    Love everything you do but irrigation for cool season grass is my jumping off point. Cool season grasses are meant to go dormant in heat so pushing them constantly is like resurrecting a boxer after a knock out and sending him in for more rounds.
    Love your potion for assisting with heat stress although not a fan of superthrive. Did you consider adding liquid calcium to that mix? My local golf course turf manager insists that liquid calcium in spoonfuls over the summer helps develop cellular growth of the blades helping over come stress. I plan on adding it to your concoction. Thanks!

    There's only on thing I'd take issue with, amount of water. I have Scott's lawn care app. It recommends generally an inch of water/wk, in heat, 1.5". I use MP Rotator heads in an above ground 7 zone system. They deliver . 4" per hr. That is 2 1/2 hrs/wk. If each zone gets 30 minutes/ day M-F that's 1"/wk, unless it rains. Totally concur with moisture sensor. I have 2 Melnor 4 valve controls, the 1st feeds the second. A moisture sensor on it will withhold water to the second. The two water 6,000 sq ft. Totally enjoy your channel!

    I service one lawn which uses 40k gal/week according to water meter. 4 zones at 2 days each week (Wed and Sat), twice each scheduled day (4am & 6pm). Don't know how many inches/hr. of water that is, but as long as grass stays green in the summer heat, I wouldn't cut back on times since St. Augustine lawns like to drink a lot of water.

    The temps hit high 90s and over 100 for two weeks with no rain for the last 3 weeks. I have bluegrass. I just decided to let it go dormant to conserve on water. I decided to just water the front yard. The rest looks bad now, but I know it's going to bounce back very well when the temp is right and I give it enough water. I just have to make sure the entire yard gets a deep watering once after a few weeks to ensure that it stays alive. The downside is that the lack of moisture means less microbial activity, but my pocket thanks me.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  5 років тому +10

      From the water perspective it is the same but its generally avoided due to increased chance of lawn disease by keeping the lawn very wet through the evening hours. The blades stay soaked for hours and after days of this over and over the likelihood fo getting disease is much higher. During the day within an hour or two the blades are dry and the soil is damp which is what you want.

      I'm in NorCal and I water 5-10 mins every other night (dusk/night, It allows more water to be absorbed by the soil vs baked off by the sun) for 2 weeks, and the 3rd week no water. Forces the roots deeper. If in the "drought" week the grass starts losing color or gets too crispy I will water but have only had to do that until the roots get deeper and used to the schedule. The key is to establish as deep a root system as possible. Good luck, the CA heat is fun to battle but you can get it done. Hope this helps since I'm in close to the same climate.

    "Stop fertilizing" I love this tip. Somehow mowing high during hot season leaves me wonder: on one hand the higher grass covers the ground better and keep the moisture while on the other hand doesn't it give out more vaporizing surface of the grass? Watering hour: I water weekly and starts at 2AM that gives water enough time to sip in before temperature rises. If one waters three times a week then starting at 5AM sounds good to me.
    Thanks for making this video.

    • @ehh2681
      @ehh2681 3 роки тому

      Well yes, but plants must do this for both survival during hot seasons and energy production. You can think of it like your skin, and on your skin you have pores. These pores can excrete sweat onto the surface of the skin to evaporate and remove heat energy from the body. Same goes for plants, except for plants these are called stomata. Pores = stomata. During dry seasons, some plants have adapted the ability to open there stomata during the night, which then allow them to absorb CO2 from the air. Once morning arrives, they will close their stomata to retain water and not allow transpiration to occur. This also means that plant growth is slowed and energy production is also slowed, but it allows the plant to survive in dry conditions while also using the CO2 collected during the night for photosynthesis. It’s a pretty clever system and always amazing to know how complex plants really are. Some plants even go as far as to drop their leaves to dramatically reduce transpiration.

      I generally don't but that's only since most of my fungal issues come in early spring.

    To get an accurate reading on your "rain gauge" it has to be a perfect cylinder, not a cup that has a wider opening at the top

    That plastic cup is overshooting the amount you're really putting down. It has sloped sides, so it acts like a funnel, collecting water from a large area by measuring it in a smaller one. You need a container with vertical sides, or else do the math and put the marks in the appropriate place.

    1.5 inch of water in your plastic cup is different amount than my plastic cup. Use volumetric measure please!
