Car looked very tidy in the photos, nice shade of red, sports exhaust, mint factory 5 spoke alloys, sweet. So i messaged him to see if we could see the car this weekend, all good. Once we got closer to home we got a strong stink of fuel, i figured it's been ok this far, last bit of the trip she'll be right, down the driveway and the smell was very very strong, figured it would be wise to let the car cooldown a bit first. 49:36 Window tint use case: I got my Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake 200d (2022) with factory tint at the back. Two reasons for this: 1) The only people I'll carry at the back are carpoolers I pick up when I drive very long distances (500+mi/day). The dark windows combined with the black roof liner put my passengers in some sort of a cosy cocoon in which they almost inevitably fall asleep. I can, then, drive peacefully without being bothered by their chitchat, their phone calls or the videos they would be watching on their phones without headphones. 2) I use my car as a lightweight camper van, sometimes leaving for more than 2 weeks on the roads of Europe, sleeping on a mattress at the back, with real pillows and proper sheets. The dark windows and black roof liner allow me to park anywhere and not risk being seen naked by a hiker passing by or a family of 5 parking next to me. It also keeps my car significantly cooler in the summer, which is perfect for those sunny mornings I want to sleep in. I will never not have an estate car without window tint at the back.

I get Will's take completely. I'd rather be King of the chavs than the poorest guy at the golf club. I usually look for the step down from the top spec model as top specs generally depriciate slower (so ST instead of RS, GTI instead of R, etc.) and find cars of these specs within my budget and pain tolerance. I've never understood people who would buy, for example, a base spec polo over an ibiza FR, or even a polo GTI that's the same generation, just a couple of years older. I instantly assume those guys like football.
For the first time in many months I can say cars actually ruled my week. Got my MX5s map finally finished. Peaks at 22psi with a VF35 turbo and I sent my Mini R53 away to get the clutch done along with a front subframe refresh, first time I've ever sent one of my cars to someone else to get work done. But it feels good for a change not getting stressed out about working on it.
Come to Australia and you will realize why you would have windows tinted. You have no sun in the UK! Heatwaves of 35°c Ha that's a nice spring day here!
A light tint means I don't need to wear sunglasses over my regular glasses, or pay for the expensive transition lenses. It also provides a UV barrier, which keeps the interior of car cooler; this is important here in Kansas, where we were over 90 degrees Fahrenheit every day this entire summer (and much of the spring and fall so far), and often over 100 degrees. Just my two cents.
@@tadassmolskas3014 I can totally understand your point, but for example, I "tinted" all of my windows with 80% transparency tint for Infrared reflection, and despite the fact that all my windows are basically clear, I don't have the burning sensation on my face and arms when I travel mid summer day at 45 degrees. It really made a difference. Also, this is for Will and Edwin, at the shop where I tinted my windows, almost any car with panoramic sunroof had it tinted, because it's freaking insane otherwise, it's just too hot.
Tinted front side and windscreen would be illegal in the UK, pretty much every car away from boggo spec city cars come tinted to the max allowable as standard, so sunglasses still needed here
@@HiruS22 Not illegal in the States, unless they are tinted to a mirrored state, or too dark to see into, which is still pretty dark. And in practice, police won't pull you over for tint that's too dark; they'd have to prove it, and that is not something they're equipped for. Basically, if they can make out your profile, you're good.
Love the discussion on Will’s OCD organisation for service history… the history for my E36 is absolutely incredible right up to the old tyre receipts and the hotel receipts from when the original owner stayed in Scotland holidaying after picking the car up from Aberdeen!
20:30 funny story I can relate to, I live in Australia and I bought a Holden Calais as my first car (Calais is a fancy trim package for the Holden Commodore) and it had the supercharged V6 engine. In Australian slang, the Buick/Ecotec 3.8-litre V6 engines are often referred to as "mangs" or a "mang mang" or something to this effect. This is because "mang" is the sound they make when they bounce off the rev limiter. So I began calling my Holden Calais "the mang" and eventually this terminology stuck on amongst my friends and family to the point where my father who is in his mid-60s would ask "Will you be taking the mang today??". I'm not sure if he ever found out what mang really meant 😆
Absolutely no one's gonna read this comment but these guys are so funny.... The final segment regarding the red & blue of the heating controller is so good...
I bought the lowest spec Audi S5 in the UK, I genuinely think the guy who bought it new walked into the dealer to buy a diesel A5 but got talked into an S5 but couldn’t afford to buy any packs or extras. The only spec I cared about though was the 4.2 v8 which I immediately put a custom exhaust on which woke up all the neighbours when I went to work.
"I bought another one..." American fan here with legit TDC keychain in hand. I feel your love of cars, and my stories are all about body off VW Beetle resto work in the 90s. Cheers!
Edwin (whose legs barely fit within the wide camera shot): "You don't see a sunroof when you look at a car." Probably true for Mr. Kersten, but dude, you could see a sunroof on a double-decker bus! 😂❤
Great listen gents. Edwin, my e61 with it's factory privacy pack looks spot on with its window tints. Ben - "Will lives less far away than me". Closer then.

I can relate to edwin on not letting cars go, ive had people knock my door and offer me nearly double what my project car is worth but ive turned them all away, the worst part is its only an old honda civic😂
Can definately tell how old someone is by how they learnt what they know. Used to love the forums and spent MANY hours everyday on them. Met loads of people through them all over the country and became mates with a few more. Sadly everything is now on Facebook and that community feeling etc is gone.
Car insurance actually does make sense, it just doesn't work how people expect it to. Corsas are written off a lot, so they are more risk, Aston Martins are usually babied by their ownsers, so are statistically low risk.
Excellent, another podcast worth listening to, I can add to my podcast app instead of watching on UA-cam. Hope you guys will be more reliable than Alex at sticking to schedule
I find the overall driving experience more comfortable with window tints. In my country most people have their high beams on all the time so it prevents glare. In summers we get nearly 50C temperatures so tint helps with a bit of heat deflection. Imagine driving a clear car in direct sunlight with that kind of temperature.
@@Sithhy Correct, more of an impact for air cooled cars but modern cars do have oil coolers; in Australia if you’re towing the first rule is upgrade all the oil coolers, engine and gearbox as factory coolers just don’t cut it.
I’m with Will when it comes to car spec! I recently bought a new daily. It’s a BMW E91 320d m sport plus edition. It’s and auto with heated leather, the large screen with sat nav, the newer iDrive system, duel zone climate control, the little led lights under the door handles, Bluetooth audio etc etc I went to view a different E91 320d m sport. It was the same colour (Le Mans blue) with the same body kit etc but it didn’t have iDrive, no heated seats, no climate control, no puddle lights, no Bluetooth audio etc etc and it was only £350 cheaper than the car I bought. And there was literally only 200 or so miles difference on the odometer. And they were both 61 plates. So I obviously paid the little bit extra and bought the higher spec car 🤷♂️
Great podcast, looking forward to the next one. Tyre receipts - just shows Mr Stingy who bought the SE spec car didn’t run it on Linglong Ditchfinders 😂😂
14:36 I fully agree with Edwin I will not sell a car until my vision is finished.. and I also would love to have a giant unit and get back every car I've ever owned
Nice now we have 2 cool podcasts from former CT members i guess CT crashing and burning gave us much more fun content :D Good job boys love it and im with Will on the tint one some places have hot summer not that you lads in the UK know about that :D and tint saves your interior from burning over time and being super hot when you enter the car. Also tint just looks cool on some cars :D
The tint if done correctly can actually cool down your car during the summer, because quality window tint can block UV rays from the sun and also it reflects some sunlight. A car with no window tint absorbs more sunshine and heat than a car with window tints.
I keep tyre receipts 😅 and basically any receipts to prove I’ve spent money on my cars. Ever since my polo gti got set on fire about 15 years ago I’ve kept a pretty detailed history of my cars just in case something happens to it and I have literally nothing to show for it. I can at least show my insurance company that 3 months ago I put a full set of PS4’s on, the discs and pads were changed recently, it had a full detail not so long ago etc. so that I stand a better chance of getting what the car was worth should the worst happen. Because unfortunately when my polo was set on fire all I had to show the insurance was the v5 and the mot certificate to verify the mileage. And they paid me the absolute lowest amount they could for the car. Granted it was still roughly what I’d paid for it but it was just lucky that I’d got a good deal on it 😅
Hi folks, gread pod keep it up, just an idea since we're watching this on YT a few pics would help (especially the part you talked about your ownership history)
Loved ep1. I totally get what Edwin means. I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 in trigger mauve, with red accent recaro interior and I wouldn't sell it if someone offered me many times what it's worth. It took me so long to find this one, and it''s so rare you'd never be able to replace it.
All this episode has really taught me, is that Edwin *would* sell that BMW for 50,000 and then instantly buy it back for 55,000. And the only think I'll say about window tints, rear windows for when you have kids, its a privacy thing, its also good to help block out a bit more sun so you dont end up with with a Trucker Tan.
Having seen the S3 episode, seeing Edwin so positive and unbothered about the whole thing kinda breaks my heart... Hopefully he at least gets to beat Will so that he didn't do all that for nothing
I guess being born and raised in Florida my whole life, window tint is like one of the first things you do to a car here. My own personal car a 2016 chevy suburban i have 5% in the back and 15% on the front 2 windows and a tint strip on the windshield. The heat from driving on road trips on non tinted cars gives me headaches and the tint dramatically reduces the heat it allows in. The tint on my truck is ceramic which helps more. Also being a technician here, i've worked on quite a few trucks and cars that has 5% tint all around and then 20% on the windshield. Driving them into our shop makes it look like night time but man the amount of heat it reduces from coming thru your windows is immense. I do also like the privacy of window tint. But also being in the U.S, theirs a lot of good tint shops that if its done right it wont bubble the tint for a long time. And also i personally think tint dramatically changes the look of a car in a good way.
Car runed everyting. I bought an e46 330 touring (with the SMG gearbox). Didnt even make it home. Back half of the car all the brake lines are rotten and leaking. And I sold my old car (a 98 rover 400 tourer, which never had any issues) so now I dont even have car to drive to work. Love the podcast btw!
If it was a 330 it would have been the SSG which was even worse than the SMG and a totally different box. Thankfully they didn’t sell many, the standard torque converter was much better, just needs regular lubrication of the selector linkage under the car or the change ups get very lazy
Factory tinted glass - YES. It's subtle, and nice on a bright day. Some aftermarket tinted windows, as long as it's a light tint, under some circumstances on some cars, maybe. Works on estate cars, or two seater sports cars with small rear quarter windows. Standard 2 or 4 door cars, NO. Dark/limo tint, in the UK, where you can't tint the front driver's and passenger window - looks bloody awful. It looks half baked, and half arsed. As if someone started the job, got half way through it, couldn't be arsed to finish the job, and went down the pub, never to return and finish the job. Sunroof - YES. Love them. More practical than a convertible. Makes the interior lighter. Tilted gives a nice airflow through the car. Open gives some of the feeling of a convertible.
You can tiny windows for thermal it’s nearly clear but stops the car getting hot. Not relevant to you in England but here in Australia it is a good move.
A point towards your window tint debate... I've always had cars with dark tints (usually factory fit), and my Mrs has always gone fishbowl. Every summer, out came her window covers to protect the little ones from the glare of the sun. They look like old tights, awful. I've never needed them, my windows block out enough light. Shes now tinted her current car, used it for a few summers before and since the tint, made a massive difference just to the heat coming in, and no more tights wrapped around the car!
I had a pretty similar thing with my Evo 8! Bought it super clean. Synchro on 3rd left the chat after 4 months, 2 months waiting for the box to be rebuilt. Then after a year it tried to set on fire, so fixed it and sold it to a guy who came all the way down from Aberdeen (8 hours) who drove it back without tax or insurance... I'm sure it's a cube now because I can't find it anywhere.

Spot on first show. watched it 3 times already. Looking forward to guests coming on and having the argument feature.
But it feels good for a change not getting stressed out about working on it.
who asked
22:12 Clearly the name ’The Forum’ should be changed to ’Who asked??’ 😄
ceramic tint with UV protection is a must in the US where it actually gets hot. The summer sun will destroy you
Come to Australia and you will realize why you would have windows tinted. You have no sun in the UK! Heatwaves of 35°c Ha that's a nice spring day here!
Florida being the same way.
Cars tend to have uv protection on the standard glass anyway. Personally I find every car is boiling hot if you park it in the sun, tinted or not.
@@tadassmolskas3014 That's fair. And in the hot Kansas sun, especially true...
Absolutely loved your unbelievably accurate foreshadowing on the S3 ...
First podcast I’ve actually enjoyed watching. Edwin and Will are really good hosts.
Tell the guys at Autoalex that they need to label their podcasts too on their second channel! Lovely to see you guys do do that.
Love the discussion on Will’s OCD organisation for service history… the history for my E36 is absolutely incredible right up to the old tyre receipts and the hotel receipts from when the original owner stayed in Scotland holidaying after picking the car up from Aberdeen!
from a stunner of a name as TDC (top dead centre) to cream (cars rule everything around me), absolute winners. such great names
20:30 funny story I can relate to,
I live in Australia and I bought a Holden Calais as my first car (Calais is a fancy trim package for the Holden Commodore) and it had the supercharged V6 engine.
This podcast is the CREAM of the crop when it comes to podcasts. Love it!
Absolutely no one's gonna read this comment but these guys are so funny.... The final segment regarding the red & blue of the heating controller is so good...
Oh hell yes!!! Looking forward to this
Great start. Much much better than the other guys podcast. Proper banter. Good topics.
by the way, tint screens are almost mandatory in countries with crazy sun and heat. You need them so that the interior doesnt fry to pieces mate.
"saddam husein might be in there" is fucking class
"I bought another one..." American fan here with legit TDC keychain in hand. I feel your love of cars, and my stories are all about body off VW Beetle resto work in the 90s. Cheers!
Edwin (whose legs barely fit within the wide camera shot): "You don't see a sunroof when you look at a car." Probably true for Mr. Kersten, but dude, you could see a sunroof on a double-decker bus! 😂❤
Listening to this while working on my supercharged E36 saloon which cranks but won’t start. The perfect combination ❤
Great listen gents. Edwin, my e61 with it's factory privacy pack looks spot on with its window tints. Ben - "Will lives less far away than me". Closer then.
Yes! A fellow folder aficionado! Although I do keep receipts for tyres as well… my admin in all other areas of my life is catastrophic but for my cars it is magnificent.
Will arguing just for the sake of it was pretty funny. Good first episode lads
This was a really nice first podcast guys, I had a great time & love the vibe. I'll be tuning in more for this 😊
I can relate to edwin on not letting cars go, ive had people knock my door and offer me nearly double what my project car is worth but ive turned them all away, the worst part is its only an old honda civic😂
finally! been waiting for a top dead centre podcast for ages!
Can definately tell how old someone is by how they learnt what they know.
Used to love the forums and spent MANY hours everyday on them.
Met loads of people through them all over the country and became mates with a few more.
Sadly everything is now on Facebook and that community feeling etc is gone.
I remember seeing that mondeo comment reply and laughed so hard, sorry mondeo owner 😂🙈🙈
my 1st proper car (my actual second car) was also a Brera 3.2 V6 at the age of 20! blooody loved it
Car insurance actually does make sense, it just doesn't work how people expect it to. Corsas are written off a lot, so they are more risk, Aston Martins are usually babied by their ownsers, so are statistically low risk.
Thanks guys. Thanks for saving my life. Had some shit still struggling but currently sat in a&e with plod around me your chilling me the fuck out.
Really enjoyed this podcast, no faffing about, straight to the point on all your topics, great stuff guys
The best podcast name ever
Loving this and thanks for putting out in video
Really enjoyed this, looking forward to more of these.
Oil also helps play a part in cooling the engine.
Isn't that helpful mostly on aircooled engines?
@@Sithhy Correct, more of an impact for air cooled cars but modern cars do have oil coolers; in Australia if you’re towing the first rule is upgrade all the oil coolers, engine and gearbox as factory coolers just don’t cut it.
I’m with Will when it comes to car spec!
I recently bought a new daily. It’s a BMW E91 320d m sport plus edition. It’s and auto with heated leather, the large screen with sat nav, the newer iDrive system, duel zone climate control, the little led lights under the door handles, Bluetooth audio etc etc
I went to view a different E91 320d m sport.
25:04 Will's expression is priceless
Actually love this. Such a good listen
CREAM is such a great name. You could even expand it to CREAMED - Cars Ruin Everything Around Me Each Day. Great podcast!
It's a homage to a wutang song so the joke may not have worked if it was CREAMED 👍🤙
Great podcast, looking forward to the next one.
Tyre receipts - just shows Mr Stingy who bought the SE spec car didn’t run it on Linglong Ditchfinders 😂😂
On Ben's car with a 20 year old BMW I want as little to go wrong as possible. Less options, less to go wrong.
Clean wheels and clear clean glass, always makes a car looks better.
14:36 I fully agree with Edwin I will not sell a car until my vision is finished.. and I also would love to have a giant unit and get back every car I've ever owned
@@BrokenString15 luckily I’ve managed to find room for half of mine one will only go now if I find a better replacement 🤷♂️it’s an affliction 🤫🤣👍
I feel your pain with the spun bearing story, same happened to me with my gt86 2 weeks outside of the dealers warranty. 😅
Not sure what is more mind-blowing?! Will isn't yet 30 or, that you're doing a podcast.
Edwin isn't past his late 20's either
He is the only person I have ever heard that says cars look better without tint.
Plus tint helps cool your car.
The age old battle of autism vs adhd
🤣🤣🤣
I am with Will here. No automatic climate control or cruise control and I don't want the car
Anyone who ever had to get busy in the backseat of their motor because they had no where else will tell you, tints are vital
Like the TDC chanel and this new 2DC. One thing though; include pictures of the cars you're talking about 👍
The tint if done correctly can actually cool down your car during the summer, because quality window tint can block UV rays from the sun and also it reflects some sunlight. A car with no window tint absorbs more sunshine and heat than a car with window tints.
Totally agree with Edwin keeping cars until they’re finished, i resprayed one side of a car because I couldn’t bare selling it in poor condition 😂
Me seeing a podcast "oooh I hope we get more of those hilarious English accents"
I only had to wait 2 and a half minutes, cheers guys! 😂
More podcasts to enjoy ! Thanks guys 👌👌 top lads
@@ChaosPootato it’s probably eating him up inside tho 🤣🤣
I live in the high desert and tints are nice to help keep the sun and heat out in the summer!
Also some tint does look nice
love the little lesson midway through the episode
Chris Harris had a good rant on window tints calling them dogging glass.
When it comes to the tint debate, personally from a person who lives in a desert you got to have tint to reduce the intense heat of your interior.
