I love your videos! The ones with your mom are a special treat!! I admire how the two of you interact and have fun together while working on a task! 💐💐💐
Major confession time! I'm the same age as your mum, with three children ranging from mid-thirties to forty. I also have six grandchildren. I have kept every single piece of artwork, craftwork, stories, school projects and exercise books. They filled four enormous boxes. I've known for years that I should deal with them, and finally did last weekend. I had all my children round and they went through them for me, keeping what they wanted (which was very little), and giving me permission to dispose of the rest. I've kept the most special pieces and, with much sobbing, have got rid of the rest. It's like a bereavement for me, a letting go of precious childhood, but it was unsustainable. I've had to keep telling myself this mantra: If EVERYTHING is special/important, then NOTHING is. I can now honour the pieces I have kept, and can enjoy them. Lesson for parents out there: don't hoard like I did!
@@mariahwilson6505 Oh, thank you, Mariah. I've known since I was young that I have an irrational attachment to sentimental things - stuff that holds memories. It's been a hindrance, and I wish I wasn't like it, but we can't help who we are. I only post this to help others in the same position. I'd probably have carried on storing it all in the loft, but for the fact that I'm getting older and don't want to leave an enormous burden to my children. Best wishes.
That is great you were able to do that! I know how hard it is because as they bring things home it really does feel so important and reminds us of when they were in that certain stage. It's a daily struggle for me right now too =)
Many years ago, I learned that it’s a great idea to have your child hold his/her art and take a picture. This is a great way to keep those treasured art pieces.
I've watched like 5 of your vids tonight while cleaning and decluttering and had noooo clue I was going to do anything other than laundry 😂. Thank you!
Re kid art: I have a kitchen gallery wall, with art my now 16 year old twins made throughout their schooling, hung up in frames I got at thrift stores or on sale at craft stores. I have edited our “wall of fame” as they have grown, but there have been mainstays that have stood the test of time. No folders, no saving for “someday.” My thought is, display it for all to enjoy or throw it out.
I dont even know who you are but I credit you and your mom for motivating me to finally declutter my closet and get projects done around the house. Thank you so much! 😊
This seems so silly now but I had been really frustrated for a couple of years at how dusty my closet was and wondering why it was so dusty all the time. I was annoyed that I didn't grab and wear items because they were just so dusty until I realized that I was thinking backward and that the items were dusty because I wasn't wearing them. That made it super easy to declutter them, clean the closet thoroughly, and only put back the very small amount of clothes that I was actually wearing. Love your videos! Thanks!
This compilation was a lot of work to piece together I bet, but I am confident it will encourage so many!! All of these tips are worth writing down to remember to accomplish each habit, one by one. Once you employ all of these ideas, you will not regret it. Your home will be so peaceful! I was the SAME regarding the papers. I'm ((still)) finding little notes or papers, one by one to toss. Ty for the tax reminder; I'd saved back taxes from the year 2000😅😮😂 and several yrs ago, I had finally let go of a huge binder of canceled checks! It has taken me yrs to build my decluttering muscles but it has BEEN SO worth it. 10 items that have left our house in the last week: Exfoliating gloves ( one of those free gifts...) Hi Julia, I love to hear what is leaving your home! It's very encouraging for everyone. I was the same with saving paper for way too long. I had every scrape of paper from 10 or so years and it felt great to clean all of that out. I hope you are having a good week.
I love color and bright patterns, but, I don't think your home looks dull or bland at all...To me, it looks bright and airy and peaceful and neat. (And how I'd like mine to look!)
I love the mint colored tile and kitchen walls. I am now retired and 70 years old, so I have a LOT of saved things! Slowly going through things I don’t want or need anymore. i.e. “Teacher clothes,” educational teaching books (teachers are now using internet, etc, and really don’t want my 10 year old grad school texts, no matter how useful), etc, clothes that don’t fit or I don’t wear. I am sure I have over 1000 books In bookcases all throughout my house. I am donating art, crafts, design and reference books to charity. I have already given children’s and young adult books to other classrooms. I put fiction and other RECENT books of interest in the neighborhood LITTLE LIBRARY that we readers all use. Younger relatives coming in 15 days, so I am putting things they might want in one place. What they don’t want can be donated, sold or given to someone else. P.S. They mostly DON’T want photo albums. We have enjoyed going through them together and they can take pictures on phone, etc, or take the photos they want. I can do the same and discard the rest. Note from former art and reading teacher: magazines, newspapers are always welcome in school art classes nearby. Some of the photos I mentioned are also useful for language arts and visual arts classes. I love your “happiness” goal. I think I should be more mindful and grateful. 👍❤️👩🏻🎨📖📚
Good morning Shannon! We are in the process of selling our 2br condo and buying a single family home. Enjoy all your good tips! The “drop zone” table your husband made is simply beautiful! What a work of art. He is very talented. The one piece of furniture I brought with me when I moved from IN to SC is an inlaid wooden table that was my grandparents. It always Sat it their hallway outside their one bathroom and it is a beautiful work of art as well. So proud to have this memory of them. Hello from the east coast/SC!!!💕😊🏝️
Yes thank you Shannon. So many useful tips and also reminders of what's worked for me previously. Definitely a video that can be returned to over and over, thanks
I live your videos. 🙂Today I have no energy, but you still rise my mood and I even feel like I have accomplished something by watching 😂. I think it's very fun to take a photo of the kid, holding the art they are very prowd of at the moment. I have done that with my sisterś two kids when we created something. The photo of them showing it, is so much more fun than only the item they created. You see they are so prowd and happy about it. I also took pictures of some artwork I threw away, both things I have done and my son who now is 31. It's handy and some smelled after being in the attic, so that felt like a good choice. Then I share the digital photos with him, because he does not want any of the real work. 🙂 Nice video as always Shannon! ❤ Also thank your mother from me because she often participate in your videos. You two are so fun to see together. You are so very nice to her, and not blaming her for what she wants to save. That's a real skill. And I love watching that, and the two of you joking and doing so much progress at the samt time. ❤
These are some great tips! Paper clutter is definitely something so many struggle with. I've learned to question everything in my home. I'm even decluttering a decor piece I love because it was an impulse purchase and I didn't have a good spot to hang it. Whoops 😂
Great video Shannon. Dealing with incoming paper right away is so helpful. Junk mail goes straight to recycle. And any paper I need to deal with goes into a special basket. Every Tuesday, I pull out the basket and deal with the paper, shredding when I am finished. Only super important papers get saved in a small portable file box, car titles, birth certificates, passports etc. These have all helped me tame the paper monster
So agree on the art projects but let me add to be sure it is your child’s art work. Years later, like 20 years after my kids graduated I learned that some pottery that I had been hanging on to was actually from a class mate that we didn’t even have a personal relationship with even during the school years. Both my kids told me the students were throwing away their after work at school and they brought it home just because they liked it! I never knew but had I looked at the initials on the bottom I would have discovered right away! It came out one day when my daughter asked “mom why are you saving…😂
My number one rule: If I touch it-I deal with it. Period. It works- my home is always clean- (eat-do cleanup), (mail-pay, shred, respond), (laundry-wash, dry, fold, put away), etc.
The harder is to realise that you are not any more teen & as mum life Get different & clothes & style. Good you talk about that change & go through fear of change & letting go of "youth" things which you don't use any more ❤
Great summary 😊. I love to declutter, clean and organize alone.. eg on weekends my kids go to their father. I tend to do it on rainy weekends. I make it cosy. I do it with favourite films, series or you tube channels (like yours) running in the background with cosy foods and drinks for my breakfast, lunch, dinner breaks. I'm doing my first this weekend (raining)... starting with paperwork and kids memorabilia filing etc. Now Autumn/Winter is here I will be doing more. In summer I do less.. if the weather is good I go out swimming and walking and doing stuff I love. Paper is still my biggest problem. And digital (still not started on at all, although I have been decluttering for 7yrs). We have to keep over 10yrs taxes.. each country is different concerning laws for paperwork eg taxes. Luckily I kept everything (in files, in dry boxes in the attic) which i needed for my divorce eg stuff from 40yrs ago living in the UK where I grew up!..so what you need to keep also depends on your lifestyle eg sessile, travelling, living abroad etc.. but you can keep it organized and out of daily life eg in the attic. Ps. Love that you don't have a coffee table in the middle of the room.. we don't either.. we like the open space to. My kids like lying on the floor, we play board games there and I do paperwork and crafting on the floor. We have one next to the sofa which only comes infront of the sofa in Advent/Christmas when we have treats and the Advent Kranz.
Great tips. For important things like birth certificates, marriage certificate, deed for the house, car title, passports, social security cards. You really ought to get a fireproof safe or fireproof deposit box to protect them. Even though these items are replaceable if they are destroyed in a fire. It is a huge inconvenience and takes a long time to go through the process to get them replaced, causing more stress during what would be a difficult time.
Shannon, I love, love, love your channel. Your organizational tendencies are very similar to my own. Also love the times that you and your mom are together. BUT, PLEASE remove the store labels on your bins. There is nothing worse for visual clutter than labels, even if you turn them to the back of a cupboard. I truly love the way you declutter❣️
Shannon, Great video. Oh the many hairstyles...I love the way you are currently wearing your hair. We started decluttering in our kitchen. We've gone through it twice now & have gotten rid of over 300 items. I am ready to go through it again, but next is my sewing / craft room. Yikes. 😊
Shannon!! I don't know if your mom was hanging blankets up but it inspired me to hang my extra sheet set. Currently it lives in a vintage picnic basket but I have plenty of room in my closet. I saved almost all my daughter's art and guess what? She didn't want any of it 😮 I kept a few things for myself and got rid of at least 5 boxes of kiddo paperwork. Thanks for all the inspiration 💜
Hello, I hope you are having a good day. I think my mom was hanging tablecloths. But either way that is a great idea if you don't have room on a shelf. =)
I just started doing the 10 minute a day declutter and I have a list….but not putting pressure on myself cause then I just give up ….some days I can do 3/5 decluttering project some day I do nothing 😂…..great advice 😊❤️
I filled four laundry baskets with papers, and placed them in my carport sitting area near the recycling bin. I am going to go through them over the next few days, only bringing back into the house what I absolutely must keep. I’m guessing there will be little to nothing I’m going to need/want to cart back in.
Paperless bills is not an option for some people. I’ve had chemo and my mind is not quite as sharp now. If I don’t see the bill, I won’t pay it. Also, I won’t subscribe to automatic payments. I need to see what I’m paying, if the price has changed and need to keep up with the money in my account.
I absolutely love your channel and tips! This was great. I love your kitchen, too. I remember you said the plan is to remodel, but I just love the colors and vintage tiles and cabinets. Thank you for creating such inspiring content! ~ Belinda
These are the videos that help us and remind us it’s a process of learning and developing the skill overtime ! The table your husband made shows how talented he is and it is absolutely gorgeous ! One thing I kept that shocked me my children didn’t want to see and were absolute on me getting rid of was their report cards they are thrown out now !Truly watching you and your mom declutter has helped me ! My daughter and I have started she’s almost 19 I’m using her now as she good at telling me the truth and I’m using her before she moves out lol !I also used the hand towel idea in that basket and wow what a difference! Thanks to you and you mom 👋🏻🇨🇦
Love this gal and her work. However. Beware of not having paper statements from your bank. Many many folks are on social media explaining certain banks are claiming they have no account and without paper statements you can’t prove your case. Hold on to your bank paper statements for at least three months worth.
This video is so motivating!!! So many great ideas ❤ Thank you for all the time you put into putting this together. I will watch this over again a few times!
You're videos are great and I heard you mention the echo in your house. I still would suggest you to buy a mini microphone to get the echo out from your videos, you can find cheap ones online.
Love this! I have paper in every room, then shove them in boxes, take notes from webinars which I mostly forget but definitely want to remember the tips in this video! What do you do with any deceased relatives or friend’s memories?
I do use coupons, but only on the store apps that I shop at. My grocery store has so many coupons for things like milk and butter and items I actually buy and use on a regular basis. I then do curbside pickup as I pickup on the way home…it’s only a half block off my route home and I shop on Fridays as you get 4x fuel points that day. I budget shop and only but what I need and only when I need it. My budget for the next three weeks for groceries is less than thirty but I am shopping for items to go with items I have that make affordable meals. I am on a strict budget because I’d student loans. By doing all of this my kitchen inventory is small and no food goes to waste and I have only the kitchen items I us on a regular basis or it’s gone. I rarely get mail except on advertisements day so most goes into the trash cans right next to the mailboxes.
I would suggest getting a fire proof metal box for important documents. Passports, marriage license, birth certificates, home owner documents, etc. Things that are needed in hard copies.
My situation is, I am a minimalist at heart, however I married a hoarder. If I get rid of one thing, he brings into our home, 2-4 things. I've made attempts to explain to him that I feel like I'm living in a cave. There's no air. I can't think or breath. He has tried many times to clear his stuff, but he ends up bringing it back in plus more. I have tried to get organizing merch. It doesn't work. I feel like a nag if I question him as he's bringing stuff in, where he's going to put it. It's almost like his stuff is a security blanket. Deep breaths do help, but it isn't a cure. I appreciate your video. Thank you for sharing. If anyone has any idea how to maneuver through this situation, I'm open to suggestions. Divorce and kicking him out is not an option.
How about, every time he brings in something new, he has to sit and watch a decluttering/hoarding video? Just a thought. My husband was so impressed with how much room I was starting to have by decluttering, that's what made him start. If you have any room or space that is only yours, you could set an example.
Very helpful thank you ❤ I too deal with the mail as soon as possible & get my bills by email. I get very little mail now after unsubscribing too. Have a lovely day ❤
Thank you! I don't intermittent fast, I actually tried that for about a week and realized its not for me lol. I have been cutting out the snacks and trying to get more movement into my day =)
I live in NorCal and I know you are in socal. I now leave my slippers under my bed- even when I go to bed at night because it is my foot protection should we have a quake and there is broken glass. I just started doing this as having shoes "next to" your bed was advised as earthquake preparation.
What do you do if your husband insists on using the kitchen table as his desk? We have been married almost 50 years and he just has to spread out his papers, and keep them there forever. I have tried giving him various places to keep them, or have suggested a desk for hm, but he just has to walk to the table, sit at the table, put his coat over a chair, and there it all stays. I HATE it!
I would make a space in a room for myself with a small table and one chair. I would put a pretty tablecloth on it and always have a small vase with a fresh flower. I would put a place setting for one and eat my meals there. I would never clean the kitchen table and only go in there to prepare my own meals. That's just me!
@@kathyol Great idea, except that my living room and kitchen are separated by a half wall. Everyone who comes into my living room can see his mess. If it were not for that, I would do that. That is great idea, tho.
@l A few months ago, my husband's uncle died and we had to empty out his house. He had an old roll top desk. My husband brought it home and is going to clean it up and repair it. We are putting it in a little room near our living room. I am hoping he will start to keep his junk on the desk now. My fingers are crossed.
Spectacular Video. Mein Gott, do I ever need help. In January I am moving to a retirement community. I'm going from a 4 Bedroom home to a 2 bedroom flat that is less than 1/2 of the square footage, and no yard. Everybody tells me to sell things, but I feel like just throwing half of my expensive stuff away. - I don't want to waste my time donating, or selling. It will be easier to rent a dumpster. - B-T-W, your home looks like a B&B I used to own and rent out. The look is called "Staging." -
There's are some organizations that collect for veterans that will come and pick up donations. No need to even carry to dumpster. But I know what you mean, sometimes you just want stuff out.
I’ll tell you what really bugs me. When you have a top, dress or romper that has straps - like really thin or criss cross back … and it’s not lined!!!! Especially when it’s a oatmeal, beige, light colour. Can’t wear a bra under cuz it looks dumb. Can’t wear nothing which would be my choice) because I’m too old for nipples showing through the tops. 😞😭😩
Nice! That’s doesn’t work in the USA. Here, if a company has paid for their junk to be delivered, the Postal Service is legally obligated to deliver it.
In your filing of all important papers and previous year income tax forms-- why don't you put them in fire proof safes. If they are that important I think the should be. Just saying. Have a Blees year.

Absolutely!
And also put some rice/moisture absorber and check every 3 months or so because otherwise the documents may get mouldy in the box.
@@Lena-jq7cr Good suggestion.
I love your vintage kitchen!
That colour of top looks great on you. I will admit I miss your mom when she is not with you 😊. Great ideas for decluttering.
Oh thank you! She will be in upcoming videos =)
My decluttering muscle is so strong. I would declutter 95% of my household items if my family agreed.😂
Haha! I am the same way.
Me too!
Thank you for sharing. I was inspired by your video, while I watched it. I looked at what was around me and what can I declutter, paper, mail, etc,
Shannon, Great video. Oh the many hairstyles...I love the way you are currently wearing your hair. We started decluttering in our kitchen. We've gone through it twice now & have gotten rid of over 300 items. I am ready to go through it again, but next is my sewing / craft room. Yikes. 😊
Haha with my hair! I have always very radically different hairstyles lol.
I do this for a living and I agree with your methods 100%. Big thumbs up, thanks for sharing with the world!🎉
I’m pausing this video after each tip so I can go & declutter papers & set up files & baskets. Thanks Shannon!
🥰🇨🇦an hour of Shannon motivation!!! Thank you!! Got me moving and doing another pass of the house.
Wonderful!
What an excellent compilation of your many tips and trick!! Thank you!!
I'm totally saving this video to play whenever I declutter as motivation!
Love these videos they make the process so much more fun. Thanks for the motivation.
Great, comprehensive video! So helpful, encouraging and thorough.
I filled four laundry baskets with papers, and placed them in my carport sitting area near the recycling bin. I am going to go through them over the next few days, only bringing back into the house what I absolutely must keep. I’m guessing there will be little to nothing I’m going to need/want to cart back in.
I appreciate this video and all the work it must have been to put it together.
~ Belinda
Oh thank you!
Same ❤
You are a very thoughtful declutter person😺
Thanks Shannon for all these great tips and ideas. I always get new perspectives when I watch your videos. Thanks so much.
I'm so glad!
Egads! One of the very best decluttering videos I've watched!
Great decluttering tips! Thank you.❤
Thanks for watching!
This video is so motivating!!! So many great ideas ❤ Thank you for all the time you put into putting this together. I will watch this over again a few times!
I'm so glad!
You are such an inspiration. Your videos have helped me tremendously ❤
Wow, thank you!
Great video Shannon.
Great video n tips. Loved it. Thank you.
Your hair looks great.
Great tips Shannon!
Beautiful table your husband made. I think you and your Mon are kick a** fun. Love you shows.
Wonderful video!!!!
Decluttering 10 minutes a day? I can do that!😊
All my files and bills are in a storage ottoman in our den. Got rid of the file cabinet long ago.
so great
Great video!💙 So many tips!
Thanks so much!!
I am in a wheelchair so a coffee table is a big no for me too. It makes it so much easier to get around.
You're videos are great and I heard you mention the echo in your house. I still would suggest you to buy a mini microphone to get the echo out from your videos, you can find cheap ones online.
I actually use an external mic on my camera and it doesn't change much. A lot of the time I use voice over now and it sounds a lot better.
Love this! I have paper in every room, then shove them in boxes, take notes from webinars which I mostly forget but definitely want to remember the tips in this video! What do you do with any deceased relatives or friend’s memories?
I like that you have a separate area to display kids' art rather than the usual mass of papers on the fridge. I hate how visually cluttered that is.
Your mom!
Owning winter socks in SoCal! 😅

Remember to check all pockets when getting rid of clothes
I love your little black backpack. Where is it from?
Very helpful thank you ❤ I too deal with the mail as soon as possible & get my bills by email. I get very little mail now after unsubscribing too. Have a lovely day ❤
Random question. Do you intermittent fast? You're looking great!
Thank you! I don't intermittent fast, I actually tried that for about a week and realized its not for me lol. I have been cutting out the snacks and trying to get more movement into my day =)
You kept saying TWO boys. I had to look at the load date to be sure I wasn’t watching an older video. LOL!
Yes it was a compilation of all my decluttering tips from the last 5 years. Back then I only had 2 boys =) Now 3 ❤
You should keep the most important documents into a fireproof safe. You never know!
I agree although all these documents can be replaced =)
@@petmomful2260 It sounds like there's hope for your kitchen table. I would help with the clean up of the roll top desk. Good Luck!!
@@kathyol Thanks!
Also coffee tables attract toddlers to knock their heads on.
Mail does not even cone into our house. I get the mail, open it on the way to the house. Junk mail goes into the trash before I get in the house.
Hi, your videos really do inspire me. Where do you live?
Do you have a fire safe/bag for the very important documents?
I don't have one, but probably should =0
She would need therapy after coming to my house 😅
😊❤
Spectacular Video. Mein Gott, do I ever need help. In January I am moving to a retirement community. I'm going from a 4 Bedroom home to a 2 bedroom flat that is less than 1/2 of the square footage, and no yard. Everybody tells me to sell things, but I feel like just throwing half of my expensive stuff away.
-
I don't want to waste my time donating, or selling. It will be easier to rent a dumpster.
-
B-T-W, your home looks like a B&B I used to own and rent out. The look is called "Staging."
-
There's are some organizations that collect for veterans that will come and pick up donations. No need to even carry to dumpster. But I know what you mean, sometimes you just want stuff out.
I tried the Veteran's thing years ago. After you give, they call you twice a month, and bug the hell out of you. Forget them. @@soak785
Citizens DO need their heritage, medical, insurance, finance in hard copies.
Try proving anything after an EMP...
❤
I’ll tell you what really bugs me. When you have a top, dress or romper that has straps - like really thin or criss cross back … and it’s not lined!!!! Especially when it’s a oatmeal, beige, light colour. Can’t wear a bra under cuz it looks dumb. Can’t wear nothing which would be my choice) because I’m too old for nipples showing through the tops. 😞😭😩
We don’t get junk mail I have a sticker on letter box saying “NO JUNK MAIL “ solved 👌 hardware store
Nice! That’s doesn’t work in the USA. Here, if a company has paid for their junk to be delivered, the Postal Service is legally obligated to deliver it.
Please leave your vintage tiles, people pay lots of money to make it beautiful like that🎉
In your filing of all important papers and previous year income tax forms-- why don't you put them in fire proof safes. If they are that important I think the should be. Just saying. Have a Blees year.
Yeah, if my home burns down all those papers can be found again. I do have everything digital too, but I like to keep the hard copy as a back up.
I'm not a fan of open shelving. Even baskets and containers look like clutter. Give me cupboard doors!
