Looks like basically a palette of primaries with black substituting for blue. Yellow and black makes an optical green. Sort of a modified Zorn palette.

Black and yellow make green, so black and greys are actually just extremely dark and low saturated blues, because green is caused by a mix of yellow and blue. And also brown is just a very dark desaturated orange. Nature is mostly made up of greys and browns, so then nature and the world is mostly made up of blue and orange.

Interesting... in the theory.. purple should be the shadow component of yellow (at least in transparent watercolors it works great)
Yes. But that is a short cut kinda rule of thumb. Just going slightly in that direction also works,
