  • Queens Of The Stone Age's Paper Machete comes with drummer Jon Theodore's best bits wrapped into one hit song.
00:02 Straightaway from the off, the drums lock in tight with the main guitar riff. It paves the way to a very Queensy hook, a sudden stop with all instruments, forming the song's backbone and creating a sense of unpredictability.
01:13 The simple snare hits are followed by a driven crash beat with powerful tom hits, injecting a sense of danger.
01:31 Despite mostly sticking to the meat and potatoes in his playing, the sauce comes in here. It's a drum pattern picked straight out of the Theodore playbook. The snare and kick drum break to a somewhat ragged but groovy beat. It creates a hook that keeps the listener engaged as the song returns to the main riff and a guitar solo. This part reminds me of the stuff he played on early The Mars Volta records.
I look up to Jon Theodore because his feel on the drums is quite unlike any other drummer's. It's a mixture of force and tight intricacy that sounds simple but is nigh-on impossible to emulate. On Paper Machete, he shows good taste in the subtle but powerful choices described above. This, combined with a track record of playing with the most innovative rock acts of the 2000s, makes him a true legend.
