    Each Persona game directed by Hashino is themed differently, and roughly based on a specific Major Arcana tarot card. The Major Arcana are pretty important to the franchise as a whole, so this was both a decision made to solidify that connection, and a decision that allows each entry to have its own unique flavor.
    Persona 4 is specifically based on the Temperance arcana, which represents balance and patience. Its all about not making decisions too rashly, and trying to determine the correct path to meet your goals. This is reflected in the main plot, which is a murder mystery where every detail must be scrutinized to determine the truth, as well as a number of the smaller interactions you have with other characters. Quite often the characters around you will be unsatisfied with some portion of their life, propose some drastic change, then come to realize that they find a lot of happiness in their current situation, and set about finding a way to improve the specific thing that leaves them unsatisfied.
    While a bit indirect, I feel like they attempted to tackle the theme through the music in a similar way to the character interactions. The Japanese pop-punk is full of energy, and gets you ready for action, while the lyrics emphasize the need to slow down and determine the true nature of things ("Yeah, naked truth lies, only if you realize
    Appearing in nobody's lives, 'til they sterilize
    Stop the guerilla warfare to keep it fair
    Bro, change your rage to a smarter greater cause
    You know the stake is high, stardom is near
    Those you sympathized with died, killers pass you by"). Its that kind of juxtaposition that I think the soundtrack is going for.
    Persona 5, which is the other one you've listened to, is all about the Star arcana. Its all about hope, inner strength, and growth. For some needed context, in the Major Arcana The Star follows The Tower, which represents ruin, or a great setback. So in the context of the Major Arcana, The Star is all about coming from a place of hopelessness, and making things better. As a result, Persona 5 is all about societal change. The protagonists see the broken system hurting those around them, and they do what they can to improve it. This involves them operating outside the broken system, which aligns them closely with the Japanese archetype of the gentlemanly phantom thief. The reason the music in Persona 5 is so jazz focused is because it aligns nicely with that aesthetic. It conveys a sense of class, while retaining the edge of rebellion.
    The only one you haven't listened to yet is Persona 3, which is about the Death arcana. Unlike what you're probably expecting, Death isn't about death itself, although Persona 3 does deal with that as well. Death is all about transformation, endings, moving on, and cycles. I cant really describe much else without spoiling the plot of Persona 3, but suffice to say a key theme is optimism vs pessimism. As a result, you get a mix of lighter and heavier sounds in Persona 3's soundtrack. This is probably best represented in Battle for Everyones' Souls, where its mostly comprised of heavier sounds, intercut with an excerpt of the more hopeful Aria for the Soul as the chorus.

      You're quite spot on on your assumption of P3's theme and cycles, as the game emphases the concept of loss and death but accept change and moving on. One social link is particularly based on that and a lot of the plot points revolve around this as well, especially The Answer's, the game sequel added in P3FES

    • @Skyblade12
      @Skyblade12 3 роки тому +14

      Persona 3 is entirely about death and how people react to death, how they are changed by it, how they come to terms with it, etcetera. EVERYTHING in the game revolves around this, from the music, to the art, to the character stories. All of it. It's an absolute masterpiece of a work, and I hope he listens to some of it, as it has a gorgeous soundtrack.

      Probably why P3 is still my favorite story and plot wise. Based off cycles and inevitably, the plot and the world dont revolve around you as the main character. Characters grow and change outside of your interaction with them. It honestly feels the most real out of 3,4&5.

    Alright since you've reacted to P4's battle theme now I have to recommend you "Mass Destruction" out of necessity, which is P3's main battle theme. I think it caught a lot of people off guard because P3 has a much more somber mood in general, so hearing that sht for the first time was wild.
    Also Persona in general just has a bunch of bangers from unexpected places, like honestly some of my favorite songs from Persona are songs that play when you're just casually strolling around town lol.

    I think one of the biggest things to draw me to the Persona series was the music. While I love the modern day settings and social aspects of the games, I was so blown away by the genres each game taps into with liberal use of lyrics. I was never super into JRPGs, so hearing clear lyrical tracks in pop, acid jazz, and even rap caught me off guard for just the normal battle themes. I was so used to every RPG battle theme being some orchestral track, so upbeat lyrical jams was such a surprise for me.
    Love the series and hope to see you continue diving into what it has.

      @bangormc3rd562 3 роки тому +2

      @@Toksyuryel That isn't true, but it's a very common misconception. Jokes about "they hate money" aside, they've traditionally released mainline games on PS because that's where they saw the market for Persona, and Atlus REALLY don't like making multiple SKUs for their products. It takes a lot more time and testing than most think even to side-port to a same generation console (and PC is the worst because it lacks any kind of unified hardware specs).
      Atlus has actually been a subsidiary of Sega Sammy since 2013 (meaning they just missed P4/P4G), although Sega has left them almost entirely independent. The only reason P4G got ported at all was that Sega, not Atlus, wanted to test the viability of multiple SKUs on Persona titles since P5 and P5R proved so successful (understatement). And apparently they thought it was a better idea to try it out on something that everyone and their mother hadn't already bought.

    Persona 3, 4 and 5 all have very different music styles. Generally within a game the style is relatively consistent, but when you compare the soundtracks of different games they are wildly different.
    For reference, this is battle music. Specifically its generic battle music that plays during random fight encounters, as opposed to boss music.
    Ok so the version you listed to was actually a cut down version of the song. It was missing the additional verses and the tone shifts. It's largely accurate to the game primarily because combat doesn't last long enough to get to those verses, but its definitely not the full song.

    I gotta say i really dont particularly like this one. Its more of an anime pop song lacking something to make it appealing

    Maaan, how could you make so many reactions (60) and forget about Prince Of Persia The Warrior Within game? Almost any ost you reacted to is a piece of useless nonsense in comparison with Stuart Chatwood's masterpiece. :)
