Just got a pair of 1892 Roofer Portage leather boots today. I typically wear 10.5D in sneakers, 10D in Thorogood work boots and ended up ordering the Portage in size 9.5D. Had to go down a full size and they fit like a glove. They're just as comfortable as my Thorogood Jump Boots and Troopers with the Gen Flex sole that I use for work. I love the interesting lace-to-toe style and the cushy insole. Much more comfortable out of the box than my Red Wing Moc Toes (which are also 9.5D if you're curious. P.S. I've been lusting over these Tomahawk boots for a while now. The 1892 collection is very underrated.
Got a pair of cordovan Chippewa service boots my freshman year of college as an investment in quality footwear (plus I got a crazy good deal) but that's has been 6 years now and they're still going strong. It wasn't until I started working trades that I discovered thorogood boots and haven't looked back. if I didn't still love my Chippewa's so much I'd definitely be looking at these!
Those are really really nice boots. I looked at those and are one of my favorites, but just got the 6” Chippewa Brentwood Homestead in a lighter coppery brown color. They’re freaking great! Hope they make the 8” Service boots and other similar 8” boots again!
Hey fellow-Chicagoan. Awesome looking boot. It is crazy to think that there is 200+ years of history to both Thorogood and Horween Chromexcel. Mind blowing.
I love the Thorogood brand. Got myself two 6" moc toe boots (one steel toe, and one soft) and they are constructed extremely well. Wore the soft toe in Berlin and walked about 15-20k steps a day and my feet felt great. Highly recommend.
These looked really nice in the Loden Green colour. Chunkier commando sole with a sturdy green leather that wouldn't get horribly marred with abuse. Wished I picked up a pair cause they would have made great festival boots.
Just picked up a pair of Thorogood Portage in brown CXL off of Nordstrom Rack. Gorgeous boots. I normally wear a size 10D in most boots (eg AE Normandy & Billy Reid Anderson) and a 9.5D fit me perfect in Thorogood. If you dont have access to trying on boots in rl, you can look up the Thorogood sizing chart. For me the fit listed was spot on.
Good review. I love the Thorogood Heritage boots. I own several pairs. Sizing wise I find I wear the same size in them I do in Converse Chuck Taylors, about a 1/2 down from my regular size. I have a pair of the Thorogood Roofer boots, the Beloit, Dodgville and green Tomahawks. I recommend any and all of them. I live in Minnesota and wear Thorogood and Red Wing.
I wish they’d bring these back. I got a pair of dodgeville’s on eBay and went with my sizing from my iron rangers. The thorogoods broke in faster and have held up just as well as the RW’s. I’d pick up these tomahawks as well as the beloits and Janesville moc toes.
Would like to try the green ones. A little different and apparently have actual vibram lugged soles. From having 1k's as my first heritage boot, the cork/leather outsole turned into size 12 skates when weather got iffy. No Thorogood stores around here unfortunately.
Great review, I wear the 6" Hertage Max wedge, they are the only boots I wear. I have recovered from plantar fasciitis using Birkinstock insoles just wearing the heritage boots. I'm looking at purchasing the Beloit or Tomahawk for my next pair. Thorogood boots have saved my feet!!!
I have the indigo Beloit 1892 and have ordered these and the natural color too. My indigo's are my favorite boots and are more comfortable than any of my chippewas or red wings
Why stop when you are in first place! What is better than a pair of good boots? Two of course. Extend that line of reasoning and you can easily see that you are way ahead of many of us.
Only 10?! I own at least 50 pairs of boots and shoes and won't part with any until they are completely worn out and can no longer be repaired/recrafted. For healthy feet you need a minimum of at least three pairs to alternate while the leather dries out and relaxes at rest. Never understood the guy with a single pair of boots or shoes. The seasons and weather change. Your day to day needs change. They usually have funk rot feet that smell bad where people standing next to them can smell it too. They are plagued with athletes foot, tired feet back and knee pains etc..etc.. Nasty!!
I own the 1892 Dodgeville bought in 2018 and super hard to find now in 12. Best boots I have ever owned. My only complaint would be any scuffing is just going to stay there. I'm sure that's not a problem for most, but sometimes I wish I could take the finish back to almost new.
You can get rid of the scuffs. Rub a little Venetian Shoe Cream on them and give em a good brushing. The scuffs disappear like magic and boots build a great patina!
Thoro full vibram bottom boots in ice are some of the scariest slippy boots I've ever had. Lol still love all my thoros, 814 3600 and 4600 are just terrible on glare ice. But are great every where else. I don't have these but like the way they look.
The black version has the same Horween CXL leather but has no speed laces and uses a Polyped sole. Any thoughts on the black version especially the Polyped sole?
I have a pair of the dodgeville’s they are super comfy, run a little large but probably the most comfortable boots I own. That includes red wing, wolverine 1000 mile and Allen edmunds Higgins mill.
Beautiful looking boots. Real craftsman ship. But they seem a bit "uncomfortable" bring that the layout (not blueprint) is as basic as it can get. I have the wedges and they are soooo comfortable. Thorogood is an awesome company and should be on more feet ha ds down.
I agree with you on the build. In general foot curvature like that pair in foot ware is more challenging to work on when your manufacturing it. Anytime, I tare off re-craftable shoes or boots with vibrams they seem to me to be built like a Panzer tank compared to others. They are still in pretty solid condition when they send them in to be re-crafted. I tip my hat to you for being realistic and appreciating the function of footwear not just looks/feel unlike several others. I’m looking at buying a pair of Thorogood boots just for outdoor use maybe walking my dog and or hitting the trail, working in construction etc. Any recommendations within the Thorogood USA made line? I try to wear more comfortable shoes for my 40 hr job i.e. shoe\boot company.
Damn ! And I thought my 814 plain toes were a nice looking boot, they are for a work boot but these are gorgeous. They sure put the iron ranger the same in the looks department, and honestly that's just the leather. These look like Brian they could be a custom handmade boot.
boot guy i need your help .iam a roofer looking to buy my first pair of thorgood roofers boots .there are no thorogood dealers even close to me any words of wisdom on sizeing or how to oeder them??????
This boots looks great and I want to get them. But in general I became interested in boots very recently and there is a lot of things I just don't understand. For example, why exactly there is a stitches on the sole, isn't the sole supposed to be in contact with ground and dirt and water etc
High quality leather boots have glued, stitched, and screwed(Wildland fire boots) soles. If the glue fails you the stitching. If the stitching fails you have screws. If the stitching fails you have the glue.
It's not the type of boot I would wear, but that is a handsome pair of boots....... Is that horse hide, fro Chicago? I can't stop looking at your damn videos. I've always worn boots, over tennis shoes, but I'm becoming addicted....... Thank's for nothin'!!!
Call me crazy as a lot of people do. But if you are the Boot Guy and you have an EBAY STORE. Why then is it that you have no Boot listings or any listings period?
I only sell my samples, not retail goods. also, as of lately I have been donating my samples to a few different shelters. that seems to be a better use of not only my time but the extra resources I have been given.
TheBootGuy Are you still offering to donate boots? I can’t afford most of the boots you review and wear a size 12. Big fan, I’ve been subscribed for years.
Boot great boots. Just wanted to ask you something. I had applied boot cream on the boots and polished it. Now after a few months my boots is drying. Can I apply the leather conditioner over the cream polish. Or should I remove the polish by using leather cleaner and then apply conditioner.
Clean your boots with a good saddle soap and brush. Dry with a microfiber cloth. Apply leather conditioner thoroughly, dry, brush. Then polish with a cream shoe cream. You may then wax polish them.
Just bought a pair of for $75 from Nordstrom Rack of the Roofer. The quality is great but lie you, i prefer a hard leather footbed that molds to the foot like RW Heritage. Underneath their insole is another layer of foam glued on. It makes my feet very sweaty!
Nice looking boots, but the front of the boots looks a little clownish. That's a deal breaker for me personally. Thanks for the great work you do, keep it up!
I bought a pair and I spilled some whiskey a small drop on the toe and now its dried off a bit but I can still see it and it drives me crazy. How could I get rid of it ?
I would spill more whiskey on them. But that's me. You might have to go to a shoe Maker and see if they have some magical solvent for alcohol-based stains. What happened is the whiskey probably reacted to the dye in the boot. You might end up recoloring/ re-dyeing the pair.

Great review on a stunning new boot. I will have to figure something out to get a pair. Say, when are you going to go to get the factory tour from Martens?
For shame! You should know better. lol Beloit, Dodgeville, Janesville, Roofer, Mondavi and Tomahawk. You should check out the Janesvilles since I know you dig your Red Wing Moc Toes.
