Just a beautiful piece of work. The textures you’ve created through a mix of foreground tools and background architecture is really sublime, wonderfully inventive and satisfying. I really have to hand it to you for being inspired by Studley’s example but following your own original path!
I really respect the amount of love and care you have for your tools. After a while the tools are like family, and you’ve made a beautiful place for them to live. Bravo.
I had a friend that played base guitar when he was younger. I said it must be nice to be a musician, to which he replied "There are musicians and players". He said muscians compose original music where he himself just played other peoples music. You are undoubtedly a musician in that regard. Beautiful!
I’m wildly impressed and excited to find your channel, especially so early. Someday, when you channel blows up, as I am sure it will based on what I have seen so far, I will say I was one of your first 1000 sub’s!
Because I haven’t been able to settle on a tool chest and because my shop has just an 80” ceiling, I’ve kicked the can down the road regarding the investment in the lumber to build what I’m sure I want in a standing chest (wall mount isn’t really an option in my mind). What I’ve done instead is to work out of a Dutch Tool Chest; admittedly it larger than most people build in the DTC. I do like how I can roll it too other areas but never have (kind of like a feature on a car/tool/phone you’ll never use), but it’s big enough to hold it all including halves and rounds. I’m thinking these two things: that I’ll continue to establish my work flow regarding how/where tools nest/their retention and also that my handtool collection has stabilized quite well enough that it won’t grow by much more. I think the second bit about the tool collection informed by the first means I’m maybe about ready to tackle the challenge. I’ll build in cherry primarily; if I could pick only one wood to work with it’d be maple, but if I could only pick one wood to live with it’d be cherry. So cherry it will be. Thank you for your inspiration and I still have the page corner turned when your chest was first featured and I think I’ve pinned it multiple different times to boards on Pinterest too 😂. So neat to have a face/voice to go with it.
I have watched this video a number of times. It has me stuck, for insperation. I have always loved Bugatti cars, so I feel, must use the some of the blue that was famously used on his son Ettore's cars. So you have set me a task, to find Buggati works. Furniture and design. It helps that my brother lives in France. Thank you for you passion. Yes I have a big problem with space as I have collected tools for many years. Like BCTW. Your saw till is a stunning example of art and need. I love you calm, must be the mountain air...
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL😍🥰😍🥰😍🥰😍🥰😍🥰😍🥰. I too am fascinated with Studley Chest. Norm Abram did an episode of building a wall hanging Chest and I was hooked on the chest. I never wanted a floor chest because Being tall I never wanted to have to stoop down to grab my tools. I felt a hanging wall chest was the way to go. I cant wait to move into a house to build one. You have inspired me even more. Thank you!!!!!
Enjoyed listening to your thoughts, on such a personal and amazingly beautiful piece. Very inspirational, thanks to your wife for insisting you share this one!
That is 100’s of thousands of woodworkers dream, to ACTUALLY build a tool case as lovely as yours. A labour of love - it shows! I had an idea toward the end, as people do, lol. The section that contains your spoke shaves etc, could be recessed further, the 1/4 circle extended to a full circle that rotates, enabling storage for four times as many tools and add some of that ‘hidden trickery’ that some tool cabinets are known for.
Great attention to detail, very inspiring. Would love to see a breakdown of the tools you have collected and the reason you chose that particular tool.
I thought about going through individual parts of the chest, talking about the individual tools and how they fit into their holders, if there's enough interest. We're +1 on that idea!
A +1 from me on more videos of this beauty 😁 I know what the tools are, how to use them and most of how they're fitted..... I jus wanna see as much of this cabinet as possible 😁
Wow, stunning, I like your method for the understanding of build time hours. I'm building my workshop but I'm a beginner and your tool cabinet is a huge inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness this is as beautiful as it is useful. Now that you have a son build a smaller one for his little wooden tools. One day when you pass on to him you your tools contained in your work of art he can return to you his little boy tools for you to give to your grandson.
Beautiful work. I have that issue of the magazine and was happy to see more pictures and a bit of the background for this piece. Well done and an inspiration to the rest of us to get out there and build something great. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely beautiful. Studley woud tip his hat to you, as do I. Also, your video is very well done, thank you, More, more, more!!! (age 72 third generation woodworker) And thanks for the introduction to Carla Bugatti. Unbelieveable pieces and designs.
Loved this when you made it, even more so now after hearing you claim Carlo Bugatti as one of the influences…definitely captured the spirit. Well done.
The base is a beautiful piece. More detail on that would be appreciated. I have my upper built (not yet fitted out) and realized; as you did, that it can’t be wall hung. Been puzzling over a base, and how to fasten the two together.
This cabinet slides, from the back, into an area with 45 degree chamfered trim on three sides. It's kind of like a cross between a french cleat and the shoe mount on a camera.
They're crank neck chisels from Buck Bros that I refinished the handles on. They're not great but I make them work. I much prefer the crank neck style to straight pairing chisels.
I've been dreaming of my own tool cabinet for a couple of years now, you mentioned your inspiration; mine is also the Studley chest...... along with your cabinet!! I seen a picture of your cabinet online and had to save any pictures I could find of it to my phone. This video was a real treat for me, I could see a lot more detail than what's in the pictures I have 😁 I thank you for this video, and also; even greater thanks, for the inspiration you have given to me Sir!! 😁
That’s stunning! Lots of great little details and ideas in there, and it comes together into a really impressive whole. I can’t believe you have under 400 subscribers - soon to jump much higher, I’m sure! Well done.
Amazing tool cabinet mate, thanks for sharing. I'm still buying/selling/trying/expanding/etc my tool collection too much to contemplate something like this. Clearly you've become pretty content with the tool selection that you have, very cool.
I actually did leave room for more tools in the middle and right hand drawers in the base, but years after I finished the cabinet, there's still a lot of room in there.
Wow! That is beautiful! Thanks for sharing. I'm about to start building a work trailer for making my art and small furniture works at fairs and festivals. One of the things I've been wanting make for a very long time - also inspired by Studley and Bugatti - is a decorative tool cabinet like this. However, due to the portable nature of my lifestyle and my goals for my art work, my version will be on casters. I plan on doing a second version that's a rolling Jewelers bench for the jewelry and watch making and repair portion of the business.
There have been (much) simpler versions of this design for years, and (good eye, btw) Nick Sawyer did one like it after asking it if I was cool with that (I was).
@@themountaintopjoinersshop8422 I don't have any traditional handsaw, but if I ever make a saw till, I'd follow your design. I have binged your cabinet yesterday and your ideas and design are marvelous. I was astonished to see someone bringing up Bugatti and thus Art Noveau. "Art for Art's sake" has never been so rare in our days.
I've long felt Carlo Bugatti has been miscategorized as Art Nouveau. The soft, sweeping, organic tendril-like curves of Art Nouveau are conspicuously absent from most of his work. There are, of course, curves in Bugatti's work but they're different. That plus the nature of the surface decorations he used land him squarely in the Aesthetic Movement (in my opinion) which, not coincidentally, is what the saying "Art for Art's Sake" is most often associated with.
This looks fantastic! Once I've finally fought my way to the end of my list of things to make for other people I'm finally going to have the time to make my own tool cabinet and this has given me some real inspiration. I like how you've used the space in the saw till for storing spare irons, very clever. You look familiar, have i seen you in Furniture and Cabinetmaking Magazine?
@@themountaintopjoinersshop8422 ahh yes, i remember the hallway mirror now I've looked at your website, completely different to any I've seen before. I hadn't heard of Carlo Bugatti before today, really interesting stuff. Thanks
Super inspiring I've wanted to make one for a long time and it was nice to know that you'd already made a few before you reach this pinnacle. Did you study in school or did you teach yourself all this?
I always endeavor to do my best when it comes to grammar, and don't mind being respectfully corrected, but that sign was clearly made by a kid, so I, personally, would just let it slide.
Thank your wife for me :). That was beautiful.
This is not a piece of furniture, this is a piece of art. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!
Thanks!
This is a beautiful cabinet. More than functional, it is a work of art. Lovely piece, thank you!

And that you chose to listen to her... LOL
This tool cabinet will without a doubt be appreciated for many generations. The respect, research and depth that goes into your work is inspiring!
It is certainly one of the nicest tool cabinets I have seen and I've seen a lot of them. I love your workbench too.
I’m sure Quincy Mass native H O Studley would respect your craftsmanship. Beautiful!!

What's the brand of crane neck chisels you have? Not sure if I'm naming it correctly.
