@steg140 It could definately be the ground cable! The first thing to check, whensomething is acting up with electrics. I know this is an engine problem, but The ecu, lambda, other sensors all depend on stable current. Clean it up, and maybe connect an extra from the gearbox to the chassis.
@testacorsa150 sadly no, because I am not good at fixing things like this, I did not even take a look at it, I was just thanking you for your answer! I will ask a friend of mine to take a look at it as soon as possible, and investigate the problem as you suggested
Hey word of advise to you all out there....NEVER EVER rev up an engine cold after just starting it thats if u value your car...just saying...look at this guys temp guage..
Jonny Vravo It’s not THAT bad, it’s worse when people drive away (hard) instantly after starting it up. It gives the engine more stress than revving in neutral.
I could use some help/pointers. 96 318i. 94k miles, 5spd manual. Car was running fine but 2 weeks ago the plastic water outlet failed on the back of the engine. All coolant leaked out as the large nipple broke off. A major pita to replace but I did it. At the same time I was thinking the similar water outlet on the driver side of the block could be just as bad. So i bought that as well and took the upper intake manifold off and replaced that as well. Changed most hoses too, incl. the ones to the injector as they were in bad shape. After that I noticed oil leak at cyl # 2 so I changed the valve cover gasket. As I was putting back the throttle body, I noticed there was a lot of oil smudge deposit around the butterfly valves, so I cleaned the butterflies and surroundings with kerosin (I had no carb cleaner left) It removed the nasty oil deposits and the valves seem to open and close a little better. No more sticky feel. I then put everything back and now I have a rough idle. It never stalled yet, but its rough. Like its too low, as if I tap the accelerator pedal a little, it smooths out. I drove the car today about 30-40 miles. It did feel slightly better after driving it but once cooled down, its really crap again. It hovers around the 700rpm range but rough, shakes the engine. Here is what I did so far as an attempt to fix it. I put 4 new NGK spark plug on it. I removed the idle control valve and cleaned it. It was not really dirty, but cleaned it anyway. The valve was turning freely and the whole valve seems ok. I also sprayed a lot of intake/throttle cleaner into the throttle body. I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor with the MAF Cleaner as well. No changes whatsoever. Once its revved, the car seems to be running perfectly fine, no hesitation, no vibration, smooth, power seems to be all there, no hard starting, no stalling. I did around 70mph the fastest and it was fine at that speed as well. No other issues but the idle being rough. Its almost like when you have a large V8 with a lumpy idle. Engine shaking, etc. Also, no check engine light, so I can't try and read codes. I tried spraying carb cleaner around the intake manifold, throttle body to see if the idle gets rougher or stalling happens but nothing. Also as the engine gets warmer, it gets slightly better. Still very bad, but a tad smoother. Its like 1 being stalling 5 being perfect, it gets from #2 to #3 and if you drive it a lot, it gets #4 but never smooth like it was before I torn everything down. I'm pretty sure I did something during assembly. It does not seem it just happen to go bad. Right before I started working on it 4 days ago, I pulled into a garage and smooth idle, etc. I ran it only for 40-50 sec as it had no coolant, but car had butter smooth idle. I ordered an O2 sensor, as I was going to change that anyway. I used BMW parts and NGK spark plugs. I appreciate any and all help as I'm a bit lost at the moment.
I don't know If you have fixed your idle yet, but 9/10 times its the ICV that causes that. Especially if it is only when you turn on things such as headlights and aircon. You can replace it, or clean it with ICV cleaner spray. ICV should be located under the upper intake manifold/plenum. Hope this helps.
@Hanybeso MAF with electronics cleaner, you can clean also the cover with Anti rust. i have only one O2 sensor, but i know that some cars has more, better send it to some electrician and he'll tell you, O2 sensor from 50-60 euros
same problem on opel astra g 16v, injection cleaning fluid stabilized it but, still drops 1 millimeter every few seconds, one of spark plugs is black from carbon residues
I have a 318i e36 and it does not keep the idle stable expecially when using electical stuff that absorb energy, what the hell could it be??? I wish I could have such an idle
@steg140 leave the electrical thingy as the last thing to consider, try to clean the ICV and MAF, there are a lot of DIY, google it. if it wouldn't help then yeah, might be an electrical issue
@waseemo86 I brought it in a BMW service center and they ran a diagnostic test and they said to me it was all perfect, but I doubt it or che car would not have this problem..could it be a ground cable problem???? thanks for the answer!!
myne is 40 mpg in the city and its 4cylinders 1.9L idk and there is no check engine light. no smoke and just replaced a fuel filter becouse a mechanic told me that could be the prob and also did the tune up maybe spark plug wires and o2 sensor ?
@Hanybeso Hi, i recommend a computer diagnosis, its very cheap.. (i paid about 5-6 Euros), but a failing O2 sensor usually causes a Grey to Dark black smoke , besides fuel consumption increases (10 is the minimum) and you can feel that there is no power, its like the car is dead, engine is very weak and it idles really rough. you can clean the MAF , easy job, in google you will find lots of articles.
Can anyone help,when driving my rev's seem high,I have a BMW 318IS and my rev's are on 3 doing 65mph and over 3 doing 70mph which does not seem right,I have replaced the MAF as had idle problems and starting problems,I have no lights on my dash to indicate any problems,when starting the car just about starts and sometimes stalls.once started it will start everytime no probs.Any idea's?

I have similar problem, did you find the solution?

@ZioFlash74 anytime, it should be one of the reasons i mentioned. easy to DIY. good luck
that's cool i'm actually looking at a ICV problem on my car right now. Problem best not to push your RPMs so high without moving as well.

@neo24gr well, black or dark smoke from the exhaust and a rough idle
same problem on opel astra g 16v, injection cleaning fluid stabilized it but, still drops 1 millimeter every few seconds, one of spark plugs is black from carbon residues

@steg140 you better do computer diagnosis, might be oxygen sensor

I hafe this problem whit my car (the same). Thank you for the tipp.
@neo24gr have your ECU ( computer ) checked... it might be the O2 sensor or the MAF sensor.
@neo24gr then i really don't know man, maybe your ECU chip was changed, if its the original so i really don't know what might be the problem
@testacorsa150 thank you!
como se ve se o carro tem esse problemas??sem ir a maquina??
thanks, it was for the video only, i never do that
@steg140 You´re welcome did you get it fixed?
@waseemo86 I brought it in a BMW service center and they ran a diagnostic test and they said to me it was all perfect, but I doubt it or che car would not have this problem..could it be a ground cable problem???? thanks for the answer!!
maybe faulty o2 sensor? i am not sure
@driverontheroad1 cold and warm
myne is 40 mpg in the city and its 4cylinders 1.9L idk and there is no check engine light. no smoke and just replaced a fuel filter becouse a mechanic told me that could be the prob and also did the tune up maybe spark plug wires and o2 sensor ?
hey, can you post a video that is from after the repairs...

Tony Evans same! Did you ever get it fixed?
thanks man I'll check it out! ;)
I actually did but didn't help, it was the O2 sensor
@suppahlikillah LOL, posted on the wrong video :P
crazy you!
