    As I was editing this video, I was struck by how many times I talked about being "gripped by the fantasy of aesthetic perfection,” even though I had JUST filmed the check-in video in which I talked about how the fantasy self has lost importance in quarantine. I think there must be something about the idea of making a purchase that brought the fantasy self out of the woodwork. It’s like, in the everyday reality of quarantine, I don’t feel distracted anymore by the fantasy self-she’s almost laughable. But it appears that preparing to spend $20 on something in this time of economic uncertainty was a high-pressure situation for the part of me that manages my relationship with beautiful things, and in relation to the purchase, my perfectionism reared its ugly head.
    In other words: my apartment doesn’t look polished anymore, I’m not wearing statement outfits, but if I’m going to go so far as to BUY something, then it has to be LITERALLY MIND-MELTINGLY PERFECT IN ONE THOUSAND WAYS!!!!! Or at least that’s how I felt when I was gripped by the fantasy of aesthetic perfection as I browsed the secondhand market for workout shorts. Hoping to avoid similar frenzies in the coming months.
    Thanks for watching! xo!

      Hannah Louise Poston the comical psychotic internal drama over a workout outfit has me laughing myself silly in commiseration! That is EXACTLY what I do and then (sometimes, hopefully) I step out of the inward spiral like a V-8 moment and remember - ‘it’s only yellow quilt fabric just buy what works’. Did I proceed to buy what was useful and practical or use what I have on hand or did I continue my search for enough amazing grungy yellow florals at the right price, that would get here soon enough for my liking, and on, and on? I think you know the answer to THAT question (I’ll post a picture of the finished quilt on IG soon 😜). Thank you for sharing and reminding us that perfection is a lie, but the struggle to escape its grips is R-E-A-L. I hope you have an amazing week and I hope your friend loves the shorts - they really are fantastic.

      Hannah Louise Poston Replying to this in case it is more likely you see it. I don’t often comment, but I am very good at research, and I am pretty sure those shorts (size M) are being sold on Poshmark by seller annieharris10 for $10. I’ll add the link in a separate comment, since youtube sometimes treats comments with links differently.

      Girl, my apartment is in the SAME STATE. We have a temporary third housemate right now (arrived just before things started getting crazy) and the shared living spaces way less cohesive as a result. Luckily it's someone I love and it's been great to have their energy here during quarantine.

    I just crystallized in my mind what i find so valuable in your channel. Started watching about a year ago and it was a revelation. I was becoming tired with all the beauty gurus trying new stuff every day(it's good when you try and find opinions on a product but a very unrealistic lifestyle for an ordinary person) so i started watching minimalist channels that have collections so perfectly edited that it was unrealistic for me too.
    How am i supposed to know my perfect things when i can't try them and just started figuring out my makeup journey? And your channel was very affirming in a way that you love makeup and you live with it in your real life, not just trying it a couple of times and stashing away. You showed that sometimes you fall in love with a thing and then it doesn't work or it didn't but then you figured out a way you liked it. I saw your tastes change as i binged your videos and it made me allow myself to have some time to figure my tastes out instead of trying more and more and more.
    It's allowed me to not care about a fantasy self and just live in my life for a bit, living not like a minimalist or a beauty guru in training but just as myself, with what i have and find value in my experience. I didn't feel bad for not living someone elses perfect life anymore. Living my life is not a race to some utopian destination, it's just doing the best you can do in your particular place in life and moving slowly to a place you think will suit you better. And sometimes that place is a couple steps back, where you can find that there are many roads you didn't know were there before cause you were too focused on some far away place to look around you

    Your reviews are always SO much deeper and better than any other on the YT platform. You actually spend time with the product and have an opinion. Sometimes I wonder if anyone else actually puts the products they talk about to the same kind of wear test that you do. I never feel as though I’m getting a thorough opinion on products from people because they have SO much stuff to try and to use that they use it two times and their review ends up being a little better than a first impressions. Thanks for purchasing the things you have and reviewing them. I look forward to your reviews.

    I've been window shopping a lot out of boredom, but I've been good at staying within my budget, and I know you and other budgeting/conscious consumer youtubers have been a huge part of that. To help scratch the "buy something" itch I've been keeping a running list of charities to donate to every week when I get my unemployment check.

    Reading your pinned comment and seeing previous video i am struck by the lessons 50 has brought me this year. I wouldn’t have stated i was caught up in looks and yet the “aesthetics” of my face and body have changed and continue to change...perhaps the experience earlier in life of losing that :fantasy self” can be helpful later as you age? I am looking at the “fantasy self” now as the younger me i no longer am. Yes there are some parts i am glad i am past (so much so), but there are definitely things I miss...life is about losses, big and small and all is practice maybe? Gees...existential Sunday..thanks for the inspiration to think about things in this context to apply to my own 🙏🏻

    I'm so sad for you that your purchases didn't work out this month, but it was so relatable to my own experiences the last couple weeks that I feel like I was laughing with a friend over shared disappointment. I have been so excited to receive a few different packages over last couple weeks. I excitedly checked my mailbox after receiving a delivery notification only to discover that all I received was a shipping label. No package, just a label. Another package is seemingly lost in transit. Others are just taking so much longer to arrive than usual (which is understandable given that most of us are doing more online shopping). I have been bummed at the delay in adding longed for beautiful things to my collection, but now I'm laughing along with you, so thank you for sharing! :)

    I've fallen down the rabbit hole searching for "that perfect something" more times than I'd like to admit. More often than not it didn't end well for me; I wasn't satisfied or fulfilled in one way or another, sometimes very similar to your athletic outfit journey or hours wasted with no results. Over many years I've given over to "signs of fate" telling me if I should or should not have something for it's intended purpose (sometimes I was searching for a giftable item).
    So, what does this mean? If I didn't find it hanging on the rack in my size and color or on the shelf, and it couldn't be found in a very limited cursor internet search, then I had to pass on the item. This saves me money and my sanity.
    I love how eloquent you explain your thoughts and share them with us. Thank you!

      I often shop in thrift stores where price per kilo is pretty high on a day of the week when they stock up and drops every day until next week when there will be new things available. If i found something i liked in the evening early in this cycle i.'d tell myself that i'll go there tomorrow and if it's still there i'd buy it. Then it'd be cheaper and if it's not there i save money either way

    Do you think maybe the shorts you had already were kids size? I realized recently I've been wearing a kids large of my adidas track pants and I wear a medium in their women's line.

  • @cecileganel
    @cecileganel 4 роки тому +23

    Girl. When you said your other shorts were a Large you should’ve heard me yelling at my iPad. NNOOOOOOOOO. Around 2015-2016 Nike went to a little more vanity sizing and I KNEW that would be too big! Despite actually being about 5lbs bigger in those years (and since... on a small frame), I went from a medium to a small at a SOLID size 6 (almost never a 4). It’s interesting to hear you speak of “aesthetic perfectionism” with athleisure. Because I very much shoot for that because I literally live 80-90% of my farm life in cute athletic wear. So I think it’s more of an example of “knowing your real/practical life”
    My food budget in April was flipping crazy town. I went off my rocker because I was feeling very “girl who survived hurricanes/food insecurity PTSD.” So I brought it down to $250 for May. I HAVE TO EAT THE STUFF IN MY HOUSE. Okay. I’m done with that. Otherwise my budget has been going well and I’ve been doing some extra investing. Life is weird, but I’m doing well. TFS as always Hannah.

      @HannahLouisePoston  4 роки тому +6

      omg Cecile why didn't I consult you?? If only I had known! But I'm glad to know that the facts of history align with my experience. My butt is apparently a vanity-shorts medium :)

    • @cecileganel
      @cecileganel 4 роки тому +4

      Hannah Louise Poston 😂😂. I’ve been deeply in the world of athletic wear since 2010. So I’ve been through all the companies going to vanity sizing. Even athleta- my favorite- when they were purchased by Gap. Much like other fashion athletic wear does change styles year to year. Hopefully you can find those in a Medium and they fit the same.
      The other thing to consider with older elastic bands shorts (because I have plenty), is that the elastic does lose its tenacity after a few years. So it is possible those shorts are one of a kind to you now that you’ve “worn them in”... much like a good pair of shoes. Good luck on your hunt!

    I know I'm super late on this video so hopefully you see this - but since you are making a quilt, I highly recommend taking your old tshirts that you don't want to keep and make a t-shirt quilt! I did it last year with all my old high school and college tshirts I never wear and gave them a new life on my couch and I get warm fuzzies with all my memories in a blanket.

    LISTEN. I BOUGHT ORCHID. And it's like a creamy, muted version of faded clementine (or a more satin version of Nars' Jane) and it's just SO SO GOOD. I put it on just to look at it before bed, hesitated to take it off, then put it on again a few minutes later. It does for me what a red does in terms of contrast between my dark hair and pale skin, but looks grown up and put together enough for my grown up put together midwife job. I am so glad that I have it. It's really a joy in my collection, and I can tell it might be a signature lipstick for me. I very rarely get this excited about a piece of makeup.

    Oh, yes, I've been down the floral shorts road more times that I care to admit (not literally looking for floral shorts though)! I become possessed by my obsession with finding an ideal object (i.e. usually clothing, accessory, cosmetic, or home décor) and rarely does it actually exist and even if I find a facsimile, it is frequently disappointing. Current obsession: finding the perfect neutral French girl red lipstick! It was generous of you to not return the shorts to the Poshmark seller! You could always sell them, if they don't fit or suit your friend! Btw, your hair is a dream!

    I know that the shorts buy was frustrating. Plus the shirt. Next time you want to do that, go on the NIKE website and check the sizing for the item. You will be able to tell more easily what size you are. Hey, if you want an item of clothing, you might as well get what you think you will enjoy wearing.

  • @littlewingedzebra

    also! i totally feel you on the spending money on food thing- like, if you can't buy things, you focus more on the food you buy. this is what happens to me when i'm being strict with my spending on stuff- suddenly i'm buying all the "nice" food, like it's a treat. budget-wise it's still better than buying stuff, but it just proves how much we want the external world to fill some hole in ourselves. it's like we seek a reflection of ourselves outside of us that will mirror back to us how we want to see ourselves. so, finding that aesthetically perfect thing means that you, as an aesthetically perfect person, exist. you see yourself reflected in that object, and then others will see you as possessing that object it, and therefore, what this object represents is what you ARE. but of course, we are who we are no matter what gets reflected back at us from the outside. it all has to come from within, as we all subconsciously know. it's the struggle to turn ourselves inside out that is so, so difficult.

    One of the few benefits of the global lockdown and resulting delay in mail delivery is that parcels are taking so long that I’m receiving things I bought in a frenzy months ago. I think when we're restricted in so many ways, it is natural our least desirable tenancies surface very quickly; even for something like a workout gear purchase.
    The desire to buy unnecessary items looms large above me each day these past couple of months. However, today I used up the entirety of my "miscellaneous" budget to purchase my mother a bouquet for mother's day. Her happiness and continuous thanks and gushing over them made it extremely worth it for me 😊
    Currently I am not striving for aesthetic perfection in my purchases however. I am lamenting my own inability to create the perfect aesthetic for my Instagram account while my entire community around me celebrates #mermay 😔 It sounds so silly but I want to feel a part of the community when I have no other way, but i am stymied by my desire to have everything look perfect and not amateur. At least my makeup can be "flawless" when I go on to work tomorrow.

    Enjoyed this. Was glad it was shorter. In quarantine there is a certain amount of media fatigue, so my "attention budget" is smaller and I am less into longer videos. Nice to have a short and sweet one talking about things that we have as a common experience. For me, this includes buying used clothes online for exercise and other purchases, as well as buying new makeup and convincing myself that it is replacement or is addressing a gap in my makeup wardrobe. Definitely more comforting to look at eye shadow than at the news.

    My economic situation is actually (short term at least, who knows about the future) better off since the pandemic started. I don't like to purchase online, so previously my non-essential expenses were mostly shopping at thrift stores and going out to eat. So now that I am no longer doing that I am just sitting at home not shopping at all! And it is actually nice because I find more time to appreciate the lovely things I already have. And that in turn makes me want to shop even less, because I dont want my lovely things to get lost in a clutter of new things, or even the chase after new things.

    I did a good job of staying under budget in March and April. Now that's it's May I've been spending way more money. I used up all the pantry staples and freezer foods so I needed to do a big restock. And I've been spending more on positive mental health things-still paying for dance classes and singing lessons, therapy, gardening supplies. All these activities are helping to keep me sane in these crazy times. In April I cut back on dance and singing and saw a dip in mood.

Theatres are going to be among the worst hit industries, many (most where I live) are non-profits, and it made ethical sense not to ask for my money back. Because my husband and I are fortunate enough to still be working, I haven’t felt the financial pull of not spending. I don’t think I’ve bought anything too absurd, but the itch to shop is real when there’s only so much to occupy my brain at home. My budget is also fairly small, making it easier for me to not go nuts. But I feel like I have added to cart without checking out approximately twice a day. Most of what I actually purchased has been replacement items, but I bought cabinet knobs and a few second hand items of clothing for no discernible reason except to fulfill my fantasy aesthetic self.

I have since purchased a few new bits when a favorite brand was having a sale, and I'm contemplating replacing my joggers that are getting a ton of wear. In the beauty space I bought my one replacement item last month (mascara!) And last week I placed an Ulta order two replacements and a couple extras that I had been thinking about. In general I'm spending less, way within my budget instead of waiting to get more money each month. Trying to shop smart and only but what/when it makes sense to.

    Why dont you get them tailored

    • @inkasaraswati7625
      @inkasaraswati7625 4 роки тому +2

      Hannah makes clothes for a living, so if she really wanted to do it she could do it herself. But I'd imagine her vision of it being a "perfectly aesthetic" object is already destroyed. So even if it gets tailored, the shorts is no longer "that perfect one" but rather another one that she wears so she can get by, which she already has plenty of already. The shorts' design is not a simple one, so it's a rather complicated one to tailor (or if she tailors it in a simplistic way, it would have lost major aspects of the design). Also Hannah loves to give gifts, so I'm not surprised she decides to do so. I'm not trying to speak for Hannah, it's just a couple of things I suspect affect her decision!
      (I actually had the same thought as you because I tailor a lot of my clothes, but then I saw the shorts and I was like, na-ah there's no way I'm going to destroy that).

I spent so long hesitating on an order with mostly necessities and three frivolous things that I ran out the clock on two coupons I was using, and ended up spending six extra dollars and earning thirty fewer rewards points. Oh dude. I relate. The athleisure size range absolutely changed in almost every company maybe five or six years ago for MOST main line atheletic companies. I basically dropped a size at Athleta in most things. My suspicion, my hot gossip, is that it was part of the lululemon backlash because of some of their comments about sizing and "not thin" women in their yoga pants. Lulu and I have a long and tortured history, but long story short, I have two almost identical pairs of workout shorts that I wear in the exact same way you describe. One is Lulu and one is athleta and the Athleta is a size smaller (but also slightly bigger). Yoga clothes are actually where my most destructive and weird fantasy self can play out in historically giant clothing hauls. Apparently for yoga clothes (and to some extent riding clothes), if I don't look like I am actively training for the Hunger Games, I am failing at life. It's extreme and silly and yet it just happened again this week when I tried to buy a yoga top at Target and almost lost my mind And it will lead me to allow myself to buy things from Lululemon, which is the literal definition of "does not align with my values" clothing retailer. I mean, I HATE the things they stand for, but I still will throw down for their tanks. I have worn my yoga tops to bits and some are just unsuitable in fit (or fantasy self). I'm just going to go onto old navy, search for athletic tank tops, put them in a cart, close my eyes and let it happen. If I even try to do more, I'll end up at some yoga courtier with everything under the sun in my cart. No. Hard Pass.

    But, if you’re going to splurge on another pair of those shorts, may I suggest going to Nikes site or a retailer that sells them like Sports Chek and checking the CURRENT sizing against what your old ones are? I’d hate for you to hunt down and pay for a medium only to have those too big as well. I think the current vanity sizing is different than it was the last time you bought shorts 🙂
