Only complaint about this tune is that the beautiful, heart wrenching guitar lick and instrumental coda at the end only goes on for like a measure before the song ends. I need that to go on forever please. One measure doesn’t cut it. Please. Thank you.
@@georgeb.wolffsohn30 One, i was being facetious. Two, how did you count 28 bars from the beginning of the solo to the end, when it's 16 (in 4/4). And three, maybe i should have been more specific because apparently "instrumental" wasn't specific enough? Maybe my theory is a little rusty, but I was referring to the very end, after the vocals cut out, they play for a whopping 4 bars starting on the 1 and ending on the 1. But whatever.
@@gfunkgadanko5703 first, I made an assumption based on the drummer's playing. Next I listened several times to hear when the guitar emerged from the background. After that I simply counted : 1 2 3 4, 2 2 3 4, . . . Etc. Till the end of the piece. I must admit I may be off by a few bars, but I think I'm in the neighborhood. Anyway, it's substantially more than one bar.
George B. Wolffsohn I see. But if you count from the beginning of the guitar lick at 3:18 that’s where I came up with 16. And again, the part I’m most enamored with is right after the vocals stop and the lick continues for one progression. I just wish it was longer.
not every indie band that breaks it into a bit popularity is sellout or commercial garbage, so to y'all edgelords The National has been consistent in their aesthetics and sensibilities, they've been around for almost two decades and their UA-cam channel has only 250K followers, the point: they're not a corporate product they're true to their art and their fans and if they get a bit popular don't be jealous because many Indieheads often complain that their favorite artists aren't getting the attention they deserve. love and peace
I've VERY partial to this song....my only son is named Rylan. I'll always like this song, but I will say that the prior version of it that they did was better. Not quite crazy about how they changed it for this album. Particularly just the musical arrangement...the female voices don't bother me, just more of how they took out a lot of the guitar rifts, which were such a great part of the song. You only hear that at the very end now. Also weird that they changed some of the words, still sounds strange to hear "if you wanna be alone, come with me" when that was never in the song for years. Whatever though, love the band. New album doesn't have quite the slow simmer to a boil moments that I love, but I'm sure it will grow on me like all of their previous albums have.
I thought they were supposed to perform "I am Easy to Find?" Still love this too though. Rylan is definitely one of top 4 songs from the new album IMO.
Coffee And A Book that’s because mike mills discouraged the use of guilted across the record. I believe he was quoted saying “this is your chance to do something else” as in move away from guitars. He also objected to the original long outro, because it’s supposed to be a “sad” song. That’s why the guitar is much more prominent on earlier love versions, and it’s kinda sad because I feel the studio version doesn’t hit as hard :(
@@mikekasabion Ah, that's interesting didn't know that. I don't actually dislike how the guitar sounds on the album version honestly, just think it's a bit low here. And I do appreciate them mixing it up (no pun intended). Besides there's always the KEXP version for an alternative for those that aren't as into this and we all know the live version will evolve as well.
matt mendez Mannnn. I need that outro/coda to go on forever. One measure (or barely)...ahhhh! I need that to play and play. It’s f’ing beautiful and heartbreaking.
Rylan, you should try to get some sun You remind me of everyone Rylan, did you break your mother's heart? Every time you tried to play your part Is it easy to keep so quiet? Everybody loves a quiet child Underwater you're almost free If you wanna be alone, come with me Rylan, we can take the quick way out We can turn blank-white in a blank-white house Say that you're a pervert, you're a vulture Don't you wanna be popular culture? Is it easy to keep so quiet? Everybody loves a quiet child Underwater you're almost free If you wanna be alone, come with me Is it easy to live inside yourself? All the little kids are high and hazy Everybody's got nowhere to go Everybody wants to be amazing Rylan, California's rotten Dress light-blue to be forgotten Eat your pearls on Sunday morning Keep your conversations boring Stay with me among the strangers Change your mind and nothing changes Don't let show any emotion When you climb into the ocean Rylan, you should try to get some sun There's a little bit of hell in everyone Rylan, you should try to get some sun You remind me of everyone Rylan, you should try to get some sun There's a little bit of hell in everyone Rylan, you should try to get some sun
Will they fit on the stage when they come around with their next album? Also I hope Bryce finds a more comfortable way to play his synth! Pretty awesome how they managed to find a way to do something so different.
I Am Easy To Find is my favorite National album because of its powerful emotional moments. That being said, it's probably not their best album (that would be Trouble or Boxer).
The new album is so good that it made me go back and relisten to trouble will find me, which I always thought of as a high violet retread and sort of boring, and now I love it as much as the other records. The first two and sleep well beast lag a little behind for me right now
They're all pretty dang emotional at parts.. he writes about real life and it's emotions in that period. It its more "cinematically" emotional tho, which is why it made it such an amazing soundtrack, which is why it was made! If you didn't see the movie yet, it's gna change your life! Same name as the album, only 25 mins
They're twins silly man.. and literal music savants. Modern day Mozarts. Dudes are composers.. One just wrote and played with Thom Yorke(Radiohead) for his shows in France that's a whole orchestra.. Dude has a band with Justin Vernon(Bon Iver), Surfjan Stevens, produce.. they're insane. And identical 😜
This song is the 'best gay anthem' ever. Appropriate lyrics, desire to runaway of the old self and break free shouting the truth to the world. And even if it is not intended to be a gay anthem, it is for me.

“Under water you’re almost free”...just touched places I didn’t know I had...always The National..
New Album is sublime I cant get it out of my head....
I can't believe I'm saying this but the new album is now my favorite National album. It is sublime.
Coruscating album , have they ever released a track as sublime as "oblivions " extraordinary music and oh so subtle
Matt shared the microphone with my daughter during this song at the Columbus 2019 show. Such an awesome moment for both of us!!
I love how much the violin player is into this, great to see.
The new album is just excellent.
Isaac The Fallen Apple agreed!
euphoric and endearing!
I wasn't into it until I started seeing live performances, it's like they figured it out, got all the jitters gone
Even this version, he's hesitant, like he's holding back
The National never fail to impress.
Wow the music is excellent 💯. Mature and pleasant. Enjoy the vocal. Btw this is the first time I heard their music. Love💘 this type of music.
Edwina Godwin definitely check them out.
You are in luck they have quite a few albums!
Gotta get into their entire library! 💕👍Love The National !
Rylan will get A LOT of sun from now on
lol
Love The National! Amazing performance. As expected
Also, the brunette backing singer is just gorgeous. Is that Kate Stables/This Is The Kit? I’m just floored by her voice and beauty and skill.

That's often the way with some bands. Swans tracks are almost always better live, for instance.
