You forget a very important reason for the Spanish acceptance of migration. A very important group of migrants is constituted by Latin Anerican: same language, same religion and similar culture. Another important group are Romanian who also speak a Latin language and are able to learn Spanish in 3-4 months. Besides, they are EU citizens. These two nationalities form the majority of inmigrants and they integrate quite easily.
There was quite a backlash against romanians in the early 2010s too. People love to gloss over this. They were simmilarly accused of bringing trouble, upping the crime rates and destroying welfare by working illegally and for lower wages.
Spaniard here. Most of the country approves latin-american immigration, but reject north-african immigration. If Sánchez had said that he was going to grant citizenship to 300,000 Venezuelans, nobody would have complained.
Makes sense. We in the US don't mind how many Europeans come here, because our cultural roots are European. (Native Americans aside.) But when millions of non-English speaking people flow into border regions, it creates a lot of discord. Legal immigration can be set at reasonable levels for assimilation, but illegals can overwhelm a community.
it's funny how different things are felt depending where you are: if you told me Spain is going to grant citizenship to 300,000 Venezuelans that fled their country towards other South American nations (like mine, Chile), we would be happy, lol, because we have received way too many, more than what we can assimilate. Sometimes it's not just cultural differences that create an anti-migrant view, but the sheer number. And I would argue that there are cultural differences even between Hispanic nations; believe me that crime behaves very different depending from which country it comes from.
They are migration friendly because most of their migrants were hispanics from Latin America, so same language and very similar cultures. A lot of them were literal spanish refugees and their descendants that had fled to Latin America during the Spanish civil war.
@@Hasanaljadid Its ironic, it seems like the further a migrant travels the better type of person he is on avarage. Muslim immigrants in the US dont seem to cause any trouble, however some latinos do. I have been subscribed to this chanell for some time now (I´m Spanish from Galicia) and I would like to say this video is not a good explanation on "Why" the U-Turning is happening, and actually is missleading since it leaves out major factors, namely: 1. Most of Inmigrants in Spain are coming from Central and South America and from the rest of Europe. (INE Data) 2. The origin of the "classical" american (the continent) inmigration makes integration easy due to speaking the same language and share many common culture aspects. Many of these people are actually the sons or gradsons of Spanish people who emigrated to America (the continent) decades ago. Also worth noting that under Spanish law, people coming from south american countries and other places formerly within the Spanish Empire (eg. Philippines), have an special and faster system for residency. 3. The U-Turning is happening because the rise on illegal inmigration coming from Africa. (Vox focus on this aspect, actually calling americans "our latin american brothers". So you can see where the issue lays for them. When people see the news on problems with inmigration they do not tend to think on Venezuelans, Argentinians, etc but in inmigration coming from the Magreb and Sahel regions. With all due respect, not mentioning this in the video talks about poor research, and is not providing the whole picture in an accurate way. I hope this post helps to anyone curious about this topic. English is not my mother tongue, so forget any mistakes on the writting. Best,

I guess you've started noticing it as well. Start watching more carefully. I always say this about these kinds of UA-cam channels - if I know they are being disingenuous on topics I am familiar about, how do I know they're telling me the truth on topics I am not familiar with.

I've lived in Spain and am from Australia (of Spanish and Peruvian parents). The reason why Spain is migrant friendly is because the migrants (the largest proportion being from Latin America) generally integrate really well due to a cultural interchange that has occurred over centuries. Firstly I do understand latino's are different however after travelling across latin america these countries are quite similar with similar tastes and some regional variances. Latino's speak Spanish, Spanish people listen to music from Latin America and vice versa, and Latinos and Spaniards share love of family and friends and going out. I realised what a cohesive factor this shared cultural memory is between Latinos and Spaniards when I came back to Australia and saw how differently Australians and immigrants (and immigrants themselves) interact due to the many different countries and cultures Australia pulls from. immigrants in Australia really have very little to do with each other (at least the 1st generation, the kids however will have friends from different cultural backgrounds). For example my Spanish father and Peruvian mother's friends were generally either Spanish or Latinos (again, shared cultural memory), very few of any other culture. However, my sister and I have friends that cross all cultural backgrounds (from Europe, UK, latin america, the Middle East, SE Asia, etc etc).
Yes that's what I assumed it was. I'd guess that most African migrants arrive illegally. So this is just about legalising them. How many will return when their visas are up remains to be seen 😉
They want EU people to think those are North African like in the rest of the EU, and Its not. Most migrants here are Romanian and Latín American, thats why Its friendly, most people strongly desagrees with North African migration (even me, and I'm dating a Moroccan girl).@@Lyraorganum
I'm just glad I read the comments to learn about that. I was so confused as to why their muslim migrants are not causing any trouble, but apparently they are - like everywhere else.
Also they judge other nations by the standards of their liberal middle-class, which is just bonkers considering most of the migrants aren't these urbanized and americanized people.
You are missing out on a crucial reason why Spaniards are more friendly to immigration: a huge percentage of immigrants are South American and as such integrate very easily in Spain, causing less social friction than more culturally different migrants.
Spain mainly receives immigrants from three regions of the world: 1. Europe 2. Latin America 3. North Africa. Europe and Latin America are very well integrated into Spanish society, however, there are greater frictions with North Africa. Immigrants from Asia are very small in number so they do not have a great impact. What is increasing is immigration from Sub-Saharan Africa, although it is still small compared to the first three.

Anti illegal-immigration is just common sense. I mean, why would you want to welcome stranges from some unknown places int your homes, feed, care for and give them benefits, especially if many of them provide little to no value for your society, do crimes, and some even hate your country.
In Spain we have 3 types of inmigrants: 1. Europeans, welcomed. 2. Hispanics from America; most welcomed as we perceive them already as kin. 3. North africans, not welcomed. There are a couple reasons additionally to the migration-friendly attitude in Spain: - The historical migration used to be from Latin American countries, which made those people relatively easier to absorb due to the historical ties due to former colonisation. - Also, because of the Franco Regime and post-Civil War retaliations against left-leaning citizens, many of those ended up migrating to Latin America. And in the early Democracy steps (80's), many others went to Europe to find a job. Both reasons make it to understand people's need of migrating. If anything, the Latin American origin being displaced by African people is what is making people that were less accepting of immigration start airing their grievances and rejection.

I don't understand why english speakers call Sanchez "prime minister". Every single person in spain calls him the "president". His oficial title is "presidente del gobierno de España", translated it would be "president of the spanish government". Just something that I've noticed.
If I had to guess, saying "president" in English could be confusing since Spain is ultimately not a presidential republic but rather a monarchy. The Wikipedia page for "Prime Minister of Spain" contains a better explanation.
porque en el sistema ingles al presidente del gobierno se le llama primer ministro mientras que el presidente lo es de la nacion como en EEUU por ejemplo
Because the word "President" is connected with heads of states, whereas "Prime minister" means head of government. Calling him a PM gives more accurate description of his role.
Por el sistema político que tenemos, un presidente se vota directamente en las urnas, a un primer ministro se le vota en el parlamento por los diputados.
I'm glad to find from the comments that Spain is friendly to Latin American migrants. Spain is in a very advantageous position compared to other EU countries for the reasons already mentioned here plus most people from LATAM are very hard working and just want a chance in life.

And of course this isn't the only issue that leftist authoritarians(yes they do exist lol) have turned into a black and white, take no prisoners issue. Even environmentism, a place where farmers and city people can agree on (farmers don't like erosion and having their water poisoned by bad practices from the megacorp upstream) the other differences for some reason make it impossible for these leftists to compromise and be humble.
When europe left adopts an anti-migration stand then the far right parties will be diluted (like what happened in denmark). Then Europe will be saved from populists.
Yeah, there is nothing far-right about anti-immigration at all. Just look to Denmark, where the social-democrats adopted harsh anti-illegal-immigration measures, and basically vaporized the entire "far right". In Sweden, the opposite strategy was used. They ignored, nazi-painted and shunned their "far right" until it grow so big and their problems so large, that they will now need decades to sort their shit out, while the "far right" party is second biggest party in the country.
Focusing on immigration in general is obtuse. There are different kind of immigrants, whose impact in the societies they move to is widely different. Be it right or wrong, most Spaniards (but the same goes for other Europeans) are generally fine with migrants whose background indicate a strong propensity to integration within their way of life - that is, other Europeans, Southern Americans, other westerners. They are way less welcoming when it comes to Africans and, especially, Muslims. The greatest influx of migrants to Spain were from Latin America, hence the general positive vibe towards it.
Yes, you are pointing at a very important distinction there. I'm Norwegian, and Norway has like Sweden had a massive population increase over the last decades due to immigration. Being a Spaniard is having the best country in the world and yet the worst political class. The whole migration thing is been conducted based on capital interest and not people's interest. Plus, it is not moral to import poor people to exploit them here for cheap labor. This modern form of colonialism is racist.
You misunderstand capitalism and the welfare state. The government does not import poor migrants, they come willingly and the governnent allows many to stay. They look for a job, and they find the jobs the business owners want to give them. If anything, the government probably offers these migrants too much aid. As for welfare state, you must know that your future pensions and government spenditure in health, education and everything else depend on a steady population working and paying taxes, but the spanish birth rate is barely 1.2, not enough to keep the population steady. What will do the trick? Allowing migrants to cone in. Orban's Hungary nativist policies clearly show that incentives to young families don't really work (not well enough), and the truth of the matter is that modern capitalist society does not encourage people to have children, and until the robots do all the hard work, we need to find ways to keep our population stable.
It was even proven by japanese economists that migration isn't even benefitial in capital sense. It's just making situation worse and thing that makes things worse is... welfare state. It's a ponzi scheme and new migrants just bring new recipiants now and in future.
I think we would need much less immigration if the jobs in sectors like agriculture were filled by Spaniards. Yet we don't want to work there on average. Please stop acting as though having a problem with a culture that has a completely different set of values / way of life is the same as being racist.
I live in Spain and the migrants from Latin America integrate very well into Spanish society, especially Argentinians. On the other hand migrants from Morocco and Algeria do not integrate into Spanish society well.
As a lot of people commented, its a HUGE mistake to not mention that large numbers of people who migrated to Spain, come from hispanic countries, same language, close culture and above all of this, CATHOLICS.
Not surprising a lot of this sentiment comes from Catalonia... For years Catalan pro-independence parties refused to take migrants from Latin American countries in favour of African and Asian ones with the idea of having them speak only Catalan instead of the Spanish Latin Americans would have brought with them… how the turntables or something.
Yh lol, they complained that latin americans did not want to learn catalan, and only wanted to speak spanish. Know they are paying the consequences of chosing another type of immigration.
It is also happening in countries like Uruguay, Paraguay, Costa Rica and Colombia with immigration. The same thing happened in the United States and their people do not care about the problems of Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela and Latin American countries, both Democrats and Republicans do not care about having immigration reform and the problem is that immigration is such a big problem for the United States that Americans unfortunately support a mass deportation of immigrants from all over the world including black, Asian, indigenous, white and Hispanic Americans. They support that policy, unfortunately we do not have money to support immigrants coming to the country we cannot even take care of Americans living in poverty, inequality, crime, racism, problems with the criminal justice system and the health system. The same thing happens with American territories seen as second class citizens. And also it is not only Haitians and Central Americans but also Cubans and Venezuelans who have a political, social and economic crisis that is happening there in those countries. But do not emigrate to Chile or the United States, Brazil, Canada, Peru and Mexico, those countries have many problems migrating to countries like Uruguay, Paraguay, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, Suriname, Costa Rica and Panama. There is now a program so that migrants, when they show up at the border between the United States and Mexico, can apply or can be taken to go to Spain, Italy and Canada between those governments. In the future, if Cuba, Bolivia, Honduras, Peru, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela fall into chaos, unrest, civil war or collapse, many refugees will migrate to Jamaica and other countries in the Caribbean and Latin America and the migration crisis will be worse than the other waves of Cubans in the region. And, the entire world. Immigration is always being used as a weapon. And Bolivians, Hondurans, Cubans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Haitians and Peruvians will also have to migrate to places like the Dominican Republic, Belize and other places in Latin America and the Caribbean or European countries if the United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Brazil close their doors to immigration from the region in the future.
The biggest reason why Spaniards are proimmigrant: Most non Europeans are from Latin America. In Spain the three main types of immigrants are: 1. Europeans, 2. Latin Americans, 3. North Africans. Anyone who knows about Spanish and Latin American culture knows that they are highly compatible. Of course there are some problems, but nothing comparable with immigrants from North Africa.
Spain's youth unemployment rate is ~25%. So, opening your country to huge numbers of migrants (which will need jobs once they've immigrated) is probably not going to be high on the list of their citizens.
Swiss style migration is the best solution. Regulated migration based on the needs of a country, with a commitment of x years prior granting nationality. It isn't difficult to put together, I don't understand why they make it so bloody difficult.
It is cultural. Historically we always were more inclusive compared to other western countries but soon there will be a turning point like in the rest of Europe. It is a matter of time.
As a young person from the Canary Islands, I do not mind when they come here and contribute to the economy and accept our culture and ideals, our issue is the increase in crime rates while casually the rates in the countries those migrants come from decreases. Spaniard here, most migrants tend to integrate in Spanish society but there is a particular group that does not want to learn Spanish, does not want to integrate and does not want to have anything in common with Spain. They even are so entitled that they do not consider themselves as inmigrant; even though they're the 4th largest inmigrant population in the country. Of course I'm talking about British. The 4th largest inmigrant community in Spain and largely the one that does the least to integrate in the country.
This is one of the worst analysis I have ever seen.. There are different kinds of migrants. The majority of migrants Spain usually got were Hispanics of the same values, lenguage and culture. The reason why I think that anti-immigration sentiment is growing in Catalonia is mainly due to the fear of Catalan citizens and pro-independence people that through large influxes of immigration the Catalan identity can be diluted, an identity that is in a very critical moment due to the arrival of so many people from other parts of Spain and places in Latin America. People who generally don't bother to integrate into Catalan culture or to learn the Catalan language because they are not aware of or do not want to be aware of the difference between Catalonia and Spain in terms of culture/history/linguistics/identity. This, together with the frustration after the declaration of independence in 2017, can help to understand the irruption and sudden growth of the more far-right Catalan Alliance party. (With this, I hope to be able to provide some context on the change in the immigrant sentiment in Catalonia.)

Tons of people are anti inmigration nowadays in spain, due to both real issues and fake ones pushed by russian trolls and far right. Its undeniable that inmigration needs more controls and there are some problems with it, specially the part where if you give birth here the kid becomes spaniard, thousands of adults entering the country by posing as minors and a lot of minors arriving to airport and being left there to be taken by the spanish state. But each time there is any violence you can see how most comments are asking if the guy was non white or if he was a "non ham eater", and even when its not they try to push the fake agenda, with tons of fake news of murders rpes and similar Gangs are also on the rise and a lot of people say that that is because of inmigration, when most of said gang members are spanish for generations. Also there is something called MENA, with means minors that arrive without a guardian, they get sent usually to some centers that are almost a youth detention center, with really bad controls leading to abuses and the minors comiting crimes. All these videos "why European country xyz is against immigration now" are so pointless. The reason for it is the same everywhere: After over a decade of trying to integrate a large number of Muslim men into society, people started to realize they were being too optimistic and the cons outweight the benefits. And since this is the hot topic of the moment in all media every politician desperately tries to prove action so the voter hopefully remembers him/her next election. But unlike the immigrants, this trend will go away again at some point, when a new emergency crisis takes up the spotlight in the news and politicians will run after that instead.
If Spain wants to accept immigrants coming from a non-EU and non-Spanish speaking country, they should prioritize accepting Filipino immigrants en masse, who are way more high-skilled and assimilable than Moroccans. To make it possible, the Spanish government should pressure its Filipino counterparts to reinstate Spanish as a medium of instruction in the Philippine education system (primary, secondary, and tertiary levels).
That's a high order given the fact that since the spanish-american war the US has kept the philipines within thier area of influence and use it as theur own source of cheap yet trained labor. That being said philipines residents do already have the benefit of laxer requirements for residency and work permits due to it being a former spanish colony.

Then they can roam around the EU and apply for work in it using their new Spanish citizenship, that makes Spain look awful. Soon, Spain will not be able to cope with the numbers, regardless of specific source and background of migrants. Furthermore, handing citizenship to children of Spaniards who live abroad, regardless of the length of time the parent/s have lived in Spain is creating troubles. Now multiple generations can live e abroad and claim citizenship. Last year 75% of new citizenship was handed to people who live abroad.

All of Europe, except maybe Poland and Hungary, are open and very welcoming to migration. That is migration of skilled workers that are willing to integrate into society and become a model citizen. Then there are migrants of North Africa and the Middle East who in large numbers migrate straight into social security systems, they do not integrate and they spread crime and terror. The video failed to explain WHY people in Spain don't want any more migrants. The comments seems to agree it is because African migrants integrate poorly, this issue should have been investigated and explained properly. The video should have answered these questions: 1. What types of immigration Spain has? 2. What do Spaniards dislike about imigration? How are percieved different types of immigration? Which types people want to stop? 3. Are those percieved problems with immigration based on facts? How well do different types of migrants integrate in Spanish society? What are their crime rates and their employment rates? How are the second and third generations of immigrants doing? Without answering these questions, the video is quite useless.

In America they don't like Latin American immigration though
I have been subscribed to this chanell for some time now (I´m Spanish from Galicia) and I would like to say this video is not a good explanation on "Why" the U-Turning is happening, and actually is missleading since it leaves out major factors, namely:
1. Most of Inmigrants in Spain are coming from Central and South America and from the rest of Europe. (INE Data)

Exactly, it's like North Americans living here in Ireland, they're similar to us so they integrate seamlessly 👍

Yes that's what I assumed it was. I'd guess that most African migrants arrive illegally. So this is just about legalising them. How many will return when their visas are up remains to be seen 😉
Africans do not integrate at all though.

There are a couple reasons additionally to the migration-friendly attitude in Spain:
- The historical migration used to be from Latin American countries, which made those people relatively easier to absorb due to the historical ties due to former colonisation.

Focusing on immigration in general is obtuse. There are different kind of immigrants, whose impact in the societies they move to is widely different.
Then why don't you demand higher compensation and labor security instead of closing borders?
It was even proven by japanese economists that migration isn't even benefitial in capital sense. It's just making situation worse and thing that makes things worse is... welfare state. It's a ponzi scheme and new migrants just bring new recipiants now and in future.
I think we would need much less immigration if the jobs in sectors like agriculture were filled by Spaniards. Yet we don't want to work there on average. Wouldn't it be better for this left-wing government to try to improve wages and working conditions if the desire is to decrease immigration?

There is not much immigration from Asia and although immigration from SubSaharan Africa is increasing, it is still small compared to the first three.

Gangs are also on the rise and a lot of people say that that is because of inmigration, when most of said gang members are spanish for generations.
Also there is something called MENA, with means minors that arrive without a guardian, they get sent usually to some centers that are almost a youth detention center, with really bad controls leading to abuses and the minors comiting crimes.
This issues be it true, fake, or mixed has made that a lot of people see inmigration as a big problem, and its behind pedro sanchez turn.

Because left wing socialist love to lie to themselves to avoid doing what’s necessary, which is to process and deport those who are not authorised to stay. -- The faster residency for Latin Americans is ridiculous and it actually creating problems for the EU. They can apply for citizenship even before they can get their residency papers (2 years waiting period).

Late to this. I am an American immigrant in Catalunya. The people here think that immigrants are a problem, and after being here for a few years, they are correct. The video failed to explain WHY people in Spain don't want any more migrants. The comments seems to agree it is because African migrants integrate poorly, this issue should have been investigated and explained properly.
The video should have answered these questions:
