- #7 was part of the famed 1983 Draft Class. 1985 was his finest year, as he passed for 25 TD’s and just 8 Int’s. While he didn’t have the career longevity of Elway or Marino, O’ Brien was a solid QB who carved out a decent career.

Ken O’ Brien was the best NY Jets QB that pushed the ball down field. He never had a proper OL. Marvin Powell ProBowl 1983 and Joe Fields in 1985. By 1987 they both had left the NY Jets. It’s amazing what he accomplished with this OL and his many times he was sacked through his career as a NY Jet. He was sacked 62 times in 1985. O’Brien was as tough has they come.
If Al Toon stayed concussion free, he’d be in Canton right now. He was the total package.
I still think he'll make it
I played with him in college, and while I had the worst hands on the team, I never dropped a pass he sent me. He could control the angle, spin and placement of the ball almost telekinetically.
Appreciate the backstory! That was a really good academic school. You guys must have worked pretty hard in the class room! Respect.

O'Brien most underrated QB
He was superb in 85 and most of 86...injuries on D destroyed what wouldhave undoubtedly been a deep playoff run in 86...happy memories and what an array of talent on O..Toon, Walker, McNeil, Hector, Shuler...and good back ups , Klever, Sohn etc
The Jets underachieved in the 1980s. They had alot of talent on both sides of the ball, they played in weak division and yet could not win a single division title.
@@smitskee think about it, they had a great pair of wide receivers in Toon and Walker, Shuler was a very good tight end, Freeman McNeil was a very good back with Johnny Hector at full back, and a good offensive line.. Thier defensive line was very good with Klecko, Lyons,, and Gastineau. They had very good linebackers in Lance Mehl, Greg Buttle, and Kyle Clifton, and a good secondary. Yet as a team they accomplished nothing. Maybe the combination of O'brien and Joe Walton ruined this team.

@@smitskee We all know how great Montana was but Craig and Rathman are so underrated. Craig should be in the HOF. He was a great runner, blocker, and was great catching the ball out of the backfield. Rathman was a great blocker for Craig and Montana but was also a real threat when running with the ball. Rathman may have been the greatest pass receiving fullback as well.

@Otterom Ken o'brien had a very bad habit of holding on to the ball too long when his receivers were not open. That is the main reason why he took so many bad sacks. He never learned to just throw the ball away or to run with the ball if his receivers were not open.

big problem was his slow release and the many sacks that he would take because of his lack of escapability
@@jamessollazzo4860 o'brien was s flawed quarterback. When his receivers were covered he would just stand in the pocket until he was sacked. He took alot of unnecessary sacks that hurt his team's field position. He never learned to run with the ball or to throw the ball away when his receivers were not open.
@@smitskee I was at a game back in 1989 and the Jets had the ball on the 5 yard line. O'brien dropped back to pass and his receivers were all covered. All O'brien had to do was jog 6 yards into the end zone for an easy touchdown. O'brien started to run but for some unknown reason he just stopped at the goal line and waited to get tackled. It was one of the most bizarre things I had ever seen while watching football.
Although his passing numbers were average compared to a few other contemporary players in the AFC (Marino Elway Warren Moon)
He still had a pretty solid career with the Jets in the 80s/early 90s

@@AubreyChase7 Sanchez was carried by the defense and a running game. As soon as they opened up the offense in 2011 he fell flat on his face

Love Kenny O. Very strong arm. Had a bit of a slow release and wasnt mobile, but he was smart, accurate, and if you gave him time he could be a solid above average QB
If Ken O'Brien play today with all the rules protecting quarterbacks he'd be called the greatest quarterback ever. If he had a half decent offensive line that protected him his numbers would have been right up there with the greatest.

As a Jets fan of 40yrs, it's hard to believe this was the good ole days. Especially since we look God awful for the last 8 years in a row. from 2012-2020. And also prior
to 2010, God awful from 1990-2009. So basically 25 of the last 30 seasons have been total losses. The only 2 really good seasons we've had since O'Brian were Mark Sanchez and Rex Ryan 2009-2011. And all the Rex Ryan haters can kiss my butt. He was the only coach since O'Brian that could put together a winning season. 2 winning seasons in fact, not to mention 2 AFC Championship games. 1 of which we lost in OT because our idiot field goal kicker missed 2 field goals in OT. Here's looking to 2021.....25 quarterbacks later - Sam Darnold era here we go.
Devon Chase I'm right there with you as a fan of this team since 81. You make some salient points. I absolutely agree with you about Rex Ryan, and though I consider myself to be a reasonable person, perhaps supporting Ryan for as long as I have completely negates that. Bottom line is that he gave the Jets an identity, no matter how shitty it may have been. They didn't have one before and haven't had one since, unless you count losing and irrelevance. But to your other points, they've had some good years. You're gonna forget 98? And the idiot kicker incident wasn't in the AFC championship game, but a divisional round game at Pittsburgh in 04 during the Herm Edwards years, which also on the whole were pretty good. That was another example where the coach was to blame, not the player. He got conservative and actually took a knee and lost yardage before one of those kicks, in what everyone knows is the toughest place to kick in the entire league. So in summary, the Jets organization sucks and even now in 2020 it's still an issue which led to a premature trade of their best player. What other team has four straight coaches quit on them and end up somewhere else? That's impossible in the modern NFL where coaches basically get 3 years to make the playoffs. Good times!
Billy Smith No question. I've lived through the disappointment. There are many reasons for it starting with ownership but for me they've NEVER had a true home field in a league that places emphasis on the home field advantage. When they moved from Shea it was supposed to be temporary but 25 years later when they had a chance to claim their own territory they salivated over being "gifted" that West Side stadium -which even as a diehard Jet fan I'm glad didn't happen- and when it didn't happen they made no effort to look at another site in Queens or Nassau County, and instead came crawling back to the Giants. In this day and age with the secondary market it looks ugly when the Jets are bad because the bulk of the fan base is still on Long Island so they ain't trekking out to Jersey in the cold during another lost season. Back in the day those seats were empty but now they're filled with visiting fans. Terrible decision by ownership until you realize how much they actually put in along with the Giants to build that monstrosity.
I believe in the end the problem comes down to the owner. We've had the same owner Woody Johnson for many years now and he always hires the wrong coaches the wrong general managers and at the end of the day that's what causes us to ultimately Crash and Burn. Because the general manager is really responsible for hiring the personnel and the players and with the wrong coach and the wrong players there's nothing that will make a team successful.
Devon Chase Absolutely. And how many carousels has Johnson had? It's hard to keep track. At first there was some stability, then they have Mr. T and Mangini; then they get rid of Mangini for Rex but keep Mr.T; then Rex is retained but Mr. T fired; they bring in Idzik who is forced to work with Rex; they get rid of them both for McCagnan and Bowles but McCagnan didn't really hire Bowles; Bowles is fired and they let McCagnan run an offseason and hire Gase only to get rid of him for Douglas. And on and on. Maybe these two guys can work together harmoniously but it's pretty easy given what I previously mentioned to believe they won't. Meanwhile Pittsburgh has had three coaches since 1969.

Charles Gorman there you go, hit the nail right on the head. He was a developmental prospect anyway coming out of a smaller school, so this just shows the lack of continuity the Jets had organizationally between the front office and coaching staff.
Billy Smith very interesting points. Studio 54 certainly didn't help matters nor did Walton's constant shake up with O'Brien and Ryan. How could anyone play confidently and consistently back there. It's a shame too because when healthy their complement of backs and receivers were among the league's best.
Billy Smith that's right. He was set up to fail. How many 3rd and ones were single man long-to-develop patterns that were difficult to complete which paired nicely with 3rd and 6 draws and tosses. And that's why Shula and now Belicheat are dominating playing different styles and fitting their game plans to the strength of their personnel. Maybe some day a Jet coach will do that.
Billy Smith oh yeah I'm picturing one of those jailbreak type rushes that devoured him as soon as he turned back towards the line of scrimmage. Maybe he'd slip one guy and step right into two more. Walt Michaels should have had that team for a decade. Just like four straight coaches quit the Jets on their own starting with Parcells, the Jets fired Michaels coming off an AFC Championship Game appearance. Who does that? I realize Michaels caused a scene on the plane coming back from the L.A. Raider game but who gives a shit? Plus Kotite gets two years but Pete Carroll only one, and Walton got the better part of the decade despite always having teams that wore down in December. It was despicable how bad they were in December with a lot to play for except for 89.
Billy Smith all great points. Did Pittsburgh hire Walton as an assistant after the Jets fired him? I thought they did before he ended up back in college with James Madison or something. You're right about the Leon Hess situation which largely impacted the Parcells, Belicheat and Groh departures but when you add Herm Edwards orchestrating his departure to Kansas City that's a foursome of quitters likely to never be seen again. And yes, I'm still bitter about Parcells. Did he leave the Jets in a better place? He sure did. But when you consider the money, control and draft picks they gave up to bring him in coupled with only getting three years from him as coach- I don't care about his fourth year as GM just as I didn't care when the Knicks brought in Phil Jackson as GM; their values were as coaches- that to me wasn't enough. Plus he blew a playoff berth in 97 because he didn't like O'Donnell and one in 99 when he didn't have a viable backup for Testaverde. Lastly, after all is said and done, he still coached Dallas for longer than the Jets. We can never lay claim to anything meaningful, and maybe we don't deserve to.

I was 9 yrs old as a Jets fan so I couldn't appreciate what was going on... but for those old enough, can you explain why this man never accomplished much with the Jets? He clearly had talent, just watch the vid here. So was it same old Jets, and having no support around him (like Darnold) or was it bad coaching, or did he have some crazy injury??
Considering he was benched in their playoff game later this same season for inferior qb play (to the team that would make the superbowl), seems like coaching must have been a pretty big issue

@@joedimaggio6261 Since the 1970 merger, the Jets and Lions have been very similar. Both teams have had about 15 winning seasons. Jets won their division twice. Lions, maybe 3or4 times. Both made the playoffs 10-12 times. Although the Jets had Parcells for three years, not much Head Coach envy for either team.

Jets always had the worst offensive line. Jets were too cheap to spend money on a left tackle. You would never see Bruce Smith or Lawrence Taylor sacking O'brien. Had Namath had an offensive line he would have played longer.
Marino like Obrien was not very mobile. But unlike Obrien Marino knew to throw the ball away when his receivers were not open to avoid getting sacked. Marino was sacked much less than Obrien.

@@smitskee jets fans either love Obrien or hate him. I think that Obrien being a total unknown to people in the NFL is not true. The general public had never heard of him but many NFL people at the time were well aware of him. Many NFL college scouts were aware of what he did at division 2 Cal Davis.

There are multiple QB’s in the Hall of Fame that never won a playoff game.

He did win a playoff game he won in 86 vs the chiefs
KamarTB Pat Ryan won that 86 game with Kansas City. They had benched O'Brien when the offense sputtered and they lost their last 5 games to finish 10-6. In three of those games they couldn't score at all, then put up some points in the last two which were blowout losses to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.
Nope that slow release award would go to Carson Wentz... wind up of the century.... O'Brien, was not amazing...true... but he was a good player. I idolised Marino growing up (he is still the best I've ever seen throw the ball) and O'Brien showed up for every game against him. Decent.
