I'll spend the entire game catching monsters and petting them. then go back to home base and pet some more. Pet all day every day, no need for exploration, just make patch quest "pet quest: the petting sim"
Wow, it's been quite a while since I last saw or played Patch Quest; really glad to see the new pet system, it looks to be really intresting, and Im sure it'll add a whole new side to strategy! Keep up the great work, and I'll be sure to get it once it releases on Steam!

Amazing addition! 5 is a good limit, but I feel like having a "pc" like pokemon would be good for those who want to catch them all. Though that would be tedious with the way capturing works and changing your current system is probably too much to ask.

Oh, and also I can see one problem that might arise here with some impatient players (like me). They'll just grab all the pets from the starting zone and that'll be it :( So I propose raising the maximum pet count to 6, but only let the player have 1 pet at the beginning, with items that expand the pet capacity by 1 in every second zone. This way it'll progress more naturally, I think. Oh, and then some endgame challenge that requires you to upgrade your pets, so as to incentify the ensuing grind for pins.

Here’s a thought. Let’s say you’ve got a pet that likes jungle patches. If you build more than one jungle patch in your base, maybe that could increase the number of “lives” your pet has per run. That way you can kind of decide whether you want to min-max your base for the benefit of a few of your pets, or balance it out for a wider variety.

you should make it that when the pet dies, they get parachuted back too, kinda confusing when your pet just disappears midbattle, or make the backpack robot say hes unconscious or something
If you're satistied with the new pet system and think it completed the empty space in core gameplay loop. That means it's time for adding more content to game & polishing it. My suggestion to you is, please don't get caught in "polishing the game before release" loop. But I think you're going to handle that as well. Looking forward to play when you release it! Keep up the good work!
This is a great addition. The only dowside it that it makes all runs a little more "samey" but that is okay. If you find one more mechanic that makes different playstyles and strategies viable/stronger or weaker through bonuses in different runs the game is perfect and long lasting. (I don't think the simplified stat system quiet achieved that.) But this is not necessary and it already has loads of replayability and i get that you don't want to clutter the game design. (I personally love systems that allow for differen synergies, like in hades, noita, or even boiled down in luck be a landlord.) Maybe one day :) (but again the game doesn't neeed that of course. But a tiny modifier for individual runes could go a long way. Or Maybe even a system to increase the difficulty like in hades. (Or maybe an assist mode like celest for casual players, specifically in 2 player mode) But ut's your game and your vision :) Good job!
i adore that this is becoming a little like pokemon x chao garden, it feels so right and satisfying, especially with the aesthetic this game has. So excited to buy the game
