Earthquakes in Astoria NY, Japan: 1.7 magnitude quake strikes in Queens, death toll rises in Japan

  • Japan earthquakes left at least 55 people dead and left behind a scene of damaged buildings, cars and boats. Aftershocks continued in Ishikawa after a magnitude of 7.6 struck the area.
    In other news, the U.S. Geological Survey said a small earthquake struck New York City as a 1.7 magnitude. Police received reports of an explosion in Roosevelt Island.

    Somebody in the tower is fired! So sorry for the loss to the Coast Guard and families. Prayers for Japan 🙏

      The Coast Guard plane was supposed to be holding short of the runway. They stuck out into the runway in the path of the JAL jet.. The tower did exactly as they were supposed to.

    As a former flight attendant this is both amazing and wonderful to hear in terms of a successful landing and evacuation but also a worst nightmare scenario in terms of it happening at all

      Japanese people can actually walk down the aisle of a airplane without turning sideways like most over - eating Americans. Americans would just clog the aisle like a toilet gets clogged. 😂😂😂😂

      @@TuckerSP2011 If the Japanese had been so disciplined, the Fukushima nuclear power plant would not be what it is today. If the Japanese are so disciplined, Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba, Kobayashi Chemical, Kobe Steel, Toyota, and so on should not lie about their product data or their finances. Then the Japanese wouldn't hold press conferences every day and bow in apology.🙂

    “A series of booms” does not sound like a 1.7 quake. An earthquake of that size is way too small to be felt. I don’t think we are getting the truth here.

    How could you sensationalize a 1.7 magnitude tremor in NY in the same story as to what happened in Japan. Very sad choice
    The trucks, busses and cars traveling through the city most likely creates close to a 1.7 magnitude tremor every day

      I recall the report repeatedly stating a "small" earthquake...Not sure whose sensationalizing it? The FD response was due to an unknown report of "a building shaking". Sorry if NYers are a little sensitive to falling buildings....asshole.

      Fun fact: Since the 1700s, New York has experienced over 550 earthquakes. The worst was a 5.9 on Sept. 5, 1944. Major damage was reported in the town of Massena. People as far as eastern Maine, central Michigan and even Maryland felt the quake.

    I've been through the San Fernando quake 1971 (6.5), SF 1989 (6.9), Northridge 1994 (6.7), Montana 2017 (5.8) & multiple tremors. 1.7 is maybe setting off a car alarm.

      Went thru 1971 earthquake was living in Redondo Beach bed shook walls shook but no damage that far south 😮

      ‘89 was a 7.1. I was a couple miles from the epicenter in the Santa Cruz mountains. The number difference from 7.1 to the 7.5 ( I think) for Japan seems small. The difference in the quake is huge. And how long did it shake. Our 15 seconds was Plenny enuff.

    Taking nothing with you when evacuating an aircraft is standard procedure. The flight attendants will repeat this instruction as everyone evacuates.

    Are very calm and disipline they follow rules and they dont panic… if that happen here in the philippines. cant imagine how pinoy reacts . We easily get panic and screams. Specially me .cant . imagine maybe i faint or pass out when i see that fire outside the plane. Still sad some coast guard didnt survive. 😢. But im happy. All passengers are safe. I hope it wont happen again…’

    The Japanese people have had to deal with earthquakes for far longer than the American people. It's no wonder they reacted the way they did.
    A 1.7 magnitude earthquake isn't very bad though. The East Coast isn't very unstable I would've expected a stronger quake to hit the Midwest, in Texas.

    You cant feel a 1.7 tremor at all. You may sometimes feel a 3.5 depending on where you are.
