They came to regret the backwards-facing car seats because when it came to filming, the traditional close-up shots of the driver ,when edited with longer shots that showed the car speeding along, had an unwanted jarring effect on the viewers, especially if they were new to the show and didn't know about the deliberately rear-facing seats. Actually, other way around ^^; captain scarlet's puppets were made to be more movement and expression, to the point they made the puppets realistic..... there is one slight problem withit though. In the first series they had this special system that tried to mimic extreme emotions too, and it reeeeeeally didn't look good XD so they stopped using it after season one..... honeslty those faces got horrific or comedically funny lol
This would be the only time that we would see Captain Black in his full Spectrum uniform as for the rest of the series, he would completely ditch it in favour of wearing black leather jackets, trenchcoats with dark grey sweaters and pants with long boots while fully embracing the entire persona of a Mysteron agent. I also loved that he never ever talked much and was mostly silent which made him more like a zombie but would only say a few words in that deep robotic voice. The glazed eyes, the pale skin and unshaved apperance complimented his new look perfectly. My all time favourite villain out of the entire Gerry Anderson shows.
I love the different take on alien life in this show. The Mysterons were never hostile beings and didn't have the idea of attacking them. They wanted to welcome humans to their world.
And yet they're not intelligent enough to comprehend that the expedition from Earth only attacked them because the mechanism that was observed resembed a gun. A race like that would almost certainly be known for starting agressions against others over misunderstandings.
Yeah the humans were the bad guys in this. They invaded and shot first. The production values in this show are truly amazing. So much better than multi million dollar Hollywood productions of today. Without crap CGI and al that stuff with identity politics. Hell, all the Angel pilots were women. The storylines were so far ahead of their time and really scary but thrilling. Gerry Anderson, we love you ❤
@@bogusmogus9551 I find that argument illogical. It would be like saying police officers who accidentally killed kids who pointed realistic looking toy guns at them are bad guys. The humans had no way of knowing that the device wasn't destructive. It looks like a weapon.
If only Captain Black had just said "Sorry, my bad" things could have worked out different. Also, bit of a over reaction on the Mysterons part, they rebuilt their base instantly, so no real harm done, and i don't blame them for being mad at Capt Black. But to decide to kill all life on Earth! 😲 Bit of a dick move.
When I was younger a boy I used to dress up as Captain Scarlet and watch the videos of Captain Scarlet so many times. Captain Scarlet versus the Mysterons was my favourite video which I owned.
I loved Captain Scarlet as a kid, I have a boxed set of Captain Scarlet DVDs. The Mysterons, Captain Black, awesome adventure. Dark and silly. Puppets. Crude yet sophisticated. More nuanced than Thunderbirds which I also loved. Supermarionation. Team America. Lol.
This show is simply FAB!!! ... I mean SIG! I have been humming this theme song for years, for no apparent reason either! I watched this show religiously as a kid and that must be why.
Absolutely loved this as a kid on Saturday mornings , if i missed an episode, it would ruin my week . The model making was fantastic when you look at the detail . Very dark & trippy on purpose.
What marvellous mayhem! I almost feel like a kid again! Now, if I could just get my hands on the first Thunderbirds movie. It covers the same ground as this episode and makes it clear that it was the hostile and unprovoked attack by the humans that began the war with the Mysterons.
As a kid, the closing titles always upset me. I used to imagine how horrible it must be to die repeatedly, and no one ever seemed to ask “hey Scarlet, how’re you doing buddy? That last death must have been rough as hell. Do you wanna talk about it?” Of course this was before I understood what PTSD is. Spectrum must have had a huge occupational health department.
These unique innovative supermarionation shows are like seeing and hearing some kind of strange alternate earth reality, a parallel world quite familiar and very similar to ours and yet detached and ominously different, so weird, its haunting hallucinatory ambiance. >>>>>>>>>>>>> 10:23
My nieces and nephews now watch Shaun the sheep 🐏. I try to wean them on to bugs Bunny 🐇 and the gang whenever they visit but they still prefer the sheep 🐏
And don't forget Derek Meddings, who was responsible in both series for those wonderful sets and models. His career went right up to the 1990 Batman film.
Gerry Anderson was actually approached by Stanley Kubrick to work on 2001: A Space Odyssey. He turned him down for a reason that seemed right at the time (and which I forget) but which he admitting to being a great regret. The model-making was first rate, as was much of the miniature photography of things like explosions and the raging inferno of a burning oil well.
"We can only hear them over our radios, but I've got a feeling they're with us all the time." Out of all of Gerry Andersons antagonists, The Mysterons are by far the scariest. Unseen, but always there, always watching and always - understandably - vengeful (cheers, Captain Black!). Considering the show was made at the at the height of the Cold War, the constant threat of the enemy within, nuclear war and rhetoric parallels the Mysteron's 'war of nerves' against Earth.
Great to see this. I think Captain Scarlet was one of my imaginary friends back in the 60's. The artwork at the end its fantastic still, glad to see that I could google him. Ron Embleton
just arrive here after looking for 4 Feathers falls ....but i am very happy to discover these collection of series..that never had seen before....A PUPPETS THAT SMOKE...THAT IS AWESOME-...!!!!! IT IS CLEARLY TO ME ...NOWADAY SOCIETY HAS INVOLUTIONED..!!!!
Hollywood actors, with their CGI and multi million dollar budgets cant come with anything near as good as Gerry. This stuff is over 50 years old. Their marionettes were better actors than the assh*les they have in their multi million dollar holly'wood' productions. Those 'actors' are plastic, cant act without the help of some CGI. Boll*cks to them. Gerry is the real deal
The very best Gerry Anderson series of all (IMHO). So many superb story ideas, concepts and designs here, and really thought-provoking and thematically dark like a classical fairytale. The Mysterons clearly find being unjustifiably attacked by other worlds the ultimate unforgiveable insult, even though they have the ability to reconstruct their city, and immediately set out to slowly destroy Earth in response by acts of terror delivered by evil replicants generated from elements of humanity they have murdered, and led by a replicant of Captain Black, as punishment for the man who ordered the act of aggression on them. That would have been good enough on its own, but the character of Captain Scarlet as a unique half human, half Mysteron accident who somehow retains his humanity following copying, but also has the power to - within reason - resist forms of death that would destroy a normal human, and who continues to work for Earth, is the icing on an extremely enjoyable cake. :-)
I remember those 'Captain-in-peril' beautifully drawn artwork at the end credits. Lovely. As stiff as it looks now, you can tell a lot of work was put into getting everything just right. Appreciate it.
I love how when the Angel Interceptors go into a dive, you get the sound effect of a WWII JU87!! I'd forgotten just how much fun this show was, and I know what I'm gonna be doing for the rest of the weekend.... 🙂 🍄
I've just watched this and I remembered everything, I knew what was going to happen, I knew the plot and the outcome. The funny thing is, I watched this in the sixties when I was about six or seven, and as a kid it left indelible mark on my mind. I loved this Anderson program more than the others. This should be remade as a film, with live actors. I shall watch more and I have subscribed. I am gobsmacked about the memory, I don't know what I ate yesterday, but I remember this. KorkytheKat UK
Remember watching this for this first time on BBC 2 in the late 90s along with thunderbirds when i was really young. Use to watch them with my late dad and to this day captain scarlet is still one of my favourite shows to watch. Many happy and cherished memories watching them with him. My dad had a lot of captain scarlet and thunderbirds on video and they use to be my go to watch along with his only fools and horses videos whenever i was off sick from school.
A brilliant show and years ahead of its time. I'll say it if nobody else has, but Spectrum really hung Captain Black out to die. He wasn't a bad man, (though had a moment of madness in ordering the attack on the Mysteron base when he wrongly thought his ship was about to be attacked), but as a Captain he must have had an awesome career with Spectrum doing great things over many years, as Colonel White acknowledges here. Then when he was ensnared by the Mysterons - he was totally suddenly the bad guy - no attempt to rescue him or break their control. Hang your heads in shame Spectrum.
It was Captain Black. And defending themselves from what? A wholly ineffectual attack from a single Earth vehicle that did no permanent damage? And for a supposedly peaceful race, they certainly dialed it up to 11 awfully quick.
My late comment is this: from Four Feather Falls up to UFO those series evolved, in detail, in sophistication and in plotlines. Cptn.Scarlet was a big step up.And we happy kids BOUGHT INTO it, we grew up with those series. UFO was the final step towards adulthood, with real men and women, mixed races and young and old. In respect, Anderson was an Education, now we are his School!
If only captain Scarlet had had the good sense to explain to the Mysterons that they were scared and misinterpreted their welcome for aggression and apologised.
Still to this day, a television CLASSIC. Children's TV with an edge. Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons was Gerry Anderson's best work. Century 21 at the top of it's game
_Dr. Thorne reports that despite his fatal injuries he is returning to life and is no longer under the control of the Mysterons, it would seem this Captain Scarlet is now indestructible..._ I wish Dr. Thorne worked for the NHS, my GP can't even diagnose basic back pain !
When kids TV was good and not only violent. Despite being puppets it was grabbing the viewer as though they were real. Brilliant. Love hearing the great Ed Bishops voice again.
Watched these on UHF as a kid, in the 70s. The entire vibe was grotesque and creepy; the music ominous; the end credits were terrifying. It looks like the end cards were painted by the same guy that painted those horrific BATMAN trading cards in the 60s.
Ethics question: A man who cannot be killed is attacked with a weapon that does him no harm, yet he replies with deadly force. That's answering a weak slap with a shotgun blast, aint it? And it was a kids show. I really love the grisly cavalcade of death in the closing credits.
"I really love the grisly cavalcade of death in the closing credits" Can just imagine adding new stills of Captain Scarlet smoking, visiting a whore house, eating too much red meat, etc. etc.

😲 Bit of a dick move.
outstanding no CGI.!!
One of the BEST pilot episodes for one of the BEST series EVER.
When I was younger a boy I used to dress up as Captain Scarlet and watch the videos of Captain Scarlet so many times. Captain Scarlet versus the Mysterons was my favourite video which I owned.
I saw a familiar name, Ed Bishop. He went on to star in the Gerry Anderson show UFO.
Better acting than eastenders or love island
Absolutely!
You mean there's actors in Eastenders??!! 😱😲😱😲😱
I loved Captain Scarlet as a kid, I have a boxed set of Captain Scarlet DVDs. The Mysterons, Captain Black, awesome adventure. Dark and silly. Puppets. Crude yet sophisticated. More nuanced than Thunderbirds which I also loved. Supermarionation. Team America. Lol.
I did buy the DVDs also. I'll be 57 in a few days !
This show is simply FAB!!!
... I mean SIG!
I have been humming this theme song for years, for no apparent reason either! I watched this show religiously as a kid and that must be why.
what does sig mean ?
These are my heroes and angels thank you so much. Back to my childhood with this!
Absolutely loved this as a kid on Saturday mornings , if i missed an episode, it would ruin my week .
The model making was fantastic when you look at the detail .
Very dark & trippy on purpose.
As a kid I was always worried about that screaming cat in the beginning and those Mysterons creeeeeeeped me out!
...I due remember how exquisitely detailed the set interiors were!
What marvellous mayhem! I almost feel like a kid again! Now, if I could just get my hands on the first Thunderbirds movie. It covers the same ground as this episode and makes it clear that it was the hostile and unprovoked attack by the humans that began the war with the Mysterons.
Its on UA-cam, and on Blue-ray with THUNDERBIRD SIX.
@@Beamshipcaptain Ahaa! So I needn't look far. I thank you very much for your reply!
In that movie, Zero X encounters no Mysterons, just rock snakes.
@@CultureJudge Ahh, thanks! It's been a very long time and memories fade.
I’m 65 this year and this really brings back memories. What a contrast to some of the rubbish cartoons that kids have to endure now!
This is amazing puppetry. Considering that the film makers had no CGI and the technology what we have now. Absolutely wonderful. My respect to you.
I noticed they have black strings attached to their heads, any idea what s i g means ?

Spectrum is green.
meaning everything is a go.
Then you have
Spectrum is red
Which means something is wrong.
@@coreyjay1660 thanks
Now this is a blast from the past. Reminding me of Sci-Fi Channel’s origins.
before it was just reality shows and wrestling?! oh how i miss those days..
The technical difficulties of production of the show is next level and I doubt it will ever be replicated
No, don't think so. You just got on with it in those days, character building d'you see?
Wonderful memories of Jerry and Sylvia Anderson’s productions in a safe 1960s.
I always loved how the Angel's crew room chairs took them straight to the Angel Interceptors.
Everything there is automatic 😂 probably computer controlled probably like lunar vill 7 before it got destroyed
These unique innovative supermarionation shows are like seeing and hearing some kind of strange alternate earth reality, a parallel world quite familiar and very similar to ours and yet detached and ominously different, so weird, its haunting hallucinatory ambiance.

A little ahead of it's time.
I Loved This Show...It Was So Refreshingly DARK For A Kids Series!
Good stuff.
I love these old shows.
Thanks.
I was born in 99 and my dad used to watch these with us as kids. Now that I found it I remember why I liked it so much.
My nieces and nephews now watch Shaun the sheep 🐏. I try to wean them on to bugs Bunny 🐇 and the gang whenever they visit but they still prefer the sheep 🐏
@@alice_agogo Says a lot about people today, in 2021-22.
@@Beamshipcaptain Shaun the Sheep is great. The kids have good taste. They'll probably come around to Bugs Bunny someday.
I remember watching this as kid. Little did I realise that years later I found out they were all based on true stories!
🤣
Both captain Scarlett and thunderbirds were amazing. Major props to the late great gerry and silvia anderson.
Don't forget Stingray and Fireballxl5
And don't forget Derek Meddings, who was responsible in both series for those wonderful sets and models. His career went right up to the 1990 Batman film.
Gerry Anderson was actually approached by Stanley Kubrick to work on 2001: A Space Odyssey. He turned him down for a reason that seemed right at the time (and which I forget) but which he admitting to being a great regret. The model-making was first rate, as was much of the miniature photography of things like explosions and the raging inferno of a burning oil well.
"We can only hear them over our radios, but I've got a feeling they're with us all the time."
Out of all of Gerry Andersons antagonists, The Mysterons are by far the scariest.
Another one of my favorite childhood memories , especially the theme song , I love this stuff !
Great to see this. I think Captain Scarlet was one of my imaginary friends back in the 60's. The artwork at the end its fantastic still, glad to see that I could google him. Ron Embleton
The thing that stands out from ALL the various series is.....the music....fcuking brilliant..
This is the voice of the mysterons, we know that you can hear us, earthman… We all tried to imitate that voice as kids in the early 70s.
Fun fact for you, the voice actor for the Mysterons was the same person who voiced Colonel White.
Grew up with this in the 60's. Loved it
just arrive here after looking for 4 Feathers falls ....but i am very happy to discover these collection of series..that never had seen before....A PUPPETS THAT SMOKE...THAT IS AWESOME-...!!!!! IT IS CLEARLY TO ME ...NOWADAY SOCIETY HAS INVOLUTIONED..!!!!
Spent hours watching this on black & white tv 📺.. blast 💥 from the past 😎
LOVE you for posting this. Brilliant !
Here from Tom Scott driving the SPGK ^^,
The acting in this show is superb, better than anything Hollywood can come up with these days!!!
Seemed wooden to me.
Honestly, the lack of subtlety in the intro scene kinda put me off. But I'm intrigued by this show.
The MC can be pretty awkward at times
@S.V.SaulVazquezJr. You missed the joke.
Absolutely amazing skill and craftsmanship went into making these.
Simply unbelievable. A master piece !
Masterpiece
@@stuartwray6175🚨🚨🚨
"sir, should the mars expedition be crewed by paranoids, and heavily armed? "sure, what could happen?"
They just sent the Americans. It's in their nature.
Last time they went there, they ended up getting shot at by rock snakes.
This has brought back so many memories, thank you.
I remember those 'Captain-in-peril' beautifully drawn artwork at the end credits. Lovely. As stiff as it looks now, you can tell a lot of work was put into getting everything just right. Appreciate it.
Yeah that was fantastic stuff.
Painted by Ron Embleton. Also, the 2001 or 2002 UK Captain Scarlet Calendar solely featured these classic images in large format....
I love how when the Angel Interceptors go into a dive, you get the sound effect of a WWII JU87!!
I'd forgotten just how much fun this show was, and I know what I'm gonna be doing for the rest of the weekend....
🙂

I've just watched this and I remembered everything, I knew what was going to happen, I knew the plot and the outcome. The funny thing is, I watched this in the sixties when I was about six or seven, and as a kid it left indelible mark on my mind. I loved this Anderson program more than the others. This should be remade as a film, with live actors.
I shall watch more and I have subscribed. I am gobsmacked about the memory, I don't know what I ate yesterday, but I remember this.

Much better than I thought it was and I loved the show back in the day. Wonderful stuff.
These Puppets Are Better Actors Than Most Of The People Working In Hollywood Today.
Its a shame they cannot get nominated for Oscars! Captain Scarlet and Captain Black would win every time!
Shout out to Tom Scott for bringing me here.
born in 85 and still got to watch this show befor I was even a teen and loved it.
Absolutely Amazing ! Gerry was before his time.
After all these years I never knew that Capt Scarlet was Cary Grant, it certainly sounds like him.
It was based on Roger Moore
The voice actor was Francis Mathews
Remember watching this for this first time on BBC 2 in the late 90s along with thunderbirds when i was really young. Use to watch them with my late dad and to this day captain scarlet is still one of my favourite shows to watch. Many happy and cherished memories watching them with him. My dad had a lot of captain scarlet and thunderbirds on video and they use to be my go to watch along with his only fools and horses videos whenever i was off sick from school.
I watched them in the 60s and 70s. Check out Supercar, Fireball XL5 , Space Patrol, Stingray all great Anderson creations.
@@RobertGraziose Stingray i have watched before and really enjoyed it
A brilliant show and years ahead of its time. Hang your heads in shame Spectrum.
they blow up an overpass bridge to stop one car!?! this is team America before team America 🤣
Captain scarlet started the war with the mysterons... they were only defending themselves
It was Captain Black. And defending themselves from what? A wholly ineffectual attack from a single Earth vehicle that did no permanent damage?
And for a supposedly peaceful race, they certainly dialed it up to 11 awfully quick.
@@GalapagosPete Like America
#satire lol
Captain Black did it. Scarlet was killed by them on Earth and given indestructability
Commander striker from UFO in the jet pack
My late comment is this: from Four Feather Falls up to UFO those series evolved, in detail, in sophistication and in plotlines. Cptn.Scarlet was a big step up.And we happy kids BOUGHT INTO it, we grew up with those series. UFO was the final step towards adulthood, with real men and women, mixed races and young and old. In respect,
Anderson was an Education, now we are his School!
A brilliant series, extremely dark in content for children, but one of Gerry Anderson’s best ……….
A Century 21 classic 👍
If only captain Scarlet had had the good sense to explain to the Mysterons that they were scared and misinterpreted their welcome for aggression and apologised.
I have some sympathy for the Mysterons, Captain Black & his crew were criminally trigger-happy ! 😂
If that was the case, the series would have ended on the first or second episode! Lol!
One of the best marionette series ever made ... Captain Scarlet is the greatest ...
Stingray
Still to this day, a television CLASSIC. Children's TV with an edge.
Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons was Gerry Anderson's best work. Century 21 at the top of it's game
_Dr. Thorne reports that despite his fatal injuries he is returning to life and is no longer under the control of the Mysterons, it would seem this Captain Scarlet is now indestructible..._
I wish Dr. Thorne worked for the NHS, my GP can't even diagnose basic back pain !
We were spoilt rotten when you think about all the wonderful tv shows ❤
It’s all crap now
This show started my life long interest in everything Capt Scarlet & Gerry Anderson
👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Always had great atmospheric music...
That's why I loved it.
Ethics question: A man who cannot be killed is attacked with a weapon that does him no harm, yet he replies with deadly force.
That's answering a weak slap with a shotgun blast, aint it?
And it was a kids show.
I really love the grisly cavalcade of death in the closing credits.
"I really love the grisly cavalcade of death in the closing credits"
Can just imagine adding new stills of Captain Scarlet smoking, visiting a whore house, eating too much red meat, etc. etc.
No one must be allowed to discover the secret of Scarlet being indestructible. That is the reason the attacker had to be killed.
