  • When the Austro-Hungarians invaded Serbia in 1914, the Serbian defenders managed to set up an effective defence. A year later, a combined Austro-Hungarian and German offence is launched to take Belgrade for once and for all. The Serbs mount a final defence as a last stand against the Central Powers.

And we're back with another video! This time we visit familiair territory for Indy: World War One. The Sabaton song Last Dying Breath is about the battle of Belgrade between the Serbian army and an Austro-Hungarian and German coalition. The speech made by Dragutin Gavrilović to his men is especially important in both this episode and in the song. Let us know in the comments what you think of the episode! We hope you like it!

Fun fact: After the battle for the Gypsy Island, Serbian soldiers buried all fallen soldiers, including enemy soldiers, with the highest military honors. They found a letter that one of the dead Austria-Hungarian officers killed in the battle for the Gypsy Island had on him. His name was August Schmidt and he was a lieutenant colonel in the AH army. The letter was unopened, so Serbian soldiers thought it was an attack order. When they opened it they found out that it was a letter from his daughter from Vienna. The Serbian soldiers, led by Major Svetomir Djukic, decided to respond to that letter. The letter they wrote read:
"Dear Miss, with a heavy heart and pain in the soul, although we are enemies, we are forced to be the first to tell you the difficult news that your undead father, a hero officer and commander of the 32nd Austrian Regiment, today heroically fell at the head of his regiment, defending his Emperor, his country and his flag, and in a heavy battle on Serbian soil in Ada Ciganlija (Gypsy Island).
Even though you have lost your father, you have to be proud of him, because he fell heroically and worthy of a knight-hero in the field of parts. At the same time, we inform you that we sent you 4,000 crowns with today's referral, the money we found in your late father's pocket with a letter, and we ask you to inform us about the receipt of this money because we deeply care that you receive both money and letter. We buried your father with dignity and with all honors, marking his grave with an exemplary crusader so that when the war operations are over and peace is established, you can come to Serbia with your respected family and find your father's body decently buried and the grave preserved.
Receive our most sincere chivalrous condolences, that God may give you and others a long and happy life."
They got a reply from Miss Schmidt after a few days:
    "Dear Gentlemen,
I received your letter with the greatest gratitude, although it was completely fatal for me, regardless of your consolation. Indeed, this kind of attention is worthy only of Serbian hero officers, and I am eternally grateful to you for that. I also received the money, for which I also thank you.
In these difficult times for our whole family, your letter is really invigorating, all the more so because our dad really ended his life with dignity. I have already given your letter to many of my friends, with tears in my eyes, to read it, and they cried together with me and admired the attention of the Serbian heroic officers. After this letter, we especially appreciate the exploits of the small Serbian army, which is worthy of all admiration."
Remember this when USA & NATO try to portray the Serbs as war criminals, butchers, monsters, and genocidal people. Today we may be not worthy of our glorious ancestors, but for sure we are not even remotely close to being savages and war criminals who perform genocide and ethnic cleansing, like Western media is claiming.

Wow.... my jaw literally dropped to the floor and my eyes were filling up with tears when I read that.
War is always an ugly thing, and nobody can claim to being 100% rightful in their actions. But those little episodes of respect and dignity also show a beautiful side of mankind. That letter certainly fell into the right hands, and I sincerely thank you for bringing this up here.

Although that is both a fun and deep fact to now know, and I have full respect for those who served in such a horrid war, WW1 and the Balkan wars of the 20th century are completely different and lead by different people. Serbia was lead by a military junta who wanted to expand its borders into Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Kosovo. The leaders were very much right-winged and as much as the troops were just following orders at the time, there was a lot of genocide which the western media at the time did not use as propoganda, because, no one was at war with Serbia until the UN intervention.

„You are not going to the Italian, or Russian, or the French front. You are going into a fight against a new enemy who is dangerous, tough, brave and sharp. You are going to the Serbian front, to Serbia, and Serbs are the people who love their freedom and who are willing to fight for it to their last. Do your best so this minuscule enemy does not overshadow your glory and compromise the success you’ve achieved so far in the glorious German army“. This is the speech that field marshal August von Mackensen held before departing for the Serbian front in autumn of 1915.

The Serbs had their last stand in front of the "Jasenica" kafana, there the soldiers took flowers from a small flower shop and put them on their coats and on their guns as they prepared for one last charge into certain death. Before throwing them into a counterattack, Major Gavrilović rallied them with a call to arms:[2]
Soldiers, exactly at three o'clock, the enemy is to be crushed by your fierce charge, destroyed by your grenades and bayonets. The honor of Belgrade, our capital, must not be stained. Soldiers! Heroes! The supreme command has erased our regiment from its records. Our regiment has been sacrificed for the honor of Belgrade and the Fatherland. Therefore, you no longer need to worry about your lives: they no longer exist. So, forward to glory! For the King and the Fatherland! Long live the King, Long live Belgrade!

Mackensen also had a monument erected on top of a Serbian mass grave near Belgrade with the words engraved "Here rest Serbian heroes" in Serbian and German. There are few examples in history where the victors honoured the vanquished enemy. Another example is Gen. Tamayuki after he had conquered Singapore in 1942, or Atatürk at Gallipoli. If there are any comparable examples of classy chivalry on the Allied/Entente side feel free to post them here.

@@ehrenmann8392 no, we're not started it... war was planned long before austro-hungarian prince was killed... they (austro-hungrians and germans) just waited for a good cause, to justify starting the war... just look at the map of world. you have germany and austro-hungary on one side, bulgaria and ottomans on the other (with mesopotamia within it) with only serbia between, preventing joining the axis in one strong well connected alliance which by the way threatening british colonies on the middle east and north africa and as well the south of russian empire and later, who knows, maybe even the brittish india as well. also that would strong germany and a-h even more in future times if you consider the resources in those areas... on the other hand attack of a-h and germans on serbia and starting the war against russia, france, britain and others would give a good justification for british empire to attack ottomans (german allies) and expand the number of collonies in the middle east and as well to weaken every continental force in europe so they can make their prime foreign policy goal for europe - the famous "balance of the power". we didn't wanted that war. we were just finished with two balkan wars against ottomans and bulgarians (around one year before)... serbia was in a very bad position in that moment for another war especially against such powers as a-h and germany. at the end serbia suffered the most. About the one third (1/3 - 30%) of the entire population was killed and country was devastated... yet our army (with help of allies) managed to make a great comeback in crucial moment and liberate serbia and other balkan nations and destroy the a-h empire.
ps: austrians knew that assassination of the prince is about to happen - serbian prime minister personally warn them about that, but austrians done nothing to prevent it... that's because they needed that... so as some other powers in europe so there are quite good indications that particular assassination was actually organised by other forces in europe... Britain, France, Germany or even austro-hungary themselves...
so, no... serbs didn't started the war but serbs made a great contribution and sacrifice for the outcome of that war...

We have too many stories like this in Serbia, enough for albums. This is one of the best descriptions of serbian mentality:
Friedrich Griesendorf, who died in 1958, was a very educated man. He was at one time a court clergyman for the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. After World War II, he was a pastor in the Eversburg church parish where a camp of Serbian prisoners of war was located. Before retiring, he dedicated these lines to his German parishioners: "Our country lost the war. The English, Americans and Russians won. Maybe they had much better equipment, larger armies, better leadership. In reality, it was an explicit material victory. They took the victory. However, among victors there is one nation that won another more beautiful victory, a victory of the soul, a victory of the heart and honesty, a victory of peace and Christian love. THEY ARE THE SERBS. We knew them earlier, some a little and some not at all. But we all knew what we did in their homeland. We killed hundreds of the Serbs who defended their country for one of our soldiers who represented the occupier -- the oppressor. And not only that, we looked favorably when others shot at Serbs from all sides; The Croats, the Italians, Albanians, Bulgarians and Hungarians. Yet we knew that among us in the prisoner of war camps were 5,000 Serbian officers, who earlier were the elite of the society and, who now resembled living skeletons, exhausted and spent from hunger. We knew that among the Serbs smoldered the belief 'He who does not revenge is not sanctified'." "We were truly afraid of the revenge by these Serbian martyrs. We already saw our children in canals, baked in town bakeries. We were terrified by horror that was coming. We were afraid that after our capitulation they would do what we did to them. We imagined murder, plunder, rape, demolition and destruction of our homes. However, what happened later in reality? When the barbed wires were torn down and 5,000 Serbian skeletons found themselves free in our midst, those skeletons caressed our children and spoke calmly with us. So, Serbs caressed the children of those who wrapped their homeland in black. Only now can we understand why our greatest poet, Goethe, studied the Serbian language. Only now can we comprehend why the last word for Bismark, on his deathbed, was -- 'SERBIA.' That kind of victory is more sublime than any material victory. It seems to me that only the Serbs could win such a victory, being brought up in their St. Sava's spirit and epic poetry, which our Goethe loved so much. This victory will live for centuries in the souls of us Germans. I want to dedicate my last clergyman's sermon to that victory and the Serbs who won it."

It was not just the 10th but also the Sremski volunteer battalion and what remained from the Belgrade gendarmerie that performed the counter attack on the railroad positions, and these were young men , boys mostly .... for example the Sremski Volunteer Battalion (SVB) was made of boys as young as 14-15 years old + even some women like Sofija Jovanović.... Most of the 10th , SVB and Gendarmerie was cut to pieces and destroyed in that battle.... in total there was around 16.000 people organized in to the Cobined Belegrade Defence Troops , only around 5.000 would survive until the end of the war

"I wanted Serbians as my allys, not my enemys"
The American president ordered the Serbian flag to be set on the white house after the war it was the first and only flag to ever wave from the roof of the White house beside the American flag
    The Japanese President said
"We always thought our soldiers were the bravest, but i think the Serbs deserve that title more than we do"

I cant explain with words how happy am I to know the fact that there is a band like Sabaton. They bring war stories fulled with heroic acts, last stands to something real. You can feel it so good that you are like in the battle. I would really like for you to consider to make a song about the Batlle of Shipka in the Russian-Turkish war 1877-1878. Our brave soldiers fought so hard that day that even when there was no ammunitions, soldiers started throwing rock and dead bodies only to stop the ottomans. Greetings to all serb brothers from Bulgaria

well we got those :D ua-cam.com/video/JIGWBOuAMl8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/NM9tKhPk5RU/v-deo.html . and by the way shipka its like a hero story, the hero christians vs the islam monsters i mean look at this a shipka the point of heroes 5500 bulgarians 500 russians 1 day of fight ."All the glory on the first day belongs to a handful of Orlovtsi (the Orlov regiment) and the Bulgarian companies, among which there were 500 people, brought only three days ago, recruits. A significant part of the heroes of Stara Zagora. The current volunteers are just young people, but worthy of their predecessors. "
According to Vasily Ivanovich Nemirovich-Danchenko, the first day of the battles of Shipka. 2 day + 1500 russians= 7500 vs 35000 the 3 day 11.08.1877 that day when the bulgarians and russians where surrounded, they codent even retreat. russian major Chilyayev told the russians and bulgarians=Brothers, our enemy has surrounded us on all sides,so there in no way of retreating. We will hold until our help comes,if this help does not come in time,we will all put our bones for the liberation of Bulgaria.14 attacks were repelled one after another the bulgarians that ran out of ammo and where throwing at the turks trees and rocks started to run out of them too, and then someone screamed=Grab the Bodies . so the bulgarians and russians started to throw bodies of there dead comrades at the turks even the turks dead bodies at them, but even bravery had a limit and they were close to being overruned and all killed. 200- cossack cavery came just in the right time + the turks advance stoped for 1 min sense they dident know how many reinforcements where coming and in that moment 1 bulgarian soldier shouted SHUMI MARICA at least 2000 bulgarians that know the song started to sing it and its like they grow wings and had to power to continue fighting(''It was as if there had been no fatigue,as if these people had not been fighting for three days on their posts!'...Shipka was saved.'') they killed all the turks that climbed shipka and its said that they where all heading to the turkish camp Sainovo to kill the enemy, the russian officers had to stop the bulgarians from going down in the turkush camp that was pretty much suicide :D . that was the day that 7500vs 35000 showed that christian heroes wins against islamic monsters :) не е български опълченци,не е и български войници,е български герои.
