Everyone: Canon delivers another lemon.
Atomos: Thank you Canon!!!
could be worse... could be crippled to 12 MP! Yuck!
@@77dris nikon d4 was 16mp, many professionals shot that for years. I've shot photography jobs on my a7sii before and no client has ever said "thats great, but wish there where more megapixels". as someone who mainly shoots video with some photos, I am so glad sony went with 12mp....especially with the 15 stops (13 usable) of dynamic range
I'm all ready a fan to you channel! This is exactly the video instruction I was looking for since I've bought my Ninja V just yesterday and my Canon EOS R5 will be in my hands next week! I want to record longer interviews with my mother, she's 83 and she's starting to forget things unfortunately. So thanks for sharing this mate!!
That’s interesting to read Isaac. I‘m a pro photographer for 30 years but only now start filming. Since I own almost the whole Nikon glasses range... it’s quite a step for me to invest in a different system (Nikon for video doesn’t convince me though). So I‘m very close to order a r5 with only the 15-35 and the 85/1.2 RF lenses and keep my Nikons for all the rest. But the whole reason I answer you is because my first big project with my new gear will be: My mom turns 80 this year and I want to make a documentary on her life and interview her for the most parts. So your post kinda struck me about this similarity.
People at Canon should give you some money lol
Nicely done
I doubt Canon is grateful. This appears to be a software issue and not a hardware one. Someone on an online forum tried to replicate this result and was unsuccessful. The camera would overheat. He then noticed that he was using PAL 4k25HQ. He then switched to NTSC 4k30HQ and replicated the result. Does this make sense to you?
It's artificial overheating programmed in the firmware. Canon wants to protect its cinema cameras, they are not happy about this.
@@KevKlopper exactly
This is epic!! As an EOS R user looking to transition to the R5, this was very helpful. I was thinking I'll have to get rid of all my RF lenses and move over to Sony with all this overheating talk in the last 2 weeks. I hope Canon is listening and will these issues in an upcoming firmware update, add Clog2 or Clog3 to give the dynamic range, and also remove the annoying 30 minutes record limit that shouldn't be there. Having said that, the Ninja V makes a lot of sense and seems like a great investment. Thank you again!
Sony does make an offer that's hard to refuse with the A7S3, especially for creators who want to remain light & nimble.
@@NoLifeDigital Well said. I was an A7S2 user for a long time. Sold off all my lenses after a while, moved over to the GH5, and then to Canon R. Made a bet on the RF mount because I love the 15-35 with the IS and the 28-70 f2. For the type of content I do in a studio setting, the Ninja V makes sense regardless if it's for the R5 or A7s3. The codec is great. tbh. It feels like we should be investing in Atomos Stock. Cheers!
I am in the same boat. NL saved Canon a customer. I already have a atomos as a eos R user . Won’t miss staying light. I would rather record long form to atomos for prores even with the Sony. Much easier to edit. I do wish we got a full HDMI
@@RockyMaiviaMiami Yes. Full HDMI would be really nice. I'm curious whether the R5 has HDMI 2.1 or 2.0 for future potential. Haven't been able to find any answer to that yet
@@MarioTomicOfficial In the video you see Atomos captures it at 2.0 - so I don't think we'll get 4K120/8K from the R5, ever.
I just want it to be 6 months from now, in a world where we've figured out all these quarks and Canon has decided its all firmware fixable :)
I hope Canon knows we're all rooting for them!
Are we there yet?!🤞🏻
So one more month?
It's been 10 months. Have we achieved world peace?
@@Dartheomus yep!!
Wow this is over a year old. Some of the menus changed. Still, thanks for the help kind, sir. Something I learned and want to share:
The yellow menu image of a wrench, page 2, "power saving" option, click it, and set "auto power off" to "disable". This was preventing my camera from recording for long periods.
other than that, happy recording!
Here take this award ! 🏆
For anyone still tracking this stuff..... I just got about 3.5 hrs until it overheated/shutdown in 4K/24/HQ on the Ninja indoors @ 70 degrees ... then I let it cool off for about 5 mins ... turned back on, it had the "5:00" timer showing -- BUT got well over another hour in 4K/24/HQ on the Ninja. So pushing 5 HOURS continuous recording with ONE 5 minute break around 3.5 hrs. Running firmware 1.1.1 on the R5, using Canon batteries (about 1.25-1.5hrs each), keeping in both the cards during recording (not writing to them), manual focus, IBIS on, and the R5 screen off during recording and I left the screen swiveled out so it wasn't trapping heat in the back of the camera.
What about with the Autofocus on? And if you have the LCD back on to check focus/adjust settings does it impact recording time?
@@24framestime Sorry I didn't test that with autofocus on but if I ever do I will let you know! I've heard that having the LCD continually on will increase overheating times, but with a Ninja, that's just not needed as the Ninja is your monitor that you can keep track of your focus peaking with. I'm assuming running and gunning and having to use the LCD screen more then yeah the R5 won't last 4-5 hours continuous but for me never filmed like that for the type of work i do.
@@Malick333 but still you have to use the R5’s LCD screen to change settings, set white balance and so on… If you do that in between takes does it impact your recording times and/or makes the camera shutdown?
@@24framestime correct, for menu only settings, I do need to use the LCD or setting autofocus points, but you can set the LCD display to turn off after 1-2 mins and that should minimize any heat from it staying on. Basically anytime you have the LCD on, it's going to impact recording times ... so if you leave it on a lot, it should have a significant impact. If you use it infrequently, minimal impact. Exactly how much I can't say as didn't test it in that way in the test above. I film documentaries so I've just never had my camera left on permanently for hours on end.... unless I'm doing long interviews which is why I tested it in the manner i did 7 months ago. I'm not concerned at all about overheating with the Ninja in non-interview settings. Maybe I'm wrong though! But after that test, I'm definitely not concerned at all about the R5 overheating in 3+ hour interviews I sometimes do.
@@Malick333 I’m really glad I can chat with you because I’m refraining from buying the R5 for a documentary that I want to shoot this summer, as I’m afraid of this overheating issue. I’m intending to record with a Ninja V+ run & gun for extended long days of 8K shooting ranging from 8am till 6pm. I’m just afraid it will fail on me… Do you say it’s gonna be possible and I shouldn’t fear that issue and buy it?
Your comments @13:24 are perfect! I like not to think about the technology at my 62 years of age, I just want to produce art. This tutorial has helped my production quality to no end . . . . My setup is with the ATEM 4K switcher and needing live capturing for events at conferences. I needed this kind of advice to record ISO's and feed my ATEM input. I can't thank you enough for your advice.
Nice workflow demonstration, well done!
I'm going to mention you in my next R5 review on the movie mode.
I just bought atomos ninja after watching this video. EOS R5 will be re-evaluated for being able to shoot the highest quality video without fever. Thank you.
Palpatine -> "Recording... UNLIMITEDDDDDD RECORDINGGGGG!!!"
I did the same setup, doing some test shots where I was checking the audio setup, shot about 6 short clips 2-10 minutes in length each and stopping in between for 5-10 minutes each time, and then I did an extended run test to see how long I could record, and I got 45 minutes of record time before the camera shut down. That was with a dummy battery and external recording only, in 4k HQ mode, so if you think you are going to be able to run your R5 for extended periods, under "optimal conditions", I am sorry to say you probably wont. At least I wasn't able to. Also, look around at the log settings config for the atomos, doing the suggested setup her actually reduces the DR and will clip earlier. Leaving log off and legalize is the way to match the internal image and optimize the DR.
Ditto to my comment above: I had the same problem, but I was triggering record from the camera. I read somewhere to always trigger from the Ninja; I recalled that, stopped triggering from the camera and I got longer record times. I ended the recording after a 90min test (this was started DIRECTLY after starting to get the overheat warning) stopping only to change batteries, no more overheat warnings.
thanks for the video. It helped me a lot in deciding between Canon R5 and R5C. I think the R5 and Ninja is the better option.
Thanks for the in depth explanation man. I would definitely be intrigued to see a video about tweaking settings in normal 4K to mirror 4K HQ. would be cool to see. I don’t know if I can shell out the extra cash for the Ninja as well. 🤦♂️
For whatever its worth. I find that adding a little sharpening in Resolve ( the setting is 47 that I use in the Color Tab) makes the regular 4k footage look really solid.
Thanks for the help!
don't break the R5.....
U should make a full video about the live streem set up
Great job! We now have a way to record 4K for hours on end at the racetrack! Knew we bought the correct camera in the R5 vs. the sony a7s3 thanks!
LOL. So $3800 +another $600-1000 Ninja 5 to get unlimited 4k is a better buy than a camera that can do this in-camera? 🤔
@@sosomelodies659 Footage is better from Canon R5, and you get a 45MP camera too, so yes :)
@@ravspinder5187 tell you what, do your own test footage and show us why it's better.
Soso Melodies dude I’m not doing your work for you - there’s tons of resources that show the difference in video quality.
We are no camera experts, just first time buyers of this type of gear. As a average consumer standpoint, this setup provides us with excellent glass and great pictures which helps us expand our business. These video features are just another bonus. We were going to buy an external recorder anyways for video so now we don't have to buy the CF express card. Overall great investment for us!
Well your channel is gonna grow really big really soon
Thanks for the support bruv
@@NoLifeDigital so does the r5 4k 60 hq unlimited work with atomos unlimited
I had mine connected to my R5C and working fine. Recording and more. Fired it up today and now it says "no input" changed three cables and more and still won't connect. Any thoughts?
EOS R6 will stop outputting over HDMI after 30 minutes. Under "Power saving", the "Display off" cannot be disabled, but only increased to a maximum of 30 minutes. After this, unless you keep clicking this shutter once in a while, the EOS R5/R6 will power off and the output to the Atomos recorder over HDMI will be stopped. Is this fixed by picking the dual screen option under "HDMI display" on page 8?
Never had this issue. Just turn off “Auto power off” in Power saving, set Display off and Viewfinder off to their minimal settings. Camera should run, outputting, till the battery dies.
Fantastic. Thanks for all that info and great find. I am not a video guy (yet) but when I get to that in the near future I will definitely get a Ninja V and set it up like this
Dude, great work. This has been an awesome journey to follow. I think finding this work around will raise some eyebrows and cause some possible positive change for these cameras. Fingers crossed for that firmware!
Great video, how long can you go with 4k 60
unlimited
A lot of people are also interested in the R6.
Could you do some tests on it as well?
Yes, a follow up video on the R6 will help dispel any myths out there about the R6 overheating. There's a lot of conflicting info out there on the R6.
Great video, just one question. Does the excellent face and eye af from the cam holds up nice via ninja v?
Love my R5. Would like to see how you sharpen the non-HQ to resemble the HQ recordings!
This camera has fit seemlessly into my workflow!
Thanks for this video, answered my questions about 4k@120. Also reaffirmed my decision to sell my 1dx2 and get an a7s3.
well done homie, subbed.
another great video sir, and yes please, more instructional content on the ninja itself........ i see everyone complaining about needing one with the r5 , but im thinking how cool having one is for any camera for many reasons especially the added features for recording, love the ability to pre

Great vid mate. Do you know if there is a way to record in 4K 100p (I’m in Australia)? I’m into sports and want to be able to do some slow motion in post. Keep up the good work!
I'm just starting with R5C and ninja V+. It's a lot to take in.
Dear Sir, I used your video to set up my Canon R5 and Ninja 5+ and it works great. I have never found anyone who sets up the Canon R5 mkii with a Atomos Ultra. Are the settings the same for this new Canon R5-MKii ??? Please advise. I have not got my R5MKii to work with the Ultra yet. Any suggestions? Sincerely, JRS
6:50 - I like that you mentioned Clog... I have the EOS-R and I tried EOS Original vs Neutral and ironically I found "Neutral" to have more punch/contrast and also a magenta/red shift. I found EOS Original to be more flat and "neutral"... ironic.
Neutral matches the C300II, C200, etc; modern Cinema EOS cameras. Also, Canon doesn’t explicitly say this but the Neutral color matrix is also how you get 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 out of the R via HDMI.
Hey doggie. I shoot on a c70 and was on a a7s3 but sold it for an R5 to better B-Cam for my c70. Thanks for this
I tried this.. but still the camera over heated and shut down after one hour
Shame
It's a shame are you still limited but can.it record longer
@@maxmaxmaxgoon5602 well.. actually this happened only once for unknown reasons.. after that it worked fine
@@AhmedBehiry So will atomos and r5 record 4k 60 hq for 3 hours plus
@@maxmaxmaxgoon5602 I don't think I'll need to try this.. my body can't work in front of the camera for one hour :D
Thanks it was excellent tutorial. If I have CF and SD cards in the camera, will I have to choose where to record?
Great video, has the HDMI screen only bug been fixed? And is that a Canon or Atomos bug? Also, while 8K can’t be recorded to the Atomos, have you compared 8K to 4K HQ external? Some say they are very close and others say 8K raw is noticeably better?
Thanks for the video. I have a question I got my atomos ninja v lately for my canon r 6 but the file in the ssd are too large compare to the file in the sd of the camera. Did I do something wrong or what should I do ? Thanks in advance
What’s the room temp? Also look forward to the outdoor tests!
Fantastic video man. Thx so much
So according to the specs, you are not getting 10bit 422 out of the hdmi unless you hit record on the camera. According to Canon the image is a lower quality for display only, so it helps the camera not overheat in the standby mode. Could you please confirm it is true 10bit 422 coming out of the cameras hdmi when in standby mode? If it really is the full res and color space it is a total game changer for this camera.
Hi NoLifeDigital, thank you so much for the helpful video. Do you always have to tap the record button on the Atomos Ninja V to record or is there a way to trigger the external recording on the R5 camera? Have a great day.
So are we supposed to set the screen auto off to a certain time? I would normally keep it on always, but it looks like for long form recording like this we want the camera screen to shut off after a few minutes?
Hey mate, great video, What do you recommend from canon cinema gamut and rec 709.? I have seen a couple different views on it. Thanks
The dislikes are from Sony Fanboys who don't want us to succeed lol. 😂
I use my EOSR with the ninja v. Idk if I should upgrade to the C70 or R5. Thoughts?
Hey man! Really helpful information! Does this work for R6 too?
Thanks! Do you have a link to the grip you showed?
Nice work! I didn’t fully get the H264 argument at 6:29 - the camera does its downsampling thing etc. but the HDMI output signal is uncompressed right? Then Ninja compresses it to ProRes.
Correct - I meant to say you don't need to work with the heavy h265 internal file, by recording externally in Prores (not h264 which was a misspeak).
Indeed
Debating between the canon eos r6 and the Sony a7iii any advice? I am a hybrid shooter.
Great video and i'm going to set this up on my r6
Dude you’re awesome really enjoying these helpful videos.
Sorry I know this is off topic but I’m hoping you’d know. With the R5 and ninja V what’s the longest I can expect to be able to record in 1080 24p in an 8 bit format. I don’t need crazy high quality footage but I do need long duration. I’m searching for a solution to get about 6 hours record time.
Can you see if you run the 4k to ninja for a bit without card, then pop the cfexpress in and see how much 4k 120 it’s allowing?
so what you're saying is I get to keep my Panasonic S1h? ( ProRes Raw 6k with this setup). Awesome!!
Thanks for video, How much does the atmos cost? Can you share a link to buy one similar to yours?
Yes, HDR PQ mode review please
Thank's a lot! Can you do the same test with shooting 4k 60 fps video external into recorder without sd or CFexpress card with screen of the camera off? How many minutes or hours camera can shoot video in such way without overheating?
Wayne... Do you know whether shooting photos to the SD card only, without CF Express card in, affects the available time of 4k 120fps? Let's say, we shoot photos to the SD for an hour and then decide to pop CF Express in to take some 4k slow-mo footage and possibly take the CF Express out again when done with video.
I'll be testing this soon. Stay tuned!
Or one CFEXPRESS card for photo and another one for video. Two hours photo shooting makes the CFEXPRESS card hot. Swap a cool CFEXPRESS card for video.
Good video mate! question: is there a way to get 8K from the R5 with an external recorder? (may be the Ninja 7?)... and anyway to go around to the get the best quality 4K 120 fps also using an external recorder...? thank you!
I'v been waiting for this! Thanks!
Thanks for showing us your setup. Can you give us a total price for your setup? Including the media and lens costs? I’m curious if I should buy the C300 instead.
Hi can you run a test to check out if after shooting internal and getting the overheating issue at 8k raw, if it resets the internal canon time limit after shooting a minute with the ninja? Had this idea after viewing the tape solution with the toothpicker.
Do dual record ssd and season simultaneously I do weddings and need that feature
On my Canon EOS R I ran into an issue with the Atomos. When I have the Ninja V plugged into the R and I am in 4k 23.976fps the ninja v records at 29.97fps... It is super weird, so I would always have to switch into true 24p on the R. Do you know if this issue is still present with the R5?
Can you trigger the atomos using the camera or a gimbal without cards in the camera, or are you bypassing the camera and just pressing record on the atomos screen?
Thank you. This is the first video of a demo of a current camera setup with a cageless rig I’ve seen on UA-cam. I’ve been looking for a micro hdmi lock for my 15mm rod cageless rig for my Panasonic S5 as I plan to get a Ninja V. I’m not a huge fan of cages. Do you know if there is any accessory in the market that will work for any other top end cameras with micro hdmi like the canon hmdi lock you mentioned in this video? Or is this a canon exclusive?
Thanks for your great help with this setup! You are keeping the camera on the buy list. I would like to see the 4k vs 4kHQ comparison and how good normal 4k can look in comparison. Thank you.
There’s definitely a difference but like always, it depends on the user’s final viewing platform. I did a test on my son’s face and you can notice the difference in his eyebrows: ua-cam.com/video/43t7u-f-Aks/v-deo.html
You can use a PD batterie that can deliver 45w or more with the R5 so no need to dummy batterie
Just seeking clarification and confirmation. In 8k mode only 4k is output to the HDMI. As 4kHQ is sampled 8k, is that 8k sampled 4kHQ sent to the HDMI or is it the same 4k as in the 8k mode? I was expecting the 4k (line skipped?) output not 4kHQ from sampled 8k.
Any idea what I could be doing wrong? I've followed all of these steps exactly but it still seems to overheat. The only difference is that I'm using an HDMI to Micro HDMI Cable instead of an adapter. Could that have anything to do with it?
Me too. Ive tried it many times but all I can get out of it is roughly 40 mins
@@jimbo9576 Are you also using an HDMI to Micro HDMI? I don't see why that would be affecting it but it's all I can think of.
@@culter35 yes, I am, I cant see how that could affect anything though. everything else seems to be the same but I cant get it to go past 40 minutes
@@jimbo9576 Funny, I can't even get mine to 40 minutes. Seems to be pretty inconsistent.
Interesting, are you ensuring HDMI display is not set to external only, and are you running on battery?
I would love to see how close you get the regular 4K to the 4K HQ!
Great review man, subbed
Keep working on crushing that buyer's remorse.🤣
Love the channel name
Thanks a lot for this information, really helpful, btw, can you check again the external recording clips, are they oversampled? Some test says even set HQ mode, maybe there is some trick like pixel combined when external recording。
If I wanted to use the R5 as a hybrid camera for photos and video, how does putting back in the cards and while recording from the ninja take photos from the R5 affect the record time of 4K60 HQ.
Also since my main area for weddings is photography but would like to get 4k60 can I record with the ninja by putting it on a belt clip instead of onto of the camera?
Hello NoLife, can you please provide a link to the red grip you are using? Thanks so much!

Can you test please R6 with Ninja V without cards and in 4K60?

Hey man great video! I am shooting 4K DCI 60fps with the ninja v, occasionally switching between cropped modes...my R5 is still overheating fairly quickly. Any suggestions? Love your content man!
Hey there
Great video!! You can do the same on the R6?
I hope someone test this camera on the north pole or the south pole or some place where it is very cold, would be fun to see the times before it overheats then. Just a crazy idea.
I thought Log/HDR should be off unless you want to Ninja to process your HDR
How do you get the time without your camera automatically shutting off?
If I wanted to do this same setup hybrid style (shooting stills to card and video to the Atomos) how would this change my time, and how would the settings differ?
Hi,
What brand is the camera holder you use ? The one which sits on the table in the above video?
When you have view assist on within camera, does this get sent over the HDMI signal too, or is it just the clean LOG image? Great video!
LOG view assist does NOT alter the image at all, but be careful about in-camera zebras. Those DO get sent over and are recorded. I recommend turning those off (obviously) and just using the Ninja’s zebras.
Keep it up. Regards from India
So we can’t do 4k 120 with setup. But can we do 4k 60 HQ with this setup? Thanks for the great video.
Kenneth Lui yes 4k60fps unlimited
@@marioslrzn I keep having dropped frames after 20-30 secs when doing 4K HQ 60fps... Don't know what's happening. All firmwares updated, SSD formatted... can't find what's the issue... :(
Dear No Life awesome guy (didn’t get your name yet - sry) Thank you for your very helpful videos on the r5 🙏🏻 I habe one question: you mentioned having turned off the overheat warning 🤔 Isn’t that like turning of your tire pressure warnings in the car and the when running a flat tire just not knowing- the tire is flat though nevertheless you just don’t know about it? Or did I miss something?
Thanks alot..... My Canon R5 is coming Tuesday
My Ninja is recording exactly 1 minute and then turning off. Is there some setting I am missing? I did this 4 times and it did the same thing each time.
Can you set continues autofocus when recording on ninja without cards (so the camera is not recording itself)?
Thanks in advance for the answer.
At the end of the day is it really even worth it over the EOS R which has no issues? Seems like a lot of work for "dealing with the crop" it would be great to see a 4k comparison of 4K HQ Vs. EOS R 4k. Thanks for the vids!
I love the R (that's what this video was shot with). Throwing a speedbooster on it gets you FF 4K, and adding a Ninja gets you 10-bit. The only thing you really lose out on is 4K120, which is extremely limited, and the amazing IBIS in the R5. It's a hell of a value though!
Hq is way better
@@NoLifeDigital Thanks for the response! Go pro 240 is hard to beat in high light situations and it's currently 118 where I'm at so the heat issues scare me a lot., beginning to think this camera cant offer much more then the eosr besides a full frame and slightly sharper image :(. I agree with speed boost or... just use a wider lens!
With your described setup I got 40 min before overheating. I had the camera LCD on the whole time though. Did you have your camera LCD on the entire length of the recording or did it turn off after a certain time? Thank you
i re-tested with the LCD set to turn off after 30 seconds, and turning it on periodically. I was then able to record for about 2 hours, until the camera battery died. Thank you for your video.
