    11 WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON BOOTS: stridewise.com/best-boot-deals/
    FULL REVIEW + PICTURES: stridewise.com/thorogood-1892-...
    Owned by the Weinbrenner Shoe Company and made in Merrill, Wisconsin, Thorogood is an employee-owned company that is known for their moc-toes, but I wanted to try out their 1892 Dodgeville boots. Why? Because they’re 100 percent meant to compete with the industry’s big dog, the Red Wing Iron Rangers. Let’s take a look.
    **DON'T MISS: THE 5 BEST BOOTS FOR FALL: • THE 5 BEST MEN'S BOOTS...
    THOROGOOD 1892 DODGEVILLE FIRST GLANCE
    There are a ton of similarities with the Iron Ranger: toecap, silhouette, Vibram sole, Goodyear welt.
    But a big difference is the leather. Surprisingly, for boots that are so inexpensive, these are made with Horween’s beloved Chromexcel leather.
    Quality control-wise there were a few loose threads when I got them and a lot more after I’d been wearing them for a few weeks but I don’t really see that as a con for boots at this price point.
    **COMPARE WITH RED WING IRON RANGER: • Red Wing Iron Rangers ...
    THOROGOOD 1892 DODGEVILLE LEATHER
    This is made with Chromexcel leather, a combination tanned leather with a long history in footwear. (It also has history not in footwear - it was used in tanks during World War 2.)
    Made over 28 working days using every floor of the Horween facility in Chicago, the leather is jam packed with oils and greases and results in a very nice, moist, lustrous leather that age very well.
    The downsides are the top finish scratches kind of easily and more importantly I had a big problem with the counters. As you can see in the video or in the article, after a week of wear the counter of the right shoe had darkened WAY more than the left.
    Now I have asymmetrical shoes. I think Thorogood’s leather selection just isn’t that great, but again, it’s hard to be too upset given the cost.
    Care for the leather with Venetian shoe cream every few months. Make sure you clean them with a horsehair brush and/or a wet cotton cloth when necessary.
    THOROGOOD DODGEVILLE SOLE
    You might call this a combination sole: it’s leather and cork with a Vibram lug on top of it.
    Vibram is a really high quality Italian rubber that’s great in slippery conditions and pretty good at absorbing shock, too. The sole on the Dodgeville is particularly grippy because it’s not entirely dissimilar from a Commando sole.
    This makes for a shoe with a pretty chunky silhouette that’s harder to pull off in formal situations, especially because the dark Vibram contrasts noticeably with the cork.
    But if you hate the sole, you can always replace it because this shoe is made with a 360-degree Goodyear welt, which makes for a pretty water resistant shoe that’s also easy to resole.
    THOROGOOD FIT & SIZING
    I ordered a half size down from my regular size. My Brannock measurement is closer to 11.5 o 11.75 but most of my boots, including Red Wing, Wolverine, Thursday, Viberg, and others, are size 11.
    Only the “D” (normal) width is available so you’re out of luck if you wear wider shoes. Fortunately I’m a D and I found the shoes to be pretty comfortable with a good amount of heft to them as well.
    They didn’t need any breaking in, though after a week, as mentioned earlier, there were a lot of loose threads and the counter of the right shoe had darkened a lot.
    THOROGOOD DODGEVILLE PRICE
    These shoes are $270. They’re hard to find online but I’d recommend going to Zappos, though they don’t sell the lighter Cognac color, which I could only find on Garmentory.
    VERDICT
    Pros
    * Inexpensive - about the same price as Chippewa but better quality.
    * Chromexcel leather
    * Grippy Vibram sole
    * Good weight
    Cons
    * Leather went dark on one of the counters
    * No other widths available
    * Kind of chunky sole that’s hard to dress up
    * QC issues
    Overall, these boots worked out better for me than my Wolverine 1000 Miles and they were a hundred bucks cheaper. They’re not the cheapest boots on Earth, but you could do worse.

    Thanks for doing this video! It looks like most commenters here are Team Iron Ranger, which is totally fine. Other comment boards I've found seem more favorable to the Dodgeville.
    Nordy Rack has these for $125 right now. Pretty good value for a GYW, MUSA, CXL boot, even with a few minor QC issues, as long as they have your size in stock. They did have my size, so I pulled the trigger. Looking forward to trying them out.

    Great video once again my friend. Keep it going with the dress boots too! So you did recommend staying true to size on these or half size smaller? I’m an 8.5 in Iron Rangers should I stay 8.5 with these too you think?

    Excellent review. I purchased these boots as well for the Horween leather and was not disappointed. Oh how I wish they had wider widths. I also actually prefer the vibram halfsoles. As far as the loose threads go I used a lighter to burn them after opening the box. As far as darkening of the leather I have a question as regard if this is not the spew of the leather... I used a hair dryer to even the spew of the whole wing leather. #thorogood

    The sole on these actually reminds me of the Red Wing Beckman. Going by your previous video would it be fair to say at $199, Thursday's Captain boots are much better value? They come in many more colour options and can be had in two widths as well. If not in every colour though.

    • @liljuanito123
      @liljuanito123 3 роки тому

      @@rinzler5549 after purchasing many boots since those beloits, from Thursday to Vibergs, I can say Thorogood uses very thin chromexcel leather compared to others, I understand cxl is soft but this is like flops around soft. My Oakstreet Trench Boots have more wears and still holding their shape. The construction is a bit off. Once broken in your heel sits much lower and is not comfortable. Inserts kinda help but in the end it's just the construction of the boot that isn't that great.

    Another nice video Nick! Very informative. I was not familiar with this boot. As you so well point out, it is a great price point for a chromexcel boot. With regard to the leather on the heel which darkened shortly after you got the boots. I’m wondering if you had done any sort of conditioning/polishing, etc. at ANY time before you noticed the leather had darkened? Just curious if for some reason the darkening of the leather might be a delayed reaction to a conditioning type cream? You are spot on correct about Horween recommending Venetian lotion/cream; but curios if the change in color might be a latent response to the lotion, and due to some defect in that portion of the leather. Hope this makes sense. Anyway, I’m curios as to your thoughts on this topic. Thanks again for all the work in putting together these videos. Ed

      Hey Nick, I assumed that you hadn’t conditioned the boots, or you would of mentioned it.
      On another topic, Allen Edmonds just had a crazy good sale and I picked up my second pair of Higgins Mills, (Brown), and a pair of Normandy Boots in black. I love the brown Higgins Mill, even more so than the black pair I previously purchased. I am also quite pleased with how much I enjoy the AE Normandy Boot with its Kudu leather. It fits differently than the Higgins Mill, but they are quite comfortable.
      I see that Allen Edwards is moving away from chromexcel leather in it’s Higgins Mill boots, (at least in the black version). Just wondering if you had heard of this and what thoughts you might have on AE moving away from chromexcel in this boot. Perhaps a cost cutting move? Thoughts? Thanks, Ed

    I can give you a possible explanation for why the heel piece went dark. A couple years ago I made myself a ranger belt. I had plenty of narrow leather strapping on hand but had to order a wider belt blank for the base. When I finished the belt and oiled it the narrow straps turned noticeably darker than the newer belt blank, so your heel piece may have been made of leather that had been sitting on the shelf a little longer than the rest of the leather the boot was made from.

    • @Stridewise

      Depends on what you are walking on and what type of sole you have. Leather plus pavement/rough concrete will wear out real fast and especially if its wet. Theyll get chewed up pretty quick. Other soles like dainite and virbram will last longer depending on the conditions of course too. What type of boot were you looking at?

    Bought these boots about 1.5 years ago in the black CXL version and they were immaculate( outside of one loose thread i snipped off). They definitely looked like a +300$ boot IMO. for them. I got fitted at a RW store and bought the iron ranger in a 9EE, and the 9 in the Dodgeville were very similar in width. I did email Milworks about the sizing beforehand and they told me the Dodgeville last was more universal in sizing and were a bit wider than normal. They fit perfect for my slightly wide feet.
    Dodgeville’s are much more comfy than the iron rangers over time, and certainly out of the box, but i do prefer the more rugged feeling of the Rangers. The leather lining in the Dodgeville is really nice and helpful. Using Venetian cream every couple months and they have kept up beautifully. Thinking of getting them resoled with Dainite sometime soon.

      If I remember correctly you fit Into an 11 D in the thorogood 814-4200 yet you also fit into an 11 D in these dodgeville. Owning both now I can say that these run larger than the moc toes. But if anyone else has an opinion on the matter I’d love to know. I’m waiting for a pair of these in 7.5 now just to see if they’ll fit better. Even though like I said the 8 fit fine just look a little big on me lol and feel a little more spacious than I’d expect from a nice dressy leather shoe/boot

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  5 років тому

      Yeah it's super hard to compare boot sizes even when you're the exact same size as someone else, given people have different insteps and so on. That said, and I hate saying 'should' or 'shouldn't' but you shouldn't wear athletic socks with boots. Try some wool ones and if they're still too roomy I'd consider sending 'em back. But remember if a boot is a tad *long* I don't think it matters, it's more that it fits your width and the toe break is in the right spot. stridewise.com/how-boots-should-fit/

      Yeah, I've never paid above $200 for Red Wings myself, factory firsts. I've actually paid more for my factory seconds (still under $200). It's boot season, so we'll see less discounts, and I think Amazon discounts less heavily than they use to. Maybe Red Wing is cracking down on that. But yeah, my Iron Rangers were $160 new on Amazon about a year ago.

    For me... iron rangers have too much volume in the boot. For a size which fits me correctly, 11.5, the volume is just too much and I have to wear very thick socks. If I wear a size 11 my big to rubs quite uncomfortably against the side/front.
    Been looking at some Chippewa or Thorogood.
    But I really prefer the iron ranger overall look.
    And I wish the shaft was a little higher.

    • @BradleyHansonPhotography
      @BradleyHansonPhotography 5 років тому +1

      Jonathan- I have the EXACT problem. I needed insoles. I wear a 13 in Adidas/Puma/Converse/Nike, 12 in most Allen Edmonds, 11.5 in Clarks, etc. The Merchant and Sheldon fit me perfectly as 11.5 as the toe box and vamp is lower. With the Iron Rangers, an 11 was the right height, but too tight in the toe box and it rubbed my big toe raw. I'm interested in the Thorogood 1892 Beloit, which is like a Red Wing Blacksmith in that it has nearly identical look without the cap toe. Have you seen them? www.thorogoodusa.com/product/814-9011/

      It's not really employee owned. The employees get a stock ownership plan through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (which basically means they get stock as part of their pay structure, but they get no voice whatsoever in the running of the company). So it's a long long way from a worker co-op. If it were a true worker cooperative, the employees would have an equal vote in all aspects of the running of the company, so they wouldn't need to be in a union.

    Thorogood 1892 Dodgeville boots are excellent.
    it was better than the Red Wing iron Ranger 8111.
    These boots were much better than I had expected.
    I honestly didn't expect much until I ordered these boots and tried them on myself.
    In places like the Reddit Forum site,
    Horween Chromexcel leather is clearly a issue that is divided between those who hate and those who love it.
    There is a reputation for being well wrinkled and easily creased.
    Especially Wolverine 1000 mile boots lines show such symptoms.
    Someone said It's because of leather's Loose grain in unsuitable area.
    Someone said It's because of animal tallow oil in leather fibers.
    Anyway, Thorogood 1892 Dodgeville boots don't have such symptoms.
    Leather is flexible, but tough and strong. The wrinkles are not ugly, and the wrinkles are not seriously creased.
    Perhaps it has changed the Chromexcel production process at the Horween Tannery.
    Or the Thorogood shoe factory gave the leather a sticky hard beeswax impregnating process.
    Thanks to the leather lining inside the boot,
    feet are more comfortable than the Red wing iron Ranger 8111 boots and free from friction in the ankle bones.
    My feet are comfortably wrapped so my heels don't blister.
    Unfortunately, the Thorogood's own brand Thorogood 1892 Heritage line launch doesn't look hit the jackpot as the Red Wing Heritage line,
    but the Thorogood 1892 Dodgeville boots are very good and satisfying. it was better than the Red Wing iron Ranger.

    • @MarcP5267

      Stridewise Iron Rangers are oil tan leather different than CXL. Yes CXL creases a lot more than oil tan but that’s the nature of CXL. Even oil tan leather can have loose grain. Like I said there’s a difference between creasing and loose grain.

    6:01 The stitching has worn through because the bootmaker didn't even think it important to recess the sole for the welt stitching - perhaps the most important structural part of a shoe. "nevertheless it's still a pretty good quality sole". No, it's not. These will likely fall apart after just a few weeks of wear. Then you'll end up having paid more to get the boots and a proper sole on them than you would for a full price pair of Iron Rangers.

      IR comfort must depend on the height of your foot. The Iron Rangers were the most brutal break in I've ever experienced, with the folds of the gusseted tongue causing pressure points into the bone. Even after they break in, that rock hard insole over a Vibram sole isn't ever like something with Poron on more cork. I have the Red Wing Merchants, which have a lot more forgiveness in the Chemigum sole, but still nothing like the comfort you'd get from a Allen Edmonds, Thursday Boot, etc.
