Window Motor Fix 2003-2008 Subaru Forester | Canon 6D 24-70mm | SG Forester
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2024
- My driver's side power window stopped lifting the window back up on my 2004 Subaru Forester XT. At first it was slow to go up, then it got even slower. Eventually the window stopped going up at all, and I had to use my hand to lift up the glass while pressing the window control. This is a very common problem on SG Foresters from 2003 to 2008.
In this video I show how I disassembled the door, removed the old worn motor, and replaced it with a new one.
I was able to replace the window motor without having to replace the regulator, allowing me to save money on parts and only replace what was needed. The regulator was just fine, but the motor had become very weak, especially when pushing the glass up.
Parts
I bought a Window Lift Motor from RockAuto:
CARDONE 824112
Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 61188FE000, 61188FE001, 61188FE020, 61188FE021, 61188FE022, 61188SA011, 62113FC000, 63113FC000, 63113FC100
www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....
This motor apparently fits the Front Left or Right Rear windows in the Forester.
Video was shot on a Canon 6D that kept dying on me during filming due to some Magic Lantern glitch, using 24-70mm Canon glass.
I wish all part replacement videos were as straight and to the point as this one. Thanks and good job!
Subaru designers: How do we hide even more screws?
Right! I mean gaddamn😔
😂
Great video thank you! I just replaced the driver's window in my 2004 Forester X. Took a couple hours but it works! I used the ACI 88051 from Rockauto, cost me $67. I was planning to remove the regulator like the instructions recommend but the old motor was toast and the window stuck all the way up so this video saved me. Couple things that might be helpful to others....a small hand mirror worked much better for me than my phone in selfie mode, the phone just wouldn't focus well but the mirror gave me a very clear, stable view of the whole thing. Also I wasn't able to move the regulator forward quite enough to get the old motor out and new one in without removing the bolts so I put a heavy nail through a couple of the holes to keep the regulator in place and prevent the spring from moving it. I also taped the window to the door along the bottom edge which may have helped a bit too. Overall not too bad a job!
Great video!
It’s true as someone commented that the three screwed holding the motor on are #3 phillips not the more common #2. It was super easy when I used a # 3 bit in my 90 degree ratchet screwdriver. Also, you can rebuild the motor mechanism really easy. It just needs to be cleaned up and lubricated. Mine worked great after that.
Wow I can't believe you got those screws. Mine were in there good. Had to remove the whole regulator assembly and window to get at them. And even then I had to put all my weight into them on the bench to have a chance.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. As an automotive mechanic this was one job I had not encountered before, and your video gave me the short cuts that saved me
much time. I was happy, as was my customer. Well done
Great tutorial and I appreciate your time. Helpful for folks who get pulled over a lot by the cops.
Thank you and you're very welcome!
So helpful! Tried to replace the switch first and realized it’s most likely the motor after watching your video. Continuing to learn even at 53! Thanks
Less than a day away from heavy rain and my new window motor just arrived today, good camera angles and in depth descriptions were very helpful. Thanks for showing us how!
Thank you for taking the time to put this online and sharing. It worked out great!
Simplest approach I've seen and the best presentation, many thanks
Although this wasn't what I was searching for I'm glad I watched. Excellent video production. Very clear, concise, and informative. Great footage. I'll surely include it with my go-to reference tools (for both of my foresters as well as DIY edits!)
Many thanks
This video was a great help. It was such a huge relief that I didn't have to remove the whole mechanism!
Thank you for this video. My driver side window recently fell off track. Motor still ran for a while but now the motor is not running. I am about to diagnose it and this information is helpful!
This is THE perfect video. It was soooo helpful to guide me though the project. Without this I was paying the mechanic.
Thanks a ton! I have to do this next week and your video will be a huge help. It's really the best of all that I've seen.
Many, many thanks for this video. You saved me so much time! I started to remove the whole window, but it is not necessary. Where can I spent you a couple of coffees !
Just finished this repair and this video was a massive help. Thank you!
You're very welcome Robert!
Saved me hours of work going down the path of removing window regulator just to swap the motor over. Thanks!!!
💪💪
Super helpful, way easier than taking out the entire regulator! Thank you. Quick warning that the regulator itself is spring loaded, if you get a motor off an old regulator assembly it might snap shut once the motor teeth are disengaged----watch your fingers.
You saved me loads of time and heaps of money with this video. Thank you so much, you're a champion!
You're very welcome, Seth!
Very simply done and of good quality! Awesome job and very helpful!
Awesome! Much appreciated! I've been putting this off for years on my girl's car... But I think today is the day after watching your video, haha.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Worked great, much easier than anticipated.
You're very welcome! 👍
thanks, following your video i was able to replace it - with some help from my 24 year old daughter and her small hands 😅
great step by step video
Thanks to you i fixed my ‘06 driver side window. I bought a replacement motor from eBay for $20. Window works perfect now. Except i have to pull up on the switch for the window to go down and push down to bring it back up.
Really? It's reversed?!
Thank you. Exactly what I needed😊
Great. Now all my screws are nice and stripped. Should now be ready to do it the hard way. Nice!
Good detail thanks
Good video . Thanks much sir!
Thanks for the video. I am in Zimbabwe
Hello from the USA 🙋♂️
Mine died once. I just disassembled a motor, dried it, lubricated it and it runs like a new. They fail because of moisture getting inside. Easy fix. No money spent.
Great video Thanks
Those 3 screws holding the motor on are #3 Phillips, not the standard #2. With a #3 bit in a flat ratcheting screwdriver, this is a 20-25 minute job, tops. Also, it helps to loosen the top two 10 mm bolts and remove the bottom one to get ample room to pull the motor down and out.
thnx for your help, I need to replace my driver side motor on my 2006 XT, it's running so slow and almost can't lift the window anymore.
Notice he did not film and add the 4.5 hours it takes to align the motor with the screw holes to mount it into place lol. That is not a cake walk when you have larger hands than the job requires. Good video.
8:38 - I don't know about 4.5 hrs, but I have very large hands and it was a tight fit, but doable. I talk about how to align it here at this timestamp.
Bueno !!!!!! Muchas gracias !!!!!! 👍 Good man y thanks !!!!
I would advise spraying silicone lubricant on the rubber corners near the side mirror that the window slides into when fully up at the base and also with the window up spray all the window sliding metal X brace tracks with it to stop that squealing. I have an 02 outback wagon 2.5 5spd and an 06 legacy gt 2.5 sedan 5spd and had to do this and stopped it. I also had to replace my two rear door handles which were broken and wouldn't open due to someone flipping the child lock and had to pull the door panels off with the doors locked and closed which is hard af! Then replace the rear driver side door lock actuator motor by splitting the assembly apart cause I didn't wanna buy the new assembly and replace and also the same foe the front left. Then had to replace the door master window switch on th3 driver side and fix the trunk lever pull handle so it would open the trunk. The key fob worked fine. Been a shit week doing this but fun when you learn more about your lil subieee lol
Hey my Friend I miss your Videos, pls bring some back :)
Thank you, trying to!
Thanks wish you lived in Fiji
Any idea if the window has just stopped working?
Any commone issues?
How do you get window down when the motors not working?
Very cool. Thanks.
Hope it helps!
Me too! Also, what difference is there in what you did and the other videos showing how difficult their process is? This is the first video I’ve seen where you don’t take part the regulator from the window and all that. You seemed to have made it work well and your process looks the least labor intensive.
@@The.Tamayo Depends on what was broken. Search these comments, I broke it down for someone else a while back. If the only symptom is the motor is too weak to lift the glass, your problem is the motor not the regulator. If your glass is off track or binding or jamming, you ha e a regulator problem. I don't know why others would replace both while only one was the problem 🤷♂️
Perfect! My motor is ceased as well. Thank again!
Very good bro, thanks for that. Would you know if all the 4 motors are the same, or are they side specific? Cheers!
Not sure but you could call an auto parts store and ask. Or Subaru parts department of a Subaru dealership.
danke schön

My window won’t go down. How do I determine if it’s switch or motor?
Thanks for the video! How did you fix your squeaky window? Mine is loud as F
There is this lube you can apply to the plastic guides that buffet the wind, basically a vasoline. Mine kind of went quiet after a day or two on its own. Is yours still squeaking?
what is the part number for the driver side window motor?
how did you know you just needed the motor and not the regulator as well? i have an 06 thats moving very slowly on driver side. it also sounds very scratchy. im assuming its just a motor replacement but want to make sure before beginning the repair.
Hi Austin, I didn't know ahead of time, I just made an educated guess and happened to be right (broken clock is right twice a day).
My issue was that the window was super slow going back up. It moved up and down on track just fine, but didn't have the juice to go back up. For those reasons I guessed the regulator was fine and just the motor needed replacing. If the window had issues going down, or jumping off track, or resistance on the way down, I would probably look into replacing the regulator too. But mine only had problems going up, and needed more power. So most likely the motor, not the regulator.
Hope that helps.
Great video - does it still work ? should I go for the genuine one or this one is fine ? thanks !
Hi Elior, yes works great. I'm not sure what you mean by genuine, but any OEM replacement should do just fine. It's a common motor used across many manufacturers from wipers to windows and other applications. Happy new year!
There's only one screw, you don't need to remove the door opener screw, it's part of the door not the panel. I find the door opener trim easier to pop out by prying inside first.
Ha, didn't know that or notice that. Good call out.
Hey mate, I’ve seen on other videos people mention you need to hold or chock the window up to stop it from falling down? I don’t recall you mentioning that. Is it not necessary to hold the window up? Thanks for the video
@@samnealon9633 not necessary if just replacing the motor. Might be required if replacing regulator.
@@SaveTheManuals thanks brother
Would this be the same for the subaru wrx as I cant find a video looks the same
Don't know for sure, but depending on the year of your wrx, it could be pretty close to this, yes. What year is it?
Probably the same if it's a GD
Thanks for the video it's super helpful. But I find it really hard to unscrew the bolts... They are so tight and rusted it's almost impossible not to round them.... Do you think I could cut them somehow ? Please somebody help me 😭😭😭 I tried sooo many times and failed
If you've already tried to PB blast them and they're still stripping/rounding out, you may need to either take it to a shop or else drill out the screws yourself. I'm not sure about the right or safe way to go about this. You might need to try and identify the EXACT location of the screw and drill it out from the other side, blindly. Good luck, sorry this is happening :(
Ok, screw #2 (bottom left) is stripped and there’s no way for me to get it out. I e tried star keys, flathead keys, and different sizes of Philips and I can’t get it out. Pliers won’t fit around the head because of the motor body, anybody have any ideas?
You might need to take it to a shop or drill the stripped screws out. Unfortunate :/
My Forester's driver's side window doesn't raise or lower. Is there a way to tell if it's the switch or the motor itself? Had the switch replaced 6 years ago.
Hi Gareth. Listen very closely as you touch the up/down switch:
- Do you hear a relay clicking?
- Or no sound other than the plastic switch moving?
- Do you hear any attempt from the window motor, at all?
- Does it feel like the motor is trying but too weak to move? Or completely dead?
Depending on the answers to the above, it leads one way or another.
@@SaveTheManuals
No clicking, no sounds in response at all.
@@garethjames3494 Do the other switches on the panel work? Is it just the driver's side window that is dead, or all windows? What about the power lock functionality on the switch, is it still operating or dead too? Mirror controls still work? Or are they dead too?
@@SaveTheManuals
Ok, everything else working: door lock button, window lock button, and mirrors operate. Just driver's window button doesn't function - no response if i press up or down. Thanks!
@@garethjames3494 Given the highly unlikely scenario that just one switch broke and none of the others did PLUS the highly likely scenario of the driver's side window motor going out (happens to most older Foresters), I'd definitely look to replace the window motor first. Probably don't need to replace the window regulator. If I were in your shoes, I'd do the window motor first, all evidence points to that being the most likely culprit of your symptoms. Hope that helps!
I see a lot of people replacing the whole regulator, which seems like a pain in the ass. It's probably pretty uncommon for those to go bad right?
If the window is stuck in the down position, how would I get it back up? I have the panel off. Thanks
Hi Joe, I'm not sure but searching Google and UA-cam for "how to raise power window manually" returned a ton of promising results. Have you tried that yet?
@@SaveTheManuals I've looked at a few but a few of them want you to cut the cables. That opens another can of worms! I've looked at other videos where you take the entire door apart to get the window regulator off but that seems like a lot too. I'll keep trying because I like your method. I've already ordered the motor.
@@joeciaccio1291 I saw one where they slowly pushed the window up by hand. I wonder if you'd be able to replace the motor with the window down? Or is it being down prevent you from being able to replace the motor?
@@SaveTheManuals I'm on my way to Harbor Freight to buy a low clearance right angle Philips screwdriver because it is too tight right now to get in there with the window down. I'm hoping that works. I've tried to push the window up, but it won't budge. Even if I try to push it while engaging the switch.
use a large size phillips screw driver easily removes the screw that work for me
What do you do if one of the screws is stripped?
Oof, that is a tough one. Are you able to get a picture of the stripped screw on your phone to see how bad it's stripped? I wonder if you could get a thin file in there to cut a flathead into the screw head? Or use a fatter gauge screwdriver to get more grip? Idk if all else fails, take it to a machine shop for advice or suggestions on how to remove it. Good luck 👍
@@SaveTheManuals used a hacksaw blade cut in half and took some painstaking time to turn the Philips screw into a flathead screw, used a stubby flat head screwdriver attached to vice grips and three heavy helpings of PB Blast to loosen the screw and wrench it out of there with my pile of tools. once i broke the seal of the screw (probably with loctite) it was easy. then i had to mice the window regulator out of the way to wiggle the blasted dead motor out only to find that the motor was NOT the one I needed, it was in fact the reverse image of what I needed. Returning the "new" motor and buying the right on on my way home to finish this now 4 day project! I am determined to fix this and finish this myself.
@@rebeccawalker2254 Amazing job and resilience! Sucks about the wrong motor but fixable!
How much should this cost at a mechanic shop?
Not sure, probably 2 to 3 hrs of labor plus the 50$ part so a few hundred dollars probably.
