Here's something else worth knowing....Lynn Ahrens, one of the songwriters from Schoolhouse Rock, DID actually compose this show-stopper of a theme song (who, also later helped do the musical "Ragtime"). Bob made mention of this in his autobio "Good Morning Captain". Try checking it out at either your local library or Amazon, where it is currently out-of-print, but should still at least be able to buy it used or secondhand. It really is a FUN book chock-full of great memories :)
In the late summer of 1981, my Dad taped for me the final 6 hour-long episodes of Captain Kangaroo from CBS (KDKA Channel 2 in Pittsburgh, Pa.) They were still using the "Good Morning Captain" opening. I could just barely remmber this new style opening, but I never really watched the new version. Fortunately, my family still has the tape of those final 6 episodes of the original format shows. We also have some other tapes: the Christmas specials for 1980, 1981 & 1982; which I'm glad to have.
.....seriously, I grew up with Captain Kangaroo and then "Gary Knu" I think Fox put that crappy Space Coasters Show out there, at the time...when I would wake up...my Parents had purchased a black & white TV for my confirmation at the time...every morning, I awoke at age 8, 9, 10??? HAPPY GO LUCKY once I watched Captain Kangaroo.....Bob Keeshan.....what an AMAZING TALENT and SOUL!!!!
CBS dropped "Good Morning, Captain" in 1981 for a new theme song...and a new TITLE, "Wake Up"! The new format and new set didn't work, so it was back to the "Captain's Place" a year later, when the show was cut back from 5 days a week to Saturday mornings, although it was extended back to a full hour and there was a new theme song, "Here Comes Captain Kangaroo", written by Schoolhouse Rock's Lynn Ahrens, for the show's final two years, 'til the very end in 1984!
The very ending of this theme song I've remembered for years. I thought of it and decided to look it up to see if I made that up in my head. I did not. I'll be 43 soon. I read online that he stopped the show in 1984 but they continued to air it and added in new segments until the 90s. I guess this wasn't the original theme song from the 60s and 70s though.
@csc68 Actually, Hasbro owned the Great Space Coaster Supershow and released it thru thier Clastar distribution for syndication. Not Fox. MGM released at least 1 tape of the show on VHS and Beta around 1985
I remember every time the show ended He would inspire kids to go outside and play and do all kinds of fun things! not like nowadays were our kids rather play xbox and be cave trolls so sad I miss the captain
THIS i the intro i grew up with. i believe they played it when it moved over to PBS right? im wondering if anyone can help me with a segment ive been trying remember for a very very long time. i am now fairly certain it was on Captain Kangaroo, because of the claymation that can be seen at the very beginning of this clip. in this segment there are a bunch of happy lil clay blobs running around, having fun, each of them a different color. red, blue, yellow, orange, purple, maybe others. (1/2)
"My fantasy@ home with greg-winslow john david miller & his invisible-troupe inside the abandoned acme-market on route-61 in shamokin land-of messopotamia northumberland-county ioml" 🇺🇸🤠📻.
and then it gets weird/creepy, the group of happy lil blobs are then surrounded by a mass of brown clay, slowly closing around them. and thats where my memory gets really fuzzy. all i remember is they have to work together to get out. oh, and i believe the red blob came forward to be their brave leader. thats all i can remember. PLEASE tell me my brain isnt makin this up!
They reused the footage often from when they came to the Great America Circus to shoot a week of shows in 1977. I was in those shows and would love to see any of the footage. Any ideas? Please contact me.
This new millenium is just full of crap. I would love to re-live the 1980's era. Hey Doc, have are done putting the finishing touches on your Delorean?
This is the version that I grew up with. I love it. I just wish some of the early 80's kids shows would be on rerun.
Me too!
Man got chills just memories from the 80s
Would you believe I remember Captain Kangaroo from the early 1960's? Loved it!

I grew up with this theme, too- both on video AND on PBS.
Woah... I haven't seen or heard that since it was still being aired in the 80s. Crazy. The internet is a wonderful thing, when used correctly...
I remember this version of the show and intro coming on at 6:00am on Saturday mornings on our local CBS affiliate.
I remember Capt Kangaroo from my childhood in the 60s & early 70s. I didn't know he was still on in the mid 80s for I was in my 20s then.
" the captain is coming and you're gonna love it" ;)
Man, these themes back in the day were so catchy.
Loving the old school Sugar bowl hair doo. Lol. Pure 80s nostalgia.
This is the theme I grew up with despite me born in 1987 recorded for me
I loved this show when I was a little kid in the early 70's, didnt realize it was still on in the 80's
I loved watching this when I was A kid.

R.I.P Bob Keeshan.

@jaklumen

This intro was also used when PBS had the rights in America.
Oh My God, I Remember Watching Hearing This Intro, and It Was Unbelievable.

@MEGAMAND1 They even had a special song that they would play on every episode to encourage kids to get out and do stuff!
Snoopy's Biggest Fan Yep! Here it is; such great memories!

Kids born in 1978 had this to watch. Kids born in 1990 had Barney.
Maybe that's why today's 20-year-olds have so many issues.

I know the tapes and PBS used this theme, but did CBS use it in the waning days?
No, this theme was never used on CBS. It was specially written for the PBS airings.
