Fun fact: my grandfather was conscripted in the italian army (Alpini regiment) for the invasion of Albania and then Greece. I never met him, he died before I was born. But trough my mom I was told that he sometimes shared stories about the war, but usually never talked about it and was an argument that in the family was known to better be avoided as they said he had been ruined by the experience “il giovanotto rovinato dalla guerra”. Everyone always told me that the worst stories were from the time he was made a POW in Athens after italy switched sides. The German army took him and sent him in a POW camp in west Germany to work in the railway system, he always said that he was one of the lucky ones “sometimes a potato fell off the train, so I could eat that day”
That is true. My grandpa fought in Albania and then he was in the resistance. But he always talked to me about the war and he was really good at describing the events. When the Italians capitulated, the Greeks (both the resistance and the population) tried their best to hide the Italian soldiers, as Germans were slaughtering them like cattle. They were hiding them in the mountains, waiting for getaway boats or masked them as family members (easy to do as we look really alike). Greek POWs in Italy were treated well, and Italian POW in Greece were treated well. After Italy's capitulation, both groups were sent to concentration camps where most of them perished.
Hi, great video as always!! I want to point out some things, many people will get the impression that the italians were not ready at all and had very much equipment shortages. Greek soldiers could eat only every 3 days. 70-75% of the soldiers were without RIFLES. Uniform shortages Boot shortages Low ammunition (by the time of 6 april, the german invasion. the army of epirus which is 180k men had only ammunition for 1 week). and the army of macedonia-thrace ( 65-67k men) had no anti-air no anti-tank no artillery (only mortars in THE FORTS). Pre-WW1 + WW1 era rifles. Pre-WW1 + WW1 artillery.
As a Greek Fan, I have to say that I've been to 3 of your shows here in Athens and you call us crazy every time. Thank you for honoring our heroic soldiers through this song, who died for the defence of our fatherland during the Greco-Italian War of 1940-1941! Mussolini - Who would've thought fighting a dug-in enemy would be this hard? Cadorna - uuuummmm... Mussolini - And losing this many to the weather? Who could've seen it coming? Enver Pasha - uuuuhhhhh...
I think its fair to say that the Nazis did not enjoy their time in Greece. There's something about having to deal with an utterly infuriated population that can turn commando and who know the terrain and can live off of the land. Fractious? Sure, if they can't stomp the crap out of a common threat they will clash with each other. But they all remember Leonidas and The 300.
Great episode. I'd love to see a special episode where you pair Coat of Arms with Sparta. It would be awesome to see comparisons between two different points in Greek history.
*Italy: Fucks up at the Greek front *French: "Greeks please from this point on is France, keep heading south" (From a flyer in south France after the Greek counterattack, mocking the Italians)
μας κανατε περιφανους , its a Greek translation for "you made us proud" as a shortened version of the events its very accurate and i had heard one of the old stories that says : the Italian air force tried to to bomb my hometown Volos and their pilots were so bad the bombs missed their marks and dealed a very small amount of damage
I had no idea my favorite band ever had a channel with the history from their songs, well hell I know what I’m doing for the next few hours. Also love from Chicago! Please come back someday!!!!
Imagine what would have happened if Mussolini actually worked along side his generals and allowed them the time to work out how to achieve the goals he set out. The Italians might have actually knocked greece out on their own. The Germans even said after they came in and delivered the final blow that the Italians had done most of the hard work. The Greeks were nearly out of ammunition for their artillery, and their lines were's shaky.
Imagine also what would happen if Germany came first and found an unwithered Greek Army. Maybe nothing would change, maybe they would have the same issues as Italians. Lots of scenarios so lets focus on what has actually happened

We Hellenes (Greeks) were always in the edge of civil war,( from ancient times Athenians vs Spartans, Macedonians vs Thessalians etc), maybe thats why we were so good at war and so many ideas, theories science etc developed in this antagonizing atmosphere. When I first heard the song, I heard: Coat of arms, spanners fly in the wind For the glory of hell ass Coat of arms, agreeing freedom or death For the king lionaidus

Uniform shortages
Boot shortages
Low ammunition (by the time of 6 april, the german invasion. the army of epirus which is 180k men had only ammunition for 1 week). and the army of macedonia-thrace ( 65-67k men) had no anti-air no anti-tank no artillery (only mortars in THE FORTS).
Pre-WW1 + WW1 era rifles.
Pre-WW1 + WW1 artillery.
Thanks for your contributions!
As a Greek Fan, I have to say that I've been to 3 of your shows here in Athens and you call us crazy every time. Thank you for honoring our heroic soldiers through this song, who died for the defence of our fatherland during the Greco-Italian War of 1940-1941! Today once again,October 28th, we celebrate and honor their victory! 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
Thank you so much for coming! It's our privilege to share night after night of heavy metal with you guys 🤘
@@SabatonHistory I can't believe you answered me, makes me even more excited! You are my favourite band I'll always be! Stay Metal and never leave your military history theme as band!
Hitler to mussolini: how is the conquest of Greece going?
Mussolini: the defence of Albania is going OK
Just here to confirm that Greek food is the absolute best. The food is actually what I look forward to the most, anytime I go back to visit the country.

14:46 I am a proud Greek and I singed along xD. Much love from Greece!!!
I love sabaton history I have learned more from it than secondary school history class

"I'm gonna let you go for now" all history teachers ever ending class early cuz they da best
Great episode. I'd love to see a special episode where you pair Coat of Arms with Sparta. It would be awesome to see comparisons between two different points in Greek history.
I remember all the stories my grandma and grandpa were telling me about the Germans and the Italians in Greece in ww2
Ah, Coat of Arms. I still listening to this all those years ago and loving it so much that I went and did a French subtitles for the official video.
*Italy: Fucks up at the Greek front
*French: "Greeks please from this point on is France, keep heading south" (From a flyer in south France after the Greek counterattack, mocking the Italians)
μας κανατε περιφανους , its a Greek translation for "you made us proud" as a shortened version of the events its very accurate and i had heard one of the old stories that says : the Italian air force tried to to bomb my hometown Volos and their pilots were so bad the bombs missed their marks and dealed a very small amount of damage
Iam proud i borned greek . Thank you for making this video
Thank YOU for watching it!
When I'll go to Greece I'll shout "Ochi!" all around the place.
We'll think you're a psychopath lmao
@@krypteion448 can't help it, this is the only Greek word I know :D :D

Interesting and informative excellent photography job making it easier for viewers to better understand what the orator was describing. Historians did a very good job presenting actual facts from fiction. Class A research project. Orator presented the documentary very well. Special thanks to the feuding people of Italy and Greece. Making this documentary possible!!!
We Hellenes (Greeks) were always in the edge of civil war,( from ancient times Athenians vs Spartans, Macedonians vs Thessalians etc), maybe thats why we were so good at war and so many ideas, theories science etc developed in this antagonizing atmosphere. One thing always united us. A common foreign enemy. Oh no buddy, I can mess with my fellow Greek, but you can't
excellent!
Every winter war is "The Worst In Centuries" from the Great Northern War to the Winter War
Go heroes of Hellas! also: go miss Piggy!
I just love you guys both. :) It was such an entertaining episode, from the first second to the last!
I can't wait for Sabaton to do some songs about Italy/Ancient Rome. There would be so much to tell
That would make an epic album topic
I'm 3rd generation Greek. I love this song . Thank you sabaton!!!!!
When I first heard the song, I heard:
Coat of arms, spanners fly in the wind
For the glory of hell ass
Coat of arms, agreeing freedom or death
For the king lionaidus
Lmfao
This is exactly how I imagine war justification in Hearts Of Iron. xD
"Give us strategic point or war. You have 3 hours."
"Give you wha-"

Growing up as an Australian Greek this story truly cements my observations that greeks are some the most stubborn people you will meet, for better or worse. In the case of Oxi day, I'm glad it was for the better
