    There is no reason this guy shouldn't have his own live art show on tv. Joe you're simply amazing an I love that you wanna teach people to get better. If the world took this attitude on about passing knowledge down, we would be so better off. Keep up the great work.

    Actually the difference between paint and light is that paint is reflected light, and light is projected. When light hits the paint, the paint absorbs every frequency of light except the color you see, which is reflected back at you. The color on your monitor or tv, on the other hand, isn't made by this absorbtion/reflection process. It's just pure color. Before the invention of television, most of the light you would see would be reflected light, or indirect color. Your eyes don't really know the difference. As artists, we are only concerned with the mixing of paint, because there is no mixing in Photoshop. I have noticed, though, that when Windows is in night light mode, and the blues are either subdued or eliminated entirely, there is an illusion that makes black text appear slightly bluish. I don't believe this is from desensitization, I believe that our eyes seek out a full spectrum, and when a color is absent, the eyes will strain to find it. The result is that the neutral text amidst the orangeish white looks blue, even though there is in fact no blue on the screen.
    Something similar is happening with the grey among all that blue. Even though there is orange, its presence only enhances the effect, because even though light has no compliment system, the closest thing lies in the fact that red and blue are at opposite ends of the spectrum. So the grey among all that blue appears reddish, which translates to orange because the orange sky suggests that's what it must be. Otherwise the illusion would look more pinkish.
    The top experiment is interesting. Yellow isn't a complement to blue even with light, but the resulting grey suggests the two colors are, in fact, acting like an unevenly mixed complementary pair. You even suggest something like this is true; that yellow light mixed with blue is tantamount to mixing all three primary colors of light. By spinning the top, you proved this is the case. The eyes see the two frequencies of light mixing and making grey. It doesn't make green because you're not mixing paint. You're mixing reflected light, which to the eye is indistinguishable from direct light.
    Whether I'm right or wrong about all this, I'm glad I watched. Anyone interested in seeing how color opposites work and which color inverts to which opposite could learn a lot from it. And from using an art program to invert colors, since on the monitor they invert using the light spectrum, not the artistic color wheel system.

      Mix equal parts of smy and you got k.
      Mix equal parts of rgb and you got k.
      K plus k equal to the black.
      Black and White are just shades of grey.

    I have followed you for quite a while and wanted to expand upon the point you're making about listening to and learning from a variety of sources. As you say, some people choose to only listen to a limited number of sources ("best experts"), but a lot of times experts make assumptions about the knowledge of their audiences, or they have been exposed to certain concepts for so long they forget to mention or omit many important facts. You make great videos. Thanks!

    First off, greetings from down the mountain in the valley of the sun. Thank you for explaining the things you are telling us. I taught myself how to paint three years ago by watching you tube. You are the best I have seen at explaining what we see in the world, and I have watched a lot of videos. You have a gift for teaching, and your art is not to shabby as well. I just wanted to say thank you for what you do. I do have a couple of questions. My son watched this color video with me and you mentioned how we see white. We were wondering about black, from a light perspective, not paint. Second I purchased your learning videos, and I watched all the water related ones, but I was wondering if you could help me on something? How would I paint flowing water? Not a waterfall, but like its flowing over an edge and down a hill, but not falling. The water is a big part of the project I am trying. I would appreciate any advice, and I understand if this is something you just can't tell me over text. Anyways, thanks again. I really enjoy watching your videos.
    Mike

    Joe, I have a question. This might be a stupid question, but, do you have to be good at drawing to be good at painting. Because what I've seen, it seems more like in drawing you have to make more conscious decisions on everything but with painting it seems like you more have to know the right techniques to create certain illusions. I may have just answered my own question, but do you think that is a correct statement?

    • @Lillith8810
      @Lillith8810 7 років тому

      Marcus Tullius Cicero I think it just depends on the person. I personally find painting easier than drawing.

    • @XMusicxXxSoulX
      @XMusicxXxSoulX 7 років тому +5

      Highly relatable, I should include. I specialized in drawing believing that the sooner I master it, the sooner I can begin solid painting. I met another fellow artist who strictly paints and I do have to say painters have their own type of evaluation. My collegue is always stressing to me that she isnt a drawer but a painter. She has a huge color vocabulary and smooth tecnique. I am more analytical and have to say I steeply underestimated painting and color theory.

    • @beacreates4370
      @beacreates4370 6 років тому +4

      It kinda depends on the person, I know a lot of artists who are just strictly one or the other. But personally I find that having skill in drawing helps my artwork become better because it forces me to study what I am actually looking at and not just the colors

    • @rbdel
      @rbdel 6 років тому +1

      In my point of view painting is an innovation of drawing since you can make different realistic textures just by changing brushes unlike drawing where you literally have to draw the texture

    Joe I like your vids. This one is a bit more of a science class heavy based in projected light as opposed to reflected light. @Korn Hole said below. When an artist is educating themselves in color theory because they want to paint. They need more of what the primary's are and secondaries and complements, and triads, and so forth. In art school painters need to learn the color wheel, and what works well, and what makes a color scheme, and how to make people move emotionally without writing words. That is what color theory in the art world is. This vid is not color theory, but science facts. Good facts. But a little pointless for art students. Unless they are digital artist wanting to "print" their work and wonder why it looks different on screen than the print. Your an awesome muralist btw.

    As far as learning how to create art from unlikely people, I once stopped a college English professor in mid lecture, back when there were still black boards, because, in between talking points his eraser marks made the best beetle. I now know how to draw beetles because I saw an image where one shouldn't have been and I stopped a class when I shouldn't have...no regrets. The majority of my artistic talents have come, not from lecture, but observation and an open mind.

    OMG- Thanks so much for reading my comment! I have had a rough week and that just made me sooooo freakin' happy!! You are such a nice person!! I can die happy now, but I think I'll just be in a good frame of mind now and paint all day! I was wondering, you live in Arizona but paint the ocean, do you just look on line for pictures or do you just come up with it from memory? I could take pictures of beaches in Ventura and Santa Barbara and send them to you if that would help you. Would love to do it for you. Let me know.

    I've learned so much from you joe! I took some art lessons from a man named Jerry yarnell, but no one could explain painting as well as you can! Love all your paintings and murals, I am trying to get into mural-ing. Have watched probably every one of your videos. Do you have any tips for a fellow artist? How do you get your paint to move so well on a wall, mine just seeps right into the pores on the wall, and I get a broken pattern. Email me if you can ***** much appreciated!

    Hi Joe, I am a relatively new sub and you gave me something which I had never had. I have just watched this video and the color spectrum confuses me somewhat awful. Some teachers tell me to darken my sea at the back, but you tell me to lighten it, this gets very confusing, as I am painting a large seascape kind of picture with a mountain and pink trees coming over the top to frame the mountain (you probably know the scene). My sky is darker at the top and lighter at the bottom, but my water is now the opposite way, with green in front. I am very confused. I am not a young man and just starting out.

      I'm also a new (old) beginner. By following different artists, I learned among other things that the same result can often be achieved using different methods and approaches. So eventually, we gain enough experience (hopefully) and adapt our own way to do things inspired by the pioneers.

    So if our eyes had a cone that was more sensitive to yellow rather than green (like primary colors) would the sky appear more purple, rather than light blue? Sort of off subject, but I'm trying to grasp this theory by viewing a different approach.

    I always think of RGB as a light source and CMYK as a light absorber. White light has all the frequencies and for instance cyan paint absorbs all parts of the white light that are not cyan, and reflects the cyan. Black absorbs all frequencies and white absorbs none. Also a reason why black objects gets hotter then white objects.
    Your explanation adds a lot about how to get vibrant colors. Mixing will never be as effective as paint of the wanted color. It shows really well when you order paint in a DIY shop where they take white paint and mix in colored pigments. A better way would be to use transparent paint as a base giving the pigments more effect.
