  • In this video, I assemble a 52'6" mill gondola and then build a pipe load for it. Although not an exact copy, the load is based on a prototype photo I downloaded from the internet a few days prior.

After much swearing and cussing I finally completed a Tichy Train Group flatcar. I wanted to build one as I'd seen another modeler assemble one and it didn't look to be that difficult. I did follow the instructions to the tee & wish I hadn't. After installing the stirrups in a previous step I began to install the extra provided bronze phosphor grab irons and broke off every stirrup I'd previously installed. If you ever build this kit, install the stirrups as the very LAST step! I spent nearly as much time chasing small parts across the floor as I did assembling the model. LOL! I did make some metal stirrups out of a desktop stapler's staples that were the exact size I needed for the stirrups. I ended up painting each board on the deck a different shade of brown mixing my acrylic paint in a little communion cup as I went along. It came out looking very realistic. I wanted to build this also because of the very detailed brake work underneath the chassis but no one will ever really see that kinda detail. Cheers from eastern TN

Looks good, Peter! And don't worry about background noise from the kids. Enjoy them being there while you can. As soon as you blink, they'll all be grown up and moved out.

Thank-you for the comment. You express a sentiment that I hear a lot, but for me it was very different. Those two children belonged to my wife's daughter, who was nearly 18 when we first met and who refused to accept me as her step-dad. So with that in mind, why should I accept them as my grand-kids? The three of them were in my home for more than a year after we graciously offered three months of assistance. The two kids destroyed everything they touched; their mother (who has no respect for anyone or anything) refused to reign them in; and my wife refused to enforce the house rules or allow me to do so. I didn't mind the noise on my off days, but during the week, I would get home from the job-site, thoroughly exhausted, with the sounds of power-saws, nail-guns and air-compressors still ringing my ears and the last thing I wanted was to have to put up with kids charging around screaming until midnight. It was a happy day for me when they finally moved out!

I really enjoy your videos, I'm not in the position to get into trains right now, however, just following your videos lets me enjoy the hobby.

I've had great luck using Drinking straws - they also work fine for roof top errata - especially the bendable type.

Nice work Peter! I may have skipped some of the glue on the middle sections out of laziness though. Then again, if you are planning on moving them from one car to another the extra glue is probably necessary. They look great! Cheers, Dan

Heyya!!!! Thanks for another great video!
I don’t know if I would’ve gone 5 high on the pipes but, nonetheless it looks fantastic!
I got a question if you don’t mind.
I know you’ve done a video on operations at your passenger terminal which I enjoyed and you’ve done detailing of the freight cars but, have you or plan to do any detailing of your passenger cars?
Love your channel and keep em coming!! Thank you!
I wish I coulda gotten in on those crates ya made!! How fantastic!

      Thanks for the compliments.
I was originally only going to go 4-tiers high, but I got carried away cutting pipes and wanted to use up the pieces. It's still well below the loading gauge and not even close to the weight limit of the car.
I haven't done any work on passenger cars, mainly because they are all high-end R-T-R cars. When I get custom decals, I'll do a video on re-lettering them.
The crates and the molds are still available. Email me with your requirements: mpeterll64@gmail.com

i have thought of doing up some pipe loads, what do you think of using straws for the pipes? McDonalds straws, pretty much a free product

I have considered that too. Might be a bit too large in diameter though. Also, coffee stirrers may work too.

I use black straws for my o scale loads. They look good.

Straws may be a good free source of pipes. The small ones will someday form the basis of another load although they didn't have the look I wanted for this one. The full-sized soda straws are sometimes not as round as they may appear at first glance (maybe a result of rough handling distorting the thin plastic). Also, I've found them very difficult to cut cleanly without distortion. If you can solve that problem, then the wall thickness is better than plastruct tubing.

I have tried soda straws in the past. (from Subway)
they do NOT glue together well at all.
however, that may not hold true for all straws from other places.
thank you for making these videos. I really enjoy them.
I like how you kinda do a weekly project etc.
also like the format of how you present them.
      thanks.
      Keep up the good work.

Bravo! The load seems a bit too Tall. No?

    • @mpeterll

It's well within the loading gauge. Maybe 4-tiers would have been closer to the look of the original load, but I had a lot of left-over pieces to use up.
