I love how Brennan is so good at portraying hateable characters that he made Siobhan use up all of her spell slots in what was literally just supposed to be her introductory scene.

Way late to this series, but I love Brennan's hard decline of Fig's adventure attempt. Emily's pushing her luck, and Brennan as DM is just like "No, fuck you, you're going to school. I'm in control here."
It's so clever as well! - its like four important things all wrapped up into one:
1 - Like you said, moving the plot forward, while also
2 - Showing that Gilear is actually smart and respectable by
3 - Following the logical conclusion of Fig trying to pass as his *own wife*
4 - Also just a plain great introduction to the character arcs by showing how things don't go to plan.

I've always had trouble paying attention to DnD games because they're so long and my short attention span couldn't handle paying attention for longer periods of time but this has been such a delight to watch. I saw Brennan do a collab with some other channel and he was so funny I decided to search him and ended up here. Always loved CollegeHumor so this was such an amazing watch!!

I grew up with a single mom, and my mom used to feed me amazing fresh meals as a kid while she ate scrambled eggs and ramen. I always asked her why she never ate what I did, and she just smiled and said, "I like what I'm eating better!". Luckily, I now get to take her to dinner regularly.
I like that Kristen isn't the "Christian purist" archetype, because that's plenty overdone, but instead she's the "lowkey, half-judgy half-sweet Christian" and that's just as funny lol

Perfect example of a DM keeping control. Fig tries to go off on a mini adventure, rolls really well - and still ends up where she needs to be for the detention of the soon-to-be party. So so good!!
And how it didn't seem like Riz would be doing anything detention-worthy soon, but then the girl he asked to go into the changing room to spy on Penelope and Sam tasks him to steal something from the principal's office so he gets in trouble anyway

Just pointing out how well foreshadowed the detention event was, and how well Brennan got everyone together like that:
Bill, the most important character in Fabian's life, told him to punch the strongest guy in school, so of course he would, and Gorgug happened to be the biggest one around. His father also bribed a gym teacher who was gonna welch on the deal, and Fabian with no subtlety would shout about it if he hadn't been gotten for the punch.
Gorgug, a fledgling barbarian with anger issues as a central character conflict was punched in the gut, so of course he's gonna rage, it's self-defense. Odds are if he wasn't punched he'dve been targeted by the Rog, who physically attacks multiple party members across the first day.
Adaine was told that stealing a book from a restricted section would be a huge benefit to her status and gain in wizardry, and with self-esteem issues like hers it was definitely in the cards to do. Then, she saw a restricted-section book completely unprotected, stole it, and promptly had a panic attack, a pre-established status condition.
Riz was extremely focused on finding Penny Luckstone again after she disappeared while babysitting him, so when he stumbled onto a clue of course he'd do whatever it takes. There is no solution to getting info from the girl's changing room that doesn't lead to detention.
Kristen wanted new perspectives and was riding the high concept of "religious girl reforms deliquents" straight into hell, so she joined willingly.
Fig is an agent of chaos and was literally never going to be anywhere else, except maybe jail.
Brennan set up situations perfectly tailored to get the players into detention (except Fig, who is the situation), without compromising player choice at all. It's a great stroke of DMing and is really subtle for how skilled it is.

Well they adopted a son because they probably couldn’t have they’re own and they are burying the fact that they don’t like that he is different through smiles and songs evidenced by the fact that when they rebuilt his bed they rebuilt it as the same small bed he inevitably will break again, its a metaphor for the fact that they keep trying to shove him into the space of where the child they could never have fits instead of adapting themselves too him being different.
Dependswhosasking 33 doesn’t he break the bed though because he just gets mad while he sleeps? Also they probably do all they can to make his bed the biggest they really can. Overall I thought they were 10/10 parents

I learned more about Dming from Dimension 20 instead of Critical Role.
@@wh3nderson95 Not disagreeing with you, but don't forget Critical Role is performed live, whereas dimension 20 have post-production. As such, Critical Role is more realistic to actual DMing. However, Brennan is still a master at DMing.
If I were to be a DM, I'd want to be like Brennan; improvising my campaign as it goes along.
I love Matt's work on Critical Role...but lately he's been used as how NOT to behave like a DM

@@wh3nderson95 From what I've heard in some videos, there are people are who fear they aren't good enough to be a DM because they don't have good enough voice talent or their campaigns don't seem as engaging as Matt's.
But over the past few years, I've come across DM's who may not be as famous as him but they make up for it with their spontaneous personalities. That is the type of Dungeon Master I aspire to be, if I so choose to take up such a role

I’ve seen the shorts pop up for months and the clips pop up for years. I’m finally realizing why Brennan said that he both loved Emily but also said she was trying to kill him. She’s very good at derailing campaigns in total logical ways and Brennan is an ultimate rule of cool master.

The idea that Gilear said unkind things when Fig's horns came in is hard to imagine. I can't remember any time he's overtly unkind in an episode other than the "demon" outburst in this one.
I think he had a moment of weaknes once - and he hurt Fig. That make him realise that he does not wanna loose her - and he tried to be better.
The knowledge that this beautiful child that you raised and took care of under the assumption that they are your flesh and blood just to learn the lady you wanted to have a family with cheated on you and that the child is someone else's can hurt in deep scarring ways
I don't doubt he said some stuff that he regretted immediately once he processed what he said
Don't doubt he hated himself cause it's clear that no matter what that's still his daughter that he adores and did his best to be there for
Looking back at his introduction now it makes me feel like a lot of his self hatred/lack of self esteem comes from that moment, and he’s so pathetic because he can’t forgive himself.
@emmakane6848 seeing Gilear and Fig's relationship develop and change over the course of the show has been a real treat. Had me in tears at some points.

The scene with Riz's mom and the cereal hit real hard. When she did the water thing, I didn't even care that that's normally gross. I just saw my mom and the effort she put into making me not feel like we were poor. Shoutout moms.

Compared to some battle hammers, and with the help of some magic, carrying a glass sphere of 1 ft radius doesn't sound too impractical as long as it's useful.

The little scene between Fig and Doreen at 1:16:00 is genuinely so amazing, incredible improv acting by both, really blew me away with the spontaneity of it and it feels so in character for both.

One underrated thing that I genuinely appreciate is that, contrary to the majority of pop culture, Brennan portrays a very traditionally masculine character like Bill Seacaster that actually shows a great deal of affection and love towards his son

Technically Fabian got detention along with Gorgug for fighting in the hallway. Brennan most llkely forgot with all the tomfoolery and asinine fuckery and retconned it as getting detention for calling Daybreak out for taking a bribe.
