    UPDATES SINCE RECORDING THIS VIDEO
    • Canon Log now includes options for C-Log 3 on both the R5 and R6. Avoid using C-Log 3 / Cinema Gamut with the Ninja V.

    • v130 firmware changed the name of "Overheat Control" to "Standby: Low res." (Shoot Menu 8).
    • Another good HDMI cable option is the Zilr Micro. Short length, HDMI 2 10-bit support.

      I tried this setup yesterday and while recording my Atomos ninja would just just down and I'd have to click the shutter button to reactivate it. It actually disrupted the clips I was shooting. Curious if you have had this issue and what the fix is?

    Great video and explanation. I found this really helpful with my R5 and new Ninja V. This worked well for me until it stopped. I haven't completely finished troubleshooting the issues, but the Ninja stopped recording 4K U footage beyond short clips. Looking at the Atomos website I discovered that the WD Blue drives are listed as untested/failed. I returned them and bought instead comparable priced Samsung 870 EVO SATA III SSDs and so far they are recording longer clips, though I need to discover what is happening with the Ninja menu not appearing anymore as it did before. Thanks again.

    Excellent video, Todd. Very educational and great production quality. I was just about to make my own video because I encountered some tricky situations on real shoots with the R6 and the Ninja V and wanted others to be able to avoid the same mistakes I made. However, you beat me to it! Having said that, there are some things that I would add:
    1. The HDMI cable that you recommended is being recognized as HDMI 1.4 on the Ninja, not HDMI 2 (see the Ninja V screen at 3:52). If this is accurate, then the cable may not truly be HDMI 2 amd therefore not able to record 4k60. I recommend the official cable from Atomos, but it is pricey.
    2. You don't mention anything about audio settings. If you don't select the correct input source on the Ninja, you can end up without audio! I found that out the hard way.
    3. People should be aware that visual aids like zebras and peaking on the camera will be BAKED INTO YOUR FOOTAGE when shooting with the Ninja, so if those are important, they have to be turned off on the camera and enabled on the Ninja instead. I also found that out the hard way.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  4 роки тому +1

      Damn! Never noticed 1.4 on the display. The cable claims to be HDMI 2.0, but my Ninja is apparently not seeing it that way. Thanks for pointing that out. Also thanks for the tips regarding audio and zebras/peaking. I once made the same mistake with the latter.

I am having issues with recording past 1 minute - I think my canon R6 is turning off or viewfinder is turning off which leads to the Ninja V saying no input after 1 minute of recording. Was happy to have both screens functional, especially for tap focussing on the back of the R6. The only negative is that you can’t record to your SD cards on your R6. You can only record to an attached SSD drive on your Atomos. Is this the same for the R5😢

I currently own the Canon R6 and it starts to send the overheating warning after 20 minutes or so, with I find so annoying. I really love this camera, but recording interviews with it, is so frustrating. Maybe I can buy the Atomos NV for my R6 and solve my overheating problem, as well as the limited recording time.

    Hi Todd - great video. Thanks. A question about using with R6 - given that the R6's screen is off during record to Ninja V, how do you use auto-focus (incl. eye detect) when recording on the Ninja? I haven't seen anyone talk about this. Thanks so much.

    • @dansstudiox-dance9455
      @dansstudiox-dance9455 2 роки тому

      I have followed this video to the t. Unfortunately had to throw away the footage from yesterdays shoot because the eye detection shows up in my recorded footage. Didn't realise it did until I imported it to my Computer. I don't understand why nobody talks about this?

    • @TheRealBarkinMadd
      @TheRealBarkinMadd 2 роки тому

      @@dansstudiox-dance9455 That's crazy. I agree - how is it that nobody discusses this? I read somewhere that tapping the setup button turns off the eye detection square but I don't know if this is true. Presumably whatever you see from the camera is recorded to the Ninja. Add - I just noticed that by default, tapping the setup turns off eye detect (or face detect - not sure) so that may not be a solution.

    • @dansstudiox-dance9455
      @dansstudiox-dance9455 2 роки тому

      @@TheRealBarkinMadd @TheRealBarkinMadd I found out the solution by rewatching the video. It has to do with the HDMI display option to turn on or off the display of the camera. When you turn it off all visual information will be forwarded over HDMI (I'm assuming) and there lies the problem. Unfortunately it isn't mentioned anywhere so that's a mistake from my part. So now you (and I) know... You have no choice if recording externally.

    • @TheRealBarkinMadd
      @TheRealBarkinMadd 2 роки тому

      @@dansstudiox-dance9455 I have the Ninja V now and what I have found is that the screen on the camera remains active during external recording with the R6, however the menus go to the Ninja. Interestingly, the Q-menu does not go to the Ninja so you can use the R6 touch screen for that. During external recording you can use the the R6 touch screen for selecting object tracking.

    I'm looking to buy one of these for my R5 and would love some advice:
    1 does the Ninja screen allow for touch to focus?
    2 if no to above, does the camera LCD stay on simultaneously so I can use touch to focus?
    3 if no to #2, how do you go about directing focus when it goes wayward as it inevitably does?
    4 does the camera record to both the Ninja and the internal card at the same time so you are getting a redundancy/backup?
    These are some deal breaker questions for me before I purchase.
    Thanks in advance

      1. No
      2.yes
      3--
      4. It only records to the ninja. Not the sad card simultaneously.
      I purchased it and it makes a huge difference for my EOSR and I’m getting the R5 soon.
      Hope this helps it’s a fantastic setup that you will not regret

    Hi! I am still learning how to set up my Atomos Ninja V with my R6, but, how can I record audio? Could that be possible? The initial tests I did, record only video with no sound from the camera. Also, what is the difference between ProRes and ProRes Raw in terms of quality? thanks

    Great video thank you. Can you suggest a variable ND for the Canon F2 28-70? Can't find one since the 95mm thread is 1mm pitch and not 0,75mm as normal filter threads. Thanks!

      That's only on the camera LCD. HOWEVER, the Ninja V has focus peaking you can turn on (and different modes of peaking too). One mode turns the image black and white and highlights focus areas in red. I love using that when looking at the Ninja from a distance and need to move something in the shot to be in focus.

    Hi complete newbie and want to capture and edit ProRes 422 LT. if I use a R6mkII using a Ninja can I capture in ProRes 422 LT like you showed 4:24? Does this apply to R6II?
    Also is editing in clog .265 bad quality or bogs a mbp M1 Max down? If you apply the lut in the ninja will it be baked into the footage?
    Thank you

    Hello Todd. Thanks for the video. Great information. Would you recommend the same coiled cable when using a Ronin RS2 and the R5? Or would that mess up the balance on the Ronin?

    Just sub'd. I shoot the R6 full time professionally 5 days a week and leaning towards the Ninja V and not because of overheating or the 30min limit of recording. I'm looking for a quicker and easier codec to work with when editing and the 4k 60fps IPB is not that efficient even when working with a RTX 2080 GPU.

      Did you get the Atmos and tried recording 4k 60fps? I heard there are issues with 60fps and doesn't work great with 4k 60fps. Can you please confirm?

      @@vamsiclicks3948 I did get it and have had no problems with 4k 60fps. I did spend the extra $99 and bought the h265 codec firmware upgrade for when I do want to shoot a smaller codec on it, which I do most of the time for size sake. I will tell you I shoot mostly internal on the R6 since it has dual card back up and atomos doesn't. I have events coming up where the atomos will most likely be the better route. If I can find a way to record on the R6 and the atomos I would. Otherwise I may have to go cinema camera down the line.

      @@JaredHoyman Thanks for the info. I really don't need an external screen as I do most of my video work on gimbal and I want it to be light. The only reason I am looking at Atomos is that I can record in ProRes format so that my editing in Mac will be flawless and quick. Did you find much difference when compared to recording directly to R6 vs Atomos?

      I had to re-acquaint myself again with these settings since I haven't used my Ninja in quite awhile and ended up getting the V+ . It's great that I can just use your video as my library reference ;) I totally appreciate it! I'll be doing a tutorial and review in January with the Ninja V+ in 6k Raw with the R6 II. You don't need a a ninja V till you need a ninja v ;) Keep up the excellent work my friend!

    I have a Canon R6 and purchased the Ninja V based primarily on your video, especially the opening message in your video and in your UA-cam description about no overheating. I've followed all of your recommended settings precisely, plus bought all the accessories you recommended, but can only record 10 mins, 12 sec. of 4k @ 23.98p before the Ninja V overheats and disconnects from my R6. Atomos customer service has poorly responded at this point, but hopefully they will. In the interim, i'm curious as to what you based your statement on that the R6 could record 4k externally to the Ninja V "without time limits or overheating?"
