My Mama (1914-1981) used to sing this in the 1950s-60s, and since she's been gone i very seldom have heard a recording of it, so i really love hearing this, it sure brings back fond early memories of her. It's sad that so many people began to quit singing just for their own entertainment the more that records, movies, radio, and then TV became widely available.
Its so sad yet somehow happy too. The simplicity of this song makes it so enjoyable. There's nothing over the top or flashy about any of it- it just paints a picture of a place and time that none of us were alive to see.

The personnel of the American Quartet changed after Moonlight Bay was recorded. I have read that John Bieling stopped singing in 1913, and William Hooley died in 1918.
The American Quartet - as heard in this recording - was only organized ca. 1909 and included the members listed above. The singers listed above are NOT the individuals shown in the photograph. In fact, not one of the men shown in the photograph is among those listed. They MAY be the men who made up the quartet in the early 1920s but strongly suspect that they made up some other unrelated male quartet. Not one - - Bieling, Murray, Porter or Hooley is in this photo. Bieling had retired in 1914; Hooley died in 1918; Porter remained with the group into the early 1920s - but none are present in this image. Billy Murray - lead tenor with his distinctive voice heard in this recording - - is definitely not in the photo shown above. The second image [shown at 1:57 in this recording} also shows none of the individuals heard in this recording. Regarding the statement that the American Quartet was active 1899-1925 - this is also misleading. The ca. 1901-1905 group was actually an early version of the Haydn Quartet, albeit with Albert Campbell and W.T. Leahy as the tenors. The men heard on this current title - "Moonlight Bay" were the individuals listed by the above presenter of this UA-cam offering.
