The thing about the 2.0l V10 that is most exciting is the fact that this is real automotive engineering and while it's probably a dry subject for most, I would actually enjoy hearing about some of the development that is going on. The magic of UA-cam is often that peak behind the curtain and being able to 'see' real-life engine development would be so cool. Seeing both come to fruition would be incredible.
as an engineering student completely agree, and after watching this i understand why its taking the amount of time it is. developing something you already have a base for is hard enough, starting essentially from scratch with something as complicated as an engine is extremely difficult. especially with trying to keep an engine happy at as high of an rpm as this would rev. you can pay an engineer as much as you want but it wont make the development much faster, were not robots lol

Have a chat with Allen Millyard about building up a V10 based on a motorcycle engine. It would be smaller, probably cheaper, but adapting the gearbox is the tricky part, but Allen's a clever man.
The engine itself isn't the issue. They have a V10 ready to go. It's 30k to 50k to get the thing fully and properly _installed_ into the MX5. Having Allen on board to create a custom twin Ford/Volvo inline 5 (4 liter V10) doesn't solve the cost issue.
Love the idea. Sounds a lot like something Clarkson would've tried back when he was fitting 'vette V8s to blenders and rocking chairs (although the MX-5 is more up Hammond's street to be fair). But I see how 30 to 50 k is a bit much. So, yeah, don't rush either of the projects - but please, don't bin them either, just take the time it takes and let's have the world's first two V10 MX-5.
thanks for the update, Mike and Drivetribe team. I guessed that it would be just a waiting game for the mk 2 MX-5, but it was nice to hear more about that project, and get an update on the mk 1 as well. Looking forward to another video in 6/12 months time about the v10 projects.
Its quite mad seeing this happen but the engine development... just amazing they are cracking on with it. Being able to develop the a modular engine is that way, me (former MK1 MX-5 owner) and my dad (mechanic of 30 years) are both looking forward to see hopefully both being done!
Perfect time for a update, I was getting curious about the project just the other week while watching the video of Izzy's Mini getting a upgrade, I'd completely forgotten about it before that video.
When I was living in California, got to see a few Monster Miata V8 conversions. Those used the Mustang V8, or one from the Corvette. Wider wheels and tires under fender flares, and beefed up frame rails to handle the power. They would easily roast the tires, and probably get you in trouble quickly with a bit too much throttle. While the BMW motor sounds cool, you could end up with something undriveable.
Probably the best update yet. Thanks so much for sharing. Absolutely frothing for the Connaught but gives me more time to save up so no dramas. Plenty of other stuff I can be getting on with.
Is it just me or is the more interesting story that amazing design of the Connaught Type D. That car developed into a what if restomod. Seriously, that thing is awesome!
the only people complaining about this not moving forward are those "bought, not built" people. they dont get that it takes labour and research to make a non-production engine a reality. wealth does not negate ignorance.
Crank lubrication is easily solved by using a cheaper and simpler standard crankshaft. I suspect cooling is isn't actually temperature but sealing, VW apparently spent a lot of time keeping their VR6 coolant inside the right parts of the engine. It would be very interesting to see what Villers are doing. A real, working, 2.0 V10 would be awesome in a Caterham 7.
Don't rush it. Get it done. Let's hear that leetil V10 scream once it's done. Let us know what issues they keep finding too. That's always fun to hear about.
I bet that a lot of people would donate just to see it happen if you started a crowdfunding initiative for the NA with the M5 V10. I'm not quite familiar with the whole legal aspect of a project like that in the UK but it could be worth a shot and similar things have worked for other projects before.
Problem is would you rather donate to someone with mechanical talent, passion and ambition to do it and films the work instead of someone who pays a shop to do it and drives off with the car. But maybe thats just me.
If you could spin this off to sell conversion kits for the swap, this might help you start a new venture. CANBUS adapter harnesses, brackets, different wires and little bits are all that’s left to make the project whole. If you’re that passionate about it, it might just be worth to take a chance on yourself!
Sorry Mike having dealt with engineers professionally before it is unlikely they will ever make a V10. They are doing Engineering Learning mode, they are enjoying the process of learning and not actually making something. It’s very common when you have engineers running the show and not business managers. What most likely happens is they will find something that they can licence to major brands but as ICE are on the way out probably not. It really is a business discipline thing and they don’t have it they will continue to change the goal post until it runs out of cash.
There is a very cheap, high revving engine that you could get from the US easily. That being the Cosworth Vega engine. If you got one of those with the matching transmission, put some bigger cams and ITBs on it and a modern ECU, you'd have a lightweight, 200+hp, 8000 RPM engine for the MX5. And it's roughly the size of the original engine. It's not a V10 but it would still be super cool. A bit more difficult would be to take two Cosworth Vega cylinder heads and have Dart or another company that makes custom blocks and cranks make a V8 block and crank. The Cosworth Vega is a timing belt engine, it wouldn't be too difficult fo have a V8 block built for those heads. And if the 4 cylinder can make 200 horsepower easily naturally aspirated, then the V8 should make 400 just as easily.
@@TachankaRUS762 It's probably cheaper to go for a T5 Volvo engine if they are some of them over there. You get a turbo'd 5 cyl of the box with more than enough power for a Miata, and you can easily build 3-400hp pretty cheap, which is a death trap in a Miata lol
