That was intended so when Gohan gets to make a comeback it would be even more epic. Toriyama must have already planned his development into Ultimate Gohan beforehand. It was obvious that Vegeta's anger and disappointment stemmed from his love and admiration for Gohan like a surrogate son or nephew. If he didn't care, he'd have been completely indifferent.

He said he didn't want to fight anymore because everyone was putting their lives at risk rather than himself against cell. Not because Gohan was stronger than Goku during the cell saga. You're idiotic
Thats Piccolo 😅 Gohan used to call him "oji-san" or "big green uncle". Gohan was never as close to Vegeta as he was to Piccolo, but they still grew to share a deep respect for each other. If Vegeta didn't respect or care for Gohan, he'd likely be indifferent about Gohan's power level, or maybe even happy about Gohan's power being lower than his.
Imagine if Gohan trained with Vegeta. That’d be so cool. It’d be good character development for both of them. Vegeta obviously wants Gohan to be the best version of himself. Just like his fans do.
Trunks trained with vegeta in the time chamber. That didnt pan out well because vegeta just ignored trunks. I'd say train with goku and get metal lesson from vegeta.
I love the respect, Vegeta has always given Gohan. He has always held him to the highest standard, because he believed in his ability. No one has ever gotten as much praise from Vegeta as Gohan did.
Vegeta and Gohan is the definition of tough love. Believe it or not Vegeta always expects the best out of Gohan because he's seen it first hand how much potential Gohan has. If Goku didnt come back, Vegeta would make Gohan his next rival although he's already stronger than Gohan in the Buu Saga
Vegeta saw Gohan at level higher than he or Goku could have reached when he defeated Cell. He no doubt believed that the future of the Saiyan race could have been in good hands with Gohan
Vegeta’s speech stems from someone who legitimately cares about Gohan, and is both sad and frustrated to see what he’s become. When in reality he could’ve been the strongest in that room.
This to me is one of the greatest real shit moments. Gohan is indeed a pure hearted soul, beyond Goku and vegeta. This alone showed how it turned into ignorance. So unsure of his own power and that fighting to fight is all there is.. he didn’t learn a damn thing from what android 16 died for… He could protect everyone he cares for just by training and using the power that he Possesses inside.. as vegeta himself has said if gohan really wanted to he would be the strongest of them all. But it’s always wasted
Gohan really could have taken over the Dragonball legacy by defeating Buu with his father and Vegeta and we could have had a new era of Gohan as the main or maybe even his kids. Now Gohan just reflects most of our boring adulthoods wasted potential.
But remember that Gohan never loved fighting. Piccolo really understood him when he said that. There is no love for the thrill of battle. Gohan really was thrown into it at such a young age, he longed for the peace of an uneventful life
You can tell Vegeta was very passionate about Gohan, which is why he was so hard on him. He knows Gohan has immense potential, so to see him become so weak after all these years really pinched a nerve. It's like watching your favorite athlete who dominates often start playing like a rookie.
Uncle getes more disappointed than angry. I mean gohan was 5-6 years old and was throwing hands with him in the saiyan saga then in the freiza saga so vegeta has seen his potential first hand and he’s developed a level of high respect for gohan even if he never admits it it’s blatant cause of how he reacts in this and I think that’s good development
These scenes make Vegeta’s smile when he senses Gohan’s power during his fight with Goku in super more wholesome, he’s always been the one to point out the fact that Gohan has the highest potential of any warrior they know, hopefully he can help Gohan test his new form, I would love to see Ultra Ego Vegeta fight Gohan Beast
Vegeta is right, even when Gohan was facing Cell, instead of finishing him, he decided to watch him suffer to the point where it costed Trunks and Goku’s lives.
I loved how vegeta gave it to him. He was being a leader of his race and throughout Z and even super vegeta always shows some level of respect or expectations for gohan. Thats a fact I've really enjoyed about him. Vegeta and gohan really needed more one on one to fortify that. Makes vegeta feel more like a prince and gohan more like an actual respected warrior of the race.
"Power is for those who can be ruthless, not bleeding hearts who shrink from dealing the final blow. Survival of the fittest, plain and simple". ~Vegeta Well, in the perspective of the battlefield, Vegeta is truly wise.
Vegeta is literally around because the guy who has always been stronger than him didn't allow the finishing blow to be dealt to him. Most of Z's team is people Goku bested and did not "finish off." Also? Pretty much every villain in DBZ came to power because of him, and the fact that feeling big and bad was more important than "dealing the final blow." His son literally died in front of him by the enemy he toyed with until he was too much. Vegeta isn't wise. He's angsty and resentful, but proves, ultimately, that power without compassion does not make you a hero, nor successful.
@Barocrates Yeah, but Vegeta only got stronger through the years while Gohan got soft. Vegeta looks for new challenges (which is why he foolishly let Cell become perfect) but he rises to meet them. Moving on.
@@wilcee675 That's a really lame justification. The point is Vegeta literally did not practice his own advice, nor has his been successful using or not using his own advice. He's stronger and Gohan is weaker because of plot armor.
@@BigZach77 Vegeta's been more successful in Dragonball Super. Unlike Gohan, Vegeta trained with Whis. Gohan didn't even train after losing to base Frieza. That's not plot armor.
Vegeta’s right 100%. Gohan really let himself go. He was so far ahead of both Goku and Vegeta when he was just a kid that it took them 7 years to close the gap. Now he’s really struggling against Dabura, an opponent that Goku himself said was more or less equal to Cell, whom Gohan was almost effortlessly knocking around when he was 11. Now Vegeta is forced to sit and watch a fight that should be over before it even started. Add to that the fact he realized that Goku is still stronger and someone with even more potential than him has wasted it. Yeah, talk about frustrated lol.
Gohan was not effortlessly knocking Cell around as a preteen, least of all Perfect Cell. He survived because of teamwork, because Vegeta came in clutch, or are you forgetting that Cell toyed with everyone? Also, CHILD. LITERAL CHILD. Go look at the random 4th grader. CHILD. Against Perfect Cell. Gohan was in a rage and super saiyan out of sheer blind emotions, he was never winning, he was surviving and scraping by because the adults in his life all failed him. Literally, Gohan only ever fought Cell because Vegeta's ego let him catch 17, and Trunks was busy trying to stop that mess. Also, Vegeta cares about fighting. Gohan not so much, he feels trapped by his heritage and the people around him constantly choosing violence. Vegeta was never his prince, think back to his first memories and being attacked again and again and again by Vegeta's hand at earth and on Namek. So while Vegeta sees the half-breed Gohan as a member of his race (who again, Vegeta's the ONLY one in the group who knows anything about their racial culture), Gohan really has no attachment or allegiance to Vegeta beyond "oh hey, the guy who always lets the enemy get to his strongest so the rest of us have to clean up or we all die is yelling at me, and now he's lecturing me on not living up to the same Saiyan Pride that puts all of us in danger because of his crass stupidity". I honestly feel no shame here for Gohan. He lived his life and made his choices, which happened to be different from Vegeta and Goku. Big whoop. Acting like "letting himself go" when he's still able to fend of the vast majority of assailants is toxic. There was nothing wrong in pointing out that Krillin and Piccolo were left stuck because he wasn't up to snuff, what was wrong was berating him for not living the exact same path as the others. (Oh no, the abused and neglected child with complexes wants to stay away from fighting, but this is a fighting anime so lets all victim shame him... take a step back and listen to yourselves. I am very much aware this isn't real life, but you're treating it like it is so you might as well consider the social dilemmas and ethics as well as the war time strategems.)
Better yet, he could've trained and used his academic knowledge to experiment on and enhance his training during those seven years. A thought that should've occurred to Gohan considering his past encounters with powerful foes both on earth and beyond.
“Take a goood look at yourself…. You crumbled!” One of my favorite Vegeta tirades and he was actually right. Never understood the tanking of Gohan’s character development.
It's because Gohan being the guy who can solos the bad guys is contradictory to the narrative that everyone's strength becomes your own, and its not just you alone that wins the day.
And goku didn’t say shit at the end. Because vegeta was bang on. IMAGINE how badass gohan would have been if he did the year in time chamber with goku then vegeta?! Like the balance of positive reinforcement and ruthless savagery would have propelled him to a level unheard of
Vegeta: why not Gohan? Certainly you realize your son has the most latent ability of anyone we know Vegeta knows Gohan's potential better than anyone maybe even kakarot
I think his fight against Cell is why he is so angry in this scene. Also Gohan should have known better since he himself toyed with Cell after turning SSJ2 and it cost Goku his life.
Different scenario vegeta wants cell to transform because cell is still not on his full potential vegeta wants to prove that he can kill him at his strongest meanwhile gohan has every aspect of defeating dabura he is definitely outclassed by gohan ssj2 there's no reason to keep the fight any longer but he still gets away because gohan keeps toying with him
This is exactly what Gohan needed to hear, more or less. He assumed he still had the same strength as he did when he fought Cell but he spent a whole year training with his dad in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber(or Room of Spirit and Time). Gohan never grew a spine raised by his mother after Goku's death. Slacking off acting like he was a normal kid when he should've made time to train for any new threats to the Earth. He made the same mistakes when fighting Fat Buu and Super Buu. His overconfidence was his downfall.
Vegeta is only angry because he saw first hand Gohan's incredible potential against Cell. Watch when Cell returns as Super Perfect Cell and Gohan powers up as SSJ2 again. Vegeta's face shows shock and awe out of respect for Gohan's power at the time. That's why Vegeta is upset that Gohan's power dropped so much when his potential is limitless.
Everyone is like "Vegeta is such a good prince" That's not it. Vegeta saw Gohan be the strongest out of all of them when he was a _child._ Say what you want about Vegeta, but he respects strength, and he's just so pissed at Gohan for not being as amazing as he can be. If you work for something your whole life right, and then you see a child who is better than you, they make you look like an amateur basically. Then ten years later they're worse than when they were a kid. You'd be just as pissed off because you could have used that potential, you'd use it properly, and they just fucking waste it.
So much symbolism at the end when Vegeta was speaking to Gohan 1:11 1. When Vegeta pushes Gohan back and sets his feet, Vegeta then stands firm and "tall" but not in the pose of an aggressor but as a King when he makes his statement. 2. "Two of your friends lives were in the balance and you crumbled" Vegeta scoffs as he finishes this statement because "friendship" is still somewhat foreign to Vegeta at this point. We all know Vegeta was not raised like Goku and the others to have such compassion. Gohan, however, being from Earth and understanding friendship better than Vegeta ever could STILL didn't put his best foot forward to save those closest to him. 3. This whole scene is set by Goku literally turning his back to Gohan while still being at his side the entire time Vegeta goes off. The scene/picture is displaying that at this moment that Goku knows full well Vegeta is right and is not going to coddle his boy. The stakes are high and Gohan needs to get it together and stop roleplaying as a hero and be the warrior he's shown them that he can be. In my opinion The Saiyan Hierarchy and Values are in full display here, even if the characters themselves don't see it.
@@Ultimodestructico My point isn't that vegeta isn't correct. Remember even in the world of dbz, planet busters still make up less than 1% of the population. So to the majority of the dbz population and to people like you and me, hearing that someone who could easily destroy a planet (and that is an understatement) is still funny to hear.
@@Potent1al Because I need to make myself clearer. It is funny to me because outside the z fighters the other billion of the population as well as people like you and me, would be gobsmacked if someone who can destroy planets is considered weak, that is all. So in terms of my point being moot, it does not make sense since I am already aware my point is moot, I just found it amusing. Would be the equivalent of someone running at the speed of light and a mere human like me and you overhearing someone calling that person slow.
I think Vegeta is a tough love kind of person, he obviously wants Gohan to be the best warrior possible and it frustrates him to see Gohan denying himself his full potential.
Gohan takes these words to heart for an episode at most and then gets hit with the same sentence by piccolo in super and was like "Wow... I did it again didn't I?"
@MADISON MARSH We all get that. But still, she should've let him have the chance either way, even if he didn't like fighting. How can you be stronger as or than anybody if she don't give her sons any advantage to train on their free time?
This is a misconception I always see lol Gohan never EVER liked fighting. He ALWAYS gets drunk off power. EG Cell & Buu. Every time Gohan becomes a “Fighter” it only works when he’s doing so to protect people not cause he “Likes” it.
Apparently Vegeta is speaking facts about Gohan. If Gohan kept training for 7 years he never would've struggled against his fight against Debura and made quick work of him.
"2 of your friends lives where in the balance, and you crumbled", the moment he realised that the lecture wasn't just about pride and representing the sayain race, so much respect for vegeta, when it comes to the crunch, he always knows what needs to be done
Uncle Vegeta laying the verbal smackdown on Gohan's candy ass. Sad part is, he's right...also Vegeta despises weakness so it's not like he was going to keep his mouth shut lol.
This is why Gohan needed to train mentally under Roshi. The sad fact is Gohan grew up with martial arts when it was needed to fight and kill others than wanted to kill him and his planet. It was different from how Goku and Krillin were introduced to martial arts and fighting. Bettering yourself while having the power to use when necessary or protect yourself and the innocent. Gohan needed to mentally train with Roshi to find his love for martial arts and how it doesn’t always mean senseless violence. As 16 said, there are some words alone won’t do anything towards.
Vegeta: You go too easy on your opponent, always opting for mercy when you should be vicious. That is no way to win! Coming from the guy who deliberately refused to finish off Cell and let him get his perfect form...
@ytmndman Except Vegeta wasn’t showing Cell mercy; he didn’t want to waste time fighting the Androids and Cell plus he wanted to see what Perfect Cell could do. Vegeta was battle crazy, Gohan was weak.
Kakarot not even TRYING to stand up for his son. I actually like it. Kinda shows how Kakarot and Vegeta's personalities have almost convened into the same spot throughout the entire Z series. Vegeta's learned to stand up for his comrades as well as himself, while Kakarot has accepted that aggression is necessary and some opponents just have to be stopped at all costs.
He's not trying to defend him because he completely agrees with Vegeta lol, Chichi did Gohan dirty. I get wanting an education for your kid but she has to realize Gohan is half-saiyan, an alien race bred for war, she stunted his combat growth.
This is so true. It is a shame the Goku growth couldn't have kept going. Heck, even though I'd rather just watch the fun film with the better animation, there's no objection to Vegeta straight up murdering Ginyu in Tagoma's body. And if they could've just given Vegeta the win, he humilated Frieza so badly after everything. Also different characters go from Gohan knocking out a ton of guys to others ki blasting or just beating them up, Piccolo takes out the other strongest henchmen. GT also understood these things, it really is a shame they let most of super otherwise regress to basically pre-Buu arc in way too many aspects. Not limited too Gohan training again, Goku taking things more seriously, and Vegeta going from using a wizard to gain strength to just accepting it from his wife and fusing again, after his disgust for the potara earings was shown in the buu arc. That 1hr thing with those earings was an atrocious retcon but least the Broly film gave us Gogeta and even though Vegeta is annoyed he also gets they got Broly just seemingly growing stronger by the second and mind you a more refined frieza with "gold power" is also hanging around. It's just a shame they couldn't keep to the actual really solid development these characters would get from opposites to just beyond different approaches to things, walks of life, etc, and acceptance when these guys originally were trying to kill each other, Vegeta still holding the grudge that became a rematch...which Goku screwed him over by hiding SSj3...I wish the show could at least use buu saga development standards especially when they can present new villains that aren't so massively overpowered like Buu got.
I think this scene is supposed to be showing how Vegeta is consumed by desire for power and is frustrated by those who have it but don't use it--which makes him an easy target to bring out evil. On the other hand, he's saying what Gohan fans feel too. Hopefully the DB Super movie coming out this year will give him a little boost!

That was intended so when Gohan gets to make a comeback it would be even more epic. Toriyama must have already planned his development into Ultimate Gohan beforehand.
"Power is for those who can be ruthless, not bleeding hearts who shrink from dealing the final blow. Survival of the fittest, plain and simple". ~Vegeta
Well, in the perspective of the battlefield, Vegeta is truly wise.
Vegeta is literally around because the guy who has always been stronger than him didn't allow the finishing blow to be dealt to him.
Most of Z's team is people Goku bested and did not "finish off."
Also? Pretty much every villain in DBZ came to power because of him, and the fact that feeling big and bad was more important than "dealing the final blow." His son literally died in front of him by the enemy he toyed with until he was too much.
Vegeta isn't wise. He's angsty and resentful, but proves, ultimately, that power without compassion does not make you a hero, nor successful.

Vegeta saw Gohan be the strongest out of all of them when he was a _child._
Say what you want about Vegeta, but he respects strength, and he's just so pissed at Gohan for not being as amazing as he can be. If you work for something your whole life right, and then you see a child who is better than you, they make you look like an amateur basically. Then ten years later they're worse than when they were a kid. You'd be just as pissed off because you could have used that potential, you'd use it properly, and they just fucking waste it.
So much symbolism at the end when Vegeta was speaking to Gohan 1:11

This is just a fraction of frustration we feel, knowing Gohan is the strongest character, never reaching even a 10th of his potential.
blame akira toriyama. this new movie better make up for it
Man if vegeta was gohans father he would’ve been such a beast
I love how Vegeta had respect for Gohan! Vegeta has been pushing himself every single day and he assumed that the mighty Gohan that defeated Cell should be able to handle his own quite well but unfortunately he has nerfed himself.
