    Re: used leather, I wouldn't buy it because it's indirectly increasing demand for leather. Somebody who would otherwise buy a product new, may instead choose to buy it used. But if it's unavailable in a thrift store, they may go and buy it new.

      Also, think the less money a person gets from the thrift shop for their leather wares the better, which is driven by demand also. If the person knows that he can't resell the leather jacket for a good price again, he might not buy it in the first place. It's a long shot, but chimes in with the demand.

    A nutrition analysis video would be AWESOME!! Also people - make sure to eat enough calories always. It doesn't matter how many meals you eat in one day, 1 huge meal or 3 normal meals or 6 smaller meals, please eat enough calories, nutrients and listen to your body/eat intuitively. Plus its definitely the tea and not the lemon water that is making the commenter throw up! I also feel nauseous drinking tea on an empty stomach. Not fun xD another EPIC AMM and so happy to see Crystal... just seems like she gets prettier and prettier every video, seriously GLOWING

    Hey Derek! My wife and I love watching these videos! We are going on our second year being vegan and are raising our 2 year old son vegan as well. You and crystal have been some of the biggest inspirations on our journey! My question is this: When we first went vegan we noticed some awesome changes in our digestion and things were “moving” a lot easier. After about our one year mark, we have noticed that all of our digestion is becoming inconsistent and is not as good as it was when first starting. We have not changed up our diet and if anything eating easier digesting foods. Did you or crystal have this happen to you? If so did it get better? If not do you have any suggestions? Thanks for any info! As always, eat plants!

    You are honestly golden ⭐️, keep blessing the universe with your amazing videos. You promote positivity and a healthy lifestyle without shoving it down peoples throats and I know everyone of your followers appreciate it. Unlike most fitness channels your don’t feed off people’s insecurities and try to make a business out of it, you just do what you do to put a smile on peoples face and help everyone vibrate higher. Thank you Simnett 🙏🏽 for being one of the most authentic UA-camrs in a community of fake ones

    Hey Derek (and Crystal)! I absolutely love your videos. You, Mic. The Vegan, James Aspey and Joey Carbstrong are the four heroes who turned me vegan, and I'm so damn happy I finally did it! About six months with no animal products, and I'm feeling absolutely great. So thanks for the amazing inspiration, the positive vibe in your videos and all the work you put into this. :) I would also really appreciate it if you could make a video with a nutritional breakdown of your WIEIAD videos, as it is super helpful. :) Thanks and keep inspiring people! :)

    Hey guys, I can actually shed some light on the green tea issue as I drink a LOT of tea.
    I drink lemon water then green tea first thing in morning on empty stomach.
    The tea would upset my stomach as well until I learned more about how to brew green tea.
    You don't want to use boiling water. More like 160 to 180 degrees. And you don't want to steep too long.
    I don't steep for more than 1 minute and often times more like 30 secs. You'll be surprised how different (good) it tastes.
    The harder you steep tea, meaning hotter water and longer time, the more you are pulling out of the tea, like those tannins and caffeine, which result in more astringency and bitterness. I have found I enjoy tea better using a higher Tea to water ratio, but shorter steeps. This is referred to as gong fu brewing.
    Great videos, keep em coming!

  • @cyberburnzy
    @cyberburnzy 6 років тому

    The following is related to the low energy question. I found that as I started eating more and more vegan that I had to adapt to complex foods. For example I could only eat a small amount of avocado and hummus or the skin of sweet potatoes gave me a little nausea (I still don't eat the skin). I still only eat about half an avocado per meal and try not to overdue it eating hummus. As you expand your palette you are slowly changing your digestive biome and that can take months to optimize. Also I was influenced by the low carb movement and was afraid to eat too much fruit. Now I eat much more fruit. Fruit that is high in glucose can give you energy fast like grapes, blueberries and dates.

    There have been studies done (in the UK I believe) finding probiotics or "friendly bacteria" in soil that have shown to improve ones mood. I know this to certainly work for me. As someone who favors the natural world, I find great joy and peace when doing things like walking amongst the trees, or planting in the garden. Getting my hands dirty is very calming. I'm a firm believer in the connection between all living things and the earth. Something I feel we once had a greater understanding of, but have since lost as the world becomes more "developed" and driven by technological advances.
    I would also add to the counting your calories question....do an analysis (like you are talking about now to a diff question) Perhaps the gentleman isn't eating a varied diet. Easy to do when you first get away from meat. I know I didn't spend enough time when I went veg way back when. I remember feeling great for a while. but eventually it led me to feeling far more tired sooner in the day. Then I spent a fair bit of time dissecting my diet and figuring out where i was lacking, and what I was eating too much of. Once I made those adjustments, my days became much easier to get through, and I felt soooo much better overall.
    Well said on the comment about leather. I have a few items myself I've had for years. But I don't care to have it. 2nd hand or not.
    Thanks again!

    Hey Crystal and Derek!
    Love your work! I work at a clinic with a naturopath and help guide patients to a more WFPB diet, and the most common reaction we get is "I'd love to but my body CRAVES protein" or "I'd love to but my blood type won't allow it" or "I can't because I'm from the south"
    So my question is, how do you open up the plant-based suggestion to someone even if it's against their own personal beliefs while being respectful and non-judgemental?
    Thanks!!!!☮️

    Guys I legit work at a plant nursery surrounded by a national park... I get paid to working with and pick native plants for people. This "grounding/earthing" does actually work as I feel amazing each day. Thought I should just share :)

  • @Jarisha9
    @Jarisha9 6 років тому

    Earthing can also help rebuild your gut biome (bacteria). Getting bacteria from different types of places helps you get a more diverse biome. Breath in deeply. The 1 cell thick membrane that is the barrier between the blood and biome is actually called the gastro-intestinal membrane and extends into your lungs and sinuses, so breathing deeply brings them into your gut. Dr Zack Bush is really on top of this.

    Yes to nutritional break down of your meals.
    Question for next Ask me Mondays: reconciling being vegan and having to feed cats carnivorous diet. Your thoughts? Wouldn't it fall in the he same category as buying second hand leather stuff? I know cats need meat, however I find it difficult to on one side to preach about animal well-being and knowing animals need to get slaughtered in order for my cat to lead a health live. I'm struggling with this one a bit myself. Thanks.

    #amm Found your channel a week ago. Watched the videos all day. Thanks for the great content. Really loving it! I tried veganism and vegetarianism in my teens but found the social barriers the most difficult to cross, and eventually just stayed omnivorous. Just a few experiences I’ve had that become more complicated because of veganism: business deals, dating, game nights, church activities (where I have to feed people), dinner groups, parties, travel, and much more ... any one of those items could have a series of videos to truly discuss it. I found one video on your channel for “advice to new vegans” but it mostly discussed nutritional considerations. You said in that video you recommend people transition into veganism which I think is wise. But what are the steps? How do I ease my friends and family into my new eating habits without it becoming the topic of discussion every time we are together? Is there a UA-camr out there that has videos that help with all the social transitions of becoming vegetarian or vegan?

    Hey! Love you two. I really liked the point you made about “looking cool in leather” and other people trying to repeat it. I’ve always worn leather belts that I buy at goodwill or secondhand but I’d never considered your view on it. I will definitely keep it in mind. I also didn’t know that consuming too much protein as a macro nutrient turns to fat or that green tea on an empty stomach can cause it to be upset. I always learn from your videos. Thank you ❤️

    A shopper at Whole foods today was telling me that I need to be sure to really watch my protein if I do fruitarian. I told the person, protein has been the problem all along!! I had too much of it. High carbs of fruits and veggies feels so much better. Yes, I'm proof too much protein turns to fat. It's true!! I also read that when you get too much protein, you will see bubbles in your urine. My question is though, does it matter if it's plant based protein? You can get too much of plant based protein also, right?? Thanks

    Just wanted to say that having green tea (or coffee) with meals isn't good for iron absorption! It inhibits it, and many girls have issues with iron already so I try to consume that type of drinks 1-2 hours before or after meals to optimise nutrient absorption :) love your vids!

    Im a big tea drinker and its not unusual for me to get nausea if i drink too much or too strong tea in too short intervals, especially on an empty stomach. Never happened with coffe though, but if you like to AVOID vomiting, the solution is to chug water as quickly as you notice. In that way it settles quickly for me and i think its because the tea in the stomach gets diluted enough.

    Hey Derek I got some questions for you for your next AMM.
    1. Have you tried doing really slow pullups/chinups to see how they effect gains?
    2. Do you ever worry about not eating enough, not getting enough nutrients, or not working out enough to maintain your gains?
    I been doin 100 pullups then doing another 30 to 40 at half the speed and have seen some strength improvements in the little time I've tried it. Id say the slow ones take at least 10 second round trip. Thanks for your insight Derek!

    I love OMAD! I usually eat 1 3hour extended meal from like 5 - 8 pm during the work week then on weekends I don't fast. As long as I eat the right foods and eat as much as I can I can build muscle while doing OMAD. Sometimes I go back to not fasting and I get tired spells/sugar crashes during the day. And I can get away with eating a bit more 'crappy' foods when I'm too lazy to cook something, but healthy clean whole foods is always the goal! 💪

    Hello Derek (and Crystal)! I've been watching your "What I Eat in a Day" videos, and realised that usually you uses to eat the first meal as a smoothie, lunch more like legumes or tofu, tempeh with a huge salad, and dinner with potatoes with salads. I've seen you talking about heaving some digestion problems in the past (which I really understand, as a poor digestion kind of guy). Do you feel better this way. Is that the way that you've found to a better digestion?
    Congratulations for the great work you are doing. Inspiring so much, so many people around the world.

    I would like Crystal's response, if possible: have you heard from many women about losing their periods on a plant-based diet, or have you experienced this? I have heard this a lot recently as an argument against plant-based diets. It didn't happen to me, but it seems pretty common.
    I always look forward to sitting down with a healthy snack for AMMs... Thank you for being such healthy, positive role models!

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  6 років тому

      Crystal here. I think it a common issue not matter what diet, but plant based diets tend to be lower in calories over all which can lead to weight loss/low body fat which is the reason one would lose their period. Yes, I have lost my period before.. it happened about 3 years ago. I was quite lean and used chaste tree berry tincture to help bring it back (I do not use it anymore). Now I track my cycle and it has normalized and I have not lost it since. The more research I do on menstrual cycle awareness the more I realize hormones and women cycles are such a delicate balance!

    Great video guys! They are extremely helpful. I've been trying to change up my diet since I just found out I might have leaky gut. Not only do I suffer from those symptoms, but I began having Alopecia Areata on my head and two small spots in my beard. It's been tough. I've always been super healthy, workout all the time, but for the past 4 months I kind of slip and started hanging with the crowd of friends that drink.. a lot. However, I started cut back on the drinking & unhealthy eating and instead, started consuming much of what you make! It's been delicious! But my question is, what are the pros and cons of consuming a glass of red Malbec wine every few days?

  • @Goofygreyhoundgoober
    @Goofygreyhoundgoober 6 років тому

    Most of the stuff you hear about peeing out protein comes from peeing out the ammonia (converted to urea/uric acid) as the protein is metabolised and the carbon chains etc are burned as a source of fuel. Protein in urine is a sign of kidney failure and is referred to as “proteinuria”, just as glucose in the urine is a sign of diabetes (or kidney failure but hey)
    Another great AMM, thanks guys!! 😊 I like the Derek crystal combo 😄

I am a marathon runner and just avid runner overall. I do use protein powder for shakes and smoothie bowls (absolutely love!) but, i was wondering, being a runner that isn't looking for gaining a lot of muscle mass and instead, more of a lean, cut look, should i continue to use the powders or focus just on my protein intake coming from plant sources?? About the question on lacking energy on a vegan diet, it can be many factors, most likely it's the one answered on the video. On other instances, some people may be eating enough calories but their metabolism is really fast, since a plant based diet is not as dense as animal products, it digests and metabolizes faster, so an increase on calories could help. Also, many people completely change their eating habits when going vegan. Maybe before they ate a lot of junk food or sugary food, mostly foods that would cause a huge spike on insulin levels, or even a lot of caffeine, then when they transitioned into veganism they started eating more whole foods, therefore the "lack of energy" may actually mean that the body is going through a detox and actually getting used to not having those extra energy boosts from caffeine and sugar. :)

I’ve struggled a lot with intestinal upset since going vegan 6 months ago. Lentils, beans, kale, Brussel sprouts, broccoli etc all cause a lot of problems and I don’t want to cut so many nutritious things out of my diet! Hi Derek & Kristel; THANKS for answering my Q about OMAD! Wish I had made thát comment a bit shorter & to the point;)) I definitely see my body getting leaner (though that´s not at all my goal) What ís my goal = the growth hormone production increase and from what I´ve heard so far; muscle gáins instead of muscle lóss when you keep working out hardcore. I also usually eat a looot and I also looove food just like you;) - large breakfast; small lunch & big dinner.. - Now with this OMAD thing I dó actually feel that my digestion has improved; I´d say I eat what I usually had for breakfast & dinner at once = (big-ass smoothie + big veggie bowl incl. e.g. sweet potatoes, quinoa, avocado, cashew sauce etc. etc.) In Cronometer all that adds up to around 3500-4000 calories ( I don´t trust it a 100% ´cause that seems a lót while the food amount feels pretty normal to me) Keep up the fun Q&A nature walks & enjoy the summer days!

    My grandma was wise beyond years. She told me not to wear synthetics and to walk barefoot in the morning because it reduces the static electricity.
    I thought about it and this is my philosophy on the matter.
    Our brains, operate the rest of our body with electrical impulses. Our cells communicate with electrical charges. If we are carrying a lot of static charge, it interferes with cell communication. Also can interfere with mood, which interferes with hormones...bad cycle.

    Hey guys! Love all the vidz! you both inspire me to live a healthier life style! My question... maybe for a #AMM is... have you ever thought of making a meal prep video? I’m a super busy Dad who struggles with having healthy Plant based meals on hand and sometimes I have to resort to eating out. Any advice is appreciated! Keep up the great work!

      I do not meal prep so wrapping my head around what I would make is difficult. I don't know what stays fresh or goes soggy, etc. and would not want to make a video for people to copy only for the food to not last long enough, know what I mean!? The pressure! haha

    #AMM What do you think about the link between gout, purine and a plant-based diet? I have been diagnosed with gout, which I am determined to beat. I eat a lot of moderate purine food such as mushrooms, lentils and soy, which I'm not going to change. I do drink quite a bit and eat nutritional yeast by the bucketful - so that has to change!
    Also, I'd like to say thanks. I was following the Reddit's Recommended Routine for callisthenics (usually 3 sets of 8 per exercise) without making any progress, and after recovering from a shoulder injury, I decided to follow your advice and go until failure. Now I'm doing between 40 - 60 push-ups and dips, and about 20 pull-ups! So thanks, love the channel and your positivity!

    Hi Derek, I've just started watching your channel after going vegan around 2 months ago! Thank you so much for all your helpful advice :) I'm just wondering if you or Krystal have any suggestions on how to combat bloating as mine doesn't seem to be going away. Does that mean my digestion is poor? It's especially bad after eating oats in the morning

    Hey, Derek. Thanks again for another great video. I find the question about buying second-hand leather intriguing. Why is it that the first person to buy a leather product is contributing to animal suffering but then the second, third, fourth etc person to buy it second-hand is somehow absolved from it? Does it really matter that they are recycling it? If someone buys a leather jacket but then decides they don't like it and sell it to one of their friends, does that really make a difference? That's a very specific example, but I think there is alot to consider with this issue.

    #AskMeMonday Hi guys! I hope you answer my question... I got a juicer a couple of months ago, I've been experimenting a lot with it, very slowly as I have a very sensitive stomach and I don't want to ruin my day while trying to be healthier... A few weeks ago I found some recipes for ginger shots, they ask for the juice of a whole lemon with some ginger, I tried it once (but not at the beginning of the day on an empty stomach like I was supposed to) and I loved the flavor, no upset stomach like I was expecting. This is the first time I hear about lemon having a negative effect in the body, I always thought lemon was 100% safe, same with ginger, so why not combine them in this quick, strong, beverage? would you recommend this?? what are your thoughts??? And yeah we want to see you on a skate video! you have style on that board!! :)

    So processed sugar is bad, but the sugar in fruit isn't due to it being bound by fibre. Sometimes when I make a smoothie the berries I use are very bitter and I don't have any bananas to sweeten it. Is there any difference between using berries that are sweet to using sour ones and adding some sugar?
    Thanks for all your videos, keep up the good work!

    Regarding protein and kidneys. If I remember correctly, in Dr Gregers book he states that animal protein places more pressure on the kidneys however this was not shown to happen in research on protein from plants

    Great job, as always! Love when you're both in the video - no offense to you of course, but you can't deny Crystal bumps up the quality ;) My question is around the Beyond Meat craze where these vegan burgers actually ooze "blood" (beet juice from what I've read). However, the first couple ingredients seems to indicate a ton of oil, aka fat...bleh! I see this only as contributing to "Fat Vegan Syndrome" lol. What are your thoughts on these types of products versus the traditional bean/grain-based versions?

    Derek, could you expand a little on your training routine (if you have one)? I am doing a mix of calisthenics and weight training but don't want to waste too much time with 'traditional" lifting if I don't have to. I like to be efficient in the gym but some days, I don't have a real plan. Do you do more calisthenics than free weights? Do you follow any splits? Thanks and love these videos!!!

    #AMM Apparently I'm full of questions today. Have you decided whether you would adopt another pet in the future? Adopting from a shelter could save a life but then feeding them (by-products) of animals potentially causes demand. I'm bumping up my dog's intake of whole plant foods so it's on my mind. Dog's #1 killer is cancer and I can't help thinking it's from the highly-processed crap we feed them.

    #AskMeMondays I was wondering a bit about sprouting. I definitely notice the lentils digesting a bit differently, but when I try to check the difference between canned and sprouted lentils on cronometer, the differences seem a bit random. Do you know if there is a better way to compare? Also, do you think it is worth the extra effort to grow sprouts?

    Hey Derek you write in the text that you usually eat 2500 calories per day. Is that around your maintenance then? You also mention “bulking”, what do you increase your calories to during a bulk? And how how long have your bulks been in the past? Thanks

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  6 років тому +1

      I would say maintenance is 2200-2500.. I lose weight pretty easy, it is not easy for me to keep weight on. Bulking would be over 2700-3000 which is hard for me to hit without digestive issues.

    Hey Crystal and Derek! Cool video as always! I was wondering if you followed a rule on when to stop eating fruit during the day. I once heard that it's not good to eat too much fruit (or raw vegetable) for dinner as they will just sit there and "rot" for the night as digestion slows down. Would love to hear your take on this!

    #AMM #AskMeMondays Hi Derek and Crystal! Thanks so much for all your content.
    My question is: around three years ago I began fixing my digestion by cutting out wheat and dairy. I've now been fully vegan for over a year and because my digestion was going so well, I let some wheat back in. Last weekend I took it too far and had some white bread and pasta, which has really messed the whole thing up again. Any tips for a speedy recovery?
