Steve M: You are the man! Took me an hour to do what the dealer told me would take 3 hours and $1,500 to fix. Mine is a 2007, and virtually identical to the '03. Many thanks. I have to hold the switch to retract and close the roof, but either it will lock in and work as it should in time, or I will live with it. It's been broken for three years and now it works. Thanks so much!
Thank you very much! A REAL MECHANIC, AND HONEST, on top of it, not a parts replacement guy... A rare view, really. In my case (Subaru, Forester 2002) it won't OPEN, neither CLOSE. The window comes DOWN, but it not Move backwards. Before dismantling everything... could you help, please? I am a retired senior guy, and I hate to think how much $$$ they would charge me, coming into their shop!! Thank you again!!!
Excellent ! My sunroof struggles to open. I took it in for a service and was told by the Subaru dealer it would cost $2,500 Australian dollars...just for the parts !!
Excellent. My sunroof was stuck and wouldn't close all the way. It appears that the motor needs to be cleaned up as demonstrated. I will do that later when I have more time. In the mean time I was able to put an allen wrench in the motor and crank it closed manually. Thanks.
Steve, if the sunroof does not align properly when it closes, what may be the problem? The sunroof opens and closes, it's just one side that does not want to seal up properly.
hi Carlo, if your sunroof tracks straight (open to close) but doesn't lift one side to seal? then you might have a broken catch tab or (S) arm that raises the glass to seal. hope this helps.
Hello Steve, quick question for you! Trying to get my 99 forester sunroof to close after it decided to not work anymore. Took it to the shop and they can't seem to find a way to close it so I'm wondering if their is a manual way to do it like I saw in your video, any ideas on if thats possible and in the same spot for a 99? Thank you!
thanks that was just what I needed, the dealer told me it would cost $1,800. plus leave the car overnight. I'm going to try your way , I hope I can do without losing any parts. what did you use to clean it?
Go for it... Its usually a combination of cleaning and lubing up the track's along with servicing the motor as the video shows. Good luck,.. Hit me back if need be with more help or how it worked out for yoy.👍
Hey Steve I know this is old but my sunroof is getting slower and sometimes gets stuck. Then I have to wait and try to close it again holding down the button. Is this common?
Hi Garrett, Removal of the motor and cleaning the comintator (armature) and motor brushes as this video shows and it should improve the performance back to normal.
Thank you so much for the video! My 2010 stopped working. Even with the generation difference on the forester everything was the same as you showed. I’ll be putting everything back together tomorrow and I’m hoping this does the trick. Again thank you so much for the video. I do have a question. Those things that push in did you resurface those too? Or just clean them?
Hi Dominick, 1st. to answer your question? The things I push in "brushes" Just clean them, they are contoured to the shape of the armature "the spinning part" and kind of delicate, you don't really want to goof those up. 2nd. glad this video was able to help you out, let me know if you run into any troubles I'd be happy to help you in any way I can.
@@stevem9400 thank you so much once again. I got everything cleaned up and then I put some lubricant on the track and it’s working flawlessly again! I can not thank you enough for your video, you saved me thousands.
@@TheSurvivor287 I think thats great Dominick 👍... Good job in taking your time to do the job rite the first time "it say's alot about who you are" and now you have the experience and knowledge to help others.
Hello Efren, if your Subaru is left hand drive the fuse is located in the passenger side fuse panel, should be a 20amp located in slot #35. As far as the relay goes... it is integrated (part of) the motor and controler I show in the video. Hope this helps. Steven.
Hi! Great job ! Does this also work if my motor is just weak ? When it opens it sruggles and then, when closing it moves 5 cm per time and have to press the button many times. After doing that twice sometimes the motor completely stops and i have to wait until it "cools maybe" ? and starts again...
Hello, thank you for the perk... And yes I have fix many slow moving or stalling sunroof's using this method along with cleaning and lubricating the the roof tracks and guide's
Might be bound up on the sun shade or the wind baffle arms. Also you might have to manually wind it closed so it knows where home is. Hope this resolves your issue.
If you were going to jump the motor disconnected from the pigtail but were going to use the SIX pin connector , rather than the 2 pin, WHICH pin would you jump POWER to and which would you jump GROUND to?? Thanks. I thought I figured this out, but my motor didn't run. Not sure if I was on the wrong pins or the motor is just dead! Thanks if you can help
HI, i don't know what year or model your Subaru is, but this should work if your wires are the same color coding. On the 6 pin connector you should see a "red" and "black" wire "larger gauge wire" 2. make sure 12volts to these 2 wires in the 6 pin plug have voltage "red = positive"... "black = negative". 3. Also in the 6 pin plug there should be a "green wire" a "white wire" and a "black wire with a yellow stripe". 4. While having 12volts to the "red" and "black" wire. Use a jump wire "paperclip--etc..." between the "green wire" and the "white wire" or "green wire" to "black with yellow stripe" this will make the motor drive forward or reverse? If it doesn't move you can follow the video on how to take the motor apart and clean the commentator hope this helps
Steve M I really appreciate this and the color coding IS the same, but since the motor itself only has 2 wires connected to it, I don't understand why it's impossible to run the motor with only 2 pins connected and not 2 PLUS the jumper wire. could you explain why, if it's not too time consuming for you thanks so much again
Hi, the jumper is needed between the "green wire" and "white wire" or "black wire with yellow stripe" to fire the relays that is internal on the motor controller "brain" under the black cover.
Steve, I hope you still read these! My 01 Forester sunroof does not track straight. The left and right brackets don't retract simultaneously, causing the glass to bind up in its frame. Is this a motor problem? Any suggestions?
@@cacarlto, seems like one cable is possibly stretched out or where the cable attaches to the slide mechanism "the bracket is bent or missing a bushing "
+k BLUE I'm located in California. I've also seen the tracks really gummed up that when trying to transition the roof fwd or bkwrd trips the auto reset breaker integrated within the motor controller.
