Will The Canon R5 Overheat Filming A Wedding?

  • Wedding filmmaking requires a camera that will film B-Roll in a wide variety of frame rates, as well as continuously record a long wedding ceremony. Is the Canon R5 up to the challenge, or will it overheat and be unreliable? I bought one and put it to the test for wedding videography.

Canon chose the bed they are lying on. The overheating issue is a crippling situation, especially because it affects the camera even for just shooting photos. If you rationalize that this is an amazing photo camera that Canon overhyped as a video camera... if you are a professional, you still have to ask yourself... can I rely on this item for a full day shoot? Very good testing, thank you. I wonder if you had the chance to try the s35-mode, which is oversampled 4K and not supposed to overheat. I know everybody is panning the R5 as a video tool, but if you think of it as a very good stills camera with a small c200 inside, I think it makes quite a lot o f sense (lack of reliable slo-mo notwithstanding). If the s35 4k turns out to be as reliable as the non HQ 4k, that is.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  4 роки тому

Hey Fred, definitely not intentionally ignoring. I've replied to some. :) I think its great that there is at least a workaround for this camera overheating. That said, the Ninja V is going to require an extra cost of $1000 (recorder + SSDs) to an already expensive $3900 camera.
Then you have to consider the bulkiness of any rig using the Atomos. Using it on a gimbal etc is going to slow down filmmaking a lot. For the reason of added weight I don't use nor recommend an external monitor when filming weddings.
Lastly consider that you are now relying on a rather flimsy micro hdmi cable connector to get you through a wedding day. The R5 is not recording video internally, so if something goes wrong you are stuck with an overheating camera.

@@whoismatt You can shoot 4KHQ, 4K60, and 4K s35mm Crop externally without limits. I think not even mentioning this is a huge omission. ESPECIALLY because it comes down to a personal preference of not using an external monitor. To be completely honest, you are largely in the minority on that. Most filmmakers absolutely use external monitors. Also, why didn’t you mention Super 35mm Crop? its is 5.1K oversampled to 4K and it looks excellent! You can shoot 4K Crop 24p with NO overheating. Also you are almost always on zoom lenses for this work. S35 is a very popular format for cinema shooters. In Weddings, you mostly need more lens for those intimate moments. Even using it to punch in is very useful. There is no mentions of almost any of the well known positives in this camera. The superior IBIS and industry leading eye tracking auto focus come to mind. They would come in handy for gimbal work and weddings. Those omissions are pretty wild. It borders on disingenuous.

Really good review of this topic! As a big canon fan, I am honestly very disappointed with the company. I always compared it to an Iphone, which most if time had lower specs than it's competition but worked most of the times better overall. It seems like canon decided to change this strategy and they really totally messed up. Also after seeing the improved Sony a7s3 colors and menue there are really less and less reasons to stay with canon after 10 years.

As a Canon shooter I agree 100% with your review and conclusions... My feelings are not hurt as I am only interested in facts... Of course I wish it was different but it is what it is. This is NOT a wedding filmmaker camera because of the recovery times required to film. I have a R5 and I am keeping it because I also got it for stills (outstanding) and for occasional video. Nice review as always Matt. Although the conclusion: "You can not rely on they video as a professional filmmaker" completely leaves out professional hybrid shooters who want to shoot excellent stills at 45mpx and 1080p 24p and 1080p 120fps at high mb/s. The R5 is a best of video production camera at those specs AND a beast of photography camera. Its just not an 8K RAW/4K HQ/4K60p production camera, and frankly, I don't know what kind of wedding videographer would be interested in shooting a wedding ceremony entirely in 8K Raw unless they were shooting with the C500mk ii before and felt there wasn't enough resolution! LOL! The 8K is a novelty for that special shot you really need to zoom in on. That's few and far in between. Best would be to dedicate one of the custom modes to 8K RAW, one to 4K60P, and the rest of the time stay at 4K 24 and 1080 120p. That's how I see it... but what do I know... I preordered two A7siii 's! LOL!

The entire problem seems to be the CF Express card heavily bottlenecks this camera's capabilities. And i'm sure the software is designed to be conservative in protecting against overheating the CF cards as to not damage them. I plan on doing my own test to see if switching cards frequently or if directing airflow towards the card slots when its off boosts recovery time.

Exactly. The C300mkIII (which also shoots on CFexpress cards) constantly emits hot air from its cooling vents and the cards also get extremely hot after use. Although they're very different cameras, they're not that far off in terms of processing (codecs & frame rates) so I fail to see how Canon opted for the R5's build without a proper cooling system in place rather than something closer to the S1H.

People who buy photo cameras like the R5 to shoot video are dumb and only have themselves to blame.
Who buys this camera to take pictures? Me! I'm a pro photographer and the R5 is a PHOTO CAMERA, NOT A VIDEO CAMERA. In fact, it's probably the best high res full frame camera you can buy right now (better than an A7RIV which can only do basic 4K and still overheats). Only idiots would buy an R5 for video. "Glorified EOS R"... excuse me, I have an R and it can't do full frame 4K... the R5 can. Additionally the R doesn't have dual card slots, or the best AF tracking in the world... nor does it have 45 MP photos at 14.5 stops dynamic range.

  • @77dris
    @77dris 4 роки тому

That 4K "line skipped" is still better than the 4K on the R or A7III. Anybody who bought a mirrorless camera and wants to be a pro videomaker has only themselves to blame. LOL. I've been a pro photographer for 15 years, and I'd be just as dumb to buy an A7SIII to use it for that. I had 12 MP back in 2007, and no way I'd go back to that.
Up until a month ago, 4k 120 didn't even exist on ANY mirrorless camera. Nor did 8K. Period.
How did pro wedding videographers make out prior to 4 weeks ago? Oh yeah, they shot 1080, or 4K 30. Or they have cinema cameras.
For what it's worth the R5 is less affected by extreme hot temps like in Texas and Florida than say, the 12 MP A7SIII.

Appreciate this - but I have several issues with the findings and commentary of this video. (Note: I got all my RF gear and expect to get my R5 in the next couple of days). 1. "Who buys this camera to shoot photos?" - Are you kidding me?!? It's got amazing face and animal tracking, fantastic IBIS (adding at least 3 stops), 40 MPs, and an amazing set of advanced lenses. Why would you NOT buy this to shoot still photos? It's sharpness, color fidelity and ease of operation are unbeatable. 2. "You shouldn't rely on this camera to shoot a full-day wedding". Agree, but no one would. If you want to shoot a full days video, why would you get a photo camera to the game? Rent a Canon XA50 or something like that. This is a photo camera with the added ability to shoot amazing quality bursts of video, or extended video in HD/30. Works fine for me.

I really wanted this camera to work. But I can no longer defend Canon. This is not the first time they disappoint with cameras. But it really bothers me some people calling themselves reviewers are talking about this camera but are not being objective. They said things like “ if the Camera overheats at 8k or 4K 120 don’t use it” or they said thing to justify why you should buy it when is clear this is not a professional camera. If can’t freely use 4K 120 frames or 60,24 then what the point of this camera? I understand 8k having a limit but 4K 120 and all the other 4K options overhearing as well....this is not a good product. Then, is even worse when Sony presents the same camera but different MP and no 8k and no overheating issues. If another camera with similar specs exists without overheating, then Canon has no excuse to do the same. This was my last straw with Canon and this toxic relationship has come to an end. For the first time, after using canon over 10 years I’m thinking about switching to Sony, which I never thought I would do.

The R5 does not overheat. Canon did not invent a super insulator that shields the camera from external heat. Frankly, that’s just silly, as there are tear down videos and the body is merely magnesium with a aluminum heat sink.
So what’s really happening? Canon has deliberately coded the firmware to instruct the camera not to record beyond a certain amount of time. They did this to force users to buy their cinema cameras for video. Your test actually confirm this. The cool down time cannot be sped up. Even freezing the cameras does nothing to speed recovery. Removing the lens, opening the battery and port doors while freezing does nothing to speed recovery time. This is not because Canon is using an insulator stolen from aliens... it’s because there is a timer in the firmware that prevents the cameras from operating normally until a predetermined amount of time has elapsed. It’s really that simple.
Canon, just like they removed 24p and CLog from other models, has chosen to cripple this body. Worst still, and perhaps most unforgivable, is the fact that the HDMI port on the R5 supports 8K @30p Raw output... but Canon choose not to enable it.

Sony would be the obviously choice, but all my lenses are Canon and I intent to keep the 5d Mark 4 as my main photo camera and second video camera, so more money for glass. Blackmagic 6k Pro would be my other option, but it lacks a good autofocus and pictures. Dilemmas, dilemmas...

No question that Canon went about the marketing for this camera poorly but as a professional in my business having at least two of everything has always been my motto. Nothing else in this form factor will do the high quality options the R5 does. Either get two R5’s or the A7Siii for its 4k30/60/120 and to save having to buy Sony lenses use an EF adaptor for canon glass and use the R5 for stills, 4K HQ with an external recorder and 8K internal for video with option of 35MP still frame grabs. Not to mention incredible IBIS. Realistically nobody needs all this but why not offer what it can do. Minus lens costs your in 9 grand for both bodies. It’s not chump change but it’s your business and you can bill appropriately for offering the best quality images (skill aside:) This is a pro piece of gear doing things others can’t at the moment with obvious limitations based on spec. If we want the best for our clients these are the limitations of our time. We are either a professional or we are not.

I did a wedding with 2x 70ds and EOS R and Panasonic GH3 but DSLRs are not ideal to video weddings. They are fine for photography but not for video. The EOSR5 is a stills camera with a few extra video perks. For very short video it would be fine. This is NOT a film camera and no body from canon or Panasonic that I have had has been able to go above 29 minutes which is a real pain in the ass. the batteries run out, the memory cards run out. It's a nightmare! To try to be a videographer and a photographer is too much overkill. I should concentrate on one thing at a time.

    Let's be real about something...
    1 : The A7Siii blown the R5
2 : This is a stills camera, not video. Wrong advertising
3 : If you need a videocamera buy a videocamera

Filming a wedding with R5, no more a problem since this week!
Here is my new R5 hack from this Sunday the 6th of September.
It works with Canon R5 and R6 and with firmware V1.0 and V1.1
It do not lose data, do not force you to open the camera, it's simple and easy.
    www.visionrouge.net/canon-r5-overheating-hack-solved/
It also clearly shows that all these overheat excuses are completely fabricated and an simple flag setup with a time stamp difference is responsible for bricking your camera, on the recording time and cooling time.
So simple to activate that it's embarrassing to keep call this an overheating issue.

Wow. This is the absolute best review of this camera’s actual capabilities. I’ve been looking for a good camera to film short clips of my hikes. I use the iPhone now but want something with higher quality and good IBIS. Some of my hikes can last 3-4 hours (and also in the hot Texas sun sometimes!) so I definitely want something that will last and not overheat. It’s unbelievable to me that a camera company would release a camera boasting about it’s 4k and 8k abilities, and then basically make those settings unusable for most professionals due to overheating. It sounds like they weren’t really ready to release a camera with those options yet after all - at least until they can resolve the overheating issues. So disappointing. Thanks again for this very detailed real-world review! (New subscriber. 🙂)

Thanks for making this Matt! Started doing weddings on Canon DSLRs (til I moved to Cinema cameras) and even THOSE dslrs would overheat out in outdoor hot day weddings at 1080! So, unsurprising this system would too at higher rez! Great channel, great info. -- also, how do you not die shooting weddings outside in Texas heat?? :D

Well, the Atomos Ninja V is crucial. Take out both cards and it runs in 4k30 HQ indefinitively. Also 4k60 should run indefinitively with an Atomos. And for ceremonies, you need the Ninja anyways to supercede the record limit of 29:59s.

Hi Matt - you said you normally shoot short B-Roll clips - but most of what you showed here was long recordings until the camera overheated - like everyone else. I see you recommended the A7Siii - However as a hybrid photo/video person - I cannot take a 12MP camera seriously.
So hopefully - the A74 does a better job at a lower price.
Thanks for the video though. I think it is a bit biased, but it looks like the bias was based more from that overheating frustration.
Have you checked it out now with the firmware updates?
    Another video will be great.
    Adios

Thank you! I hope you can do a similar review on the A7S3 since it does seem to be effected by outside temps. As a Florida wedding videographer, it's a huge consideration.

Planning on it! Texas weather is very similar to Florida's :)

Nothing beats skill and talent. There are many wedding videos on UA-cam now. Kinda short sited to think that EVERY wedding photographer shoots in the same exact way. A more accurate way of stating it, would be to say, YOU don't know how to use the camera without it overheating. Simple. Other people do however. Suggest conversing with your peers and see how they are doing it. The warning doesn't mean it's overheated at or past it's 104 F threshold. Get a FLIR or equal temp measuring device and stay within you published tolerances.

(Sorry) Matt WhoisMatt Johnson.. i bought the R5 for fotografic reasons, to answer your question (who would...?) and have mine August 3th. it is a great still fotografic camera. for people doing video the whole ergonomics of a black magic may be a better solution .. no still cameras for serious video shooting !

They should recall the R5 and try to fix the overheating issues. It would be so good if it didn’t overheat in 4K HQ, but if it can’t even do that it’s practically unusable

This is NOT the complete picture.
    Your review is not complete.
Filming with an external recorder would totally work for a long wedding day. Also the 10bit codecs would be perfect for editing with an external recorder.
The R5 is the perfect photo camera and with an external recorder becomes near perfect video camera.
Only internal shooting is suited for short videos only.
And btw only an amateur would go and shoot a wedding with a single camera. Backup camera is absolutely necessary. I’ve shot over 100 weddings and never used only 1 camera.
If you have 2 R5s you could use one of them in the 24p mode and use the second only for Broll.
Also another point you didn’t mention is the 24p crop mode that is oversampled and also shoots forever without overheating. Of you care for ultimate sharpness and what to shoot a wedding you can relay on it.
Therefore - your review is not honest. You should make a follow up video to paint the complete picture.

I wish I saw this video prior to buying my R6. Today's wedding 90 degree outside ceremony and B roll. It shut down during the ceremony. Luckily I had another camera running but ended up a shooting 1080p with that camera. Even with new firmware update
