has one feature that is unmatched. Heaven And Hell is the last track on side 1 of the LP. The acoustic guitar comes in as the needle finishes with the regular grooves and continues into the “run off groove” … which still has the audio on it! And it was recorded onto there so that if your turntable does not have an automatic stylus, the record keeps spinning and the guitar keeps playing forever as a loop. And if I remember correctly, the loop was done so well that you can barely tell when it repeats.
Never miss and understimate the power of third album Dio with Sabbath - it is Great and Terrifying DEHUMANIZER! It was whole another level! Try Computer God, I (one of my favorites), Master of Insanity, Letters From Earth etc. Album is a beast.
That is indeed the album cover for their album Heaven and Hell. When Dio rejoined Sabbath so to speak they changed the band name to Heaven and Hell which I had the pleasure of seeing live in 2007! RIP Ronnie! Edited to add Dio went back to Sabbath for one more album in 1992( The Dehumanizer) then left again. In 2006 he went back and that is when they became Heaven and Hell. So 3 great Black Sabbath albums with Dio!
Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules (Dio's first 2 with BS) are classic rock. So many tracks from those you could and should react to. Glad you enjoyed this one.
I saw Black Sabbath when they reunited in I think 2000??? This was at an Ozzfest. I was about 13 or so. I'm pretty sure Marilyn Manson played right before. But in any case... It was pretty awesome and I was witnessing something special. Seeing Ozzy perform live is absolutely bonkers. I've seen him 4 times. He's a legend and it's so upsetting that his health is declining.
I saw Ozzy right after Randy died, months later, but the tickets were still good. Anyway, it was funny, Ozzy "hung" a monk, a midget in monk's clothes, which was supposed to be Dio.The guitarist at this concert was Brad Gillis of Night Ranger. It was a good concert.
The reaction was tempered a bit by the greatness of this album in April and Ozzy and Randy Rhodes releasing Bizzard in September. Two great albums out at the same time made everyone fairly happy.
Heaven and Hell was the first Black Sabbath album I bought back in high school. I was exposed to Dio vocals first, then Ozzy as my catalog increased, so I enjoy the differences between both equally. I can see where others who were exposed to Ozzy first might be partial to his vocals over Dio. This entire album is absolutely fantastic, there is not a bad song on the entire album.
They were my first gig, in '94. Tony Martin was singing, with a throat infection. It was Geezer Butler's first tour with Sabbath for some years, Bobby Rondinelli on drums. Even that was legendary in my life.
Next up on the Sabbath play list suggestion has to be "God is dead?" from the album "13", vocal wise it is one of Ozzy's most brilliant performances he has ever layed down. Rick Ruben produced this one and it takes you back to the original classic Sabbath sound that made them the household name they are todayyyyyy.Check it out fellas,it'll blow your minds! Up the Sabs!🤘👍🤘
I saw BLACK SABBATH way back in the days at the Oakland Coliseum with OZZY…guess who the opening act was? Go ahead…GUESS! It was VAN HALEN..unreal concert
Yep, iconic riff courtesy of the great Tony Iommi. Vocals by the incredible Dio. Someone (I think Ronnie J Dio) referred to them all as Geezer Butler and the Italians lol
Yes that is the Heaven and Hell album cover and yes there are T-shirts! Little trivia for ya...before RDJ joined Rainbow and Black Sabbath he was in a band called ELF and before that he was a late 50s Crooner! All though he was great in Sabbath, his Solo stuff is still the best of his career.
Dio has a really interesting legacy; he's famous for being in 3 very different bands (Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio), all of which have their own fans, and all of which have legendary albums and songs. I absolutely second the notion that his solo stuff is amazing; Holy Diver's a perfect album, and The Last in Line is damn close to being one. I gotta say though that Rainbow is my favorite stuff in Dio's career. Rising is just too epic.
@@brendantoungate8287 Dio definitely left his mark. He started out as a crooner in the late 50s then he was in a band called ELF before his Black Sabbath/Rainbow days. I gotta say that I Could Have Been A Dreamer is my favorite from Dio....great song!
I guess I already said this before, my bad. If you wanna find out what a female Dio sounds like check out Liliac and their covers of Heaven and Hell, Rainbow In The Dark, Holy Diver, and The Last In Line. Mind blowing how good of a vocalist Melody Cristea a.k.a MeloDia is. You gotta check her and them out!
I remember being at a Black Sabbath concert in the early 70s as a teen, jumping on the stage and standing practically in one of those huge speakers feeling the vibration of the drivers flowing thru me like a wave. Before I was picked up and literally thrown off the stage. What an experience!
The reason this was a " meant to be" situation is that in '79 Ozzy is fired from Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio left Rainbow, and Geezer and Tony wanted to audition singers. Dip comes in with this already written, he was considering using it in Rainbow but it didn't happen. He and Tony jam some time together and get the riff....the rest is a 3 year partnership, with 2 magnificent albums. 🤘🤙
This reaction is 2 years old so you guys probably won't see this. I was an Ozzy purist until I heard this song. Then I was like, f yeah. Ozzy has Blizzard of Ozz with Randy Rhodes was kicking major a$$ and Dio with Sabbath, it was all good. I saw Black Sabbath live when I was 18, it was 1977 and they were on their Technical Ecstasy tour. One of my favorite shows of all time. It was insane. Saw Dio by himself 3 times and the last time I got to meet him after the show. He was so cool and kind, a true gentleman. He appreciated his fans, that's for sure. Nice reaction!
Dio did play bass in his early career but switched to vocals and found his true power. You should definitely check out the latter Dio era Sabbath stuff when they went by heaven and hell (band name) the song Bible Black is a great song and sadly one of Dio's final songs recorded before his death. Great song and show Dio was a god all the way to the end. Definitely worth checking out. RIP RJD 🤘
Guys when Dio was alive after Ozzy came back if you got tickets to a show and the band was heaven and hell that was Sabbath with Dio and if it was Black Sabbath it was Ozzy singing they were both singing and the band name changed depending on who it was. Peace from Stan the Alaskan.
You don't know who Boris Karloff were, guys? Forshame :-) He is the actor best known as the iconic Frankenstein's monster himself. And yes, Dave Walker did indeed replace Ozzy, briefly in 1977. Ozzy was however reinstated shortly afterwards, to be more permanently fired in 1979 and replaced by, in turn, Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, Dave Donato (no album), Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen (no album), Tony Martin, Ronnie James Dio again, Tony Martin again, and finally returning to the band in 1997 and remaining until its final disbandment in 2017. Whew, right? I strongly recommend you check out every lineup listed above, since they're all brilliant in their very own, significative way. You're doing a great job, by the way. Your enthusiasm and instinctive astuteness serve you well in your studies at the school of hard riffs :-D
As you ask 😆, I was 14 when this album came out, 1980. Black Sabbath was on its way to early grave. They were obsolete, a dinosaur, old and tired. Then came this album, and all of the sudden, they were very relevant again. I only learned older great stuff after this.
I was fortunate enough to see them perform this live in 1980 or ‘81 (I forget!) during the “Black & Blue” tour with Blue Oyster Cult, I couldn’t hear properly for 3 days after the concert.
"The world is full of kings and queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams - its heaven and hell" ozzy sucks. dio is king tremendous. much love from Burkburnett TX ;)
Black Sabbaths final concert was in February 17 2017 in Birmingham England where the began their career. It was the best concert I have been to. All original members were there except for the drummer Bill Ward.
In this constellation B.S. sadly made only two studio albums. Years later they reunited with an other drummer under the name "Heaven and Hell", because Ozzy's wife Sharon did not allow to publish it as Black Sabbath. They made one studio recording and one live album at Wacken. And I was there !!! 🤘🥰
I had seen Sabbath just before they kicked Ozzy out of the band Circa 1977/1978 they were phenomenal. Tony Iommi is The Godfather of Heavy Metal riffs…

One of my favorite songs ever, lyrics are phenomenal!
The first time I saw Black Sabbath was. heaven and hell
Although I’m an Ozzy Black Sabbath fan, this is my fav. Sabbath song hands down!
Tony and crew still killin it in 1980...
I was gonna send the live performance but glad you’ve reacted to this masterpiece 🤘
"The Mob Rules" is an absolute must, and even though it came out in 1980 it reflects the past 6 years to a Tee.
One of the greatest. Just do the whole album. Everything is amazing.
"Die young" is a masterpiece too! For better experience, live from Wacken festival 2009!❤ Nice job!
Black Sabbath Sundays 😀
Love this idea, Anthony!
If u loving the bass line, one my fav albums is GZR Black Science.
During popularity of Pantera, NIN, Ministry. It still is a great album today
RIP RJD 🤘
I didn’t know this one, but there is no mistaking Ronnie James Dio’s voice.
Heaven And Hell, 1980, was RJD's first album with Sabbath.
It was the first album that went platinum for Sabbath since 1973. Fans dug it and Ozzy's record. It worked out well for both.
Masterpiece, that' s all 🔥🤘🏼🌈
You don't know who Boris Karloff were, guys?
Dave Walker is currently in blues hard rock pioneers Humble Pie. If you're interested.
What?
I saw the one also.
The MASTERPIECE
Thank you guys! I suggest you react to much heavier Black Sabbath song "Sign of the Southern Cross" next :-)
Karloff was the original Frankenstein!
"The world is full of kings and queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams - its heaven and hell"
ozzy sucks. dio is king
tremendous. much love from Burkburnett TX ;)
Dio has stated in many interviews that this was the best song he had ever written.
One of greatest rock songs ever, musically and lyrically top stuff
Was blessed to see this concert 5 times on the Heaven and Hell tour..
Black Sabbath - Iron Man
1981 McNichol arena, mob rules tour, Denver, Co. one of the best shows I’ve been to in my life.
Black Sabbaths final concert was in February 17 2017 in Birmingham England where the began their career. It was the best concert I have been to. All original members were there except for the drummer Bill Ward.
Tony plays with fake fingertips on two fingers as he lost the tips years ago.
😲😲😲
looks like a song of Iron Maiden "the mariner if i m not wroung" from the riffs and the rest lol !
That whole album is AMAZEBALLS!🖤🤘
Borlis karloff used to be a household name back in my day😢
In this constellation B.S. sadly made only two studio albums.
Black Sabbath w/Dio
Sign Of The Southern Cross
"Do we know this riff?" Everyone knows that riff.
