Not possibly. It simply is. And his 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' bassline is right behind it at #2. It must be crazy having the top 2 greatest basslines of all time
I don't think it was this song he did on his back. What's Going On is too complicated to do, on one's back. Flying High in the Friendly Skies is my pick, for the on his back song.
Impeccable timing, he uses the pause to run to the next note. One of the best bass players ever, he hardly ever repeats his runs in any song. Got to love mono a Fender p bass. Natural talent.
@@grantywilson As Arthur Schnable the great Pianist said. The notes I play can be played by any pianist. It's the silence between the notes that makes the difference.
This is making me cry...beautiful. In 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown", Jack Ashford talks about how Marvin had gone to get James at a club, and wasn't in the best condition to play....but once they were back in the Snake Pit, James recorded this Bass track laying on his back in the studio floor...and from Jack's account, no one believed it...but James did it. Pure genius...
Miguel Camacho Jamerson was probably his favorite bassist but Marvin recorded with several other greats, including Bob Babbitt, Michael Henderson and Wilton Felder.
No argument regarding his entire recording career. For this track in particular he declined to record other bassists even if James Jamerson was unavailable or too drunk to be reliable, according to the versions available.
I feel I already replied to this comment. I meant that for this particular song the version I read is Marvin would not record it with any other player, even if Jamerson was totally smashed on alcohol and could hardly play at all; so they waited and did the required to ensure Jamerson could record this particular track. Legend has it he was so drunk he had to record it lying down on his back.
Jamerson is the number one bass player of all time. There is no number two. The countdown continues with number three. Thanks for the groves Mr. Jamerson. One day It will be my honor to see you play in Heaven.
@@sambac2053 Unfortunately Fams doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. He is a great bass player but on my list he is ranked 15th. It really is a shame he isn’t respected as a great bassist by more people. But the true lovers of music (like us) know who he is and know he is great one.
Observations: Superior songwriting, superior vocal ability, superior musicianship, and supreme confidence in said songwriting, vocal ability, and musicianship. Magic was made with this recording, and it was done with minimal takes. Simply amazing.
One of the reasons I love this is because the original recording is so "dense" it's hard to make out some of the parts. I also love being able to hear Marvin's different vocal tracks that he recorded together. Thanks you so much!
The singers of today need to have Marvins voice now than ever. Things getting hot again unfortunately. Let's do this shit again, before it's really too late. Peace people!
Perfect combination, Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr & James Jamerson on the greatest masterpiece of What's Going On. It can't get any better than that, it's THAT Legendary.
Yep... And Jamerson did his in 1 take on 1 track (no over-dub) under difficult circumstance. Marvin's got at least 3 tracks on this (he was only 1 dude) fantastic upload. Thanks, TheMastFravekator - super tasty.
He was drunk because the way Berry Gordon did him and the rest of Motown musical young geniuses suck all of their talent and stuff his bank account with all the money ,gave them peanuts in comparison
His style is so unique because when you don't hear the drums, it sounds like he's off the beat. But when you hear with the drums, it's like he's defining the whole groove of the song, and everyone is following him
The fluid spontaneity, while driving an intense rhythmic flow, IS beyond playing an instrument. Being a bass player isn't about playing a bass and he epitomizes the art of crafting a bass line full of life, where you could sit down and study the logic and intent of every note recorded here but what's going on in his head during the take is language in the moment. This track will always be a master class beyond just playing a bass instrument. So much about playing music is on display in this beautiful recording, through this beautiful song.
If you can find a stereo version of Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" with good separation, listen to the left and right channels individually, to obtain a better hearing of the bass on one channel, and the drums on the other.
I miss the extraordinarily talented and soulful artists that popularized music in the sixties.Todays "artists" have all the flavor and pop as a week old cup of coke.
Quite possibly the greatest bassline in the history of recorded music.
Agreed

Stevie wonder, I WAS MADE TO LOVE HER, check out that bassline.
And to think Jameson was laying flat on his back drunk when he laid this bassline in the studio!!!!! #GOAT
Ikr..... incredible!!! He played it better than people standing up!! Lol
Awesome
Heard that too, the bass was part of his body 👞
sounds like it. kinda rough transitions

Jamerson ... master of the silent pause between notes ... exceptional
Precisely. That sums it up.

If heaven and earth held a Battle of the Bands, these 2 guys win as a duo.
Bless their souls!
The greatest masterpiece Marvin Gaye ever created along with James Jamerson playing bass. Nothing comes close to this.
The first time I heard this song as 'just' vocals and bass was five minutes ago... I'm quite honestly blown away by it!
This is making me cry...beautiful. James was wanted by everyone because with him that's all you needed.
Listen to this and understand why Marvin would record with no one but James Jamerson. No mystery.
Miguel Camacho Jamerson was probably his favorite bassist but Marvin recorded with several other greats, including Bob Babbitt, Michael Henderson and Wilton Felder.

@@btx109 Bob Babbitt appears on this album, according to research.
One of the greatest musicians never to be appreciated to his capacity during his lifetime.
Jamerson's bass line is amazing!!!
Class is in session. R.I.P. Marvin Gaye and James Jamerson
Jamerson is the number one bass player of all time. There is no number two. The countdown continues with number three.

Number 2 is Family Man Barrett

The bass style defines the genre of the song. This is a masterpiece of Motown.🎸
Listen to this with headphones....mercy.............
Thank you for suggesting! Awesome!
I live Marvin Gaye. I love James Jamerson. This is perfect.
+1 to you Dave Jacoby for recognizing James Jamerson
😂😂😂😂😂
James Jamerson is the greatest bass player, nothing more I can say, I rest my case.

Good.
God.
I have actual tears in my eyes.
This 59 year old white boy loves this!
72 WB.....🎧🤓
No wonder Marvin could conjure a song like 'God is love'- God spoke directly to him through Jamerson's bass. ***tears***
The singers of today need to have Marvins voice now than ever. Things getting hot again unfortunately. Let's do this shit again, before it's really too late. Peace people!
As a student of the bass guitar, I find what this and did was mind blowing every time he played.

drunk out of his mind layin on the floor he recorded this
I don't know if I can believe that he was that drunk, I know if it was me, I couldn't play very accurately that inebreated
He was drunk because the way Berry Gordon did him and the rest of Motown musical young geniuses suck all of their talent and stuff his bank account with all the money ,gave them peanuts in comparison
Wow!!! Two talented musicians - so tough to replace these two Gentlemen.
Lots of people can try to emulate James's style but no can come up with the originality and feel in the creation of the lines. Pure master.
The warmest tone coming out of that Fender ever recorded ;-)
Look up the strings he used. Few have the guts to use them.
What had his strings?
La Bella 0760M DT'Bass 1954
Greasy, dirty and never changed LaBella flatwounds.
and sadly some really dispicable person or persons stole this bass from James home
Simply Beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw this performance on Netflix documentary The 70s last night. Put chills on my spine. A masterpiece fo sure!!
Marvin n James rest in peace gone but never forgotten thank you both for bringing love into our homes
Absolutely perfect on any and every angle.
Gorgeous. Two masters at the top of their game... even if one of them WAS literally blackout drunk on his back at the time.
can listen to this over and over
Yep,need a new repeat button.

Happy Birthday , James . The best bass player in the world .
A Masterpiece/Timeless/Artistry!!!!Have Mercy!!!!
Beautiful! Soul +Soul = a great song!
The best thing I've ever heard in my life. Wonderful.
Pure Greatness!
It’s like Marvin and James were sitting in a small cigarette smoke filled room and performing the song for the first time.
Magic is real. This is it.
And just remember - he did this with only his right index finger - the "Hook"
musical integrity something we don't see much of in todays "music"
So good it chokes me up!
Whats amaziig to me is that James wasn't showing off, He was just kicking ass and rtaking names..(simple)

chills down my spine indeed. Masters at work.
That shyt is SOOO SWEET!!
Brad...it is the greatest bassline in music history from the greatest album in music history.
I understand that James was playing this song laying on his back
legend says he was lying down because he was drunk at the time
@Fresh Prince have heard that story before about James playing laying on his back
2 G.O.A.T without a doubt
God gave him a great gifted

It was like his bass was an answering voice,
