    sorry about the morose thumbnail, I forgot to pose for the thumbnail at the end of the video but I DID sit staring morosely into space for about 30 seconds before turning off the camera, so I just took a screenshot of that and went with it, lol

    I liked what Hannah said at the end about not denying yourself and knowing the difference between a little indulgence and overindulgence. It reminds me of that piece of rhetoric to villainize poor people for having cell phones, or buying brunch once in a while... It's not like abstaining from everything fun or pleasant will give you a second income.

    At the time of my life when I was literally homeless and couch surfing I bought myself a beautiful hand made Art Deco style necklace at a local arts festival. It was around the price of that shirt You bought. I owned zero jewelry like accessories. At the time 50$ was not going to be enough to get me into an apartment. I couldn’t get one until I was employed and employment would be the vast bulk of money to become not homeless. So I bought myself this one beautiful thing and it made me feel exceptionally human and it has survived many many “reckonings” in the last three years. No matter how desolate a person is, a little treat can go a long way toward surviving a loss.

    I think your statement on budgeting was very well said. A couple of years ago, I lived on the opposite spectrum of spending where I really wrestled with guilt around "frivolous shopping" and was very restrictive with myself. After allowing myself to be more kind and open about what I chose to purchase, I've found that finding a middle path is important. There's no use allowing yourself to be miserable because of a needless over or under spending when there's room to find a balance. Even though over spending has never been my issue, your overall philosophy on your relationship with purchases has really resonated with me! Hope you are well :)

    The idea that people who are going through financial struggles don’t deserve nice and good and beautiful things is inherently a classist mindset. If it is something that you have budgeted for and you believe it will help you, whether helping is mentally (ie; a new lipstick helps you feel better about the way you look on a Zoom call) or physically (ie; buying the food that makes you feel the best that isn’t always the least expensive option) - Do It. You have the exact right idea. Black Lives Matter 🖤

    I subscribed to your channel during quarantine after following a few low buy no buy practicing youtubers. I really like how thoughtfully and intentionally you discuss your life which for me is almost always relevant. I really appreciated how quickly you addressed the most recent police murders of Black folks and personally addressed your experience of how you wanted to respond to this crisis and how you intended to begin that journey. And lastly I loved finding out you were a fellow sewist when you discussed transitioning out of your other business. I am on a financial journey as well. I am really glad you are feeling optimisitc. I am too on many fronts. I appreciate this space you have created and look forward to seeing what you are upto next time love. Be well.

      Exactly, this ! :D
      My mom use to shave her legs in her 20s to 40s because she had gotten a safety razor as a gift and the blades were so cheap that she could afford them even though she had a very tight budget.
      She's passed it on to me (it's now a 40 year old vintage piece of personal care haha) and it's still in working condition should I ever want to shave my legs ^^

      Agreed! A safety razor was hands-down the best beauty-related purchase I've made in years. The brass razor I purchased is aesthetically pleasing and only cost $22, including 3 replacement blades. Ten months later, I am still using the same blade with consistent use because if you rinse and dry the blade afterwards, they stay sharp for a very long time. Plus, a pack of five replacement blades only costs $2 and blades are recyclable. I had put off this purchase because I was terrified that I would cut myself to ribbons and it does require more attention while shaving to prevent nicks, but completely worth it!

    SUPER LONG COMMENT ALERT! For me, Nuuly is relevant because *most days* I am back in the office. And I save a ton of money keeping a tight, capsule, mostly black and neutral wardrobe, and then using Nuuly for dresses, tops, and the kinds of pants that feel on trend, especially in the summer. I often talk myself out of Nordstrom-level or higher purchases because of Nuuly (for example, during their fairly extreme clearance sale, I've gotten more black pants, navy pants, a grey cardigan and a tan cardigan, whereas in the past it would have been three times that much trying to update my spring work wardrobe to be "presentable'). And I've gotten better at knowing the kinds of things I can get away with wearing multiple times in the month so that my rentals have more value. That said, I feel like we are back in the office a bit early (although I think most lawyers in St. Louis will be next week), and my profession is one where we are semi-essential, where there is a hard core (trending misogynist) view that one needs to be in the office to do the job, and where female attorneys (less so slightly now that I am a partner) are SUPER judged on their wardrobe. It's also one where I need to put the bulk of my work wardrobe budget into suits. I've tried a couple of other services and eh. The clothes aren't SO fashion and also aren't so spendy to justify it (and also more expensive than Nuuly, which is confusing). I like Nuuly, because it helps me look as if I put some effort into my outfits, without having to own and buy clothes that are so on trend for each season. And frankly, it saves me from silly purchases of tops and dresses that I wear a few times and then think look dated or silly or too much to wear for that 4 times in spring/summer. Which is huge. I had it paused when we were in shelter, and now have renewed it. I think, particularly in the red states in the midwest and south, there are a lot of women like me who are returned (by what feels like force) to a false sense of normalcy way early (and yes, that is a little irritation in my voice). So I think for a lot of us, it is relevant, particularly as a cost control measure. But since I've been using Nuuly since 2019, it's not something about which I personally need a review, nor do I think you should make any videos that aren't in alignment with your current views (but would I enjoy one? yes). And maybe other women like me do? I agree, it feels kind of irrelevant emotionally during these times. But practically, it's something I've had to consider.

    While the specifics were quite different than yrs, I went through a parallel thought process last week. I have stretched ears, and have for some time. I'm also the kind of person who invests in one nice pair of gauges and wears them until I either size up or lose one to the void. Now, I have had teardrop shaped gauges for several months, and I'm not sure if it was the sharper-than-normal point at the top or the type of wood they were made of, but they were giving me a reaction. So I begrudgingly switched back to the plain surgical steel tunnels I had initially used as part of the stretching process. Boo. They are not my brand, that's for sure. I in no way wish to embody Hot Topic. So, although they weren't necessary, I went ahead and bought myself two moderately priced options [granted, I've literally dropped over 100 on a labradorite pair in the past so maybe that's not saying much]. Either way, I don't regret splashing out, regardless of these turbulent times, because sometimes you just want to feel good about the way you present yourself, no shame in that.

      Fellow girl with oversized earlobes!! I'm kind of the same way, in terms of only buying new jewelry when absolutely necessary, but... It does feel nice to have variety! And nevermind actually NEEDING higher quality pieces. My skin reacts to steel, glass & some stones are too heavy & fall out, so I have to be a bit picky. I'm currently wearing Crocodile Wood tunnels with some hoop earrings through them. 😁

    • @eikawithac
      @eikawithac 4 роки тому

      I've been told that teardrop shaped earrings should only be worn for limited amounts of time - for some people only for a few hours at a go - because the shape does create pressure points on your earlobe that can irritate. So that might have been the issue? But who knows, ears can also just be so weird and picky sometimes, lol.
      I have several pairs of earrings in my size but find myself wearing the same gray cat-eye glass plugs almost every day because the simplicity & comfort just works for me. Reminding myself that adding a new pair will just result in everything besides my gray ones getting even LESS wear-time, has stopped me from clicking the "check out" button more times than I can count!

    • @sn00chie33
      @sn00chie33 4 роки тому

      @@ZijnShayatanica I'm not gonna lie, I'm excited to have two different vibes to choose from! One is brass with abalone inlay and the other is just wood. They're both tunnels so hopefully they'll be light enough to stick around for awhile. What size are you?

    • @sn00chie33
      @sn00chie33 4 роки тому

      @@eikawithac I absolutely concur that it was the shape. I could literally feel micro tears forming in my ears, and they were behaving like freshly stretched, swollen lobes for about a week after I took them out. I'm just counting my blessings that I didn't get a blowout, but I've had them stretching for at least 7 years so that probably has something to do with it. Once you realize that not all gauges will universally work for you, it definitely makes you more apprehensive about buying whatever looks shiny n pretty in the future lol. 😅

    These videos feel so much like a conversation with one of my lovely, rigorously intellectual, real-life friends. So here's my contribution to "our" conversation today, dear Hannah: I love the intensity of a short fringe/bold brow combo and I think it suits you fabulously - I used to paint my brows almost-black when I had a silver pixie crop and I adored the graphic-ness of the look; I quit shaving last autumn and feel like I would never go back, though the lush feeling of silky-smooth legs might be something I end up craving, but it's taken me around half a year to stop being slightly repulsed by my own hairy legs - isn't that striking? I delighted in my hirsute hippie pits almost immediately though - maybe the French in me; speaking of French, I love a note in How To Be Parisian (a book in English by four Parisian women) about the chicness of a black bra under a white top resembling two crotchets or quavers - since reading that, I default to black bras on the rare occasions I wear white, and revel in my Parisienne oats.
    Thank you for continuing to upload here. There's something so generous about the spirit in which your content is created and I can never adequately explain the nourishment I gain from it. Oh my giddy Aunt HLP! I posted your banner on my facebook and a lot of people love it and are bidding on it AND it is officially above my budget at the time I watch this (in light of my other donations largely to the NAACP Legal Defense fund (Thurgood Marshall forever), but also to a lot of smaller local organizations), and part of me is definitely sad because I wanted to hang it in my corporate lawyers office (zero people would be surprised) but most of me is thrilled because it is such a stunning piece and deserves a huge auction price. The video of you making it is absolutely one of my favorites. For me, it recalls a lot of memories of helping make a quilt for the very first AIDS quilt project. It is a bright moment for me to hold onto during days where the world is all too cruel.

    Heads up, Flamingo razors are the WORST. I have never cut myself as much as I did using it. And the razor burn was horrible

    Hmmmm Hannah would you be an earth bender or an air bender? I can't decide XD. Yes these are the important questions.

      when I first watched Avatar I was working as a nanny, and my kids decided amongst themselves (there were four of them) that I would be a water bender, I guess I always just assumed that they knew best! But oooh I'd love to live in one of those air temples.

      @@HannahLouisePoston ooohh hmmm I think the grungy earthy tones you gravitate towards in makeup made me think earthbender, but I do think your vibe is very airbender. When I was a kid watching Avatar, I thought Toph was so cool so I wanted to be an earthbender, but I definitely belong in the water tribe. Imagine full intricate makeup looks for each of the tribes *goes off to search the youtubez*
