The Historical Implications of Sabrina Carpenter’s Bangs

- My thoughts on how the early 2020s have been defined by the popularity of the curtain bang, and how one pop star has contributed to, and benefitted from this popularity :))
This is my second video, but the goal of the channel will be talking about:
👢fashion history & vintage fashion
💇🏼♀️hair history
🔄the trend cycle
🛍️overconsumption
👩🏼💻and the way we talk about all of those things online (discourse!!!)

Third video in the works! Thanks so much!

It’s actually wild going through the timeline to realize just how fast her rise to main pop girly was! Like she tried for so long and then boom…immediate icon. We have no choice but to clap and cheer
It was so interesting how quickly in the mainstream she went from "who is Sabrina carpenter" to "Sabrina carpenter is everywhere". Like, the average person maybe knew feather before Coachella, and then within 2 weeks you couldn't escape Espresso. I think basically every sabrina fan had a bit of whiplash
She actually does have a hair product commercial for Redken's Acidic Bonding Concentrate saying she knows a thing or two about a great bang and that everyone deserves a great bang
@@NessaVanVanessa omg YES i forgot abt this dang i would’ve included the clip but also idk if it would be fair use for copyright? And at this point Im scared to ask🫡🫨
the female gaze is alive and well and sabrina is looking right at it and giving it a wink, i promise
@@kyaw9518 while I think it’s fun to talk about what women desire aesthetically (pop culture’s understanding of the female gaze) a real female gaze cannot exist bc the concept of male gaze (by its official/ academic definition) is dependent upon patriarchy & men holding the dominant position in media. I do love that Sabrina can represent what women see as beautiful & that her visual is not reliant on male approval; I just want to clear up why I said the female gaze doesn’t exist. (For more reading/sources: Laura Mulvey’s 1975 essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, but also, the wikipedia page on make gaze lololol)
This was a banger
I think the bang timeline is important, because she was seen as Taylor Swift to people who didn’t know her with the bang across, once she had the curtain bangs with the vintage aesthetic helped separate her as another blonde icon. Once she broke out more the curtain bangs were already fully formed. The across bang was a thing of the past. Side bang is post Shawn Mendes
Whenever the side bang comes back, everybody loves the side bang girly who has it first. Now the question is, am I too old to add a side bang if even tho im a 26 yr old mom and not a popstar? Time will tell
@@amandaleebee98 ur not too old don’t be silly
Lest we forget, Taylor Swift had a straight across bang and went side bang for 1989 and reputation before going curly during folklore/evermore and returning to form with the straight across bang now. It would not shock me if, as Sabrina has gotten to know Taylor, that might have been a part of bts conversations they had about image rebrands.
"the early 2020s are almost over" felt like a cannonball to the face also this is absolutely fascinating subscribed
The fact that you also have cute bangs isn't lost on me. ❣
Investigative journalism and scientific inquiry were invented when this video dropped!
@@SeafoamDesires confirmed!!
this is absolutely amazing and I want to keep hearing about whatever you want to overanalyse until the day that I die thank you so much for your service
Yep this is exactly the type of content I’ve been waiting for. Keep it coming, thank you for this analysis and commentary on such important connections in our timeline
@@sarahlampz this is so kind! This is my second video & Im still getting a handle on filming scripting editing so I appreciate this!!
@ you’re doing great! Personally shining through over everything which is of course the most important! Make whatever silly connections and commentaries on pop and fashion you want, I’ll eat it up! :)
I’m curious how Sabrina carpenter’s style will develop as she goes through eras as a pop star
@@Vouloircestpouvoir7697 the gag is i dont rlly listen to her music that much im just a fan of her vibe and i will continue to be
mama i dont care about hair but you are hilarious
This, this is what a perfect UA-cam video looks like, bit informative, very funny, bit sassy, very warm and kind. I had my best breakfast in weeks THANK YOU ❤
@@Notherj omg this is such a sweet comment💞it’s my second vid so its nowhere near perfect yet but I’m glad you’re still enjoying it :)) new vid next week if you haven’t subscribed yet!!
sooo glad this video popped up in the algo! i have also deeply mentally over analyzed sabrina carpenter's bangs. very thankful this exists!!
The sheer absurdity of this video title the pacing the editing the overanalysis Ohmygod I love this
@@verballyconstipated omg yay love to hear it. Some people def hate this type of content but it’s what I like so I assume some others have to right?! Xoxo
Just finished watching all of your videos! I can't believe you are a new youtuber. You are so well spoken, and I love that you get right to proving your point. You are clearly a natural. Can't wait to see more content from you!
@@mayalioth603 THANK YOU AHHH
truly the journalism we need but also i cannot for the life of me agree that almost any of those are side bangs IM SORRY especially the album cover bc that is simply a bang/curtain bang from the side
Lol what an interesting video for youtube to recommend to me whilst i do data entry.
Although im not really into her music, i do like her aesthetic (im female) and can admit that her vision/branding is strong. What you said about Sabrina=female gaze was interesting
I’m confused because I thought side bangs were bangs that were swept to the side from a side part? And Sabrina usually has a center part so how is that a side bang? Everything else you said was so on point though
LOVE this commentary. It's interesting the bangs debuted around the same time Sabrina switched from only cheek filler to submalar cheek implants (which add more projection and shape, plus tthe pillowy filler covering it) - like you said, she wasn't afraid for her glam to go more exaggerated with everything from wigs/extensions, heavy makeup + dark lip liner, etc - IMO the curtain bangs tie it in together perfectly
I just wanted to say that this video was so fun. I’m not usually one who connects with the people I watch on humour (it’s just not something I usually notice or prioritise) but girl you’re so funny 😭 like audibly laughed multiple times. And the topic though frivolous actually felt deeply serious and I’m now convinced of this entirely. Like write the thesis fr.
Having the important conversations over here 👏
she has a add w redkin where she says "we all deserve a better bang"
i hope you blow up! I love how concise and interesting your videos are and they aren't 1 hour! Love a good longform video essay but I also want shorter digestable content. I think you are hitting a broad demographic and I think youre already getting pushed by the algorithm!
@@goober479 this is extremely kind of you.
This is LITERALLY my roman empire, I'm gonna scream, I'm instantly subscribing 😭
While I do think her curtain bang era is sooooo iconic. I think that style became soooooo popular during 2020 when everyone wanted the blowout look during Covid using the blow dryer brush.
As a big forehead girly who's had bangs her whole life, I'm so glad we finally have decent tutorials and products 😭
I feel like the album cover was a curtain bang like I’m so sorryyyyyy
Excuse me miss, about bangs in the 2010s… alexa chung and zoey deschanel (pre new girl) carried the bang trend by grabbing from the 60s. Alexa specifically has cited jane birkin as her number one inspiration, who also has great bangs. When you pull from the 60s (as sabrina is clearly doing), the bangs always show up.
Bangs are a direct result from going back to a specific time period for aesthetics. I would know because I have been doing this for years, but also it is just a pattern that keeps showing up with the girls who pull from that specific era.
You're fav youtuber omg😭✅️✅️✅️
this is the most important video i've ever watched

How over analyze i am:
Is the youtube channel name "misspelling" intentional?
@@mandysberi my name is alana so it’s a lazy pun hehe, but analyzing is with a z in the US if that’s what you mean (vs analysing in uk)
@@overalanalyzing I get that! It is really clever. But that's not the channel name. That's NOT what shows up next to the subscribe button. "alanalzying" > alana lzying (the z and the y are swapped: lyzing).
