Not saying a 9mm would ever cut a cable but it’s easier to cut something with tension on it
But it's still the same material
@@captainh.m.murdockhowlingm5863 yeah the bullet would not go through the cable, but with the cable supporting the weight of an elevator, the cable would possibly snap after being shot. Maybe not a 9mm, but i'd bet money that anything bigger than .223 would be able to snap a strained elevator cable
@@captainh.m.murdockhowlingm5863 but with tension its more realistic and tension make the cable easier to cut
How do you cut string or rope. You tighten it. The weight of the elevator would be tightening the cable
@@captainh.m.murdockhowlingm5863 doesn't matter
Materials that are stretched out to oblivion are a lot easier to cut
Honestly surprised we didn't get an "Owww, that's hot!" when he grabbed the bullet out of the air.
i dont think it is hot while flying through the air, it heats up by deforming the metal
@@MatasVinikaitis air resistance would heat it too

Yes.
I thought the same thing. Missed some comedy gold there.
The cable need to be under tension to recreate for an accurate experiment.
Also he needs to shoot it point-blank like in the movie
I don’t really think it would make much of a difference since, the cable wouldn’t be any weaker.
@@nomnomstirn1532 ya it would def make a huge difference having 4000lbs of force pulling on it.
@@homewardboundphotos Though it has weight pulling on it, it still wouldn’t make much of a difference since the cables were built to withstand that amount of stress, plus the only thing the weight would do is tighten the cable, which would cause the cables forming that cable to be more packed together making the rope even harder to break
@@nomnomstirn1532 that's not how physics works man. It would make the cable more rigid, because of the tension. It has less ability to move and therefore less ability to absorb the energy. Just trust the 99% of us that accurately are pointing out the issue. This isnt the hill to die on.
His parents: “don’t play with guns son!”

I was thinking the same thing. Idk that it would make a huge difference but I’m sure it would help somewhat
@@alexshingle5463 i think it would because due to tension the cable would be under stress i.e physics one. Due this the cable diameter squeezes. To cut short i think it will make a difference. Can't explain physics in a comment 😂
I'm glad I wasn't the only one. The tension keeps it taught and less shock absorbing. So this test isn't an accurate scenario. Place the cable under extreme tension then shoot it.

Cable needs to be under tension, a whole different dynamic.....

This man's devotion to his intros is amazing
Matt, you rock. Having said that, im gonna repeat other comments due to how important they are to this video. The whole test is moot due to the fact that a cable under tension will behave much differently than a free swinging, energy absorbing limp cable. ok i feel better. Thx for the matrix nods and I LOVE YA BRO CYA NEXT TIME

You gotta remember that there’s a ton of weight and strain on the cable while it’s holding the elevator.
Also wouldn't be able to swing and absorb the force
Came here to say the same thing
But the metal of the cable is compressed because of the weight so maybe is harder for the bullets
Yes put this comment at top
Right I was just thinking that!! Tension makes a huge difference!
9:46 I love when he says “this one” before every bullet
I love that outro it show how much your channel grow over all these year I love your video
the cable isn't under tension, I'm sure that affects it in some way.
Was about to say this
Ofc it does. Imagine chopping a branch on the floor, if it can wiggle with the force, you need way more power, if it can't go anywhere because its flat on the ground, you get through way easier.
This bothered me as well
I figured someone beat me to it 😅 should have hooked it to a truck and a tree and pulled it so it was under tension. Then it's fighting tensile strength and fatigue as well as the force of the bullet hitting it and weakening it by breaking strands. Either way, I just like seeing Matt shoot stuff 😂
That’s what I was gonna say
when that cable is holding the weight of the elevator, under tension it is whole new story.
Not really. The strain of the elevator this rope is meant for would compress it a bit more, making it even more slightly bullet resistant
@@Helldiver5n23 but it would also be more stress, so youd stack the bullet stress from a direction it's not designed to handle on top of that, doubt a 9mil would go through but the first round to actually cut wires, the 300 winmag, would do tons more under load
I was gonna say this exact thing. Under tension if one bundle of the cable gets compromised it might cause the rest to snap due to not being able to hold the weight of the elevator anymore. So a smaller round may do the job if under enough tension
@@Helldiver5n23 The cable suspending the elevator would be under tension, not compression. As it is, that cable also has a safety factor of at least 3, more like 5 (i.e. its at least 3 to 5 times stronger than required for the given maximum loading condition).
@@Helldiver5n23 except that compression and tension are opposites. Tension puts a stress between the bonds in the atomic structures of the metal making a sudden impact more likely to break that structure.
I'd love to see you revisit this one. But have tension on the cable. Attach it to a tree and a hitch of a vehicle.
I love how you used the silly trope of entire unfired cartridges flying through the air in the intro, bad 80s cartoon style.
I'd like to see this again with the right tension on the cable
was about to say the same. It really makes a big difference
If the cable was under tension it will be dangerous cause of the cables swinging around and it may hit Matt and his cameraman
@@Trash__ yeah also true.

Its just hard to know without doing the calculation and knowing the exact numbers.
It could still work, maybe not with the 9mm but anything bigger than a 0.223 has a good chance id say.
@@iarmycombo5659 this 100% false. Aloha Airlines flight 243 had 18.5 feet of the roof of the plane. It made a successful landing after flying 13 minutes. 94 of the 95 people on the plane survived. Aren’t elevator cables always under tension?
Thus making it easier to break, maybe?
I was thinking he should've tied something really heavy to it for _some_ tension otherwise it'd just be flopping around. Granted, it's heavy enough on its own but something would've kept it from swaying and more damage could've been done with extra tension. A full-sized anvil perhaps (up to 500lbs).

Well the production value of the opening segments is getting better
It would be more accurate if the wire was holding some weight.
That is simply genius damn bro
Right, like cutting a string with a blade. Try cutting a limp string and then try it pulled tight
Also I think in the scenes he is talking about, they usually shoot where it's connecting to the elevator instead of at the cable itself. I'm probably wrong though as I know nothing.
Yep, tension causes strain on the rope
that's what i'm thinking too. if the wire is under tension, probably it will snap, but most likely it still won't since they are designed to resist load way greater than they are used for. i just searched, there are elevators that have a factor of safety of 10(and above), that means that they will use a combined strength of cables that exceeds the full weight of the cart by 10x.
The elevator cable was loose. There wasn't any weight applying tension to the cable. Maybe trying again with several hundreds of pounds of tension might yield different results.
Also, if you pay attention to that moment, he shoots the tie point, not the cable itself
Hitch two trucks together with it for the tension
Matt can't be bothered with such details like science and giving something the best chance to work🤣

Matt: doesn't understand why the scope is off
Also Matt: throws Barrett around the back of the truck like a old piece of lumber
In my opinion, if a scope can't handle being dropped or thrown around... it can't handle the sudden recoil jolt of shooting a 50 BMG. lol. I could be wrong though.
@@TheFlyingZulu the shock is different and hitting different parts, scopes are afterall designed to be mounted on rifles that shoot but not to be dropped into the back of the truck like a log
@@poortal4992 My dude, the recoil of just a SCAR17 has a very short list of scopes that can handle that short stroke .308 recoil, the barret 50 is significantly worse. The recoil of that is so much more jarring than even dropping the scope 2 feet with the rifle attached. Somebody in high school physics can write up the jerk force equasion for us. It's been too long for me lol
@@TripleSuccotash1 yeah I know the recoil force is stronger but scopes designed to handle a lot of recoil are just that, designed to handle recoil and not just general shock so dropping the scope is still likely to fuck with your zero because that’s not a type and angle of shock it’s supposed to handle
Lumber is the new gold!. A 2x4 might be worth more than the gun? I'm just being sarcastic, but wood is through the roof
A non-tensioned cable will seriously dampen the impact because it has a ton of flex. It’s like the difference of jumping out of a three story building onto a big comfy mattress vs concrete.
Not exactly right. Yes it would dampen the impact somewhat but given the speed of the bullet that won't be much.
Also this would be more like a human falling at terminal velocity in which case even water would be like concrete.
The high force being applied and the low time time period of it's application will negate the damping significantly.

"sorry but the matrix is not real" thanks matt! I needed to hear that, couldn't have been better timed xD
The cable needs to be under the weight of holding up an elevator, even though I don’t think a 9 mm would even break the cable under load. Doing a static test doesn’t really show the damage that would be done if the cable was under the weight of an elevator just saying maybe we need to donate some money so Matt can actually get an elevator
He is going to have to revisit this video with tension on the cable or he will never hear the end of it.
Something with tension would have different results , however it would be so unbelievably dangerous to test that , purposely trying to breathe a heavy duty high tension cable is how you get cut in half
Maybe he should spend a little less on the corny intro graphics?
Also, neo never shot the cable. He shot what ever piece of metal was holding the cable
I don't think it would matters with the tension since it was made to withstand that and more
My Wife: Oh cool, Matt is doing a myth-busting episode!

Agent Johnson is back for Matrix 4, yay!
There is no such thing as the matrix or Keanu Reeves mr. Spellman
Lol, yup
No, he'd say it is real!
But the weight of the elevator makes the tension of the cable higher which could lead to faster breaking.
addendum: everytime one of those smaller cables is torn apart by a bullet, the more likely that the elevator will fall.
Most of the kinetic energy is dissipated by the drag of the cable
@ elevators only need one cable to hold them under the recommended maximum weight
Yep
I was thinking the same thing also the angle of the bullet would make a difference in the film the cable was shot down the axis of the cable so the fibers wouldn’t separate as much. I don’t believe in real life a bullet would break a steel cable but it could weaken a cable that was already about to fail. But don’t forget it is the Matrix if you can bend a spoon with your mind than you could break a cable with a bullet.
I love the intro I'm a big fan of the matrixs
why does the intro have me laughing so hard!
I know we're not supposed to tell Mere but I really think the engineer of the family should review this and provide her feedback on how well the cable would hold up were the proper tension applied. 😂
I agree. The results would have been much different if the cable was under stress when shot.
even with tension applied, doubt a 9mm would cause enough damage to sever the cable.
@@keithdittmar1701 Know what that should mean? Another video! Maybe a "vet vs. engineer" elevator cable challenge.
Agreed 👍
Yea, with no weight/tension the force of the bullet is absorbed by a lot more of the cable, when it's under tension the impact is concentrated because the cable can't move and flex to absorb it. Like trying to poke a hole in a piece of paper your friend is just holding loosely with one hand versus the paper being held tight from both ends.
Matt needs to get an ultra high-speed camera so we can see these impacts in great detail.
