I play this every morning, just before I wake up.
I tried to play this, when I was sleeping. I couldn't
Your dreams are living in a fantasy world.
You need big brain and Big PP to understand this LOL
Hahaha
The original though is manageable.
When I was young I wanted to play the guitar so badly, after years and years of hard work and dedication I can play the guitar badly
perfect
HAHAHA!
You da man..
At least you are honest.ha ha
You dont need to master an instrument to grasp its potential and use it to create something new. If you can play 3 chords youre fine. Dont compare to people which dedicated way more time into it. Its ok to be mediocre in technique when you put your heart and mind to it ;)
He’s not playing the guitar. He’s telling it what the f**k to do and it’s listening.
The man is genius and he’s a great person. A winning combo!
I know that's right. I've watched so much of Tommy and I just might have figured it out. Well, not quite. But, progress anyway...
Got to see him live. Amazing musician
> He’s telling it what the f**k to do and it’s listening.
I agree, but I'm not so fond of that sort of relationship
Love your comment. 100% true.
💥 With this talent where is he?
The harmonic “bend” at 3:18 and then going right back into jamming is one of the coolest licks ever played in the history of guitar
I learned how to do that from seeing Nuno Bettencourt do it at the end of "More Than Words." Probably not something you want to do all the time, unless either a) you have a guitar tech, or b) you can do your own truss rod adjustments. But it sure as hell does sound cool.
I ended cracking up the neck one time cuz i use that lick daily after seeing this video a long time ago ❤
What amazes me more is that he did this while his left leg ran a half marathon
🤣🤣🤣🤣
He was/is a drummer also. That's how he keeps time.
This made me LOL
His guitar probably ran more marathons than his leg did
His left leg acts as a metronome, same thing drummers do
I come here whenever I think I'm getting good at guitar.
It’s better to watch really good players because it pushes you to be better. If you were better then everyone you watched you would have no drive to improve. Now you do

Bahahaha
I dedicated MONTHS to learning this song a few years ago. And while I technically could play it, I didn't understand what was going on musically. It was basically just a party trick. I had no way to translate the practice into anything else. I also realized I still didn't sound nearly as good as Mr. Emmanuel here because I lacked something crucial that I never considered. Dynamics. I was only focused on playing the right notes on time and never had any real feeling behind what I was playing. In short it just sounded boring. It's amazing how you can improve your own playing in ways you didn't expect just by hearing the greats play. I'll never be better than Tommy, but I can be better than I was last week.
I felt exactly like this when I learned Tommy's song Blood Brother. Then I started to become picky about every detail, how I hold the pick, where on the string I strike, how fast and hard to strike the chords and strings, vibrato etc... It makes all the difference
Well said.
Yeah, stage one is to just memorize the 5million-note sequences. The dynamics will usually bring themselves in unconsciously over time, after you've gotten comfortable with not having to constantly think about where your hand has to be next.
It carries over into other songs, though, for sure. You learn something that tough and then go back and play an easy song you know, and you'll play the easy one 10× smoother than before
I guarantee you couldn't play this song. The ego on you. Post it
I think you really nailed it. I am deeply impressed by the dynamics AND feeling all through this rendition of a beloved piece!!!
So... I heard this on American dad, and I honestly thought it was cut together from random classical pieces for the show. Was not aware someone actually was capable of playing this. Mind sufficiently blown. Incredible!
I still prefer Mason Williams acoustic version but this guy is amazing!

I was lucky enough to have a jam with him in the early 90's when I was a work experience kid at his manager's music shop in Melbourne. Just the two of us in a rehearsal room, with two cheap acoustic guitars. I'll never forget it. Such a nice guy, he spent over half an hour of his time teaching me a few riffs and showing just how beyond skilled he is. I performed "guitar boogie" in a school concert later that year and could actually say "Tommy taught me that bit". 😎
I knew an old man taught music in inner city 1 dollar 2 hours bring your kid and their instrument. He did not have the focus on guitar this man does but he had the same sort of gift. With almost any instrument.
On today's episode of things that never happened
@@c.jarmstrong3111 how are you going to say it never happen? sure he took time throughout his career to sit down and give spontaneous lessons every now and then
@Flux Incapacitator I'm more inclined to believe a nice thing happened over someone making up a bizarre and intricate lie for fake Internet points.
John Martinez That’s called an argument from incredulity. Simple because you cannot understand why someone would lie for clout, this holds no bearing on whether the original statement is true or false.
While most guitar players tune their guitars to the standard E A D G B E, Tommy tunes his to W T F H O W.

I watch this about once a year, thinking as I get better at guitar it will make more sense. But honestly, the more I understand what he's actually doing here the more impressive and unbelievable it gets.
I've been binge watching for 2 weeks
The impressive stuff is the dexterity he has as well as the ability to create good beats and dynamics, the actual song itself is just an A minor riffing.
Just started playing last year. This confounds me how a human can rip up a instrument like this.
I bet he's got a guitar luthier oncall.
@@SuperBroncosguy lol!!
That's exactly why I'm here. Once again brother. Respect
From my understanding, this version of Classical Gas took Tommy Emmanuel years to learn how to play. This is legendary talent we are watching. Please take the time to appreciate it.
I dont think years, maybe some month
I doubt he "learned" to play it. He probably started with a simple arrangement and kept expanding it and developed an expanded piece over time as he got bored with the way he could already play it like a machine. How would he learn to play something that he arranged? He just slowly expanded the arrangement most likely. Just helps that he is a monster player haha.

He is having fun with something he loves to do. Stop bashing him, I personally think it was amazing and had a nice twist to it, you people act like the song will never be the same. Get over yourselves.
Thank you. Well said.
While I agree that it was some amazing guitar work, and Tommy is talented, I think you are understating the significance of what he did when you called it a nice "twist". This isn't a "twist" at all, it's a completely different song. Sure it has some of the same notes, but the feeling of the song, the soul of it, is far removed from the original. I, personally, would of felt better if he renamed it and put an "inspired by Classical Gas" subtitle. I say this because i was searching for Classical Gas, clicked on this video because it looked interesting and polished, and get this jarring, completely unexpected piece. It was a lot like drinking what I though was soda, and it's lemonade. Lemonade isn't bad, just so unexpected it almost hurts.
aggreedd..!!!
Stephen Bridgland Wrong. Every great musician has used excerpts from other song references. Same with Mason Williams' Classical Gas. You may have heard of it.. :)

It doesn't work that way. As the talented musician improves, their standards go up. They are never fully satisfied with their playing. Only mediocrities are satisfied with their playing.

Yeah I've seen him live . And I agree i was amazed at the sheer quantity of this guy i first saw him on a guitar teaching lesson on video and just had to get tickets when he showed up in England
A lot of people talk about how incredible a guitarist he is and he certainly is that, but the thing I’m most impressed with is his control. That man knows every square nanometer of that neck and that’s why he’s playing is so clean. I’m in awe of that guy’s control.
u speak as if ur first argument doesn't go along with the second argument dude
Midnight Austin The difference is execution. It’s one thing to have a great, unique sound and being able to play it well. Jimmi Hendrix had a unique sound and style, but his playing was incredibly sloppy. Tommy Emmanuel may not have a super unique sound, but his execution is flawless.
@Andrew Atwill Valid point Andrew! Many would think "after" 50 years of playing he is this good..as an aussie..i know for a fact when he was just 19/21 he sounded the exact same.....
This is a natural communication for him why should he control it.
i hear you havner. not just his control of the neck but his thumb keeping that bassline as he strums individual notes on the top 3 strings, it's just something that i know i couldn't do even after years of dedication. too late for me!
The thing that I continue to marvel at is how Tommy plays with such passionate fluidity. I get to a point where I think I'm playing pretty well, and then I hear him. Suddenly I sound like a mentally challenged feral cat clumsily trying to dance on top of a banjo.

I need to expand my horizons. I have been listening and searching for great music for 55 years, and I just found this guy. This just goes to show you that when you think you have heard the best, you have not. What a talent!
Me too! And we have.
Me too, just a very slightly longer time frame, and with rap, most heavy metal and most country being exceptions, here are TONS of excellent musicians out there. I listen to primarily Jazz and classical now, but here is some stuff in various categories, genres, instruments, etc. that you might enjoy. I can give you a LOT more if you are interested, as I spend WAYYY too much time on YT now, and have a whole slew of artists in my playlist (it's public feel free to look if you like some of these). It includes many more categories and artists than these. These range from (criminally) couple of thousand views types, into the millions level. Virtually all of these artists do several types of music. Here, from solo to big band, and world touring to virtually unheard:
Synth, real time expansive improv covers, listen to a requested song, first hearing when they request it if he doesn't know it, on a stupid phone, and instantaneously makes some INCREDIBLE music out of it, five seconds or less later (the first is a ten level deep loop) created on the spot. I gave you two very different approaches, from the same video, the second is just a non looped piano invention of another request. This guy is an absolutely world class talent. His channel has gone from the 70 or so thousand to now half million and climbing RAPIDLY, and he actually deserves it, like Tommy.
Frank Tedesco: He wrote a few compilations, not really slottable into a single genre lots of influences, jazz, Spanish, classical, movie, game, etc. In the first I put you in where he's listening to the song, so you can see what he's working from, and what results. Just stop at the end of the song and then go to the next, unless you want to listen to the whole video :-):

Fifth Street: Fairly Odd Parents (they do all kinds of Jazz oriented covers)
Home Free: Most anything of theirs, this is fun, a sea shanty mix up, listen to the beat boxer on the one that starts "Heave her up and away we'll go ...". He is the best in the world, IMO at actually doing it VERY musically. He does an air drumming solo that is incredible, and he plays the drums along with it, accurately.

Got To Get You Into My Life". Jazz knob turned up about 75%, this arrangement has some really great sections, as most all of theirs do. And the treble section is stellar. When the alto gets low, it's like being wrapped in a soft blanket, what a sound, and the soprano enters the stratosphere a couple of times. She can go a lot higher, I think, IIRC, but she's getting up there pretty good here:

Here's a couple of semi Big Band pieces. The first is Dave Wekl and Jay Oliver drumming with a host of instrumental and vocal session folks (I think). The energy in this thing starts at the ceiling and then rises like a homesick Martian:

This is a Ukrainian/Russian group that does Chicago, better than Chicago, IMO. They didn't even speak English when this was done, and the diction is better than most of the English speaking soloists I've heard. They tour the world now. One of the band members recorded and mixed this. I would love to find a DVD A level flac of it. It sounds spectacular even on the YT garbage audio format. I think one reason i like this more than Chicago is the recording. After this, go play the Chicago recording, and you'll see what I mean. Night and day, the old recording is absolutely dull by comparison. Thirty years of tech doesn't hurt, but neither does a guy that keeps the post effects to nothing to next to nothing, and lets the music through. And uses some killer audio equipment.

@@cap6159 - David Gilmour? He's great at what he does, but he's not in this league. Plus, you didn't even spell his name right. Chet Atkins and Django Reinhardt come to mind as great acoustic guitarists, but Tommy's hard to beat.
Easy there.
Don’t the point of ranking guitarists. It’s art, not the olympics.
he covered roger smiths guitar piece with perfection!!
You get the drift, I win.
And he didn't need to sell his soul to the devil to do it (I assume).
@@fredbloggs8072 He loans the talent for the Faustian bargains, it has to come from somewhere.
The original sounds like music. This is too many notes. Hard to say if the original sold his soul. Any proof?
Tommy was child prodigy. He can play ANYTHING he hears. He is a one in a hundred million. Not many like him come this way. I am proud of the fact I shook his hand at the Perth Airport late one night in Western Australia. It was funny and cool. He was bending down picking up his guitar case at the luggage courosel, we had both arrived on the same late night flight from Sydney. And I walked up to him and put out my hand and said "I love you man, you're amazing" He shook my hand and said, "Thanks, I love you too man." I think he was a bit taken aback as I am a pretty large guy and he might have been a bit defensive as I approached, but as he looked up at me I could see he was appreciative that a fan had simply come over to say hi. He is a legend.
What's so funny is that he's pretty much an unknown legend here in the USA. I've been loving him for years but none of my guitar enthusiast friends know who he is, which I find quite shocking. Fortunately, I got to see him live around five years ago here in Chicago. I'd say he's still probably in the top 4-5 guitarists in the world....at least. Incredibly warm guy who brings tons of joy to people's lives.
I randomly met him in an airport in Oregon. He was so kind and asked me about my guitar, he could tell it was lattice bracing right away... I was so impressed with his kindness and generosity of spirit. He got me tickets to his show the next night and it was one of the best concerts I've ever experienced.
ayokay123 I think his obscurity is a result of the fact he does not sing. He does not fit any cookie cutter mold of rock stardom here in america.
@@victormainguitar I saw him first time 2004. in Pula (Croatia)The first tune was total shock for audience. After this "knock out", I sow him few more times in Zagreb.Next day, after the gig, he gave free guitar lectures for everyone who is interesting in guitar playing. It tooks 6 hours!
He is awesome talent, and more importand, WONDERFULL PERSON!
Beautifull free spirit, with mission in this world.
Long live, Tommy Emmanuel!
by saying 1 in a 100 million that really means that theres 80 people like him its one in 8 billion
"You get the drift. I win." 😂
“Then it’s a deal…”
Arrrrrghhh….!!!🔥🔥🔥
Hahaha i’m so glad someone else knew where the original was after watching the episode 😂
Get clapping cuz it’s over. 💅
Listen buddy you clearly won, but I reallllyyy need this gig 😩
I swear they used this version too 🤣
The fact this is so aggressive yet so clean is impossible to me. How tf does he nail every single note and make the whole thing so fkn clear. Sounds like 3 guitars at once all playing their parts precisely at the correct volume
You should listen to him play Blue Moon, he plays the drum, bass, rhythm, and lead parts on a single guitar at the same time.
Thats the weird thing about Tommy. He always plays electric with this light delicate touch.
But the acoustic's... he bashes and whacks them like they pissed on his vegetables
Understand this guy has had decades of experience playing and mastering this instrument... it is essentially an extension of his body at this point. This is what is called mastering guitsr
Crunchu with out a doubt there ain’t a truer statement. Did you see how natural that acoustic neck/headstock vibrato was? Every movement from this man is fluid art. Even his seemingly random movement manner, all those body taps are perfect timed. I imagine his dance he’s got going on is because I’m his head he hears the flow like it’s an extension of his soul.
he has been playing guitar his entire life man, don't compare urself now to with his plying, just keep plying this song over and over and u can get close
What a machine. I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of practice this man has put in through his life.
And he still can not make it sound like music.
Can't imagine a 'serious' artist having that much fun at 'work.' What pleasure to watch and listen to.
The difference between a job and a career
I've met and worked with Tommy a few times. You'll never meet a more kind and laid-back musician.
And an incredibly humble and nice guy to boot. Just a joy to meet and talk to.
The way he bends his guitar to make that sound always blows my mind. So much talent.
And this might just be the easiest part!
0:00 I'm gonna learn this
0:01 fuck.
Fucking gold
+Shaohan8 made my day, thanks :)
😂😂best youtube comment I've ever read!
best comment ever.
+Shaohan8 ahahahahahah exactly ahahahha
He’s not just playing Guitar, he’s feeling it… *and it responds.*
He's not just playing with his hands; he plays with his all.
Hi Tommy, everytime I see and hear you playing the guitar you make me so happy. A few years ago I saw you performing in Hoorn in the Netherlands, that was one of my finest experiences. I'm a guitarplayer myself for more than fifty years and still do recordings as a guitarist / arranger and producer, mostly on my electric self made guitar. I know I never can reach your fabulous technique but that makes no difference for me. I love the instrument the guitar from the age of 9 years old and really have deeply respect for you as a guitarist but surely as a very nice person talking with everybody who loves the guitar. Hope to enjoy many years of your guitar playing and that you can do that in good health. Regards, Bart van der Post.
STUDIOBASE you know he died, right !?
***** I must have confused him with someone else my bad.....
My guitar just stared at me from across the room with a raised eyebrow, clipped its own strings, and walked back into the case...maybe we will talk tomorrow...I will give it some time.
You just made me spit out my whiskey... hysterical.
😅😂🤣
My guitar just laughed out loud
Same here. I'm going to miss that guitar
My guitar is chuckling on its stand in the corner lmao
My late mother played guitar and I loved when she practiced at night. She use to listen to a local guitar station and I loved it when they played this song. I get chills every time I hear this and I'm reminded of her. Acoustic guitar is just beautiful and it brings back memories of her playing. Love you Mom.
Dear TE, CGP: Thank you for sharing your gift. Thank you for acknowledging your mentor Chet Atkins. What a constant delight you are. Blessings. RIP Phil. Hope to see you in concert again. Always a joy. When you take the stage I need nothing more. Your fingers fly. Time flies. Best complete entertainer.
I'm not biased (not much) ;)
You continue to change lives for the better. 🎶
I’m so fortunate to have seen Tommy multiple times. Thank you for the love you show to East Tennessee, Tommy!
🙂
this video is my paradox it makes me want to give up on learning but also motivates the heck out of me
never give up on learning
You know, it’s rare to see a savant in any genre during a lifetime. This is by far the best mastery of a guitar I’ve ever scene at least in my lifetime.
Different vein, but my current favorite is Luca Stricagnoli. Check his stuff out!
What gets me is how open and resonant a sound he can get and then instantly cut it all off and then bring it back faster than I can blink. It's always great to see someone at this level apply their art.
This will never get old it's one of the top music player
Tommy playing that guitar to within an inch of its life.
He is a god. It's all without second guessing, absolute control and no mistakes. Very few are as or will ever hope to be this good.
It’s probably not the first take and if he did make a mistake how would you know when it is his arrangement of classical gas
He’s probably played that an insane amount of times
I swear when I will be this good before I turn 30 in 12 years I will post a cover of this
But we can try.
@@carsonthompson8637 you've probably taken a dump thousands of times and yet you still need to wipe your ass every time? Can we not just appreciate raw talent when we see it?
The way he nonchalantly hits those harmonics really kills me.
Thanks Tommy for producing these. I can climb out of my 'news hole' and get my peace of mind back.
There is no lingual expression to describe this extraordinary, utter madness.
chemicalmix tenes razon.
Well said. Profound. This could save the world.
Id say one of the few comparisons of similar genius would be Robin Williams stand up comedy
Obviously the playing is out of this world, but it’s also impressive that the guitar he plays is able to stay in tune despite him playing with so much force.
Its a Maton..... Australian made. been around since the late 60's. They are a beautiful instrument with an unsurpassed ring to them. And the no1 sign of any quality guitar, is that they require alot less tuning adjustment. ( imho )
We went to see Tommy in concert at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds yesterday! Absolutely phenomenal! If you get a chance to see him live grab the chance you will not regret it!
Can confirm. Nothing but joy from him at all points.
My ex-husband and I saw him in a town hall in the bush, more than 30 years ago. Just him, his instruments, a microphone and an amp. The first tune left me awestruck; beside me, my ex, who was learning guitar at the time, had tears running down his cheeks. We knew we were in the presence of a Master.
@@Mirrorgirl492 Hi - my son saw a UA-cam video recently and it moved him to tears too! We have never seen or heard anything that has left us both so emotional and in awe! Take care x
Can confirm. What an artist's artist.
Saw him at the Perth Concert Hall last night. Been going through a rough patch, now feel 100% better and ready to go.
So, back in the early 80's I would go to the East Melbourne hotel on a Thursday night to see the Emanuel brothers play. Phil and Tommy. It was always a gas. Between the comedy and the double up playing on one guitar and the more serious? stuff. We always made it a regular and the whole crew had a blast. Strength to strength mate. Still got that expression of love on ya face and enjoying any and every moment. Cheers
Had backstage passes and spent 30 min with Tommy. He was the picture of grace and kindness to everyone. There was a 10 year old kid with a bad ukulele that he spent 15 min with helping him understand his possible future , then completed wailed on his dime store uke. He is Aces and a very cool Dude. Thats unusual.
Merci
Time to quit guitar.
That's so awesome. I've been wanting to meet him for year. There's no finer player on Earth than Tommy in my opinion
A nice soul is a nice soul 😁

I have been playing guitar two weeks now, after I tried playing for 6 months over a decade ago and gave up... I don't want to give up this time, but I confess that my left index finger is swollen and tender, my fingertips now feel weird, and it feels like I am advancing very slowly. My respect to all great guitar players out there, just amazing. It really takes dedication.
Hang in. You have your own message to share. 🎼💐🎶🦋
Every guitar fights through the pain, because we aint pussyo’s. Play long enough, you wont feel any pain in your fingers trust me.
[Simply Guitar]
I tried to play like all my idols for years and years.
I stopped doing that and just focused on what I wanted to convey. Passion beats speed every day.
Think of music as a language, every note is a word. Or rather the feeling you get from saying that word. Now string all your words into sentences. Bend and slide and mute them as you would change the tone of your voice. ❤️❤️ Fun fact. If you slightly bend every note you can bypass the restrictions of the frets and be able to play a lot more freely in between the notes. Or use a slide.
I hope you stuck with it man!
Hope you're still playing. Even 5 months is not that long to have been playing, but even 5 years is not that long in the grand scheme of things. Music is a lifelong pursuit.
Probably the best fingerstyle guitar piece/performance ever
NR Awesome check out Nayuta by Kotaro Oshio.
How about best anystyle guitar piece performance ever?
I'm not sure I've seen more enjoyable playing in my life.... I truly feel like this man knows magic.
Tommy's guitar went to rehab after this. Massive sound overload.
and it threw up xD
How many times do I have to (re-) watch it? Its like a drug. You get a rush listening, watching. One of my favorite videos of all time.
the thumb is still doing my head in :o how the hell did he do that ? moved 3 frets but the thumb stayed like it was stuck on the neck ,totally fantastic
+mcfcguvnors i just saw that and thought the same thing
Same here
Just did it again. I am hopeless.
How does he tell such a detailed story with no words
Skallywanka
One note at a time.
Skallywanka with feeling.
Thank you, Mason Williams, for an epic piece of music.
i grew up with three siblings that have played stringed and wood instruments most of their lives. and this guy made that guitar make 3 or 4 sounds ive never heard coaxed out of an acoustic. couldnt think of higher praise than that; its like he discovered a new color, at least to me. and yeah, american dad got me looking.
Same here, after I heard Roger play that, I absolutely had to find out where it was from. I was like his audience in show: completely slack-jawed and mesmerized.
The best part is no one enjoys listening to Tommy play more than Tommy himself. The man has guitar ingrained into his very being
he got his first guitar when he was 4. I think those notes flow through his blood. Deeply rooted in him.
I haven't been able to get through this entire video once without my laptop catching on fire. I have now gone through 15 laptops. The sounds at 3:18 also sent me to the hospital because my eyes and ears couldn't reconcile what they were experiencing. That being said, 10/10.
Never in my life have I seen someone do that on the guitar. Tommy is truly on another level.
I wonder what Maybelle Carter could do with this song?
I read this at the same time as 3:18 played. I couldn't see the time, but I knew your comment was referencing that part.
Tommy is so genuine, it’s like he is as surprised with his goat talent as we are.
