On the subject of Wonder Woman: If I recall correctly, she was designed with one woman serving as the basis for her personality, and the other was the actual physical model.
Their relationship also included some definite kink elements: It’s the reason why Wonder Woman’s original weakness was becoming completely powerless if anyone tied her up…
…also, Themiscyra as a Matriarchal paradise was a reflection of his belief in feminine dominance.
…that’s not a pop-psychology diagnosis, if I am recalling right, that was actually in his writings and notes.
Sooo, with all that said, the more modern depictions of Wonder Woman as a polyarmorous pansexual war goddess, are probably closer to what the original author actually would have wanted to depict, if he could have gotten away with more then the comics code and regressive societal morals of the time allowed.

Our daughter was bullied by a boy at her school. We discussed this with the principal. He refused to do anything about it. I told him that I'd spoken with a police officer friend of mine and he told me this: from the moment your child steps onto the school bus in the morning until the moment she steps off the school bus at the end of the school day, she is the responsibility of the school. Her safety is their responsibility. Her well being and health is their responsibility. Should she be injured or attacked by another student, it is the school's responsibility to protect her and to ensure that it doesn't happen again. If they fail to hold up to their responsibility, legal charges can be laid against them and all who should have been in charge and responsible.
From that statement on the principal of the school made sure she was never bullied again. Know your rights, people. You do have them.

    • @GretchZ
      @GretchZ Рік тому +12

Meanwhile my parents refused to believe that I was being tortured (I’ll spare you. Too dark) by a teacher, and when it was finally injured, I was just moved to another class.
Then, when bullies were enabled (and potentially encouraged) by most teachers in my next school on top of me being occupied of things that didn’t happen and I wasn’t in in the school for, they decided the best thing to do would be to put me in what I would call “day jail for bad kids”.
I was in that place for two years. They stopped even trying to teach normal things after a while, because none of the people in there were qualified to be teachers or therapists, but were supposed to do both.
They only let me leave when I started “fitting in”. The other kids my age were just horrible. I was let out because they had “institutionalised” me, prison style.
I’m not sure I’ll ever get over any of that, because this is not even close to describing what it was like and what happened.
These systems are still in place. People are allowed to do much of what happened to me without legal consequences, and schools districts have pretty good lawyers.
You know a police officer. That’s a big reason what you said worked.
Shorter version of what you said that would be just as effective: “You are responsible for her safety here, and my friend, who is a police officer with the city, agrees.”
Sorry for being so cynical, but the world is a shetplace.

Yes the world is a shite place, and all we can do is make a promise to ourselves not to be like the monsters who abuse us. My parents were both very physically abusive toward me, and my mother in particular reveled in being cruel. She would grab whatever was closest to use as a weapon on me and beat me for no reason other than she wanted to do it. As a child I had no way out, so I can sort of comprehend how difficult your life has been, but by age 8 I vowed to never be like them, and that if I ever had children they would be truly loved, each and every one. My life as an adult has turned out well. I hope for you that you can find true love and happiness.

      I’m doing alright, now.
They were just… bad at parenting. No advice they ever gave was any good.
They suck at things they would get angry for not knowing things because they never told us, and when we learned more about it than them, they would get salty.
My parents gave so little of a shit about how we actually grew up that I didn’t find out they were racist until I was 35.
They didn’t have the wherewithal to instil their (shet) values.
They just made people and treated them like pets.
The yelling, grabbing, spanking, picking fights, teasing…
“I’M NOT YELLING!” And less stupid gaslighting…
I could go on. There’s something different about that classroom. A year and a half. First year I was gaslit into thinking it was a positive experience. I think that teacher believed that.
The second year was pure sadism and every kind of abuse.
Real torture will break you in one way or another. Break you down, or just break part of you.
Everyone underestimates torture, because it’s not something you can understand, unless you’re someone who wants to do it.

On the “Sumerian PTSD” subject: Homer’s The Odyssey can be easily read as an exploration of the various heroes of the Trojan War dealing with PTSD in a variety of ways: Menaeleus is a shadow of hims former Spartan self, and spends his time wallowing around his estate, with his wife Helen (yes, THAT Helen), keeping everything functional by filling in for his kingly duties when needed and keeping his wild move swings at bay by medicating him with herbs mixed with wine.
Odysseus also goes into the Underworld and meets with those who both died during the war (Achilles) and those who died upon returning home (Agamemnon) and both basically serve as warnings about not being able to return home or leave the battlefield behind.
One of the reasons that Odysseus takes so long to return to his kingdom of Ithaca, is because he spends a good portion of the time either high on drugs or high on sorcery…basically, falling into diversions and distractions, seeking out self-destructive or dangerous behaviours (risking himself to hear the soothing songs of the Sirens come to mind), or behaving like he was still seeking glory on the field of battle, even when he should be quiet or sought a peaceful solution (the blinding of Polyphemus, the Cyclops, and then admitting to it despite initially hiding his identity, for the sake of claiming kleos, immortal glory). Basically, alternating between acting wildly erratic and being just plain too tired or despondent to get up in the morning (see: how he is described during his stay on Circe’s isle)…
Finally, because he wasn’t able to put the violence and bloodshed aside, he almost ignites a whole new civil war in Ithaca by killing off the suitors…in the end, only divine intervention from Athena, who comes down from Olympus to stop the fighting and basically telling everyone to forgive and put down their arms.
…which is also a callback to the Iliad, when Achilles is granted a new shield that depicts images of peaceful scenes to remind him that Athena is the Goddess of War…but War is supposed to eventually end in Peace, and the importance of transitioning back to a peaceful existence…and that war for the sake of war or claiming glory or treasure, are not ends in themselves.
…I may have once had to write an essay on this for university Classics…

About the autism one (I'm autistic), I've noticed that it's surprisingly easy for autistic people to detect other autistic people after meeting. My theory for this is that it's connected to our pattern recognition trait. Many autism traits such as masking are connected to our brains' unique way of processing patterns. Since masking comes a lot from our recognition of social patterns, that may be why it's so easy for us to find other autistic people, because we can tell when someone exhibits the patterns in our own behavior rather than the patterns in allistic (non-autistic) behavior.

I have the Minecraft: The Island book (in Polish tho), and i gotta say, It's REALLY GOOD. Not even just as a Minecraft thing. Unlike what most people describe MC as, this book has very little actual adventuring. The world in the book feels very empty, but intentionally so, the protagonist is and feels very alone. They're the only sapient being in the entire book, the book itself being their journal, and they just try to survive on the island while both accepting their new life and having mental breakdowns over remembering a normal, not square world, but not being able to remember *themselves* in that world.
I don't read a lot of books (fanfiction doesn't count) but that book is probably one of my favorite books ill ever read. Won't say much else bc this book is really worth reading on your own, but the entire vibe of the book is really cool. I tried to read the other MC books but none really got my attention as much as The Island.

The equivalent of boars growing tusks into their brains for humans would be: literally the version of masculinity we currently have. Men are more likely to die in basically every way except childbirth. Some of this is chemical, but a lot of it is from a mentality which men cultivate.
And both of these are driven by sexual selection. Most people consider a 'sexy' man someone who is strong and domineering. Even a little angry or violent.
And as a result we all die young, take pointless risks and kill each other in order to maintain that image.

This does bring up a nature vs nurture argument, especially when I know that statistics in my own country have shown that it's men who are percieved to "have a good sense of humor" who are most likely to get a partner. Is a "good sense of humor" genetic? Studies say maybe a little, but it's mostly cultural. Humor is completely subjective, after all.
Toxic masculinity has certainly been on the rise because of social media's constant exploitation of male lonliness, but I don't think that leads to violence being embedded in one's genetics.

      @Oshroth It's at least partially hormone-based.
Because of hormones, you'll lose your hair quicker and easier if you have high testosterone.
Also, women have traditionally been considered the only ones who can become pregnant. This means a connection to the children. And society took this to mean the woman to be in the home and not go out to provide as much. Meaning the man built the house and that means the woman is subservient and inferior to him for some reason.
It's Psychology, Sociology, Economy, Genetics, Hormones, sexism, wealth inequality, the glass/cotton ceiling, wars/fighting and its glory, hetero/cisnormativity, etc.

    • @LRM12o8
      @LRM12o8 Рік тому

@Oshroth I'm pretty sure that 90% of behavioral differences between men and women are instilled by society. There was a study that found that children in kindergarten will play with toys for both genders if the typical split between the girls' corner and the boys' corner is abolished and that the boys who played with dolls developed a higher level of social skills akin to girls, while girls who played with toy cars developed a better spatial imagination, similar to the typical level of spatial imagination in boys that age.
I believe that our hobbies, interests and dreams are informed by the idols, toys and stories we got as kids and adults don't realize how much they influence children based on their gender and -nudge- shove them in a particular direction. It's all nurture, safe for some minor differences in hormones (eg. excess testosterone can cause aggression) and neurological differences (eg. men being 3x as likely to have psychopathy), but I don't believe that our behavior in this complex society is directly influenced by genetic differences of the two genders. Our behavior is too far from natural for it to have some fundamental impact. Especially when it comes to hobbies and interests, those have nothing to do with survival in the wilderness!

I’m not a 3D modeler, but I am a 2D artist, and I think the big difference is the 3D art has far more prep time. Think about it, when you’re 2D drawing a character, once you have the design you just draw them in whatever pose you’re looking for. It’s very simple to just put the character to page. But with 3D animation, you have to build and rig EVERYTHING. You need to sculpt every individual object of a scene, and you have to code it to move how you want it to. 3D animation basically throws code into the mix, which is a separate skill altogether. It’s pretty easy to fuck up a 3D model, and each model has to be coded separately. So depending on how long the film is sorta determines which route is easier. You got a basic short film with multiple locations? It might just be best to hand draw. A longer film with similar locations all throughout, where you can reuse your assets? It’s probably worth that extra front time to save a lot on the back end of the project. It’s some pretty complicated math, determining which approach is best for your film. It’s probably most efficient to have your 2D animators make the full story board while the 3D animators make and rig the models, but it’s gonna take a big staff to do that. There are pros and cons to each approach, without even considering what your artist intent is.
But companies don’t care about that as much as they do abusing ununionized workers so 3D is just the default.

The blind people that gain sight not being able to recognize things they know by feel makes perfect sense to me: People who can see live watching what is effectively a 2-dimensional screen and we learn how to interpret the 3rd dimension... to varying levels of success (optical illusions anyone?). And perspective drawing is one of the harder things to learn/master in art.
Now try to imagine only experiencing everything in 3-D - "seeing" every side of the things around you at once - then suddenly experiencing a world where you can see *at most* half of whatever object... and other things that you also can only *at most* see half of can block out those other things. And on top of that not knowing about opacity/transparency and how one object could block another object - so you're stuck there knowing there's three things in a row, seeing one thing that blocks sight of other two things, and left trying to figure out how this one thing you see is suppose to represent the three things you know are there. Would be ridiculously disorienting.
I can come up with thousands of mental guesses of what that transition would be like, but I just can't put any of them into words because it's like comparing taste to colors - impossible to meaningfully express to others because there's no common point of reference of what that would be like. (I know there's some people with synesthesia that *can* see tastes or taste colors - please don't go off on tangent about that at me. I simply used taste/color thing as example of how average person simply isn't wired to even start understanding what the crossover might be like due to no common base of reference.)

"oh but you see I only do it to people who want bad spells" well thanks for the context that could never have been gleaned

30:25, UGHHHHH as an Autistic person, many people can have an interest in something and it doesn't have to bee a hyperfixation or special interest, it being a hyperfixation has to do nothing with the creator telling them to stop, and also if it is something like bad weird then it being a hyperfixation is no excuse, if anyone is being bad weird then they should stop.

Seriously, I'm getting really tired of overdiagnosis. Autism symptoms are common at lower levels, and I feel like these days people leap on calling literally everything autism.
Young child is a picky eater? Must be sensory issues
Someone needs a break from a loud room? Must be sensory overload
A person likes something and gets excited talking about it? Hyperfixation
A bit dense? Can't read social cues, must be autistic
And the real reason this bothers me so much, even besides it diminishing what autistic people have to deal with, is that now people are using it to excuse not developing yourself and instead form worse habits!
Don't teach that kid to eat food he doesn't like, that's cruel, let him just eat junk food!
No, I can't respect basic social conventions even after being told I'm being rude, I'm not masking!
      UGH
My brother is autistic, and he puts in so much effort to get by, so this shit just infuriates me

28:30 Fun fact, at one point in the Animorphs series, an ant crawls onto one of the panels of the morphing cube (the alien device that gave them their powers) & gets the ability to shapeshift as well.
It then somehow manages to use the morphing power, turns itself into a copy of the 1st person it touched (one of the main characters), & it immediately started screaming as I assume it had a massive existential crisis. The panicking ant-turned-human then proceeded to break said MC's arm, turn back to an ant, & was then summarily stepped on to put it out of its misery.

if you can shapeshift into something small but you have to keep all the weight (like a 150 lbs mouse) wouldn't that mean it would work in the opposite direction too? and be a huge whale but only 150 lbs?

33:18 tbf, he didn't destroy his dynasty. He was infertile.
His wife who was also his aunt did govern. That was how the incest was fine, uncle and niece, aunt nephew. Their family tree got smaller in the end. Almost all of his siblings died (deformities and shit).
He was the fittest for living and very obviously intellectually handicapped (didn't speak until age 4, walking also very late, afaik). Even his name was Carlos el hechizado. (The bewitched)
Imo, he wasn't responsible for anything.

15:30 if you say "i'm the least homophobic person you'll ever meet!" then you are not that person.
Nobody who isn't homophobic feels the need to clarify this, or claims to be the best at it. Everyone has internalized crap about gay people, and unlearning it isn't a contest, and it's never finished. Just be kind and keep learning!
I love the sentence "i need to inform you that homophobic people can have lesbian neighbors" 😅

i remember when i was a kid, i was heavily bullied, the main bully being the son of the intermediate teacher (the school i went to was a christian school that combined primary and intermediate, so from year 1 or 5 years old to year 8 or 13 years old), and no-one ever cared until i reacted physically, which was the only way i could protect myself, at which point i was punished

This resonates with me so hard. For the cherry on top, after fighting back K got sent multiple times to the school "psychologist", who proceeded to listen to my account and then blamed me for creating the situation, because my [undiagnosed at the time] autistic traits were too low of a hanging fruit for other students not to bully me. Good times.

@@azuzziken i see, similar situation for me i guess, i have aspergers, and although my parents knew i must have that or something like it even when i was 5, i didn't get diagnosed until pretty much right before NZ went into the covid lockdowns, and i have a feeling the signs i had even then had at least a part in getting people to bully me
