My dad and I have been estranged for 10 years. Not a single word spoken between us since he left. Watching this video made me want to reach out to him and show him this video. It was our dream project to start boat building together. We lived in Maine too so this hits close to home.
@@cxceventsdo it before it's too late no matter the time or unspoken words . We only have one chance and one time at this life if anything do it for yourself. I know exactly where you are coming from I'm just now working on a good relationship with my dad . I'm 32 he will be 60 in December.
Your shop and tool chest are outstanding. But what (to me) is most laudable is the fact that you devoted time to a project you and your kids could do together. That's something to be really proud of.
Thank you. I agree. Both of my boys are woodworkers. My older son is building his first boat and my younger son just restored a boat last winter. Nothing I've ever done in my life was more important than working with them in my shop
Mr.Smith this is a fellow Mo. resident, and woodworker since a very early age. I can see the love ,care ,though and work you put in your craft. It is a beautiful thing to see, very talented craftsmanship ,thank you.
In Argetina we have a saying to describe surprise: "I'm with my mouth open!" Very clean, neat, beautiful and peaceful. Excellent music. The furniture of the tools ... impressive ... new compartments never stopped showing one, another and another more ... EXCELLENT !! Buenos Aires.
Wonderful hanging tool cabinet. I come back frequently to watch and listen again and again. It NEVER gets old. The boat you built with your sons is exquisite! Thank you for sharing.
Gravydownshirt, I think he does stare lovingly at all those beautiful tools like we all do on occasion, however, I suspect those tools see plenty of work too!
That shop, tool chest and a beautiful boat are the jewels of a man's dedicated work, passion and love! Thank you for sharing your joy and pride with us.
That shop is cleaner and neater than my HOUSE - by FAR! Gorgeous! The tool storage unit itself is an example of "fine woodworking" - built so well and very beautiful... Makes me envious of the skills Mr. Smith possesses!
What impressed me the most is you taking the time and having the foresight and indeed patience, to pass your skills onto your children. Much respect and well done.
WOW Dan you're living the life. And what a beautiful part of the world you live in. I seriously hope you earn your living from carpentry as you are one very talented gentleman. I've always had parts of the tool chest I hope to build once of collected enough of the "right" tools and what you've built is and I hate to say it so much better. The design, detail and material contrast is magnificent. I love the dovetails on the plane shelfs. Also as a lover of all things marine your boat is just fabulous. Truly an inspiration and I wish you many more years enjoying your craft. One of the best I've seen on here.
Thank you for your kind comments. I searched for sometime to find the tools and spent much more time cleaning them up. My time in the shop is what I live for.
Extreme Excellence ! I enjoyed immensely viewing your museum like shop and all within it. Your tool chest on the wall, one layer after another is the finest example I have seen. Have to view again !
Daaaannnnngggg Dan!!! I agree with Max Maker - absolutely gorgeous shop! "Craftsmanship" doesn't come close to describing it!! Something all woodworkers secretly dream of, I should think. I know I do.. Well done. You should be proud. Thanks for the tour!
Such a beautiful shop! So inspiring and uplifting to listen to his story! I really enjoy these videos and listening to these amazing craftsmans stories. Thank you! Please make more of these!
That might be on the best wall hung tool chests I've seen. I've been thinking about one for a while so watch videos/read stories on different versions as I can but this one stands out both being compact, having a lot of storage for the size, and have a lot of simple but elegant design elements. It doesn't jump out when closed, but once you open it you see just how much thought and work went into it. When I finally design what I want I think I will be coming back to this video again.
The sign of a master craftsman is the state of his workshop and his tools...and I have to say the signs here are of a true master caraftsman!!! That shop is astonishing! Just the craftsmanship that went into that one box is amazing!! I dont think they are tools.....surely they are wands!!! Fantastic!!
Wow ! Beautiful Shop, Tool Chest ,and Boats all in one i too have been lucky enough to share my love of Woodworkingband Boating with my son beginning with him around the same age as you have mine has grown up to be a pretty darn good Craftsman
Dan, this is a fantastic video. I just left my wood shop, I quit early since it’s family day in Canada. Now I want to go back and work some more after seeing this. Beautiful music too.
I do not want to describe this work of beauty with words. I am very happy for you and the calling you have found. I work with woods. I only mention this to say that I admire your efforts in wood, however, the boat that you have built "with your sons" will be a difficult one to better. Thanks for showing me this work of art!
Ha! I am in the same boat. Suddenly, my hand tools that I once thought priceless seem like things found in the ditch compared to this; why should I build such a nice cabinet for them? No, of course not. I am now inspired.
Now that I think about it, this one is preferable. Studley's is more an art piece, but too much going on and too heavy. Smith's is more practical and beautiful as well.
Dan Smith Why not compare? Lol! I'd pick yours over Studley's. I can actually use yours. Anyway, nice to see a resurgence in craftsman like yourself. Used to be a dying breed because of economics and a host of other reasons, so its inspiring for me and many others.
After years of indulgence and copious space, my tools are now stashed away under the bed in plastic tool boxes in our new house. It will be a few years before I have a workshop again (we have a 3 year old too). This is tool-store-porn. Nice video Dan S. Thanks.
My dream workshop!!… I left school for a boatbuilding apprenticeship and the first job we had was to make a toolbox, 40 years on and I've still got it... our second job was to build a Clinker. Absolutely beautiful!!! It would also be interesting to see a video or find a book about the planning, design and placement of everything. That is a fantastic boat. I hope your family gets to put it in the water from time to time. Good times!
Beautiful , and if I hadn't gotten into the craft so late in life, it would be very inspiring as well. But I'm a realist, I'll never have that, but thank you for sharing it.
Well most of humanity doesn't have room for a workshop and look out the window and see a pristine lake:) At least we can take a hike and enjoy nature:)
A beautiful handcrafted useful and awesome cabinet ! Would you consider publishing the source of the hardware and share a tutorial on how to make the cabinet ?
Thanks for your comments. The butt and knife hinges are Brusso, and the outer closure devices are called skylight fasteners from R&W Rope Warehouse. Both companies have online stores. The brass finger pulls can be tricky to find with the right diameter. Some have too small an inner diameter to easily use as a pull. I can't remember where I finally found a size that fit my finger, but they are common in marine hardware stores and Amazon.
Beautiful shop and tool chest, inspiring to say the least. I love the layers, there is an article in a recent WOOD magazine (I think) that highlights your cabinet and the construction techniques you used - a good article. Is it fair to assume that at least some of the dovetails were machined? From what I could see they all look hand cut though! The design is as beautiful as the cabinet and choice of hardwoods - Ash makes a great material for strength, I prefer it over Oak mainly because Oak is everywhere! Nuff rambling, great work Dan, thanks for sharing outside a subscription to a WWing magazine - appreciate the inspiration!
You got to love guys like this. All the money to buy the best. The skill to make beautiful pieces. And it looks like nothing was every used. And my shop while clean, and organized, it looks like a shop not an operating room. LMAO Should add, look at a guy like Diresta. His tools are used and look it. His shop is used and looks it. Amazing. To all the trolls--he had Fine Woodworking magazine coming to visit and photograph his shop and tools--of course he would have everything so meticulously clean and looking new! That doesn't mean he doesn't use the tools or shop... Where do you think the boats came from? Sears?
I like the tool chest, it is compact enough for me, although I probably need something a bit smaller so it is portable, but this isn't far of. Thanks for the inspiration! How much is the depth? I guess it is around 20 cm, but I am not sure

I never tire of watching this video. The shop is as exquisite as the boats you built with your sons and the ingenious cabinet you built with them.
Wow! Thats got to be the most beautiful workshop I have ever seen. It is so clean that it seems as if there is never even any work done there.
Max Maker He probably never does use the tools...just opens them up every now and then to stare lovingly at them...
perhaps I would do the same...lol
Gravydownshirt, I think he does stare lovingly at all those beautiful tools like we all do on occasion, however, I suspect those tools see plenty of work too!
Lbhunter63 I think they see more polish than work! Worked tools don't remain that cosmetic and totally unmarked.
Or, perhaps it never ends and there is simply good clean-up time at the end of the day.
This guy has done more work and produced more beautiful items than all of us combined, who the hell are we kidding? He’s just a superhero of wood.
I could watch this over and over and over again. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Very rare to see a beautiful tool chest like this! Reminds me of the Studley chest in the American History Museum. Mr Smith does beautiful work.
