+Sly Dumpling If you've got room in your freezer you should experiment with different fibers! I didn't have time to test out stuff like paper towels or tissue paper, that sort of stuff.
+Sufficiently Advanced Hey, if you ever come back to this I suggest you watch the Mythbusters episode about Pykrete. They were testing to see if Pykrete could actually be used to build ships out of like it was originally made for. Regular saw dust Pykrete wasn't enough so they created what they called Super Pykrete which was made out of newspaper and ice. It worked so well and it was so strong that they went and built a boat and sailed around. I think newspaper would be perfect material Pykrete for weaponry.
You know, you shouldn't give the internet such ideas. XDDDDD Officer 1: "How the hell did THAT happen" Officer 2: "IT'S NOT EVEN POSSIBLE" Officer 3: "I know you'l think I'm crazy, but I watched this one video once where....."
i really wish they'd left the sword in that snow with the lights on, waited for someone to grab it, and then told them they were the chosen one destined to slay an evil overlord that would've been a kick-ass video
Wouldn't blood stick to the toilet paper and leave a stain even when the sword melts O.o? Evidence will only truly disappear if it's a sword made of pure ice.
I think it doesn't break because the toilet paper distributes the force instead of focusing it in one point, like if it were a net; or at least it was something like what I saw once in a TV show where they hit a block of ice with cotton in it with a sledgehammer and it wouldn't break. :p But this was the coolest sword ever! (Pun intended)
+Canica Lopez It's less about force and more about energy. To distribute force, you'd need a hard material, not fibres. Fibres use up energy otherwise spent on increasing the length of a fracture (need to avoid at all costs), by stetching, by forcing the crack to go around them (lengthening it needlessly) and by friction with the surrounding material. Also they pull back together any occurring micro-cracks. Compare body armor: titanium or ceramic plates distribute the bullet's force over a large area, while the kevlar underneath soaks up all the energy by stretching.
+Sufficiently Advanced thanks man!! Can't help but add LED's to a project when I can!! Definitely would love to talk LED projects if you're ever in LA!
I just got an idea after watching the blood sword video and this one: what if you make the same thing but you use blood instead of water and meke a blood-pykrete sword?
4:47 You can see the blood of the victim flow red on the icy floor, while the madman laughed at being proven right, his mad invention vindicated at last...

@sufficiently advanced You're the best man, keep doing what you're doing. You provide great tutorials on things that most people would've never thought of, and then you just walk up and then have a simple solution to it.
This was fantastic to watch man, I as so worried it was going to bash back and smack you when you went for that second swing at the water melon when it bounced! So much fun to watch man, I love the things you make dude! Thank you for the content!
Next challenge, Personal Force Field. something that could protect the user from slow moving objects, that did not need to be worn, and could be set up to protect an area.
This is perfect. Each time to cut something with a liquid in it, that liquid just adds to the ice making more ice. Pretty soon you will have a modern art masterpiece
+Braununit I imagine that would escalate quickly. Next thing you know everyone's wearing ice armor and throwing ice shuriken and everyone loses an eye ;)
Can I just say I have learned more about materials and their attributes than in science class, please make your other videos as education and entertaining as this
+Acertive Pillow Yeah, he should have put more effort into it. Like sandpaper it and design it and put a handle on it and stuff. Also the LEDs looked pretty bad. I don't like when people half-ass stuff like this.
+Swedish Otaku I can guarantee that I don't put half assed projects on my channel. If you don't like this ice sword, it's a pretty awesome project to try out for yourself! You can learn from the things I've done that you don't agree with, and all you need is cardboard, tape, plastic wrap, water, and some kind of fibrous material (assuming you've got a freezer at home). You can even document the process and make your own UA-cam video! Just make sure you give me a shoutout ;)
Very nicely done. I wonder how well you could do with projectiles? Maybe, you could have a small dart form 3D printed, then you could make a silicone mold or five with it. Then, use various Pykrete compositions to make something that can absorb enough water to remain structurally stable, but also be light enough to propel with a blow dart gun. As for your next project, I suggest trying to make something that involves actual plasma. I know that it is dangerous to work with, but so is a torch that sprays formaldehyde everywhere. Perhaps a less mobile invention will be able to use a low temperature plasma for something constructive. As electrical arcs are the easiest way to obtain such plasma, perhaps you could use a salvaged transformer to rig something up.
+Ry-No it would break your teeth, Rhett and link made a video with sawdust Popsicles, but they were half pykrete. Rhett still even almost broke a tooth.
Yup. They really should have made the handle thinner. It would have decreased the strength, but at least then it would not handle like a sharpened rock. At least you had some basic feel for edge alignment with this thing though. I wonder what the balance was like on it. :)
Steven Boelke For what? The handle? That was what I was referring to. The whole idea was that the sword was to be made from ice as that was the gimmick. Making it out of plastic or steal would have made it because of course it would, but it kind of eliminates the purpose. :)
+tygonmaster oh no! My bad! I was saying that (in addition to the better handle) if the mold they made it from was more rigid than the cardbpard they used, the blade would be straighter and perhaps sharper.
Steven Boelke Straighter probably, yes, but to get something like this really sharp, they really would have to do a lot of work to fine the edge down. :)

I'm definitely going to make one of those... that was a brilliant design... if one was stuff some where in the frozen tundra and needed protection... you would easily make a mold in the dirt... pour some water and paper or wood or just about anything that absorbs water and make a Pykrite Sword... awesome video man...
i randomly had a memory of watching this video so i thought i'd come back and have a look why it was so interesting in my memory and it didn't disappoint me.
After seeing the pykrete testing on #Mythbusters, this was neat to watch. Your idea of using toilet paper? Excellent. And bonus points for the LED lights.
Not in a snowy area or I would try myself, but if you can try using a hand grinder with some sandpaper on it to get a sharper edge. Should be interesting to see.
I'm wondering how much you pressed the tp. Layering would add to the strength and if it was stronger you may be able to run it through something to make it "sharper." The lights were a nice touch.
Haha love it!

That's pretty edgy
Could you imagine a home defense version thats sharpened, and you keep it in your kitchen freezer? Sounds awesome.
Freezer
+Michael Winter Either should work actually. Pykrete has a higher melting threshold IIRC. That was a typo on my part though, thanks for the point out.

+Ryan Showalter Might be quicker to grab a real knife if you're going into the kitchen ..
