I love how they're grown over the years. I saw them at a small club in Seattle about 15 years ago and I've been a fan ever since. Their sound is so distinctive!
So true! I heard them for the first time back in 2011 thanks to Portal 2 and the song Exile Vilify. Never would've predicted at the time they'd become my favourite band. Or that 11 years on I would *still* feel that same excitement I felt when Trouble Will Find Me came out with each new release. Their earlier albums have aged like fine wine, the new music does not disappoint and it's something that is loved by people of all ages. They really are a timeless band. Edit: Idk if you follow them closely, but they released a single in 2020 called Never Tear Us Apart as well as a song they did for a film named Cyrano (that song being Somebody Desparate). You should give those two a listen if you haven't already! I'm hoping the recent releases mean there's a new album in the works.
Good lord. That moment at the end of the string / guitar crescendo when the piano kicks in and then the female voice comes in. Goosebumps. I honestly like this rendition as much as the studio version.
It’s Alicia Vikander aka Tomb Raider / the robot from Ex Machina on the cover. She appears in their Light Years music video. Really beautiful song as well.
I really like the the guitar and drums in this, most of the non singles are mellow but this one is so quick, the drums played so well it almost doesnt sound right but there is so much energy. the beat is hard to follow but the energy is what holds the song together, the strings help with that too,
I started listening to them about 5 years ago. I have to admit i have maybe less than 10 songs I’m really into but its not so much emphasizing on a single instrument, some bands are big on synth, keys, guitar, bass or drums, they’re more on the melody. There isn’t a single instrument than sticks out with this band to me. It’s how the music mixes together i like the most. The little guitar parts of this song and constant changing drum beats is what i like about this song.
if you close your eyes you can see the montage of tv characters having feelings. this guy got the girl, this girl is alone, these friends are having fun, these friends are mourning, this guy sacrificed love for his career. shower me in clichés, adult contemporary. it's the only way i can calibrate the emotion chip.
The National are the only 2000's band more popular now than they were back then. Arcade Fire, Death Cab, Okkervil River, Deerhunter, Grizzly Bear, Spoon, Decemberists etc., not so much. *btw, I love ALL these bands!
The one in the colorful dress is Mina Tindle also known as Pauline De Lassus. She's Bryce's wife. The one in the black dress is Kate Stables of This is the Kit.
Been to these tapings live. They're in the early afternoon and the audience energy during the musical performances is always embarrassingly low. They aren't encouraged to stand up or get into it and there's a wall of staff in front of them taping the show . Then they're encouraged to applaud as loudly as possible.
thanks again can be interpreted in different ways, but i'm 99% sure he didn't say much better. almost sounds like "thanks for stopping by" but i think it's not that, either.
Although I love the band, I have to say that they are not at their best live. The mix in their live performances is quite often wrong to my ears. They are best enjoyed on vinyl record through a warm amp with a glass of whiskey in one hand - their genius shines then.

It’s actually really funny you mention this on a performance of the most 'different' record they ever made. For the first time ever they had such crucial changes in sound, I‘d say. Female vocals throughout the whole album and different song structures and lyrics due to the collaboration with Mills for the short film.
How do they do it? How do they keep getting better and better?
they've got absolutely different story than the other bands, they're like WINE, older means better!
The National might be the best band in the world right now, seriously
the don't get better and better. high violet was their peak. now they sound mostly generic.
They've done it all, they even snuck in a song in Portal 2 (aka the greatest puzzle game ever made)
I loved this so much. Can't wait for the new album.
I hope I’m as badass as Matt when I get to his age. The man is a legend.
The National get better and better... love this band so much.
damn, it sounds as good as the studio version. or maybe even better.
The National never dissapoint.
@@DJKinneythey didn't say it sounded like it, they said it sounded as good.
Song sounds good until the misdirection about two minutes into the song and then it reaches heavenly heights.

This is in my opinion the best song of the year.
Maravillosos coros, maravilloso todo!
Everything this band releases makes my heart feel like it’s going to explode. I love them so much.
Can't wait for the whole album!!
The female singer’s dress looks like the album cover to Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers.
that's actually Bryce's wife Pauline de Lassus (also known as Mina Tindle)!
Sara Dal Savio Wow that’s cool!!
"Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers" - Thank you Thomas Doyle. You are blessed with wit and creativity...

No camera on Bryan so can't see the beast-like drumming. Love the bridge redirection in this song.
But who is the other drummer??

Trying to choose between The National and Vampire weekend for a concert. Thinking I'll do both. 😊
Interesting that you say this, because after the first few bars of this performance, I said this sounds similar to Vampire Weekend.
Both would be the only appropriate way to go! Yea, gotta do both
If I had to choose, I'd go National, but VampWeek certainly isn't a bad choice, either.
Just went to The Nationals concert in Columbus. Absolutely worth it!!
Matt with a haircut is the best Matt
Long hair ElVy Matt is the best Matt ;)
Paul S Boxer era Matt is my fave
Future bionic Matt with velociraptor legs for patrol and pursuit in the green wastes is best Matt.
Huge nice perform of my favourite band of US
❤️ The National ❤️
I am really looking forward to this album! They sound really good!
The pride of Cincinnati.
God, The National + a string quartet. Could it be any better?
Yeah. They could play a good song. This song has no melody or feeling. You can't make a song good by piling more instruments on top of it.
Guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. Peace!

Hi Late Show. Looks like you accidently posted the performance that was cut. They did it a second time and it sounded better.

twin firebirds
Not just Firebirds, but non reverse ‘birds😀
